SUMMARY:DEAR NORA + TAI HAF HEB DRIGOLYN
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nDEAR NORA (DUO)\nTAI HAF HEB DRIGOLYN\nWednesday 22 April\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7.30pm | £12 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/F39394c4d08b \nDEAR NORA is an ever-evolving indie-pop band fronted by songwriter/producer Katy Davidson\, and features a rotating cast of collaborators. Davidson was born in Arizona and has also lived in Oregon and California. The energy\, intensity\, and vastness of the western United States landscape imbue the songwriting and recordings. \nDear Nora has existed in two distinct eras – 1999-2008 and 2017-present – with a roughly decade-long break in the middle (the “Lost Years”)\, during which Davidson fronted various side projects and played session guitar/keyboards in the bands YACHT and Gossip. Dear Nora’s early music leans more toward pop-punk\, DIY\, confessional\, and youthful. The contemporary music leans more poetic\, expansive\, genre-bending\, and wise. The through-lines between Dear Nora’s two eras are: melodic hooks\, vocal harmonies\, and lyrics about time\, space\, capitalism\, the internet\, daily life vérité\, ancient things\, real vs. unreal or surreal\, and all kinds of relationships. \nPartially because Dear Nora’s early years happened before the rise of smartphones and social media (prior to hyper digital documentation)\, and because very little content survives this era aside from the analogue recordings\, the group is often described as “legendary” (as in\, “legend/myth”). Rediscovered via streaming platforms and word of mouth\, Dear Nora’s music has influenced many young songwriters. \nhttps://dearnora.bandcamp.com/ \nTAI HAF HEB DRIGOLYN are a band from Wales. Built atop of a DIY Ethos\, THHD have a fantastic ability to merge their musical brain with real life surroundings\, perfectly represented by “Ein Albwm Cyntaf Ni” recorded straight onto tape directly sampling the sounds that they recorded over. It’s rare for music this genuine and human to arrive with this quality and quantity; this is a special act that has to be seen to be believed. THHD are obsessed with the Elephant 6 collective\, and as such have members spread across the country; they also stumble in the footsteps of R. Pollard and D. R. Edwards. \nhttps://taihafhebdrigolyn.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:YELLOW SWANS + UNMARRY ME + RAIME (DJs)
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nYELLOW SWANS\nUNMARRY ME\nRAIME (DJs)\nMonday 16 February\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7.30pm | £18 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/r1ab97cac2bd \nYELLOW SWANS have carved an influential path through America’s experimental music underground\, at the axis of noise\, psychedelia\, industrial\, drone\, and hardcore. From their 2001 founding to the duo’s final shows (and subsequent hiatus) in 2008\, Gabriel Mindel Saloman and Pete Swanson released well over 50 recordings documenting studio experiments\, live improvisations\, and numerous collaborations. Together they relentlessly toured North America\, Europe\, and Oceania\, performing at numerous international music festivals including Sonar (ES)\, Open Circuit (BE)\, and Sonic Protest (FR)\, and were invited to join Art Council England’s Free Noise Tour in 2007. Yellow Swans performed for Upset The Rhythm multiple times during these busy years. Now\, after a 15 year break\, they have returned to recording and performing. Their music continues to be restless\, ragged\, and forever in flux\, untethered and unresolved. Check out the duo’s two new casette albums on Bandcamp now\, ‘Out of Practice I & II’\, the second is particularly striking and alien\, enjoy! \nhttps://yellowswans.bandcamp.com/ \nUNMARRY ME is a triangular shaped group\, comprising of Lise Frances\, Jon Slade and Chris Rowley. London to Brighton and back again. Unmarry Me are a group that have been together for about 6 months in a world at war and in trouble. Unmarry Me are therefore a group trying to carve out some joy and light as form of resistance\, no small feat\, and maybe grandiose but worth the stating. Unmarry Me Is comprised of personnel who have all had time or continue to have time in other groups who did not take easy routes or money and didn’t make many friends\, so it goes. These groups respectively or chronologically were and are Huggy Bear\, Comet Gain\, I’m Being Good\, Help She Can’t Swim\, Snoozers and Adulkt Life. Bands that time will record as being on the right sides of history and her story. Unmarry Me are of a completely different stripe or ilk but comprise the antagonist and peculiar DNA that honour this. Unmarry Me play and record and create and make do in a DIY syncretism that’s useful to themselves\, distinct and not worth talking about. Unmarry Me! are about bending\, queering\, breaking and resetting rules\, smudging boundaries and in the main having a lot of excellent fun!! \nhttps://happy-soul-records.bandcamp.com/album/clean-fight-b-w-spanner-in-the-hurt \nRAIME (DJs)\nhttps://raime.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:LANDE HEKT
