The Age UK London team know that age is only a number, especially when it comes to creativity and music. So they are delighted to announce the first Rock Against Ageism special event, taking place on 18 November, featuring none other than music icon Toyah Willcox.
This special occasion will offer an illuminating conversation with a pop rock legend who is close to so many of our hearts in the UK. It’s no Mystery that the Age UK London team love her! Your support will help fund the vital work of Age UK London, an independent charity within the wider Age UK network dedicated to improving the lives of older people across the capital.
The afternoon will open with an intimate fireside chat with Toyah, one of the UK’s most distinctive and enduring musical talents. The conversation will explore her remarkable career, experiences of ageing in the public eye, and the importance of challenging ageism across the music industry and wider society.
The event is intended to be the first in a series of Rock Against Ageism events, with a number of other well-known singers already on board for future occasions…very exciting indeed!
The launch of the Rock Against Ageism events comes at an important time for the campaign against ageism. Recent research undertaken by Age UK London into the experiences of older Londoners found that almost half have experienced ageism, while 60% are reluctant to challenge it. Older Londoners reported experiencing ageism in everyday situations, including on public transport, in shops and when accessing healthcare services such as GP surgeries and hospitals.
Rock Against Ageism aims not only to raise funds, but also to use music’s power and influence to challenge negative stereotypes about ageing and promote a more positive, inclusive view of later life.
Liz Drury, CEO of Age UK London, said:
“We are over the moon that Toyah has agreed to support us by speaking at this special event. She is the epitome of creativity and joy, and a shining example of a positive attitude at any age.”
“For 42 years, Toyah has taken to the stage like no other. She has received numerous awards and nominations for her work in singing, writing and acting, and her tours continue to sell out across the country.”
“Thank you for joining us, Toyah!”
The November event will offer supporters the chance to enjoy a unique afternoon with a true music icon while helping Age UK London continue its work to improve the lives of older people across the capital.
Tickets are priced at £30 and can be booked here.
