SUMMARY:TRACES
DESCRIPTION:TRACES is the joint title for two solo exhibitions running concurrently at One Paved Court in September. Printmaker Loraine Monk presents a body of work tracing the history of social dissent and protest on the ground floor\, while Rachel Pearcey kicks over the traces with her textile works in the upper gallery. \nLoraine Monk creates images using both relief and etching processes\, using the act of cutting to make tactile\, the visceral anger of inequality and political disengagement. Her family were working-class Londoners; inspired by local and community history\, her background has influenced her politics\, academic research and artistic practice.  She has exhibited in a number of independent galleries\, museums and group shows\, including the International Original Print Exhibition\, the Society of Women Artists\, New English Art Club\, Printmakers Council and Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair. \nRachel Pearcey loves textiles and stitching and drawing and making things.  She stitches drawings and words onto second-hand\, vintage or antique linen\, cotton or flax. She creates unbreakable cups and bowls\, teapots and jugs with felt\, wool and linen. Softened with years of wear\, faded\, repaired and darned each piece she uses bears traces of a previous\, often now redundant\, life. Recycling is very important to her\, as she says “the thread with which I sew is the only thing I buy new”.  Her work was selected for this year’s Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts and has been widely shown across the UK and internationally. \n2-8 September 2024\nOpen daily 12 noon – 6pm\nOne Paved Court\, 1 Paved Court\, Richmond TW9 1LZ

SUMMARY:Seascapes – Solo Exhibition by Liz Gilbert
DESCRIPTION:‘Seascapes’ is a solo exhibition by Liz Gilbert and reflects the significance of time spent by and in water. The works reflect the artist’s life journey in metaphorical expressions informed by childhood memories of time spent on the beach\, a career trajectory taking in theatre\, TV and film\, and the experience of distance ocean swimming. \nGilbert captures a sense of melancholy and nostalgia on paper\, in photography and film. Small sketches created en plein air\, capturing memories of place\, inform drawings\, prints\, and oil paintings\, measuring time not by the hands on a clock but by the turning tide. \n“To work plein air\, one needs to be alert\, seeing intently\, moving pastel and charcoal dust into satisfactory resting places on a surface is a collaboration of seeing – thinking – drawing- touch and breathing with empathy.” \nMeeting the challenge as the wind moves clouds\, light changes\, and rain comes in requires a well-honed skill acquired over many years of experimenting from dawn to dusk. The reward is a sense of freedom akin to that of swimming in open water—a sense of timeless absorption. \nGilbert holds an MA in Fine Art Drawing from Wimbledon School of Art and has consistently exhibited in London and St. Ives\, Cornwall. Her artwork is in collections across the UK\, Europe\, and the USA. \n‘Seascapes ‘is part of a series of exhibitions hosted by White Noise Projects\, a group of emerging and mid-career artists who showcase meticulously chosen artworks through group and solo exhibitions. \nEstablished in 2017 by mixed-media artist Hanna ten Doornkaat and painter Annamarie Dzendrowskyj\, the collective curates exhibitions centred around themes pertinent to contemporary artistic practice and in response to exhibition spaces that surpass the idea of the white cube.