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nLANDE HEKT\nWednesday 15 October\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7.30pm | £12.50 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/fbcab145bcce \nLANDE HEKT’s music is born out of self-reflection\, social and political awareness\, and her capacity for evocative storytelling. Having explored this personal song-writing approach with her former band\, Muncie Girls\, with their punchy yet tender punk-flecked songs\, Lande released her debut solo record Going To Hell in 2021 via queer and trans run independent label Get Better Records. Going To Hell presents its raw honesty amongst understatedly luminous melodies and candid\, unpretentious lyrics which contemplate\, among other things\, her experience coming out as gay. Lande’s music sits beautifully alongside such essential artists as The Wedding Present\, The Sundays\, The Replacements\, Sleeper and Sharon Van Etten. \nWith her debut album barely a year old\, 2022 saw Lande armed with a whole new collection of song-form vignettes and musings on her life and experiences with her second album\, House Without a View (partnering again with Get Better Records and Prize Sunflower Records in the UK). Kicking off where the last record left off\, House Without a View continues to explore ideas of queer identity\, as well as her changing relationship with gender\, dealing with childhood trauma\, and confronting the isolation and period of adjustment brought by the pandemic. Lead single ‘Gay Space Cadets’ daydreams about a life of excitement and adventure instead of being “forced to buy into capitalism and become a pathetic\, losing player in a game that you hate.” Although there’s darkness and sadness within the record\, there’s also some shining beacons of positivity and a lighthearted side\, albeit with a side of frustration. \nLande has toured in the UK\, Europe\, Canada and Australia supporting the likes of Alvvays\, Laura Jane Grace\, The Beths\, Throwing Muses and the legend that is Tricky. She has also played at Glastonbury festival\, as well as events for The Big Issue and Corbyn’s Labour Party. \nhttps://landehekt.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:MICHAEL BEACH + EXPIRY + CAROLINE NO
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nMICHAEL BEACH\nEXPIRY\nCAROLINE NO\nFriday 1 August\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7pm – 10.30pm | £9 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/uc37b4f150b4 \nMICHAEL BEACH is a Melbourne-based and Californian-born musician. On his fifth LP\, Big Black Plume\, Beach reveals the vitalizing power of connection in an often hostile world. Equally informed by the songwriting of Bill Fay and Peter Laughner\, the minimalism of Tony Conrad and Terry Riley\, and the rock and roll heart of the Goner Records roster\, Big Black Plume provides deliberate compositions adorned with genuine madness. The songs on this album range from spare\, textural ballads\, to spiraling psychedelic overtures connected to a propulsive cosmic pulse. \nThe songs here aren’t stick-and-poke songs that will dry and fade on the skin\, aimless prayers for jams; Beach has been making deliberate things for decades. Big Black Plume is a record about connections\, mercurially curated\, transforming individual contributions into something strikingly communal. For years\, Beach has been carefully fostering musical connections – for Big Black Plume is out July 25th\, 2025\, on vital independent labels Poison City (Australia) and Goner Records (US / Rest of World). Beach will support Big Black Plume with headlining tour dates and festival appearances in Australia\, the United States\, and Europe\, including Gonerfest in Memphis\, TN\, Rising in Melbourne\, Dark Mofo in Tasmania\, and Binic Folks Blues Fest in France. \nhttps://michaelbeach.org/ \nEXPIRY are a 5 piece band based in London. Centred around the songwriting of Australian expat Louis Forster (formerly of The Goon Sax) the band began as a two piece with Sonny Barrett (Adulkt Life) in 2022. From early shows that featured primitive drum beats played off phones the band has evolved slowly into a roaring five piece complete with duelling guitars\, piano and brothers. \nhttps://www.instagram.com/expiry__/ \nCAROLINE NO is a psychedelic-folk project based in London and built around the songwriting of Caroline Kennedy. Recordings of the group have been described as commanding in their nonchalance\, allowing the listener to feel like they are living within the open boundaries of the song. A “unique\, beguiling sound sits somewhere between archetypal Dunedin pop and languorous\, textural improvisation” (Students of Decay) and “no-fi\, anti-folk ditties that channel an anarchic spirit” (Chris Cobcroft 4ZZZ). Caroline No have released three albums No Language (World News / Students of Decay)\, Swimmers (King Crab) and Caroline No (Grapefruit Record Club). \nhttps://carolinenohello.bandcamp.com/album/no-language \n

SUMMARY:NAP EYES + ELIZA NIEMI
