SUMMARY:London Philharmonic Orchestra: Swan Lake
DESCRIPTION:A handsome prince\, a wicked wizard and a swan princess: Swan Lake might be a ballet about black magic and doomed love\, but the real sorcery comes from Tchaikovsky’s ravishing score. That’s the climax of this concert – but make no mistake\, tonight there’s wonder from first note to last. Weber’s fairytale overture opens the portals of enchantment\, and the award-winning young American cellist Zlatomir Fung sprinkles his own brand of stardust on the delightful Rococo Variations. Tchaikovsky meets Mozart\, with a twinkle in his eye. \n  \nRepertoire \nWeber Overture\, Oberon (10’) \nTchaikovsky Variations on a Rococo Theme (18’) \nTchaikovsky Selections from Swan Lake (40’) \n  \nPerformers \nTianyi Lu conductor \nZlatomir Fung cello

SUMMARY:LPO: A Dark Century
DESCRIPTION:As part of the LPO’s exploration of memory\, Andrey Boreyko conducts three testaments from a dark century. \n  \nThree composers cry out in the void. Confronted by unimaginable horror\, Schoenberg rediscovered his Jewish roots\, and created a musical drama of savage\, defiant courage\, in tribute to the Holocaust victims. In Soviet Russia\, the authorities expected Shostakovich to write a propaganda symphony: but what they got was a searing denunciation of man’s inhumanity to man – more potent\, and more urgent than ever in 2024. As part of our exploration of memory\, Andrey Boreyko conducts three testaments from a dark century – with the incomparable Gidon Kremer as soloist in the Violin Concerto by Mieczysław Weinberg: composer\, survivor and Shostakovich’s most devoted friend. \n  \nFree pre-concert event: \nLPO 2024/25 Writer-in-Residence Jeremy Eichler gives a talk on this evening’s programme. 6.15–6.45pm in the Royal Festival Hall.

SUMMARY:LPO: Tchaikovsky’s Sixth with Karina Canellakis
DESCRIPTION:Karina Canellakis presents an emotion-packed programme with Tchaikovsky’s tragic final symphony. \nWaves crash\, tempests rise\, and emotions surge and roar so fiercely that the words to express them don’t exist. That’s where music comes in\, and when LPO Principal Guest Conductor Karina Canellakis is holding the baton\, there’ll be no holding back. Passion is the key tonight\, whether Kaija Saariaho’s opening Lumière et Pesanteur\, Beethoven’s darkest concerto (with the charismatic Ukrainian pianist Vadym Kholodenko at the keyboard) or Tchaikovsky’s tragic\, autobiographical final symphony. ‘Pathétique’ means ‘full of emotion’\, and if you’ve already experienced Canellakis’s special chemistry with the players of the LPO\, you’ll know how to bring the tissues. \nRepertoire \nSaariaho Lumière et Pesanteur (6’) \nBeethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 (34’) \nTchaikovsky Symphony No. 6 (Pathétique) (45’) \nPerformers \nKarina Canellakis conductor \nVadym Kholodenko piano

SUMMARY:LPO: Karina Canellakis conducts Schumann & Bruckner
DESCRIPTION:From forest shadows to sunlit peaks\, quiet melancholy to heaven-storming joy. Karina Canellakis presents a programme of passion and adventure. \nMists swirl\, the air shivers and a solitary horn sounds a call to adventure somewhere far away. There might be symphonies that open more beautifully than Bruckner’s Fourth\, but we can’t think of any! And that’s just the beginning of a musical journey that sweeps from forest shadows to sunlit peaks\, quiet melancholy to heaven-storming joy. In Bruckner’s 200th anniversary year\, the LPO’s inspirational Principal Guest Conductor Karina Canellakis makes it the climax of a deeply romantic programme that also stars cellist Truls Mørk in the tender\, passionate music of Robert Schumann – a composer with the soul of a poet.

SUMMARY:A Hero’s Life
DESCRIPTION:Sir Mark Elder presents a programme of storytelling starring Strauss’s stupendous Ein Heldenleben. \nWe’re all the heroes of our own lives. Strauss’s contemporaries couldn’t see the funny side of Ein Heldenleben (‘A Hero’s Life’): a riotously tuneful self-portrait of the artist as a superhero\, written for a colossal orchestra and featuring some of the most spectacular sounds ever imagined. The great Sir Mark Elder brings all his matchless flair for musical storytelling to a concert that opens in the shimmering wonderland of Ravel’s fairytale ballet and stars Canadian virtuoso James Ehnes in the underrated sequel to Bruch’s ever-popular First Violin Concerto. It’s rarely heard – and it’s a delight.

SUMMARY:LPO: Patricia Kopatchinskaja plays Shostakovich
DESCRIPTION:Repertoire \nBritten – Sinfonia da Requiem (21’) \nShostakovich – Violin Concerto No. 1 (36’) \nSibelius – Symphony No. 5 (31’) \nPerformers \nEdward Gardner – conductor \nPatricia Kopatchinskaja – violin \n  \nBig music demands big personalities\, and they don’t come much bigger than violinist and all-round phenomenon Patricia Kopatchinskaja. \nSibelius sees a flight of swans on a summer evening and hears a melody that could have been wrought from the elements. Britten opens the emotional floodgates and creates one of 20th-century music’s mightiest outpourings of grief. And Shostakovich whispers secrets in the shadows in a concerto that refuses to be silent. It’s all about memory and all about truth. Big music demands big personalities\, and they don’t come much bigger than violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja: virtuoso\, storyteller and all-round phenomenon. With Edward Gardner conducting\, she’ll drive straight to the heart of this powerful programme.

