Supporting LGBTQIA+ refugees at Pride and Beyond
June 14, 2023 @ 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
Event Navigation

LGBTQIA+ people and their rights are not safe around the world. Sixty-seven countries still criminalise same-sex partnerships and LGBTQIA+ people. Eleven countries can or do impose the death penalty for same-sex intimacy.*
LGBTQIA+ refugees and asylum seekers are one of the most vulnerable refugee communities. They face higher risks of homo- and trans-phobic violence from both their host country and other displaced people, isolation from traditional support networks and challenges in receiving suitable housing, healthcare and other support services.
Within the UK, the hostile environment and xenophobic attitudes exacerbate the issues queer refugees and asylum seekers face – with reports of individuals having to “prove” their sexuality within a hostile legal system and facing violence and abuse within immigration detention. And this is without considering the recent impacts of the new Nationality and Borders Bill passed in 2022.
We believe everyone has the right to safety and to love freely. That’s why this Pride Month and Refugee Week, TEDxLondon and The Conduit are coming together to shine a light on the challenges queer refugees face, why we must support LGBTQIA+ refugees and asylum seekers better and how we can do this.
With our expert speakers, you’ll learn more about this pressing issue and how you can take part in supporting queer refugees everywhere.
Speakers:
- Nancy Kelley, CEO of Stonewall
- Moud Goba, Manager at Micro Rainbow and Chair of Trustees at Black Pride UK
Chair:
- Reeta Loi, they are a poet, singer and music artist and also the CEO of Gaysians.