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nNAP EYES\nELIZA NIEMI\nWednesday 7 May\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7.30pm | £13 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/p590cef01f9d \nNAP EYES still bring to mind the bucolic ennui of the Silver Jews and Daniel Johnston’s jittery naïveté\, but the sheen and maturity they boast lend a wide-angle appeal. Nap Eyes’ metamorphic fifth long-player collects a cache of nine fascinating songs recorded over the four years since their last album. ‘The Neon Gate’ reveals classic touchstones (the uneasy interplay of physics and philosophy\, perambulatory meditations\, self-interrogating soliloquies\, apertures of surreality\, and video games) but also evidence of divergent impulses toward nonlinear abstraction and long-form improvisational composition (resulting in their most discursive\, deconstructed\, and deliquescent songs to date) and narrative and lyric formality\, imparting the sense that Nap Eyes have transmuted\, as has their understanding of what a song is\, what it can do\, where it might go.\nhttps://napeyes.bandcamp.com/ \n  \nELIZA NIEMI is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter currently based in Toronto. On her new album Progress Bakery (out now on Tin Angel)\, Eliza knows to leave some questions alone—to let juxtaposition and tension be the proof. She playfully slip-slides through words\, sounds\, and images\, delighting in surprise\, skimming ideas like stones cast across clear water\, touching down briefly with uncommon grace. \nhttps://elizaniemi.bandcamp.com/album/progress-bakery

SUMMARY:WENDY EISENBERG & RYAN SAWYER + KIRAN LEONARD
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nWENDY EISENBERG & RYAN SAWYER\nKIRAN LEONARD\nWednesday 9 April\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7.30pm | £12 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/G8802b91cafe \nWENDY EISENBERG & RYAN SAWYER came together seemingly by fate. The duo originally came together in a dream Eisenberg had\, and not long after\, were brought together in reality as substitutes for a show at Union Pool\, where they instantly fell in step. Both artists’ work traverses genres from jazz to noise\, all sorts of avant substrata and delicate songs\, each placing a special emphasis on vast dynamics\, textures\, and moods. Their performances ebb and flow between long\, improvisational pieces and composed songs from each of the artists’ repertoires\, setting the sonic intersection between Blaze Foley and the New York Art Quartet. The duo has previously opened for caroline at National Sawdust. \nRyan also plays on Wendy’s new single ‘I Don’t Miss You’ (Joyful Noise Recordings). Wendy has previously played for us solo\, and as a member of Editrix and Bill Orcutts’s guitar quartet\, and their recent album ‘Viewfinder’ was described by The Guardian as “unexpected shifts in pace mix with Americana and jazz\, with the singer-songwriter’s distinctive guitar sound driving a song cycle like no other”. Ryan Sawyer has played drums / percussion for Tv On The Radio\, Marshall Allen\, Susan Alcorn\, Gang Gang Dance\, At The Drive-In and collaborates frequently with John Dwyer. \nhttps://www.wendyeisenberg.com/\nhttps://ryansawyer.bandcamp.com/music \n  \nKIRAN LEONARD’s unique and ambitious body of work spans more than a decade of releases on labels such as Moshi Moshi and Hand of Glory\, limited-run noisy DIY fare\, and everything in between. The adolescent guitar/chamber prog of early records such as ‘Bowler Hat Soup’ (2013) and ‘Grapefruit’ (2016) earned praise from Pitchfork\, the Guardian and the Quietus\, and produced several BBC 6Music-playlisted singles. More recent work has seen Kiran attempt to synthesise interests in situated/home recording\, collage\, his live practice\, and a combination of songcraft with graphic scores\, as documented on the monumental (i.e. two-hour-long) and abstract ‘Trespass on Foot’ (2021) and ‘River Holds Peace\, Some Live’ (2023)\, a collection of new and old material arranged for an ensemble of multiple electric guitars\, cittern and double bass. Last year\, After half a decade of songs without choruses\, Kiran released ‘Real Home’ on Memorials of Distinction\, which was named by the Guardian that summer among the best albums of 2024 so far. \nhttps://kleonard.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:NIGHTSHIFT + MARY CURRIE & ROBERT SOTELO + ANNELIES MONSERÉ
