SUMMARY:9005 – Solo Exhibition by Othello De’Souza-Hartley
DESCRIPTION:For his solo exhibition at Bomb Factory Art Foundation conceptual artist Othello De’Souza-Hartley has teamed up with architect Laura Büchi and sound artist Elliott Buchanan who share his interest in the inter-dependencies of mind and body\, inner peace and external structures. \nDe’Souza-Hartley examines the human body and its imperfections by drawing parallels between skin tones and textures and architectural structures\, in particular the subtle variations evident in cast concrete. Working exclusively in black he creates tension by contrasting smooth surfaces with thick crusts of paint and integrating discarded objects and building materials into large scale paintings. \nThe exhibition title refers to the code number for pure black\, according to a colour chart dating back to 1920s Germany which is still used as standard by architects and designers today. The body of work in 9005 questions the pursuit of perfection and the hierarchy of materials\, reflecting the artist’s belief that art transcends notions of division or rank. \nA tranquil composition of structural\, material and sonic elements complements the large scale paintings surrounding it. Blacking out the external distractions of city life\, the collaborative sculpture provides a tranquil sanctuary for introversion and contemplation. \n  \n24 October – 9 November 2024 \nWednesday – Saturday\, 1-6pm (Thursday 7pm)\, Sunday 11am – 5pm \nThe Bomb Factory (Holborn)\, 99 Kingsway\, London WC2B 6QX

SUMMARY:The Party's Over - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Ringing in the season of cracker crowns\, colourful balloons\, and party favours\, the sculptures in Doireann Gillan’s solo exhibition resemble symbols of joy and excitement as well as harbingers of loneliness and nostalgia. \n  \nSqueezed\, stretched and bent out of shape\, discarded industrial materials and soft spheres defy their prescribed functions as negative space and shadows compete with the objects they depend on. Oscillating between rage\, restraint and revelry\, their behaviour and appearance challenge historically gendered attributes. \n  \nGillan’s installations are metaphors for the tension between a desire for happiness and the collapse of the social structures necessary to meet this -for the unachievable aspirations in an era of heightened political and economic precarity. \n  \nThe Party’s Over is a playful provocation to take risks and bring about change.
