Victim + Q&A with screenwriter Jakub Medvecky

Irina, a single mother from Ukraine, lives with her son Igor in a Czech border town. When she discovers that Igor has been assaulted by three ‘Roma people’ her whole world comes crashing down. But as time goes on, Irina spots inconsistencies in his story, forcing her to choose between compromising her conscience to protect her son and revealing the truth at the risk of their immigration status – a choice that triggers a tremor in the faultlines of a divided society.

Jakub Medvecký currently teaches Film Screenwriting at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava (VSMU). His screenwriting credits include Victim (2022) which premiered at the Venice Film Festival and grabbed wide international attention. By a Sharp Knife (2019) was his feature debut as a screenwriter. The film had 8 nominations (including for the best script) for Sun in a Net Awards which is the highest award of achievement in film awarded in Slovakia. Jakub has worked as a script consultant for various documentary films such as Yours Sincerely, Social System (2020) which has already been introduced at various programs such as Ex Oriente and IDFAcademy Summer School or On Your Marks! (2021) that premiered at Doc Lisboa. Currently, he has another feature film script Cowgirl (dir. Michal Blaško) in pre-production.
