SUMMARY:WARA X Kallemi [Palestina-Latina Takeover]
DESCRIPTION:War on Want\, MARSM UK and Movimientos Present: Wara & Kallemi \nA dynamic double bill showcasing some of the most powerful Latin American and Palestinian acts on the scene. From piercing Cuban timba to unapologetic Arabic hip-hop\, dembow and folklore\, this electrifying lineup celebrates the revolutionary power of music from Latin America to the Middle East. \nWARA\nPlaying deep into the rhythms of urban Latin America\, Wara is an award-winning musical outfit that fuels its signature sound with bass-heavy dembow\, biting synths and hip-hop. \nLed by producer and composer Eliane Correa\, the band formed in 2010\, and has since become known for powering a Latin American narrative that celebrates regional music cultures such as mambo and cumbia. With backgrounds spanning from Cuba to Congo\, Venezuela and Chile\, Wara’s performances are a musical homage to their heritage; provocative and potent\, a Pan-Latin powerhouse that’s paving a way of its own. \nKallemi (كلّمي)\nBorn on the path between Basel and Ramallah\, Kallemi emerged from a collaborative musical project between Swiss\, Dominican and Palestinian musicians. Blending deep buttery beats with world influenced percussions\, dipped in distorted unapologetic guitars – soulful\, delicate yet fierce singing added with Arabic\, English and Latino hip-hop. \nStarting as an exchange project initiated by Kaserne Basel in 2018\, the group first met in Ramallah and worked intensely focusing on a one-time show. Yet as soon as they finished their performance in Basel\, it was clear to everyone that the project would not stop here. \n______________________________________________________\nThis event is 16+. Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian.\nULU is wheelchair accessible. \nThis evening is sponsored by War on Want & Alaraby TV.\nWar on Want will be showcasing their work fighting the root causes of global poverty\, inequality and injustice. Join the fight today.

SUMMARY:Alsarah and the Nubatones / Juliana Yazbeck
DESCRIPTION:A full night celebrating East African retro grooves\, contemporary Arabic soul and electric rebellious poetry. \nALSARAH AND THE NUBATONES\nA spellbinding journey into Nubian musical heritage\, Alsarah & The Nubatones are a 5-piece collective led by the eponymous Sudanese singer\, songwriter and ethnomusicologist Alsarah. Her inspiring and innovative voice has become a trademark for the burgeoning scene of ‘East-African retro-pop’ as well as being involved in numerous initiatives such as the stellar ‘Nile Project’ and collaborating with French producer Débruit. \nMeanwhile\, The Nubatones craft an eclectic mix of north and east African tunes with Arabic influences. Inspired by the pentatonic scale they blend a selection of Nubian ‘songs of return’ from the 1970s until today with original material and traditional music of central Sudan; their set is a musical journey through diaspora and migration through an urban lens. \nJULIANA YAZBECK\nBorn to Lebanese parents\, Juliana draws on her mixed cultural upbringing to create her signature sound: an unlikely but mesmerising fusion of spoken word\, otherworldly electronics\, and haunting Levantine vocals. \nJuliana Yazbeck’s debut record SUNGOD is a political and spiritual cry; a journey of celebrating our pre-Westernised identities. Unapologetic and raw\, Juliana’s lyrics challenge the effects of colonisation on cultural identities and its impact on the current state of love\, relationships and gender inequality. It is a call to shed internalised shame: to remember\, reawaken\, and reclaim our inherent and divine beauty… both as women and as autonomous peoples. \nOpening and closing on the night is none other than DJ Saliah. \nThis event has been made possible with support from Al Araby TV. \n——————————————————–\n14+.