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nNIGHTSHIFT\nMARY CURRIE & ROBERT SOTELO\nANNELIES MONSERÉ\nSunday 8 December\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7.30pm | £10 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/pcd6fe8e5f9b \nNIGHTSHIFT are a Glasgow music collective whose new album ‘Homosapien’ just came out on Chicago’s Trouble In Mind Records. Notably\, the band has lost some members\, gained a new member & shuffled some roles; former drummer Chris White (Spinning Coin) is now on guitar. His distinctive playing delivers a countrified energy that is central to the album\, leading the song structures into more succinct and colorful places\, matching the upbeat and playful nature the band has always drawn strength from\, only more so now under his stylish approach. Primary vocalist & keyboardist Eothen Stearn’s lyrical gifts illuminate the group’s output with an optimistic urgency that is unmatched. On ‘Homosapien’ she wears her heart on her sleeve\, but even in the song’s darkest moments\, the words create a sense of hope and potential.\nhttps://nightshiftgroup.bandcamp.com \nMARY CURRIE & ROBERT SOTELO have a forthcoming 7” EP coming out on Upset The Rhythm this October entitled ‘Dream Songs’. Introduced via a mutual friend\, Robert Sotelo approached Mary Currie (Flaming Tunes/Officer!) about collaborating on four songs he was constructing with Glasgow based producer/sound guru Joe Howe. Performing live with a set-up that will reconfigure these four compositions into a minimalist bass\, drum machine and keys dynamic the duo (and band) will also look at recreating some cuts from the Flaming Tunes era also\, focusing quite heavily on a anything could happen approach.\nhttps://robertsotelo.bandcamp.com/ \nANNELIES MONSERÉ has been playing music solo since 2000. Initially the music was piano-based and mostly instrumental. Once she ‘discovered’ her voice\, vocals became a main focus. The early songs had very simple structures and melodies\, and the words were sparse and introvert. Her debut album ‘Helder’ (released by BlueSanct) was described as “a delicate album\, complete with beautiful cracks and loads of tape-hiss.” Recorded at home in Gent between 2016 and 2023\, Annelies new album ‘I Sigh\, I Resign’ (Horn of Plenty) retains the intimacy of previous LP ‘Mares’ with it’s close-mic’d keyboards and vocals that capture every breath. Folk and early music are at the core of her sound but the palette of piano\, organ\, bass guitar\, cello\, synth and drum machine make it very much a document of the here and now.\nhttps://anneliesmonsere.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:SCREAM + SOULSIDE
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nSCREAM\nSOULSIDE\nFriday 10 May\nSaturday 11 May\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7pm | £20.00 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/xc9953269e0e & https://link.dice.fm/Qfab66a55a93 \nSCREAM formed in 1979. Drummer Kent Stacks\, bassist Skeeter Enoch Thompson and the brothers Pete and Franz Stahl attended school together in Bailey’s Crossroads\, Virginia\, when they began to discover the punk and new wave scene in DC and the provocative power of making music. Like most of the punk bands in DC\, they were influenced by the Bad Brains\, but their rock and roll sensibilities set them apart. In 1982\, they went into Inner Ear Studio with Ian MacKaye and Eddie Janney to record Dischord’s first full length album\, Still Screaming. \nScream followed this with a second full length album\, This Side Up\, in 1984. The band toured throughout the US and were one of the first US hardcore bands to tour Europe and the UK. In 1987\, they released Banging the Drum\, which was recorded at both Southern Studios in London and Inner Ear. In 1988\, No More Censorship was released on reggae label RAS records. Scream returned to Dischord to release Fumble in 1993. \nScream’s newest album\, DC Special\, was released late last year on Dischord Records. For this record\, Scream invited their extensive music community to help create a unique project that weaves the history of music in Washington DC into the story of the band. DC Special embodies the same sense of community and politics that inspired Scream from the start and is a truly special collection of new music that speaks to the present and also tells the story of DC music\, Scream\, and the influences that shaped them. \nhttps://dischord.com/release/194/dc-special \nSOULSIDE formed in Washington\, D.C. in 1985\, split up in 1989\, then reformed in 2014 and has continued playing and writing music since then. After releasing their debut album on Sammich/Dischord\, they recorded Trigger (Dischord\, 1988) and Hot Bodi-Gram (Dischord\, 1989)\, which were combined on the Soon Come Happy CD in 1990. The band toured extensively in the US and Europe during these years\, including groundbreaking shows in Poland and East Berlin shortly before the Berlin Wall fell in 1989. \nIn 2020\, Soulside put out a new 7-inch\, This Ship\, their first release in 30 years\, which was recorded in Prague. In late 2022\, Dischord released a 12-song Soulside album\, A Brief Moment in the Sun\, which was written during the heart of the pandemic and recorded in person by J. Robbins in November 2021. Soulside toured the US and Europe in 2023 to support the new album. Soulside is: Alexis Fleisig (drums)\, Scott McCloud (guitar and vocals)\, Bobby Sullivan (vocals)\, and Johnny Temple (bass). \nhttps://soulside.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:THE HOMESICK + FINDOM + HOME SECRETARY
