SUMMARY:100 FLOWERS + THE YUMMY FUR
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n100 FLOWERS\nTHE YUMMY FUR\nFriday 31 October\nNew River Studios\, 199 Eade Rd\, Harringay\, London\, N4 1DN\n7.30pm | £10 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/teff2cfdc2f2 \n100 FLOWERS are a post-punk band from Los Angeles\, California\, active primarily in the early 1980s. The group evolved from the politically charged punk outfit The Urinals\, who were known for their raw\, minimalist sound and radical brevity\, many of their songs clocked in under a minute. As their musical interests expanded and matured\, the trio mutated into 100 Flowers in 1981\, taking their name from Mao Zedong’s “Hundred Flowers Campaign\,” a brief period in Chinese history encouraging open expression. The new moniker reflected their increasingly sophisticated and experimental approach to music\, while maintaining a subversive\, critical edge. \nThe band consisted of the same core lineup from the Urinals: John Talley-Jones (vocals\, bass)\, Kjehl Johansen (guitar\, vocals)\, and Kevin Barrett (drums). Under the 100 Flowers name\, they moved beyond the stark minimalism of their previous incarnation\, embracing more complex song structures\, abstract lyrics\, and an eclectic mix of influences ranging from Wire and Gang of Four to Captain Beefheart and Pere Ubu. Their sound retained punk’s urgency and DIY ethos but integrated funk\, avant-garde noise\, and jarring time signatures\, all hallmarks of the emerging post-punk genre. In 1983\, 100 Flowers released their self-titled LP on the independent label Happy Squid Records\, which they co-founded. The album was critically well-regarded within underground circles\, praised for its angular guitar work\, sharp lyrical content\, and inventive rhythms. Songs like “Sensible Virgins” and “Motorboat to Hell” showcased their unique fusion of intelligence\, irony\, and punk rebellion. The group disbanded in 1983\, but their influence endured. Both 100 Flowers and the Urinals became cult favorites\, especially among later generations of punk\, indie rock\, and lo-fi musicians. Their music was rediscovered and reissued over the years\, including a retrospective compilation\, 100 Years of Pulchritude\, which brought renewed attention to their groundbreaking work. \nhttps://100flowers.bandcamp.com/album/100-flowers \nTHE YUMMY FUR are Glaswegian DIY pop legends with their energetic mix of angular riffs\, super-short songs and biting social commentary. Consisting of lead singer and guitarist John McKeown and an interesting line-up of other musicians\, the band were favourites of John Peel and recorded two Peel Sessions\, as well three totemic albums: ‘Night Club’ (Slampt / Guided Missile\, 1996)\, ‘Male Shadow at Three O’Clock’ (Vesuvius\, 1998) and ‘Sexy World’ (Guided Missile\, 1998). All three are essential. The group disbanded in 1999\, and ten years later ‘Rock Action’ released ‘Piggy Wings’\, a compilation of their best 7” and album tracks. The band have since reformed to play with a line up featuring original members John McKeown\, Paul Thomson and Brian McDougall. \nhttps://theyummyfur.bandcamp.com/album/piggy-wings

SUMMARY:EVIL SWORD + SHAKE CHAIN + SPLIT APEX
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nEVIL SWORD\nSHAKE CHAIN\nSPLIT APEX\nSaturday 5 April\nNew River Studios\, 199 Eade Rd\, Harringay\, London\, N4 1DN\n7.30pm | £8 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/B1970de44fb0 \nEVIL SWORD are Kate Ferencz and Ben Furgal from Philadelphia\, USA. Their chaotic live shows combine elements of noise\, cryptic metal overtones\, performance art\, and gallows humor and feature macabre props\, flashing lights\, stage sets and costumes. There are hardly any instruments in this group\, but they make such a racket you’d never know it. The bass and the percussion sound like they’re having a great time\, telling each other jokes. Then the words come in and it all locks together in these strange\, hypnotic rhythms. I just listen to the stories and laugh and cry and get scared and wonder what they were ever thinking.