Young People: Mixed Media Design with Nicole Line

This three day course for young people (11-18 years old) focussing on surface design, will explore skills and techniques, including experimental drawing, fashion illustration, mark-making, printing onto textiles and garments, and developing mood-boards and sketchbooks for your current projects and portfolio.
Useful information
- The course takes place on Monday 29, Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 July, 10:30am – 3:30pm at Leighton House.
- Bring a packed lunch.
- All materials provided, but bring scrap fabrics and old garments to upcycle and transform through print.
Mix techniques and combine unusual qualities together, creating a collection of small samples to take forward into future projects.
Who should take this course
- 11-18 years old.
- Curious minds with an interest in art, fashion, textiles and design, or those who fancy doing something a bit different.
- Suitable for anyone studying art, and those considering college application or a Foundation course.
Topics Covered
- How to use visual research as a source of inspiration for your designs.
- Experimental Drawing, inspired by the museum and garden.
- Drawing development for textiles.
- Designing and cutting paper stencils.
- Screen printing onto fabric / own garments with exposed screens and with your designs.
- Fashion illustration.
- Developing sketchbooks and concept mood-boards.
- How to present your work in a portfolio.
The course includes a private tour of Leighton House and a garment handling session with the museum’s curators.
Course Outcomes
- Compile a collection of work for future projects.
- Understand and combine printing processes, and use of colour and pattern.
- Collaborate and work independently, take part in multidisciplinary discussions and share techniques, skills, experiences and materials.
- Learn the good practice of how to document your creative journey through photography and film.
- Last but not least… have fun experimenting!
