SUMMARY:The Music of Alice Coltrane & Dorothy Ashby
DESCRIPTION:“Alina Bzhezhinska… a modern-day supremo\, is the among the best contemporary harpists” Evening Standard \n“…Bzhezhinska shares with Alice (Coltrane) a mastery of the jazz harp.” ★★★★★\, The Times \nThe sound of the harp has always held a special place in the world of jazz\, and that’s down to the work of two artists alone; Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane. \nDespite both using the same instrument\, their musicality and approach to the craft differed immensely. Ashby’s sound ranged from the trad to the plaintive\, with standout albums Hip Harp\, Afro Harping and Django/ Misty\, plus The Swinging Harp of Dorothy Ashby (which turns 60 this year)\, across her oeuvre showcasing the harp’s versatility. \nBy contrast\, the harp for Coltrane worked as an extension of her profound spirituality\, whilst also indulging her avant-garde tendencies as heard on her magnum opus\, Journey in Satchidananda. \nPutting together the bespoke show will be London based harpist Alina Bzhezhinska and her collective Hip Harp. \nLine Up:\nAlina Bzhezhinska – Harp\nTony Kofi – Saxophone\nMikele Montolli – Electric Bass\nAdam Teixeira – Drums \nHire a Harpist \n

DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to present two of the most exciting acts to come out of Manchester’s bubbling scene of neo soul\, jazz and beyond. \nSecret Night Gang are the latest signing to Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood record label\, breathing new life into the classic British street-soul sound. \nFounding members Callum Connell & Kemani Anderson have shared a love of writing music together since they were 14 year old school friends. Having made her debut on the Future Bubblers programme\, it’s a Brownswood family affair all the way through.

SUMMARY:Katy J Pearson
DESCRIPTION:A hazy dusk falls on a crossroads somewhere between Gloucestershire and Bristol. A wooden signpost points in two directions: good ol’ fashioned country heartache to the left; effortless pop hooks to the right – and underneath\, cross-legged on still-warm car bonnet\, sits Katy J Pearson\, strumming an acoustic guitar as she spins a tale of blossoming dancefloor romance. \nCombining an incredibly unique voice with a penchant for timeless melody\, the Heavenly Recordings-signed Pearson – recently seen on tour with Cass Mccombs and Pinegrove – pens tracks that only could have come from her years growing up in the rolling hills of the West Country. \nHaving first explored songwriting as one half of dream-pop duo Ardyn\, her new solo project casts an intimate light upon her distinctive lyricism / vocal combo\, all the while refining her portrayal of the wondrous world around her. Her songs convey a glorious nostalgia\, refreshingly at odds with the rush and fury of modern life.

SUMMARY:Loathe
DESCRIPTION:The heavy music group from Liverpool have emerged as one of the most exciting in Britain. Pioneering a creative new approach with their eclectic mix of sound and atmospheric live shows\, this must-see band will take you on a journey through metallic belters\, heartfelt melodies and back again. \nTheir second album I Let It in and It Took Everything is responsible for the recent fuss\, leading to comparisons with Deftones for their refusal to be shackled by musical boundaries. Fusing shoegazey\, ambient soundscapes with metallic crunch and hardcore they’re unlike anyone else on the scene in Britain. Many regard them as the future of UK metal\, paving the way to making heavy music mainstream again.

Making her music as much about feminist expression as it is about creative gratification\, Bond is opinionated\, forceful and she has a point to make\, artistically and politically. And the word has spread. \nEtta is not only signed to Labrinth’s Odd Child label\, but over the past few years\, she’s smoothly worked with everyone from Wretch 32 to Plan B\, Bonkaz and Skepta\, testament to her individuality as an artist that she’s attracted such top-tier talent. \nEarly Show: 18:00-21:00 \nLate Show: 21:45-00:30

SUMMARY:Jay Phelps Album Launch
DESCRIPTION:Prominent Canadian trumpeter and renowned band leader and educator Jay Phelps presents his fifth album Live at The Cockpit\, followed by a live performance of his high-octane headline show from last year’s London Latin Jazz Festival: Afro-Cubanismo. \nRecorded in 2018 for the first ever J to Z show for BBC 3\, it was curated at The Cockpit Theatre with help from Jez Nelson and Chris Philips and their famed ‘Jazz in the Round’ show. It’s fitting that we can now celebrate its release in person\, with the live atmosphere heard on the recording harking back to more normal times. \nJay’s relentless energy and excitement has also led to other interesting projects\, namely a Cuban-centric headline show at London Latin Jazz Festival in 2019. He’ll be re-uniting this highly-praised show to cap off an incredible evening of music.

SUMMARY:Fela Kuti's Birthday with Bukky Leo & Black Egypt Collective
DESCRIPTION:Fela’s former bandmate Bukky Leo and his Black Egypt collective honour the life and legacy of a musical icon. \nA pioneer of the afrobeat genre\, Fela gifted the world songs like ‘Beasts of No Nation’\, ‘Zombie’ and ‘Water Get No Enemy’. \nBukky himself is undoubtedly one of the most important afrobeat musicians alive today. His ‘Felabration’ show here in Camden two years ago\, paying homage to the great man’s music\, was such a hit that we felt we needed to bring Bukky back for more of the same.

SUMMARY:The Howl & The Hum
DESCRIPTION:Following the successful release of their debut album Human Contact on AWAL\, this is the breakthrough year for the euphoric folk-pop group. \nAt the heart of The How and The Hum is a strong song-writing core and an inventive\, progressive use of the guitar. Likened to Massive Attack\, Radiohead and Alt-J\, they’ve received strong press support for their wonderfully ambitious lyrics and deeply emotional vocals. \nWith their debut inspired by personal connections and shared relationships\, its fitting that they can return to the stage once more for a delayed but spell-binding celebration of this highly-regarded album.