\nRecent album ‘Basket Fever’ (Magic Pictures\, 2023) features electrocuted bells\, backwards parts\, rusty horns; I’m pretty sure I even heard a clarinet in there somewhere. There’s this one part where it all seems to come back around\, where they took some gang vocals from the very first demo they ever recorded and slowed it way down. When they first started; I thought they were some goofy kids making music about the end of the world\, back when that seemed a little further away\, like it was going to be fun. They were all laughing and making these funny ghost sounds\, but now everyone’s older and the ghosts are real\, a great whoosh of bygone spirits and cold air. It’s bone chilling. There’s plenty to be upset about\, but it’s not really an Evil Sword song until that grimace has been twisted up into a smile. \nhttps://evilsword.bandcamp.com/album/basket-fever \nSHAKE CHAIN have been busy demolishing audiences and expectations for the best part of the last five years. Vocalist Kate Mahony sets that standard by anything from crawling through the audience’s legs in a bright yellow raincoat to crying and washing her hands in a nearby toilet\, as the rest of the band start the set. The four-piece from London are completed by Robert Eyres (Synth/Guitar)\, Chris Hopkins (Bass/Synth/Samples) and Joe Fergey (Drums). Shake Chain are built of nervy bass lines\, twitchy guitars that jolt and jerk and tack sharp drums\, overridden by screeching vocal slurs and sampled television. Kate’s singing is a unique embrace of flights of atonal fancy\, head-first repetition and ecstatic frenzy. Opinion-dividing arguably\, but singular in making Shake Chain dauntingly brilliant. The band’s debut album ’Snake Chain’ was released by Upset The Rhythm. \nhttps://upsettherhythm.bandcamp.com/album/snake-chain \nSPLIT APEX are Jussi Palmusaari (guitar\, electronics and percussion) and Peter Blundell (voice and bass). On their self-titled cassette (out now) release they combine restless sonic textures\, oddball phrasing within barely-contained song structures held together by moth-woven threads. Seemingly governed by an unknowable gravitational pull that tugs hither and yon\, the duo lays out their statement of intent through a brief suite of intimate nocturnes. The release marks the first work for Palmusaari since leaving his native Finland where he played with the band\, Preesens\, in the late-90s/early-00s. For Blundell\, this new project exists adjacent to his current work with Dominic Goodman as Komare and previous endeavours in the band\, Mosquitoes. \nhttps://tinyurl.com/n8cf2jhf \n

SUMMARY:DEAN SPUNT + GUESTS + M-G DYSFUNCTION
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nDEAN SPUNT\nGUESTS\nM-G DYSFUNCTION\nTuesday 12 November\nNew River Studios\, 199 Eade Rd\, Harringay\, London\, N4 1DN\n7.30pm | £10 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/E8acfa797c7d \nDEAN SPUNT’s new album for Drag City is titled ‘Basic Editions’ (out Sept 27th). It’s an excursion in electronic sound that unpacks his fascination with language – in this case\, the syntax of systems and processes. By turns meditative\, compulsive and consumptive\, Basic Editions distills a 64 voice module through a headfull of ideas – somewhat like pouring a cornucopia of possible ambient moods and EZ listening impulses backwards through a funnel\, inspiring a deceptively absurd rainbow of soul to spray out the other end.

With this new release\, Dean identifies his process as “using sounds\, rather than making sounds”. This approach to music-making is a train of thought that’s been rolling out from the far horizon of the past for ages now – but for Dean\, whose previous works within and without No Age depended on their making of sounds\, it’s a fresh work stance. Given\, however\, No Age’s traditional further manipulation of their own sounds (via loops and treatments)\, Basic Editions delivers further unexpected hard-rights and lefts in the non-aesthetic aesthetic that has defined Dean’s path over the past two decades. Steering toward wacked digital soundscapes that bounce colourfully across the stereo azimuth\, Dean creates a kind of post-ambient neo-exotica that hinges upon a giddy conflation of cosmic and comic. \nhttps://deanspunt.bandcamp.com/music \nGUESTS are Jessica Higgins and Matthew Walkerdine of Glasgow\, UK\, both formerly of the bands Vital Idles and Mordwaffe. They have been closely tied with DIY music\, art and publishing for over a decade. Using (amateur) electronics\, singing\, speaking and field recording they make songs which blend the rhythms of popular music and contemporary approaches to collage\, sampling\, improvisation and repetition. As inspired by film and art as they are the legacies of twee underground and avant garde experimentalism\, their loose\, domestically twinged compositions explore feelings\, atmospheres and moments which are hard to articulate and the quite literal notion of being a “guest”. “I wish I was special” is their debut record on World Of Echo and has drawn some comparison with the private musings of Flaming Tunes\, Idea Fire Company’s domestic electronics\, or perhaps even Annea Lockwood’s framing of emotional connection within avant garde structures.