DESCRIPTION:Recollect combines two solo presentations under one roof\, with Anna Bingham and Annamarie Dzendrowskyj sharing the unique exhibition space of a sensitively restored Georgian building. The artists respond to the exposed walls at One Paved Court that hold memories of the building’s past with individual contemplations on our intrinsic connection to our environment. \nAnna Bingham describes her ceramics as holding spaces for memories of place. As they grow and change throughout the making process\, the vessels themselves become metaphors for the interplay of fragility and strength. Whether sketched and planned or spontaneously assembled\, with the plants that inspired them evident or abstracted\, Bingham reflects on the perennial cycle of life both in sculpture and in painting. \nAnnamarie Dzendrowskyj’s practice is centred on capturing fleeting moments between presence and absence. Her current body of work is based on photographs she took in the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area shortly after much of it was destroyed by bushfires\, highlighting both the beauty and precarity of the Australian landscape. SUMMARY:Possible Impossibilities
DESCRIPTION:Possible Impossibilities is a collaborative exhibition by German mixed media artist Hanna ten Doornkaat and Dutch photographer Shiba Huizer. With their artistic styles diverging significantly\, their collaboration illustrates the aphorism ‘opposites attract’. \nThe exhibition echoes Aristotle’s belief in the probability of impossibilities by emphasising their allure\, and by embracing the concept of likely impossibilities over improbable possibilities. \nHanna ten Doornkaat’s recent works are an exploration of unfamiliar territory\, blending the clean process of minimalism with more organic elements. She is interested in the gap between idea and reality. Her aim is to minimise emotional gestures and to reject anonymous perfection in favour of preserving her unique imprint. \nShiba Huizer is an intuitive photographer who uses subcultural references inspired by her family history in 1960s Curaçao to create a new vision of male beauty and Dutch colonial history. \nAs Huizer continues to navigate the dynamic landscape of photography\, her journey is characterised by a dedication to celebrating diversity\, challenging conventions\, and exploring the fluidity of gender and identity through her lens. \nHuizer attended the Rietveld Academie\, Amsterdam\, where she studied art and design but eventually graduated with a degree in photography. She has seven years’ experience teaching photography and digital media at the University of Amsterdam. She has exhibited widely in art galleries throughout the Netherlands\, with assignments ranging from fine art portraits to fashion editorials for a number of magazines. \nIn 2008 she moved to London to study fashion photography at the London College of Fashion (LCF). SUMMARY:Chromatic Journey
DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Talbot’s practise explores the parallel between the gestural energy of the Abstract Expressionist movement and the figural drama of the Baroque and mannerist period of the 15/16th century. She seeks to achieve this through interrupting the spontaneous application of the gesture by isolating it through digital interface and choreographing the composition. Importantly the energy in the gesture is retained but the spontaneity is replaced by a narrative dynamism created through considered choreography. \nWithin the paintings\, in particular of the mannerist period\, are geometric structural elements. These work to create tension and pictorial space in relation to the sensuous figures and fabrics. In her practise Jennifer references the structure by installing the work directly on the wall utilising the architectural aspects of the gallery to define the scale of the work. In some pieces edges of the wall are referenced within the composition to create tension within gestural composition. \nColour in the mannerist paintings was often bizarre\, jewel-like and high-key. Jennifer is seeking to deepen her engagement with this period by codifying the colours and using them as inspiration. DESCRIPTION:With Particle Zoo Sandra Beccarelli blurs the lines between exhibition and artist residency by showing a finished body of work alongside work in progress\, with visitors playing an active role in determining the direction of the latter. \nOver the course of four weeks\, Beccarelli will occupy the gallery’s upper space and provide visitors an opportunity to gain an insight into her creative process. \nBorrowing the title from a physics term used to describe the wide variety of subatomic particles that make up the universe\, her paintings are inspired by notions of change\, impermanence and transformation expressed through a process that allows for boundless possibilities. \nLed by the physicality of painting and the inherent characteristics of materials\, compositions evolve through a process of application and erasure\, hiding and revealing\, often covering both sides of the canvas. \nParticle Zoo is the first in a series of exhibitions hosted by White Noise Projects at One Paved Court.

DESCRIPTION:Spectrum concludes a series of exhibitions presented by White Noise Projects across the two gallery floors of One Paved Court\, a beautifully restored Richmond townhouse. \nFor the final instalment\, the White Noise team has partnered with Matthew Burrows to expand the generous principles of the Artist Support Pledge scheme into a physical space. The eleven artists who have participated in the gallery takeover since May will be joined by almost fifty contemporaries to fill the gallery with affordable works of art ranging from photography and painting to ceramics and small sculptures. \nWith submissions from across the country and styles ranging from monochrome abstracts to photorealistic drawings and everything in between\, the exhibition reflects the broad range of creative output from established and lesser-known artists currently working in London and beyond. With some works inspired by nature\, others resulting from discarded objects\, and decorative objects displayed alongside works with more serious undertones\, Spectrum brings a kaleidoscopic and fun mini-art-fair experience to the suburbs. \nWith artists pledging to re-invest a proportion of their sales in art\, visitors are invited to enter the circle of generosity by picking up a fine art bargain. The works selected for Spectrum will be available exclusively from the gallery for the show’s duration.
