SUMMARY:LIFEM 2021: Ensemble Pro Victoria
DESCRIPTION:LIFEM 2021: Ensemble Pro Victoria\n“I Was Glad: Music of the English Baroque” \nJoint winners of the 2020 Young Ensemble Competition\, Ensemble Pro Victoria\, return for their winners’ recital. \nENSEMBLE PRO VICTORIA \nEnsemble Pro Victoria is one of the most refined young early music ensembles in Britain. Founded at Cambridge University in 2015 by Toby Ward (artistic director) and Humphrey Thompson (editor\, baritone)\, they focus on music from Tudor England\, the Spanish Golden Age and the early Baroque. Most often\, the group performs one-to-a-part\, bringing music to life through the beauty of solo singing instead of a choral approach. \n \nThe seven core members of the group were thrilled to win a joint-first prize in the London International Festival of Early Music Young Ensemble Competition 2020. With a programme of music from the Spanish Golden Age\, they are delighted to return to the London International Festival in 2021 to perform Baroque music from the English and French chapels royal. \nEPV enjoys a close relationship with Professor Magnus Williamson (Newcastle University) and the Tudor Partbooks project; road-testing reconstructions of fragmented works\, performing research using a replica Tudor choir book lectern and making the first recordings of recovered repertoire. \nRecent highlights have included a pared-down Bach St John Passion as part of the ensemble’s online series ‘Live from St Mary’s\, London’ and Tudor Music Afterlives. A filmed recital of Tudor music which lived on in secret after the reformation and Elizabethan Emblems. A programme tracking the effect of the reformation from Catholic polyphony to the height of the Jacobean verse anthem tradition. All supported and advised by William Hunt of Fretwork. \nEnsemble Pro Victoria’s first professional album\, The Robert Fayrfax Quincentenary on Scotland’s Gramophone award-winning classical label Delphian Records\, will be released in October 2021. It is the first recording made of some of the essential music of the Tudor Era; Henry VIII’s nuptial mass to Catherine of Aragon\, the seven surviving courtly songs featuring beautiful early English poetry\, and further reconstructions from the Eton Choirbook (c.1505)\, with celebrated lutenist Toby Carr.

SUMMARY:LIFEM 2021: Liam Byrne - Concert in London
DESCRIPTION:Concert in London – “Lessons for Lyra Viol” – Liam Byrne (viola de gamba)\nAt around the same time\, John Dowland was writing his famously beautiful music for solo lute. His contemporary Alfonso Ferrabosco the Younger composed a collection of equally gorgeous\, subtle\, and elegant pieces for solo viola. Heard all too rarely today\, the repertoire is highly complex\, chordal and contrapuntal\, with Ferrabosco asking the player to tune his instrument in various non-standard ways to achieve unique resonances. As a result\, we often describe the viol as a bowed lute\, particularly in this writing style\, called playing lyra way or playing the lyra viol\, where this close relationship between the lute and viol is most apparent. \n \nThe Lyra viol’s bow is light and flexible\, and it does something halfway between plucking and singing\, like filling in the ink drawing of lute playing with strokes of delicate watercolour. In this program\, Liam Byrne intersperses selections from Ferrabosco’s 1609 collection of lyra viol lessons with some anonymous gems from unpublished manuscript sources\, as well as works by William Lawes\, Daniel Farrant\, and others. \n \nThe lyra viol is the ultimate unaccompanied repertoire for the viol. Introspective\, intimate\, and delicate\, it flourished in Britain throughout the 17th century. One of its more well-known proponents was the diarist Samuel Pepys\, who often writes of playing alone on his lyra viol before bed.

SUMMARY:LIFEM 2021: Liam Byrne & Jonas Nordberg - London International Festival of Early Music
DESCRIPTION:LIFEM 2021: Liam Byrne & Jonas Nordberg – London International Festival of Early Music\nFeaturing a World Premiere by Errollyn Wallen\, we are delighted to welcome leading exponents of their instruments\, Liam Byrne and Jonas Nordberg\, to open the London International Festival of Early Music\, with special guest Lucy Crowe. \nWith special guest Lucy Crowe\, soprano \nThe particular blend of viol and theorbo is among the Baroque period’s most delicious sonic combinations. In this concert\, Liam Byrne and Jonas Nordberg explore the rich timbral interrelationships of their instruments in the music of 17th century France. Focussing on the historical relationship between viol player Marin Marais and lutenist Robert de Visée\, both central musical figures at the court of Louis XIV\, the duo draws its inspiration from the contrasting natures of their instruments. \n \nFinding overlapping resonances in the decays and bloomings of their sounds\, they move through the perfumed harmonies of some of the past’s finest\, most refined chamber music. In addition to works by Marais\, de Visée\, and Sainte Colombe\, Jonas and Liam perform new and old rearrangements of music popular at the French court\, including works by Lully and Rameau\, among others. \nJonas Nordberg and Liam Byrne met over bacon sandwiches at breakfast with friends in London in 2016 and quickly fell into fairly deep conversation about baroque music. Finding themselves on a similar conceptual wavelength\, they decided to meet up later that day and play through some 17th-century French chamber music. The result was so satisfying that they spent their spare time hopping between London\, Stockholm\, and Berlin for the next three years to hang out and rehearse\, without a concert in sight\, just pure music-making at home and a few tiny house concerts. Finally\, in March 2019\, they gave their first public concert\, and their duo project has continued to flourish ever since.