\nhttps://by-guests.bandcamp.com/album/i-wish-i-was-special \nM-G DYSFUNCTION is the music and art project of Fred M-G. M-G Dysfunction has previously shared the stage with acts such as The Bug\, Marie Davidson\, Caroline\, Gnod\, Divide & Dissolve and Meatraffle. M-G Dysfunction live shows combine musical influences from the likes of Dean Blunt and Death Grips with elements of stand-up comedy and clowning. Most recent single ‘Junglists Only’ came out in August 2024. The third M-G Dysfunction full-length ‘Mista Self-Isolation’ will be released before the end of the year. \nhttps://mgdysfunction.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:TYVEK + GEO + VIRVON VARVON
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nTYVEK\nGEO\nVIRVON VARVON\nWednesday 30 October\nNew River Studios\, 199 Eade Rd\, Harringay\, London\, N4 1DN\n7.30pm | £12 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/G309daf25a4e \nTYVEK has remained a singular force. The Detroit group formed somewhere in the mid-aughts by songwriter\, vocalist\, guitarist\, and sole consistent band member Kevin Boyer\, who enlisted various friends to cultivate a raw\, rudimentary punk sound that manages to get back to basics while at the same time presenting abstract perspectives and weird concepts not normally explored by your everyday garage band. There have been mutations over the years as the band toured regularly and released a run of solid albums with labels like Siltbreeze and In The Red\, but with every reformation\, Tyvek still didn’t sound quite like anyone else. Their new album\, the self-released Overground (Ginkgo\, 2023)\, stays true to their reputation for delivering hit after hit of blistering punk and remains tightly wound until it unspools into the dreamlike title track\, an extended post-Velvets plea for human decency. Tyvek’s current line-up of all-stars guarantees an intense live show: Shelley Salant (Shells\, XV)\, Alex Glendening (Deadbeat Beat)\, Fred Thomas (Idle Ray)\, and Emily Roll (XV) channel the high-energy rock’n’roll of Detroit’s past while side-stepping the cliches to push forward into an uncharted future.\nhttps://tyvek.bandcamp.com/ \nGEO are a no wave oddity from The Netherlands\, the more mismatched the moving parts appear\, the more their music starts to make sense. Since the Groningen quartet’s inception in 2019\, they have built a framework of skeletal agit-funk\, cartoonish chromatics and neoteric art punk vignettes – sketching negative spaces where chaos and cacophony can sound perplexingly catchy. ‘Out of Body’ – Geo’s long-awaited debut album was released on Erste Theke Tontraeger in April. Geo’s jitterbug\, birdbrained post-punk spiels are in the spirit of gung-ho deconstructionists like The Contortionists\, The Fall and Gang of Four. On ‘Out of Body’\, they play emotions out against each other like some kind of absurdist Punch and Judy show.\nhttps://geoband.bandcamp.com/ \nVIRVON VARVON are part-time punks from London\, featuring Black Time\, Midnight Mines and The Jazz June members. They’ve played Gonerfest in Memphis and Get Lost Festival in Hamburg and released an LP and two tapes on Girlsville Records.\nhttps://girlsville.bandcamp.com/album/virvon-varvon-four-bars-of-hate-2

SUMMARY:Screensaver + The Rebel + Jade Hairpins
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nSCREENSAVER\nTHE REBEL\nJADE HAIRPINS\nSaturday 24 August\nNew River Studios\, 199 Eade Rd\, Harringay\, London\, N4 1DN\n7.30pm | £10 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Re3674c6d206 \nSCREENSAVER are finally making their way to Europe and the UK this August. The Melbourne synth-punks blend the dark and moody elements of post-punk and new wave with synth sounds both caustic and cosmic to create a sound that is tense\, direct\, and often undeniably danceable. Their sophomore album ‘Decent Shapes’ was released late 2023 on Upset The Rhythm to critical acclaim\, with praise from the likes of Rolling Stone\, Post-Trash and Maximum Rock’n’Roll. ‘Decent Shapes’ is loaded with bubbling tension\, a low grade but growing fever\, a rising rage. The frustration is so tangible you can taste it. Detachment and dissociation become survivalist coping mechanisms. With extensive US and Aussie tours already under their belt\, the band are excited to make it to the UK and EU for the very first time.