SUMMARY:Reich/Richter
DESCRIPTION:Minimalist master Steve Reich returns to his New York art scene roots in this bright and rhythmically agile piece\, written and performed alongside painter Gerhard Richter’s film Moving Picture. The film starts with a two-pixel pulsating\, colour-shifting line\, which becomes four pixels\, then sixteen\, then 32 and so on. The music starts with a two-note oscillation that expands equally but then becomes liberated from the structure of the forms on film\, allowing notes to escape and create their own destiny in this cool and elegant piece. Music by two other masters of the New York scene complements Reich’s music\, while the London Sinfonietta\, with Sound Intermedia\, re-create Nunu\, its commission from the late and sadly missed Mira Calix. \n\n\n\nJulia Wolfe  Tell me everythingJulius Eastman  Joy BoyMira Calix  NunuAnna Clyne  Fractured TimeSteve Reich  Reich / Richter

DESCRIPTION:This time\, the fully-fledged festival dedicated to video game soundtracks will take place at the famous Royal Festival Hall in London. On the 5th and 6th of March 2022\, the venue will play host to original arrangements of fan-favourite video game soundtracks and various accompanying events. In addition\, an educational programme will take place on the first day\, while the second day will be dedicated to live concerts. The three previous editions of the Game Music Festival have been praised by fans worldwide\, attracting an audience of over 12\,000 on-site guests in total. The Game Music Foundation organises the whole initiative\, and tickets are now available at gmfest.com. \nThe Jazz of Cuphead is the first concert at GMF 2022. The exuberant jazz score of Cuphead\, an unmistakably stylish platformer\, will be interpreted on stage by a seasoned big band. Full of early styles of jazz mixed with ragtime music\, the original soundtrack of Cuphead swiftly transports the listener to a world inspired by Duke Ellington and Count Basie\, but always with a twist. All of this has led to Cuphead winning the well-deserved BAFTA Games Award for Best Music. Cuphead’s composer\, Kristofer Maddigan\, will join the audience to see his score brought to life by the Bartosz Pernal Orchestra – an ensemble of experienced musicians led by a charismatic trombone player. \nLauded by critics and millions of fans worldwide upon release\, Ori and the Will of the Wisps was soon hailed as a masterpiece\, with exceptional merit given to its unforgettable score by Gareth Coker\, a multi-BAFTA-nominated composer and winner of the 2021 Ivor Novello Award for Best Original Video Game Score. Together with Ori and the Blind Forest\, these universally acclaimed soundtracks comprise the musical programme of The Symphony of the Spirits\, the second concert of Game Music Festival 2022. These arrangements have been created by maestro Robert Kurdybacha\, who is no stranger to the music of video games – he has arranged several fan-favourite symphonies for previous editions of the festival. Gareth Coker will also attend this special occasion at the Royal Festival Hall. The performance by the Philharmonia Orchestra and Hertfordshire Chorus will take the audience on a journey through Ori’s world as never before. \nGame Music Festival will present these concerts and multiple educational events. On Saturday the 5th of March\, the GMF 2022 educational programme will host masterclass workshops and other sessions\, where participants will be able to see how audio is created for games\, improve their skills and learn many tips and tricks in the field. Details of the educational programme will be unveiled later on. These sessions will be a unique opportunity to look into the world of music and sound in modern video games. This will be an excellent event for anyone who plans to build a career composing or designing sound in games.

SUMMARY:Michel Legrand Remembered: Keep the Music Playing
DESCRIPTION:Go back to the time of Jazz with Michel Legrand. Pay tribute to the era-defining composer at an evening of jazz and cinema classics with the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra and special guests. \nWith James Pearson at the helm\, the Orchestra is joined by celebrated songstress Alison Moyet\, multiple Olivier Award winner Maria Friedman\, rising jazz star Richard Hadfield and renowned classical violinist Tasmin Little\, and many more guests still to be announced. \nA three-time Oscar and five-time Grammy Award winner\, Legrand’s unique ear for a memorable tune and his towering skills as a jazz pianist and composer are honoured in powerful arrangements of some of his greatest hits\, including ‘The Windmills of Your Mind’\, ‘Ray Blues’\, ‘Summer of 42’\, ‘The Umbrellas of Cherbourg’\, ‘Dingo Rock’ and ‘Yentl’. \nFollowing Legrand’s death in January\, this concert\, which was to have been a celebration of his international standing as a jazz musician\, now becomes a tribute to his everlasting impact on 20th century music – unforgettable melodies imprinted on the history of jazz\, song\, and film music. \nBeginning his meteoric rise to fame as accompanist to Maurice Chevalier\, Legrand went on to be at the forefront of the French new wave\, collaborating with Jean-Luc Godard and Jacques Demy\, with whom he invented a new genre of film music. \n \nLegrand’s association with Ronnie Scott’s went back many years; he frequently appeared at the club with his renowned trio. The Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra’s relationship with Legrand was cemented in 2017 during a four-day residency at Ronnie Scott’s which was an immediate sell-out and received rave reviews. \nLegrand held historic sessions with Miles Davis\, Stan Getz\, Phil Woods and Stéphane Grappelli\, and meetings with the big names in classical music (Kiri Te Kanawa\, Jessye Norman\, Maurice André) and easy listening (Yves Montand\, Barbra Streisand\, Charles Aznavour). His songs were also sung by Frank Sinatra\, Tony Bennett\, Louis Armstrong and Liza Minnelli. \n  \n  \nBook Tickets Here
