SUMMARY:We Have Never Been Modern + Q&A with actress Eliška Křenková\, director Matěj Chlupáček (tbc)\, and producer Maja Hamplová
DESCRIPTION:Helena (the excellent Eliška Křenková) leaves her family and medical studies to start a family and help build the Baťa-inspired town of Svit in a rural mountain area with her husband\, Alois\, a factory director. Although outspoken and unafraid to stand up for what’s right\, she initially takes a backseat to Alois’ ambitions\, but launches her own secret investigation when the shocking discovery of a dead intersex newborn is made in their factory. Facing resistance from both local authorities and her husband\, all eager to protect the status quo and image of progress\, Helena becomes determined to expose the hidden truths\, even as it risks her marriage and her life. Set on the brink of WWII this beautifully shot detective drama masterfully explores privilege\, prejudice\, and gender identity\, delving into themes of otherness in a rapidly modernizing society. \nMatěj Chlupáček\, Czech Republic\, Slovak Republic 2023; 117´\, English subtitles\nCast: Eliška Křenková\, Miloslav König\, Milan Ondrík\, Richard Langdon\, Martha Issová \nKarlovy Vary International Film Festival\n13 nominations for Czech Lion Award 2023\nThe Best Screenplay The Sun in the Net Festival 2023

SUMMARY:Nightsiren + Q&A with director Tereza Nvotová
DESCRIPTION:A harrowing\, yet beautiful take on patriarchy and internalised misogyny. \n\n30 year-old-Šarlota returns to the mountain village she escaped from 20 years earlier following a tragic incident involving her sister. Taking up residence in the cabin she has inherited\, Šarlota starts searching for answers regarding her troubled childhood. In her quest to uncover the truth she is confronted by the misogyny of superstitious villagers with only young herbalist Mira on her side. The tension grows\, strange events and whispers of evil begin to invade reality leading the villagers to accuse Šarlota of witchcraft and murder.  Striking cinematography with swirling mists and a mysterious forest links women and nature and delivers a haunting atmosphere filled with sense of isolation in this enignatic and beguiling drama which won the main prize at the 2022 Locarno Film Festival. \nDir. SUMMARY:Occupation + Q&A with director Michal Nohejl
DESCRIPTION:The movie is part of the 26th Made in Prague Festival organised by Czech Centre London. The popular multi-genre festival is back again for its 26th edition. Representing one of the oldest national celebrations of European culture in the UK\, the festival presents an exciting programme covering film\, music\, science\, visual art and literature in various venues across London and beyond. Take your pick and immerse yourself in Czech culture this fall. \nVoted the Best Czech Film 2021 by critics\, this black comedy thriller fuelled by vodka\, cigarettes\, and cowardice hilariously investigates Czech-Soviet relations. After a premiere\, the theatre group is celebrating in a bar when an uninvited guest crashes the party. A drunken Russian officer has come to sell a can of petrol\, but soon the business transaction turns into a vodka-drinking race. The Russian\, interested in beautiful Milada and entertained by the comedic cowardice of the men\, simply won‘t leave… Spinning out of control\, the game becomes a trap\, heroes become cowards\, and cowards become heroes. Influenced by Milos Forman’s The Firemen’s Ball with a touch of Tarantino and The Good Soldier Schweik\, this allegorical\, pitch-black comedy delivers a highly original contribution to the topic of the invasion and is extremely relevant in today´s climate.

SUMMARY:Bethlehem Light + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Karel Šejnoha (Zdeněk Svěrák’s alter ego)\, a well-known\, aging writer\, faces writer‘s block. He has a head full of unfinished stories whose fictional characters start to appear in real life\, lobbying for their stories to be finally completed. Each and every one of them demands something. The photographer Matěj wants the beautiful but unapproachable pharmacist Vendula\, the car mechanic\, Bakalář\, would like to be a healer\, and Bohumil asks for a miracle for his son. And there is also Šejnoha’s wife who feels neglected and wants her husband to devote himself to her instead of writing. The intertwined stories pass freely from reality to fiction and back\, exploring love\, marriage\, faith\, and miracles. This is a bitter-sweet comedy with a stellar cast from the Oscar winner Jan Svěrák (Kolya)\, full of humour\, irony\, and clever dialogue.