\nhttps://screensaver.bandcamp.com/ \nTHE REBEL was born Benedict Roger Wallers in 1971. Since 1989 BR Wallers has recorded & hand-distributed a bewildering array of impossibly hard-to-find home-made cassette-albums\, under a variety of guises. Wallers is a charismatic lone wolf in a cowboy hat and a tie whose electrified howls are too idiosyncratic to be broken down into market-oriented terms. It is difficult to sketch a thumbnail summary of a musician who has amassed a vast and unwieldy discography under a variety of names and genres: the most widely acclaimed is probably the Country Teasers\, but he also moonlights as the Company\, the Male Nurse\, the Beale\, the Stallion\, the Black Poodle and Skills on Ampex\, across folk\, country\, garage\, post-punk\, no wave and electronic pop. In the main part The Rebel is centred around twisted Casio drones\, clanging guitar and some defiantly deadpan vocals\, all thrown in the pan and pressure-cooked in Wallers’ mind. Wallers has amassed a near-unquantifiable discography over the past 30 years\, from scores of more or less “official” LPs\, EPs and 7”s to seemingly endless self-released cassettes.\nhttps://the-rebel.bandcamp.com/ \nJADE HAIRPINS is the pop-indie project of Mike Haliechuk and Jonah Falco of Fucked Up. Their debut LP\, “Harmony Avenue” (Merge Records)\, is a whirlwind touch of fizzing synths\, Talking Heads-Esque guitar interplay set to long melodic vocals and dancey drums. The band live the added strengths of Tamsin M. Leach (Es) and Jack Goldstein\, bringing the songs to life. Check out the group’s new single “Unreliable\,” a punched-up\, baggy\, pop-kissed barb of post-post-punk that is\, according to the Hairpins’ frontman Jonah Falco\, “about living up to the ideals and expectations of an ever changing brain\, will\, body\, and world.”\nhttps://jadehairpins.bandcamp.com/ \n

SUMMARY:KILYNN LUNSFORD + THE REBEL + THE PHEROMOANS
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nKILYNN LUNSFORD\nTHE REBEL\nTHE PHEROMOANS\nWednesday 3 July\nNew River Studios\, 199 Eade Rd\, Harringay\, London\, N4 1DN\n7.30pm | £9 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/qf75cce9e3be \nKILYNN LUNSFORD had been conceiving her first solo album since she was a young teen. Growing up in Philadelphia through the MTV era of Missy Elliot\, Timbaland and the Swing Mob collective\, and drawn towards its “sometimes ridiculous\, but overloaded” qualities\, she found herself returning to that state of emerging adulthood when the moment for a solo record finally arose. ‘Custodians of Human Succession’\, released on Ever Never Records\, straddles unclear boundaries between electro-pop\, post-punk and the avant-garde; it delves into those liminal spaces between pop culture and experimentalism\, between city and country\, between verse and chorus. \nWritten over four years\, drafted during long car rides from work\, hewn out first thing in the morning or last thing at night ‘Custodians’…is Lunsford’s first work since the dissolution of her former project\, noise-punk outfit Taiwan Housing Project in 2021. The album itself operates like a collage\, splintered and warped\, each song in imprinting its own shape and colour to fashion a finished whole. Industrial-edged electro-pop a la Chris and Cosey sits shoulder to shoulder with twangling new wave rock ‘n’ roll ironies. Lunsford’s caustic lyrics embellish this further\, packed as they are with a potent blood-stream of unflinching surrealism and discomfiting satire. Impacted by her experiences as Healthcare Union Organiser working through a pandemic\, and as a sufferer of an autoimmune disorder with no healthcare coverage\, a festering anger boils at the album’s core. Little wonder how\, from all this\, comes a record of commensurate disturbance\, and brilliant intrigue.\nhttps://evernever-records.bandcamp.com/album/custodians-of-human-succession \nTHE REBEL was born Benedict Roger Wallers in 1971. In the main part The Rebel is centred around twisted Casio drones\, clanging guitar and some defiantly deadpan vocals\, all thrown in the pan and pressure-cooked in Wallers’ mind. Wallers has amassed a near-unquantifiable discography over the past 30 years\, from scores of more or less “official” LPs\, EPs and 7”s to seemingly endless self-released cassettes.