Join us on Thursday 27th February at 18:30 at the Ritzy Cinema and Cafe for an evening of discussion\, reflection\, and celebration. \nThis documentary was made by a group of young people working with professional filmmakers. Their goal is to discover the hidden heritage in their communities through hosting intergenerational dialogues with elders in their community. \nThe screening will be followed by a Q&A hosted by Black cultural Archives\, featuring the participants of the project. \nAll donations made will go towards supporting the work of Black Cultural Archives & The World Reimagined.

Set in the matriarchal ocean village of Iyi\, where West African water deity\, Mami Wata\, reigns via village leader Mama Efe it uniquely brings to the screen a story of mythology\, fantasy\, and folklore. When the harmony of the village is threatened\, two sisters must fight to restore order\, as traditions of the past crash with calls from the future. \n\n\n\nThis is the third feature from director C.J. ‘Fiery’ Obasi\, who represents a new wave of Nigerian filmmakers. The film is vividly shot in black-and-white and accompanied by an incredible oceanic soundscape and hypnotic score to frame its fantasy-fable. It centers around the lengths one man is willing to go to for the people he loves\, as a husband is faced with an impossible situation from which to save his family. Through captivating cinematography\, this film brings a unique portrayal of cinema in Somali terms to the screen. It provides a unique opportunity for UK audiences to bear witness to a Somali love story.\n \nThe film is the directorial debut of Finnish-Somali director and writer Khadar Ayderus Ahmed. It premiered during Critics Week at Cannes and made history as Somalia’s first-ever Oscars entry in 2021. It has since been warmly received on the festival circuit\, winning numerous awards\, including the coveted Golden Stallion of Yennenga for Best Film at FESPACO\, the Amplify Voices Award at TIFF\, and an incredible five awards at the 2021 Africa Movie Academy Awards.