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nTHE HOMESICK\nFINDOM\nHOME SECRETARY\nThursday 22 February\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7.30pm | £10.00 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/bf946caa252b \nTHE HOMESICK are Elias Elgersma (Vocals\, Effects)\, Jaap van der Velde (Vocals\, Effects) and Erik Woudwijk (Drums). The Homesick fuse post-punk rhythms with melodic whimsical pop into an experimental blend of great songs. The Dutch group have been around since their first EP Television from 2013 and released their debut album Youth Hunt (Subroutine) in 2017. Hailing from the backwater Frisian municipality of Dokkum\, the band enjoy exploring the extremes of their music. Their albums play with this ambiguity as they incorporate dark post-punk alongside sure-fire pop earworms. Their second album The Big Exercise (SubPop) from 2020 inverted this sound\, second-guessing their core chemistry as a live unit. Where the debut album incorporates vocals drenched in reverb\, warped synths and distorted guitars\, the Big Excercise leaves a hint of romanticism through the baroque elements such as piano\, acoustic guitar\, percussion and clarinet.\nShortly after the release of The Big Exercise they individually started to explore new musical directions. Guitar and bass were dropped as Elias and Jaap searched for other sounds playing keys\, sample boxes and more new rhythmic instruments. “We wanted to come up with something that we can dance to”\, Jaap says. “After these last two years we very much felt like this is what we need now.” The new songs are unmistakably The Homesick and at the same time like you’ve never heard them before. The third and self-titled album by The Homesick will be released now.\nhttps://thehomesick.bandcamp.com \nFINDOM know a thing about Britain’s death drive. They know that morbid fascinations of bad faith\, morose binds and slow crawls have led us here. Their debut tape (on Gob Nation) confronts the conceit of class deterioration\, clashing together energies of No Wave\, Jazz\, Dub and Goth into a work that\, through part satire and part protest\, has the hooks to fight back. We are left with five tracks self-described as anti-jazz with an overarching structure that feels like a Killing Joke inspired noir thriller\, where moments of dark aggression are sonically punctuated by open stretches of rhythmic disorientation.\nhttps://gobnation.bandcamp.com/album/pay-pig \nHOME SECRETARY are a duo from South London\, creating rickety and occasionally rhythmic non-songs that combine spoken word with improvised instrumentation. Expect to hear crude sound collage\, fumbled instruments\, and vocals whispered and proclaimed.\nhttps://homesec.bandcamp.com

DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents…LANDE HEKTSUPERMILKCHARLEY STONEMonday 23 OctoberThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB7.30pm | £9 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/s8612f0fbfaf \n\n\n\nLANDE HEKT crafted politically aware\, heart-on-sleeve\, punchy yet tender\, punk-flecked songs with her band Muncie Girls\, more recently she turned her hand to an even more personal songwriting approach by writing a solo record – 2021’s Going To Hell. The debut full-length was released via queer and trans run independent label Get Better Records and documented her experience coming out as gay. It set out her stall as a solo artist with supreme storytelling abilities and a knack for understatedly luminous melodies. Lande’s music sits beautifully alongside such artists as The Wedding Present\, The Replacements and Sharon Van Etten. \n\n\n\nLande met 2022 armed with a whole new collection of song-form vignettes and musings on her life for her second album House Without a View. This record continued to explore ideas of queer identity\, as well as her changing relationship with gender\, dealing with childhood trauma\, and confronting the isolation and period of adjustment brought by the pandemic. This year Lande Hekt continues her poignant musical introspection with two new singles ‘Pottery Class’ and ‘Axis’. Bittersweet ‘Pottery Class’ captures the feeling of yearning for someone and longing for a space to share with that person. In the song\, Lande reflects: “we could move to the city\, go to shows and join a pottery class / But you’d always be overwhelmed by everything that moves too fast / I don’t care where we live\, I just want you back.” \n\n\n\nhttps://landehekt.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nSUPERMILK is a band from North London comprising members of Doe\, Cheerbleederz\, Nervus and Onsind. SUMMARY:CURRENT AFFAIRS + THE PLAN + GROSS MISCONDUCT