\nhttps://the-rebel.bandcamp.com/ \nTHE PHEROMOANS are tenants of an unruly domain. Over the last 18 years the group have evolved from garage rock primitivists to auteurs of their own curious sound; a frothy brew of loose electronics\, refractory rock and humdrum musing. Their songs are mutable\, capricious\, unreliable narrations\, often withholding as much as they reveal. Russell Walker’s understated vocal has always been the band’s unifying focus\, it is wry\, unsparing and wilfully honest. Walker’s lyrics are an observational tour de force\, sometimes droll\, yet often tipping over into unlikely pathos. With previous releases on Upset The Rhythm\, Convulsive and Alter\, 2024 will witness The Pheromoans return with lucky album number 13\, entitled ‘Wyrd Psearch’ (out now 1st on Upset The Rhythm). With The Pheromoans there is always a familiarity at play\, only broken and reassembled\, like a bygone sitcom gone rogue in your memory. This contributes to the group’s peculiarly British outsider perspective\, one that shouts from the sidelines\, but never goes unnoticed.\nhttps://upsettherhythm.bandcamp.com/album/wyrd-psearch

SUMMARY:THE SMASHING TIMES + JOWE HEAD + SILK CUTS
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nTHE SMASHING TIMESJOWE HEADSILK CUTSThursday 28 SeptemberNew River Studios\, 199 Eade Rd\, Harringay\, London\, N4 1DN7.30pm | £8 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/i167d908f749 \n\n\n\nTHE SMASHING TIMES are a psychedelic twee freakbeat group from a Baltimore basement. Instruments played by humans\, bare feet touching the ground. Wrinkled button-downs\, sweaters filled with holes\, music audibly and sometimes visibly made by humans. Can you change the strings on your guitar? Maybe\, can you buy me dinner? Lock up your Rickenbackers\, and Thee Jasmine Monk is coming to town. Can they stay on your couch? Recent album ‘Bloom’ was released by Meritorio Records\, featuring fractious\, chiming riffs and Dan Treacy meets Stephen Pastel style vocals and an impressive collection of genuinely memorable tracks. The Smashing Times’ new album will be coming out on K Records soon.https://thesmashingtimes.bandcamp.com \n\n\n\nJOWE HEAD is a musician and artist from the Midlands of England\, now living in Hackney\, in east London. He started his musical career in his home town of Solihull with various school friends in 1972\, a project that came to be known as Swell Maps. This group emerged in the late 1970s and is now known as pioneers of what is now referred to as the Alternative Rock or Post-Punk scene. They set up their own independent record label and mixed Punk Rock with experimental and psychedelic sounds. Swell Maps released four singles and two albums in a brief but dramatic career that led to them topping the UK independent charts and influencing bands such as Sonic Youth\, Nirvana\, and Blur. When they broke up\, Jowe joined Television Personalities. Ten years with the TVPs saw Jowe making more influential records\, touring Europe regularly\, and playing in Japan and the USA. For this show\, Jowe is presenting his new trio\, the Infernal Trinity.https://jowe-head.com/bio \n\n\n\nSILK CUTS are Exeter’s newest C86-influenced indie pop band. Silk Cuts have a new 7″ on Freakscene Records (The Computers\, The Cut Ups\, Spy Versus Spy). SUMMARY:WATER MACHINE + LASH + GROSS MISCONDUCT
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nWATER MACHINE\nLASH\nGROSS MISCONDUCT\nTuesday 5 September\nNew River Studios\, 199 Eade Rd\, Harringay\, London\, N4 1DN\n7.30pm | £7 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Lf7063042bcf \nWATER MACHINE is an office romance between Hando Morice (they/them)\, Flore de Hoog (she/her)\, Jimmy Gage (he/him) and Goda Ilgauskaitė (she/her). An unassuming supergroup formed out of Glasgow institutions including Goth GF\, Passion Pusher\, Brenda and Soursob\, their sound careens between punk\, country and alt-rock underpinned by the unique quality they call “Raw Liquid Power”. Following last year’s self-titled demo tape on Gold Mold Records\, the four-piece will release their highly-anticipated first studio effort ‘Raw Liquid Power’ on Upset The Rhythm on August 4th. \nThe EP opens with a menacing\, modulating synth melody. Gage’s guitar enters with a mighty bend before breaking into the chugging rhythm of ‘Water Machine Pt. 2’. This timely reminder to refill your water bottle – “don’t be late\, hydrate!” less a wellness mantra than a threat – builds to a spacey outro with flashes of the art-punk weirdness of Suburban Lawns. ‘Stilettos’ marches on indignantly with a spiky riff punctuated by