Paranormal Activity places the haunted house at the centre of an act of self-surveillance. When Katie reveals to her boyfriend Micah that she has been haunted by an evil presence since childhood, Micah employs an array of digital devices to try and record any strange events that might happen around their home. But when doors start slamming on their own, a Ouija board spontaneously combusts and Katie appears to become possessed (caught in chilling time lapse), the couple may have got more than they bargained for. The capturing of these events gives the film a documentary feel, but one wonders if the ghost is not just on screen but also in the machine. Oren Peli’s low budget chiller conducts a séance for the YouTube generation, a conjuring of spirits in high definition, offering proof that our collective fear of the unknown, despite our technological progress, is even more potent than ever.

Directed by visual artist and filmmaker PiroPito, this atmospheric short film claims to be “not a horror video” but instead a simple visual tour of their own home. But what quickly emerges is an increasingly disturbing parade of grotesque images presented as a single, unbroken take. As the camera tracks through an impossibly unending hallway, this repetition of phantasmagorias builds to a haunting and ultimately tragic conclusion. A chilling example of “creepypasta” (scary stories presented online as real-life happenings), My House Walk-Through is an astonishing work of low-budget digital horror and a perfect companion piece to Paranormal Activity.
