Beyond 1932 Residency:  Rust رَست

Rust will perform their unreleased album ‘Masar’, a musical interpretation of poetry by the talented Lebanese poet Jana Salloum. Jana’s poetry explores the path of the Arab woman, delves into her world, raises existential questions, and addresses the battle for identity. Rust interpreted the poem with rich melodies, intriguing rhythms, and a harmonious blend of electronic and traditional elements. The album invites the listener to experience the diverse, powerful emotions it evokes and the meaning behind the advocacy it leads. Petra’s vocals captivate the senses, and the warm tones of Hany’s Oud add depth and authenticity to each track. The second part of the performance, “Electric Wasla”, is 30 30-minute set customized for this event. This segment is based on the traditional Arabic musical form ‘Wasla’, consisting of several related classical compositions and improvisations based on the same Maqam.

Rim Irscheid organises this event and is part of six residencies with the ERC/UKRI-funded project Beyond 1932: Rethinking Musical Modernity in the Middle East and North Africa (1932 MUSCON). The EPSRC funds the project via the UKRI/EC HE Guarantee ERC scheme (funder Award Reference: EP/X022749/1) and is based at the Music Department of King’s College London.