Ilgauskaitė’s cowbells. Staccato talk-singing tells a playful tale of stray cats following you home\, but belies a darker subtext as the breakdown gives way to paranoid duelling guitars evoking The Fire Engines. \nhttps://upsettherhythm.bandcamp.com/album/raw-liquid-power \nLASH are a new group featuring members of Es\, Suep\, Findom & Sealings. New Wave with a psychodynamic edge; Neuro-Romantic if you will. Think Pylon\, AC Marias\, Pink Industry style lamented & mutated pop music. \nGROSS MISCONDUCT are a conceptually foggy\, bureaucratically sound landfill punk band from South London. Featuring members of Killjoys\, MILKY\, Strong Arm and Surplus. FFO Exit Order\, The Cribs\, Be Your Own Pet and corporate telephone hold music. Fresh off probation\, mandatory training completed and ready for synergy. Check out their new EP and demo now!\nhttps://grossmisconduct69.bandcamp.com

Nu metal bass riffs\, switch-pitched fuzz vocals and big drums layer up with unsettling narratives and extreme loops to bring a bit of the pit to the dancefloor. Donna Candy’s first album ‘Blooming’ will be released this spring on bison. This tour will be the first time Donna Candy plays in the UK.https://donnacandy.bandcamp.com/album/donna-candy \n\n\n\nHISTORICALLY FUCKED are fresh from the release of their new LP ‘The Mule Peasants’ Revolt of 12\,067’ on Upset The Rhythm. This four-way fandango is back with a new musical game of “badger in the bag”\, building songs as quickly as they can and then chewing them up again just as quickly. Historically Fucked contains four people\, who each share the same duties\, and whose names in sequence are Otto Willberg\, David Birchall\, Greta Buitkuté and Alecs Pierce. Guitar\, bass\, drums and voices keenly jostle amid the group’s frenzy of spontaneous rock throttles.https://upsettherhythm.co.uk/historicallyfucked.shtml

SUMMARY:LIIEK + MILTOWN + BADABOUM
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nLIIEKMILTOWNBADABOUMThursday 20 OctoberNew River Studios\, 199 Eade Rd\, Harringay\, London\, N4 1DN7.30pm | £7.00 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Xc2f14f7e2f0 \n\n\n\nLIIEK is an austere and choppy post-punk trio from Berlin playing bass-driven songs like Gang Of Four\, Pylon and Delta 5. The songs may coalesce around the funk-and-dub-informed low-end\, however\, these grooves contrast with angular guitar lines and shouted\, staccato vocals\, both of which remind us of early Devo. Their latest album ‘Deep Pore’ came out earlier this year on Adagio830. Think Q And Not U meets Wire featuring members of Peeps of Pigeon\, Ostseetraum\, Aus etc.https://liiek.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nMILTOWN comes out of the buzzing underground of Denmark’s “little brother” city\, Aarhus.Inspired by the never-ending stream of bands from Melbourne and oddballs from the American Midwest\, Miltown plays garage punk that is both abrasive\, aggressive\, catchy and accessible simultaneously. Their live performances are captivating and chaotic\, a rare display of anger and frailty that leaves you puzzled\, thrilled and anxious to start a band of your own. This fall sees the band embark on their first European tour following the release of their first single ‘Respect for Authorities’.https://miltownband.bandcamp.com/releases \n\n\n\nBADABOUM are a french all-star girl group that includes Krine (Headwar)\, Armelle (The Dreams) and Solene (Dudu geva) and is affiliated with the famous Grande Triple Alliance de l’Est posse (Ah Kraken\, Feeling of love\, Scorpion Violente). They play a form of post-punk music akin to Liliput/Kleenex and Malaria\, adding their own reverbed idiosyncracies and eerie organ lines\, chanting in indecipherable Italian\, mock german and plain french. Taking turns on drums and blowing through severed reeds\, Badaboum will bring you as much joy as chaos and spookiness.https://bancampbadaboum.bandcamp.com

SUMMARY:Savage Mansion + Romeo Taylor + The Tubs - Live Music