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nCURRENT AFFAIRSTHE PLANGROSS MISCONDUCTWednesday 26 JulyThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB7.30pm | £8.00 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/O2543ad5f210 \n\n\n\nCURRENT AFFAIRS are a band from Glasgow marrying 80s pop sensibilities with ferocious post-punk\, neatly navigating the line between new wave and goth. Though Joan Sweeney (ex-Rose McDowall’s Band\, Aggi Doom\, The Royal We) is a lifer\, Sebastian Ymai (Comidillo Tapes\, Pissy\, Anxiety) came from Chile via York\, recently relocating to Berlin in 2021\, and new member Gemma Fleet (The Wharves\, Order of the Toad\, Dancer) alongside Andrew Milk (Shopping\, Pink Pound) were persuaded to leave London for the ‘second city’ after touring through with previous bands. However\, Glasgow is the heart and hub of the band’s music\, and musical life and the place where the forthcoming album Off the Tongue (Tough Love) was solidified and produced.Written from within the world of crumbling services\, broken bonds and wounded spirits\, Off the Tongue rolls off an ecstatic rage\, filled with hope for you\, them and everyone else. It’s a rallying cry away from hopelessness\, forgiving your fears and laying them to waste. Their album holds a place for you to be angry and to be focused. In lieu of having anything else\, we’ve always got each other\, and an uncertain future is an open game for us too.https://currentaffairs.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nTHE PLAN is a continually evolving outfit which includes members who have previously appeared in bands like Wetdog\, Vic Godard and The Subway Sect\, Hot Silk Pockets\, Mathew Sawyer and The Ghosts\, Reverend Pike\, and Private Trousers. Sometimes described as post-punk\, they also pull from more diverse influences such as no wave\, garage\, and psych\, as well as hints of prog. Their songs often move in unexpected directions and are always pinned together by Rebecca Gillieron’s sometimes defiant/sometimes soft vocal melodies. After fine-tuning new songs to completion this year\, here’s a chance to hear material from their second album\, recently recorded by Toby Borrough from Pozi\, and being mixed as we write.https://theplan1.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nGROSS MISCONDUCT are a conceptually foggy\, bureaucratically sound landfill punk from South London. Featuring members of Killjoys\, MILKY\, Strong Arm and Surplus. FFO Exit Order\, The Cribs\, Be Your Own Pet and corporate telephone hold music. Fresh off probation\, mandatory training completed and ready for synergy. EP is upcoming\, check out their demo now!https://grossmisconduct69.bandcamp.com

SUMMARY:Editrix + Beige Palace + ES
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nEDITRIXBEIGE PALACEES \n\n\n\nEDITRIX is Steve Cameron\, Josh Daniel\, and Wendy Eisenberg. Steve plays bass; Josh plays the drums; Wendy plays the guitar and sings. Editrix came to life around 2018. Eisenberg had honed their skills as a jazz guitarist but was drawn to noise after growing frustrated by a limited area of study. Inspired by the Northeast’s thriving DIY scene\, they moved to Boston from the Washington\, D.C. suburbs. Editrix is as if you took borderline classical music in its crystalline perfection and obsessive attention to detail and then played it through Kurt Cobain’s Rat Pedal with not a shred of piety or decorum. This is doom-laden nihilism lovingly decorated in heart stickers from the first slide of guitar notes of the opening title track. It is caring\, pretending not to care\, resisting the emotive signals so abused in the mainstream\, which is what tells you that it really does care. It is the synthesis of the dialectic and the clarion call of the proletarian revolution. \n\n\n\n‘Editrix II’ is the group’s new album\, a record that’s impossible not to like. Do not expect calcified recreations of pre-existing bands\, even the ones Editrix loves. But if pop is anything to do with melody\, prepare yourself to sing along by the second line of each track. If it’s defined by rhythm\, warn your head not to get caught napping because it will shortly be banging. And if\, for you pop equals a full-on full-frequency sonic sickness\, this one grabs your ears by the ear lapels and never lets go. This is haiku rock\, its minimal lyrics compressing novels into a few syllables. It sounds like it came to their heads like a bolt of lightning. \n\n\n\nhttps://editrix.bandcamp.com/album/editrix-ii-editrix-goes-to-hell \n\n\n\nBEIGE PALACE is a minimalist trio from Leeds\, an irreverent kaleidoscope of noise rock\, post-hardcore\, musique concrete\, spoken word\, chamber music\, and general auditory mayhem. Check out their terrific album ‘Leg’ and their forthcoming ‘Waterloo Sublet’ 7” split with Cassels on their Bandcamp page.https://beigepalace.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nES returned with their incredible new EP ‘Fantasy’ (Upset The Rhythm) this month. A four-track contact-high anxiety amid fact and facsimile\, the new release attempts to define a sound that still resonates in an increasingly confused public theatre\, where cerebral dreams manifest in corrupt fascination. Echoing the legendary Pylon or the later disco-inspired releases from PIL tracks like ‘Emergency’ and ‘Unreal’ blend the band’s established disjunctive style of gothic restlessness with brighter\, poppy\, and danceable tunes. Es deconstruct our modern wreckage of personhood and self-deceit\, granting a sense of solidarity inside alienation. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://esband.bandcamp.com/\n\n\n\n\nSunday 4 JuneThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB7.30pm | £9 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/de59bbb09db5

