Sven Helbig Announces ‘REQUIEM A’ UK Premiere in London

On October 4, 2025, Central Hall Westminster in London – the historic site of the first United Nations meeting – will host the UK premiere of German composer Sven Helbig’s REQUIEM A. The work, a meditation on grief, memory, and renewal, will feature the London Contemporary Orchestra, four European choirs (Dresdner Kreuzchor, Trinity Boys Choir, Poznań Boys’ Choir, and La Maîtrise de Garçons de Colmar) under Kreuzkantor Martin Lehmann, and renowned bass René Pape, with live visuals by Icelandic artist Máni M. Sigfusson. Helbig describes the piece as “a destroyed and partially rebuilt city,” blending classical and contemporary elements to create a shared, almost liturgical space for performers and audience alike. Following premieres in Dresden and Vienna earlier in 2025, REQUIEM A continues Helbig’s exploration of the intersection between classical tradition and modern sound, offering reflections on resilience and new beginnings inspired in part by his daughter. With nine sections moving from collective memory to personal reflection, the work unites international artists in a powerful statement on peace and community. Tickets for the London premiere are available now, offering audiences a rare chance to experience one of Europe’s most innovative contemporary composers at the height of his creative powers. The album, REQUIEM A, was released on Deutsche Grammophon on May 8, 2025, and continues to resonate through live performances as a testament to memory, mourning, and the enduring quest for peace.