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents: \nSAVAGE MANSION \n \nROMEO TAYLOR\nTHE TUBS\nFriday 22 April\nNew River Studios\, 199 Eade Rd\, Harringay\, London\, N4 1DN\n7.30pm | £7 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Ee5af990c5b9 \nSAVAGE MANSION is a vehicle for the songs of Perth-raised singer and guitarist Craig Angus\, elsewhere featuring a revolving cast of musicians including Andrew Macpherson and Jamie Dubber (Catholic Action)\, Lewis Orr (Martha Ffion\, Space Rocket Garage Band) and Beth Chalmers (Martha Ffion\, Molly Linen). Quickly drawing attention for a high-energy live show and Craig’s melodic and eloquent guitar rock slices\, the band was invited to open for Frightened Rabbit at Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom. They drew the attention of Johnny Lynch (Pictish Trail)\, who offered to release the ‘Do You Say Hello To Your Neighbours?’ single on Lost Map. This February\, Savage Mansion release their new album ‘Golden Mountain\, Here I Come’\, solidifying their reputation as one of the UK’s most prolific emerging guitar bands and as a hardworking collective drawing from a diverse palette of musical\, literary influences. Re-emerging as a five-piece\, they’re back with a hook-laden\, poignant\, and cryptic record. It’s indie rock that’s an instant feast for the senses and a rich tapestry of sounds and words to pore over and savour.\nhttps://savagemansion.bandcamp.com/ \nROMEO TAYLOR is a cross-platform entertainer and all-around good guy\, a cherished personality on the DIY Glasgow music scene\, and a hilarious presence on Twitch\, YouTube & the Twitter-sphere. Romeo is the natural meeting point between Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark\, Gary Rhodes and World Wrestling Entertainment’s beloved ‘Attitude Era’\, making a mockery of the idea that everything’s been done before in music\, and we’re just repeating ourselves. The Coatbridge native is making quite a name for himself with a spectacular live show demonstrating his accomplished songcraft and comedic sensibilities. Look out for his music on Lost Map and Acid Waxa!\n \nTHE TUBS were formed in 2019 by Owen Williams and George Nicholls\, formerly of much-loved Welsh pop band Joanna Gruesome. The two hunkered down in rural North Wales to expand on the fuzzy\, hook-laden sounds they propagated in their former outfit\, this time incorporating elements of post-punk\, traditional British folk\, and guitar jangle seasoned by nonchalant Cleaners From Venus-influenced pop hooks & contemporary antipodean indie bands (Twerps/Goon Sax et al). After a few lineup shuffles\, they recruited Max Warren (bass)\, Steve Stonholdt (guitar) and Matthew Green (drums) to solidify the current lineup. Trouble In Mind co-released their newest effort worldwide\, the ‘Names’ 7-inch EP\, alongside Prefect Records in the UK.\nhttps://thetubs.bandcamp.com

SUMMARY:Old Time Relijun + Order Of The Toad - Live Concert in London
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents \nOLD TIME RELIJUN\nORDER OF THE TOAD \nOLD TIME RELIJUN are the rarest breed of band. Insatiable\, living raw\, always on the margins and consistent as hell. You know what to expect and yet never have any clue what’s going to come next. Old Time Relijun give sweaty\, compulsively danceable performances that never fail to inflame their audience. Their loose swagger belies years of practice\, meticulous arrangements and gut-level understanding of how music hits you. Old Time Relijun was born on January 1st\, 1995\, in a dark and mouldy basement in Olympia\, Washington. The band stole some popcorn bags\, talked a friend out of his inheritance and self-released “Songbook Vol. I” in 1997. They then began their long association with Calvin Johnson’s K Records. Between 1999 and 2007\, Old Time Relijun toured like monsters\, averaging 150 shows a year in the U.S. and Europe\, releasing ‘Uterus and Fire’\, ‘La Sirena De Pecera’\, ‘Witchcraft Rebellion’\, ‘Lost Light’\, ‘2012’ and ‘Catharsis in Crisis’. The last three albums are known collectively as “The Lost Light Trilogy\,” a conceptual triptych integrating poetry\, painting\, and myth through multiple lyrical and musical threads. The band toured through 2008 and then quietly parted ways.  2021 reunites Old Time Relijun with a newfound level of passionate indignation and a deeper musical vocabulary. The classic lineup featuring bandleader Arrington de Dionyso and Aaron Hartman (upright bass)\, joined by drummer Amanda Spring is primed to return to Europe. Old Time Relijun continue to make music for the revolution from restless energy that has never settled down.\nhttps://oldtimerelijun.bandcamp.com/ \n \nORDER OF THE TOAD is a trio from Glasgow. Melodically\, Order of the Toad has something of a medieval fixation\, filtered through late 60s influences which end up sounding something like Jefferson Airplane – not least in vocalist Gemma “The Wharves” Fleet’s powerful lung-force – mixed with British psyche heat. Think Kaleidoscope or even Syd Barrett drug-damaged whimsy. There’s no other band doing this in the U.K. that we know of\, a musically rich tapestry woven from strands outside current trends. SUMMARY:Nightshift + The Pheromoans - Live Indie & Punk Concert