SUMMARY:Cindy + Index For Working Musik
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nCINDYINDEX FOR WORKING MUSIKWednesday 26 AprilThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB7.30pm | £8.50 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/z790b084119e \n\n\n\nCINDY is a band built around the singing and guitar playing of Karina Gill\, who she self-nurtured after finding an abandoned Squier Strat in her San Francisco apartment basement. Her intrigue soon grew into the band that is Cindy\, who have found a worldwide following in their slow-moving\, dream-pop world that shrouds Gill’s songs thanks to support from model-independent labels Mt. St. Mtn. [USA] and Tough Love Records [UK].Cindy’s fourth LP\, Why Not Now? It will be released this April. The music captured is simply out of necessity and introverted in delivery\, but the songs contain vivid worlds and are quietly ambitious. With this latest batch\, Gill pulled the process of making Cindy’s music even more inward. “Some of these songs were recorded as demos alone in my basement. I think that process set the tone for the record…Maybe it set up a kind of starkness\,” she says. While the dream-pop tag is probably still relevant\, this isn’t an algorithm-fed genre ambience. Gill’s vocal/lyrical presence can be as gently momentous as Leonard Cohen’s or as intellectually potent as any ’79-’80 Rough Trade post-punk. Cindy’s Why Not Now? is that muffled street symphony inside a passing daydream.https://cindytheband.bandcamp.com/album/1-2 \n\n\n\nINDEX FOR WORKING MUSIK released their debut album ’Dragging the Needlework for the Kids at Uphole’ via Tough Love. 35 minutes of repeat phrased guitars\, slow-clipped drums and dulcet vocals where the recurring landscape is the desert. Reel-to-reel-loops of Afghan music compete with the found sound overlays of voices recorded at the queue of the pharmacy and drum machines borrowed from Spanish heroes\, channelling both far-off climes and snippets from a closer reality. It’s a strange psychic brew\, built of imagined mysticism and domestic realities\, of fever dreams and days that stretched into weeks of months.https://indexforworkingmusik.bandcamp.com

After the band’s breakup in 1979\, she continued her career as a solo artist\, releasing a collaborative single with Ryuichi Sakamoto in 1980 and her first solo album\, ‘Phew’\, with Conny Plank\, Holger Czukay of CAN\, and Jaki Liebezeit in 1981. In 1992\, her third album\, OurLikeness\, was released on MUTE\, again at Conny’s studio\, with Jaki Liebezeit of CAN\, Alexander Hacke of Einstürzende Neubauten\, and Chrislo Haas of DAF. This is THE best way to meet confident\, gorgeous\, like-minded single femme lesbian and bisexual women just like you… and this is the perfect opportunity for you to grab a date for those Halloween parties coming soon. She has also released collaborative works with Ana da Silva (Raincoats)\, Seiichi Yamamoto (Boredoms) and others. Phew’s expansive album ‘Vertical Jamming’ is being released on vinyl for the first time via Disciples on 28 October\, a special run on clear vinyl housed in a Studio Tape-Echo sleeve. A small number of advance copies will be on sale at this London show.https://phewjapan.bandcamp.com/music \n\n\n\nMODEL HOME is a hyper prolific experimental hip-hop formation from Washington D.C.\, instigated by rapper NappyNappa and producer Pat Cain. The duo recruits an ever-changing cast of collaborators to give each record a new feel: Model Home can sound like a post-modern take on old-school hip-hop\, glitchy noise or even improvised exploration. The gist of Model Home is that the music pours out like a faucet\, faithfully channelling the chaos of everyday thought. Model Home’s music would blend right in with a dystopia. The deteriorating sounds of Patrick Cain’s electronics would be impossible to distinguish from the constant construction that is the score of any contemporary city; NappyNappa’s enigmatic missives would be lost in the roar of public service announcements\, personalized advertisements\, and omnipresent sirens. Built on the edifice of dub sound systems and DIY basement clatter\, their sound comprises slabs of textured noise and decayed vocals. Disciples just released the duo’s sensational new album ‘Saturn In The Basement’ and its companion cassette; go seek!https://modelhomedc.bandcamp.com/

