SUMMARY:FREAK OUT! at VAULT Festival 2023
DESCRIPTION:This town is falling apart. \n\n\n\nWelcome to Portsford\, a seaside town fighting a losing battle with coastal erosion. When a sudden announcement threatens to tear the community apart in an attempt to raise spirits\, everyone comes together for a night of drinking and dancing. But as the party becomes a pressure cooker\, difficult conversations surrounding the shared loss of home and collective and individual responsibility rise to the surface. But wouldn’t you rather just dance the night away? \n\n\n\nAfter a successful debut at Bristol Old Vic in July 2022\, Coin Toss Collective are bringing their show FREAK OUT! to VAULT Festival 2023. Devised and performed by the company\, the show is inspired by the UK’s disappearing coastline as a result of coastal erosion\, accelerated by climate change\, and draws from research on affected communities in East Anglia.  \n\n\n\n“A surreal and devastating celebration of loss”\, FREAK OUT! experiments with theatrical styles and genres\, blending human stories with live art elements into an offbeat\, high-energy cocktail of a show. Enjoy it while it lasts because things are about to get messy… literally.

SUMMARY:VAULT Festival: Someone of Significance
DESCRIPTION:What happens when two people meet who have nothing in common but their love for one another? \n\n\n\nSomeone of Significance is a new play that will premiere at the 2023 Vault Festival. It follows the relationship of Rosie\, a prominent leftwing politician\, and Brad\, the CEO of a multinational corporation\, exploring the beliefs and structural barriers that keep us apart and the irresistible need for connection that brings us together. \n\n\n\nThe play was developed as part of the Young Vic’s Neighbourhood Voices Programme and is based on a short play by the same name that was performed by Chelsea Rep and The Acting Studio in New York.

SUMMARY:LALI
DESCRIPTION:When Lali goes to a job interview to tutor the children of the affluent Bamford family\, things take an unexpected turn. \n\n\n\nAfter falling asleep in a wendy house in the family’s garden\, she refuses to leave\, preferring the insular\, pretend realm of the house over the grief that awaits her in the real world. Over the course of a week\, the Bamfords are forced to look at themselves anew through the gaze of this new intruder\, and Lali\, too\, must come to face what she has refused to acknowledge.

SUMMARY:Compositor E
DESCRIPTION:It is 1623\, and 17-year old John has come to London to work as an apprentice typesetter\, under the mentorship of printer Isaac Jaggard. But while he’s desperate to develop his craft\, it’s becoming apparent that John is suffering from some kind of trauma. And with a potentially game-changing new commission on his hands\, Isaac does not have time for emotions. \nHaving persuaded Isaac to let him progress to setting from a confusing manuscript of ‘Macbeth’\, John’s trauma begins to spill out onto the print shop floor. Why were those men so scared of his mother? And why are these children scurrying around with sheets of drying ink called… ‘devils’? \nA play about the hidden fingerprints of history – produced in conjunction with the 400th anniversary of the publication of the First Folio – that asks who the storytellers really are.

SUMMARY:Grey Area
DESCRIPTION:Where does the line between self-care and egotism lie in relationships? An intimate semi-autobiographical performance highlighting the effects of unaddressed mental health in relationships\, told through the lens of deconstructed\, fragmented memories. \n\n\n\nA non-linear investigation of the complexities and nuances of relationships and the moral boundaries we set: highlighting the different dynamics in LGBTQIA+ relationships while exploring what makes love (and the suffering it causes) a universal experience. \n\n\n\n“Grey Area” takes its space on stage earnestly and honestly in response to two contemporary issues: homobitransphobia and ableism. How can a journey of queer love be completely redefined by pain and understanding?

SUMMARY:This Is The Land
DESCRIPTION:What exists in the ‘thin places’ where the distance between the living and the non-living is blurred? \n\n\n\nA symphony of stories resound from the land… \n\n\n\nTranscending narrative\, stories seep from the earth’s sediments\, affirming the unsettling feeling of a presence existing where logically it should not. Five shapeshifting figures navigate their arrival. Evoking a compelling cycle of the Seasons. Spring/Beginning: rebirth and resilience. Summer/Freedom: memory and desire. Autumn/Resistance: trespass and dispossession. Winter/Survival: journeying and hope. This Is The Land could not be more relevant to the issues of our times – ecological crisis\, social inequality\, and political repression of dissenting voices – whilst raising these in a highly original way. \n\n\n\nThis Is The Land’s stripped-back abstract-expressionist style is highly visual\, visceral\, and physical. The performance resists narrative through its ‘mash-up’ style of fragmentary images\, compelling movement and dance\, atmospheric soundtrack and live-vocal looping.

SUMMARY:SIAPA YANG BAWA MELAYU AKU PERGI ? (WHO TOOK MY MALAY AWAY?)
DESCRIPTION:Siapa Yang Bawa Melayu Aku Pergi? (Who Took My Malay Away?) is a lecture performance that was inspired by the creator’s early experiences of living in London and made with the knowledge of life as a Malay person who was born\, raised and educated in Singapore. This solo performance explores what it means to be Malay and what it then means to be Malay in Singapore. \n\n\n\nWhat begins simply as an attempt to reconnect with his culture – by sharing the disappearing traditional writing and reading system of the Malay Language\, Jawi – then becomes a deeper exploration of lost culture\, customs\, heritage and self.

SUMMARY:The Good Women
DESCRIPTION:It’s the 1960s and from the counterculture to Woodstock\, the world is changing. But not in conservative Switzerland\, where women did not get the vote until the 1970s and were legally confined to the kitchen and household. Bette\, the star of a popular TV cooking show\, and Trudy\, a housewife\, are about to change that. \n\n\n\n“The Good Women” is a brand-new funny\, bold and romantic piece of theatre inspired by a true story about two extraordinary women.