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents NIGHTSHIFT + THE PHEROMOANS – Live Indie & Punk Concert \nNIGHTSHIFT formed in 2019 in the ecosystem of Glasgow’s current indie scene. The city’s fertile & creative group of musicians have been committed to pushing the boundaries of and blurring the lines between DIY\, punk\, experimentalism and indie pop for decades now. So nightshift fit right in\, featuring members from current indie stalwarts Spinning Coin\, 2 Ply and Robert Sotelo. The band was formed by David Campbell (guitar)\, Andrew Doig (bass)\, Eothen Stearn (keyboards/vocals) & Chris White (drums) as a “No Wave/No New York/early Sonic Youth/This Heat-esque” group. Still\, their sound quickly evolved once guitarist/vocalist/clarinettist Georgia Harris joined (as the band was writing ‘Zöe’). Nightshift self-released a full-length cassette on CUSP Recordings in early 2020\, laying the foundation of their sound; hypnotic\, melodic\, understated indie post-punk with hooks that stick around long after you’ve heard them. \nUnlike the band’s previous album\, the songs on ‘Zöe’ weren’t conceived live in the band’s practice space but instead pieced together and recorded remotely during quarantine lockdown. The isolation allowed openness and creativity to flow\, and many of the songs took on radically different forms from when they were initially envisioned. Vocalist & primary lyricist Eothen Stearn says\, “The process of writing these songs separately during lockdown was a kind of exquisite corpse – I liked this gesture of reaching out to one another and responding. Building up the next layer and passing it on.” Stearn says “poetic restraints” to writing & Eno & Schmidt’s Oblique Strategies concepts were on their mind when composing the words to the songs\, and highlights the influence of author Rosi Bradiotti’s book ‘The Posthuman’. ‘Zöe’ kicks off with ‘Piece Together’\, a mesmeric song anchored by the band’s chanted vocals and serpentine guitar licks. ‘Spraypaint the Bridge’ showcases Harris’ clarinet in an unexpected & delightful melodic shift during the song’s anti-chorus. Elsewhere tunes like the swooning ‘Infinity Winner’ and ‘Outta Space’s minimalist\, slinky rhythm swirl in a late-night vibe\, while ‘Make Kin’ ruminates on “Looking to kinship as a way of engaging with entangled environmental and reproductive issues… how a band is a bond” and lurches forward with kinetic guitar strangling & staccato rhythmic percussion from White & Doig. ‘Power Cut’ is the album’s centrepiece\, luring the listener into involuntary movement with its waves of harmonies\, synth drones and metronomic pulse until they all come crashing down in the song’s dissonant midsection.

The band acknowledges the whiffs of nostalgia prevalent in ‘Zöe’s songs\, and the nature of writing & recording the album is soaked in the self-work\, reflection & reevaluations involved not only personally but creatively in each member’s life. Consequently\, ‘Zöe’ has become a collection of sketches of hope\, growth\, awareness of the world’s power & the power of self and possibility.\nhttps://nightshiftgroup.bandcamp.com/ \nTHE PHEROMOANS are a rock band from the South East of England who deals in a piece of deadpan DIY music. Married to the mundane yet surreal reportage of our lives\, their music manages to address the truly restless boredom and absurdity of everyday life. The group have released albums on Alter\, Upset The Rhythm and Savoury Days. They would like this review from 2014 by Peter Rea to best sum up their sound. “Akin to The Fall\, someone who clearly wants to be Mark E. Smith fronts a band of great-sounding musicians. Using his microphone stand to remain upright\, the lead singer slurs words with little coherence\, occasionally managing to fit in nicely with his exceptional band members – possibly by accident. He mentions Jerry McGuire\, swears a lot loudly\, and then keeps saying “David Lynch”. It’s an amusing spectacle\, but I’d like to hear someone more sober and poetic. The second to last tune is actually pretty great\, which goes some way to make up for some cringeworthy and laughable moments.”\nhttp://thepheromoans.blogspot.com/ \n  \nNIGHTSHIFT\nTHE PHEROMOANS\nFriday 29 October\nNew River Studios\, 199 Eade Rd\, Harringay\, London\, N4 1DN\n7.30pm | £7 | https://link.dice.fm/ZGB7YNg89gb
