Eastend Chinatown Celebration of Contemporary Chinese Culture in London

September 17 @ 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Free

We’re hosting the second annual celebration of Eastend Chinatown on Thursday 17 September at Virgin Hotels in Shoreditch, and would love you to join us for an evening of talks by Chinese creatives, a Chinese rap performance and DJ sets from Canton Disco. Doors open at 6pm for the talks, with socialising and music from 8pm.

Eastend Chinatown is a new Chinatown emerging organically in East London, shaped by a new generation of Chinese and ESEA creatives, entrepreneurs, artists and businesses.

The event takes place during ESEA Heritage Month and celebrates what Chinatown could look like for the next generation: younger, creative and tech-enabled.

The agenda for the night:

🎤 6pm | Industry talks

  • The Eastend Chinatown story, moderated by BBC reporter Elaine Chong.
  • Art critic Vivienne Chow will give her thoughts on contemporary ESEA art.
  • A “China Outside China” discussion on why Chinese creativity and culture resonates with a new generation of Londoners and Chinese diaspora.

🎨 Creative competition launch
An open call for creatives to enter a short-video project that aims to celebrate new Chinese identity, under the title of “Show us your Chinatown in 2046”.

🤝 8pm | Community networking
Bringing together East London’s ESEA creative and cultural communities, plus a live performance from East London Chinese rapper XiXi.

🪩 9pm | Canton Disco Afterparty
“One Night in Canton”, hosted by Cosmo Webber, also at Virgin Hotels.
