SUMMARY:John Vanbrugh: The Drama of Architecture
DESCRIPTION:To coincide with the publication of his book\, John Vanbrugh: The Drama of Architecture\, Charles Saumarez Smith will give a lunchtime talk on Vanbrugh’s extraordinary life: his upbringing; why he spent so much time in a French gaol; the writing of The Relapse and The Provoked Wife; and how he came to design Castle Howard with no previous experience of architecture. Saumarez Smith will give particular attention to Vanbrugh’s work as a theatrical impresario and the designer of the Queen’s Theatre\, Haymarket\, so disastrous as a venue for plays\, but where all of Handel’s early operas were performed. He will then describe Vanbrugh’s quarrel with the Duchess of Marlborough and his later work as an architect\, at King’s Weston\, Claremont\, Grimsthorpe\, Seaton Delaval and Stowe. In recent years\, Vanbrugh’s reputation as an architect has been eclipsed by his subordinate\, Nicholas Hawksmoor. This talk and the accompanying book will explain Vanbrugh’s originality and influence on later architects from Robert Adam to Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown. \nCharles Saumarez Smith is a writer\, curator and art historian. He has served as Director of the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery\, London\, as Secretary and Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Arts\, London\, as Professor of Architectural History at the Royal Academy of Arts\, and Chairman of The Royal Drawing School and The Watercolour World. He is currently a Trustee of the Garden Museum\, and Emeritus Trustee of ArtUK and Charleston. \nCopies of the book will be available for purchase in the Foyer at a special price. \nFurther details of the book available here

SUMMARY:Imagine Series
DESCRIPTION:Rihab Azar is a London-based\, Syrian/British oud player. Performing internationally since 2008\, in 2014 she became the first woman oudist to perform accompanied by the Syrian National Orchestra for Arabic Music and in 2016 Arts Council England recognised her as a musician of ‘Exceptional Promise’. \nJoin Rihab for a low-stimulus performance as part of Wigmore Hall’s Imagine Series. Rihab will perform music without sudden or loud volume in this informal concert. She’ll introduce each piece and share some stories and facts about the music along the way. \nThe concert will benefit from natural daylight through Wigmore Hall’s frosted glass ceiling\, and all other lighting in the auditorium itself will be kept low. Announcements will be kept to a minimum\, and there will be a quiet space in the Learning Room. Audiences may leave and re-enter when needed. Hand dryers in the toilets will be switched off\, and paper towels will be available instead. \nLow stimulus performances may benefit some neurodivergent people and all those who prefer a quieter environment. For more information\, visit wigmore-hall.org.uk/imagine-series. \nBook Rihab for your Next Corporate or Private Event

SUMMARY:Fretwork; Elin Manahan Thomas soprano
DESCRIPTION:Since its foundation in 1985 the viol consort has helped disseminate and renew a tradition of music formerly little known beyond a small band of specialists\, its extraordinary standard of playing wedded to an approach to repertory that has seen it seek out forgotten music as well as commissioning new works from contemporary composers. In Musick’s Monument\, the ensemble surveys English consort music from Cornysh to Purcell across three seasons. \nIn this programme\, the English consort repertoire is sampled in a varied selection of items that looks forward to Christmas and the New Year. \n[fusion_button link=”https://musicforlondon.ticketswitch.com/book/XAHC-fretwork-elin-manahan-thomas-soprano/#perf=XAHC-2&date=2019-12-15&time=7.30PM” text_transform=”” title=”” target=”_self” link_attributes=”” alignment=”” modal=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility\,medium-visibility\,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” s2id_autogen16=”” s2id_autogen16_search=”” color=”default” button_gradient_top_color=”” button_gradient_bottom_color=”” button_gradient_top_color_hover=”” button_gradient_bottom_color_hover=”” accent_color=”” accent_hover_color=”” type=”” bevel_color=”” border_width=”” border_radius=”” border_color=”” border_hover_color=”” size=”” stretch=”default” icon=”” icon_position=”left” icon_divider=”no” s2id_autogen17=”” s2id_autogen17_search=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ s2id_autogen18=”” s2id_autogen18_search=”” animation_offset=””]Tickets Here[/fusion_button]