His three albums recorded for Domino Records between 2000-2008 echo throughout much of contemporary pop music. The first of the trilogy\, Some Best Friend You Turned Out To Be\, is more or less the most experimental; the second\, Mastered By Guy At The Exchange\, perhaps the most joyful; and the third\, Parallax Error Beheads You\, the most riotous. All three albums remain essential\, and three are being reissued by Domino this summer! A remix mixtape entitled Remixtape featuring the likes of Julia Holter and Kero Kero Bonito will also arrive alongside the reissues on August 12th. The hyper pop pioneer has collaborated with the likes of Arca\, Daphne & Celeste and A. G. Cook. The natural musical predecessor to the likes of PC Music\, Max Tundra also boasts a remix roster which includes Pet Shop Boys\, The Strokes and Franz Ferdinand. Join us for a very special concert from Max Tundra to celebrate these reissues on September 2nd\, to the very day the exact 20th anniversary of landmark album release ‘Mastered By Guy At The Exchange’.https://www.maxtundra.com/ \n\n\n\nBAS JAN is a London-based ensemble; this year\, they returned with an expanded line-up and a much-anticipated second album ‘Baby U Know’ (Lost Map). It is the follow-up to the critically acclaimed 2018 debut album Yes I Jan\, which was hailed for its “messy majesty” (Uncut) and “beautifully fractured art-pop” (Mojo). Bas Jan was co-founded in 2015 by songwriter\, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Serafina Steer. The majority of their 17 full-length albums have the psychedelic soul of traditional New Orleans party music\, filtered through a vintage Hammond B-3\, technicolor puppets\, and a battalion of distorted\, homemade instruments. This summer\, the duo will be joined on tour by two New Orleans musicians\, drummer Sam Yoger and “talk boxer” Benni Divine\, to recreate their most recent Goner LP\, ‘Goblin Alert’ as well as butchering the best of the old songs. The Quintron / Miss Pussycat experience is one of barely controlled electronic chaos\, “Swamp-Tech” dance beats\, small explosions\, incredible clothes\, and entertaining puppet stories. \n\n\n\nQuintron and Miss Pussycat’s sweaty musical blasts are paralleled in spirit and performance by Miss Pussycat’s dreamy puppet worlds – elaborate\, and beautifully crafted for success in intimate venues of late- night drinking and dancing. She has also had several major solo museum exhibitions and\, although the puppets are never for sale\, ceramics\, paintings and other visual work related to her puppetry\, are represented by the Webb Gallery in Waxahachie Texas.http://www.quintronandmisspussycat.com/ \n\n\n\nBRUNO AND THE OUTRAGEOUS METHODS OF PRESENTATION is a situationist / aktionist un-group masterminded by the precocious teenage brat Bruno Bof Wilkinson. Bruno is a multi-faceted neuro-amazing proto-superstar\, splatter-gunning golden gems of power-pop\, garage-punk\, nihilistic electro-void darkness and plain super-catchy teeth-rattlers. Created in Bristol in 2006 from Brazilian/English motherfatherlodes he’s played with The Nightingales\, Damo Suzuki\, Adulkt Life\, Babyshakes\, Beak and a whole bunch more. You can see him fronting his own band\, The Outrageous Methods Of Presentation\, guesting with Bristol garage indie-punk legends Bucky\, fronting Bath oi-punks Shiner and occasionally bursts to the front of the stage to guest with Alter Moderns. Bruno appeals to fans of Crime\, Jonathan Richman\, Guided By Voices\, Electric Eels\, The Kinks\, Television\, The Stooges\, Swell Maps and Huggy Bear! \n\n\n\n\nhttps://outrageousmethodsofpresentation.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:VINTAGE CROP + MARCEL WAVE + PUBLIC BODY
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nVINTAGE CROPMARCEL WAVEPUBLIC BODYSaturday 9 JulyThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB7.30pm | £8 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/A73a9f0863c6 \n\n\n\nVINTAGE CROP are Geelong’s favourite sons\, returning this summer with their much-anticipated fourth album\, ‘Kibitzer’. Running with the ball that 2020’s “Serve To Serve Again” punted forward\, this album marks another energetic break towards the goal for Vintage Crop. ‘Kibitzer’ sees the band define their field of play\, more melodic at times\, still bruising\, forever droll. These ten tracks of ‘snappy as elastic’ Australian punk are packed with tensile riffage\, hefty beats and witty refrains of everyman curiosity. ‘Kibitzer’ delves into themes of identity\, resilience and acceptance; some of the more upbeat notions that the band have dealt with to date. ‘Casting Calls’ opens the record\, slamming through the speakers with gusto and setting the tone for the following 30 minutes. These themes hit home with the album’s title too\, with Cherry feeling that ‘Kibitzer’ is an apt way to describe a lot of the band’s focus. “I feel like a lot of our lyrics over the years have been our unsolicited opinions on other people’s situations\, the very definition of the word Kibitzer. So for this record we wanted to lean into that tendency by acknowledging it and even go as far as stamping it on the album cover.” \n\n\n\n\nhttps://vintagecrop.bandcamp.com/\n\n\n\n\nMARCEL WAVE write eulogies for tragic actresses\, ancient riverbeds and concrete obscenity. Meades meets Pat-E-Smith meets Kirklees Borough Council. Featuring members of Cold Pumas and Sauna Youth. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://marcel-wave.bandcamp.com/releases\n\n\n\n\nPUBLIC BODY have from the cradle to a 9-5 job been buried in unread emails and PMQ youtube alerts\, tackling issues such as Question Time Bias and Workplace Etiquette. Public Body formed in Brighton in late 2018 with a clear aim to write the perfect soundtrack to whatever you do whilst procrastinating at your day job.https://publicbody.bandcamp.com/
