SUMMARY:Zach Blas Lecture Performance
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture performance\, Zach Blas delves into the key concepts behind his new work CULTUS. \n\n\n\nTaking us through research into organisations like The Way of The Future Church\, theories like Ray Kurzweil’s spiritual machine\, and transhumanism in sci-fi and religion\, Blas traces the emergence of an AI-based religiosity\, where human flesh transforms into biometric data and emotional tears are transformed into a symbolic language of sacred quantification. \n\n\n\nThe performance lecture will be followed by a conversation with arebyte curator Rebecca Edwards exploring the installation further. \n\n\n\nThis lecture performance takes place over Zoom. The meeting link will be sent to your email when you have booked tickets on Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Written Portraits: A poetry performance and discussion
DESCRIPTION:Hear the stories of patients and staff at a typical London hospital\, told through the poems of Di Sherlock. \n\n\n\nShe shrugs off the memory \n\n\n\nlike a scratchy sweater \n\n\n\nor an old skin\, \n\n\n\nsays cancer is one more curve ball \n\n\n\nLife’s thrown her way. \n\n\n\n‘Written portraits’ is a collection of poems by Di Sherlock drawn from conversations with patients and staff she met during a residency at Charing Cross Hospital and Maggie’s Centre West. \n\n\n\nThe poems are part of the ‘People Like You’ project which sees Di’s collaborators at Imperial College and Goldsmiths University of London investigating perceptions around personalised medicine. The series of 21 portraits explore the ways that preference\, need\, desire\, pleasure and recognition serve as grounds for judging people to be alike. \n\n\n\nAt this lunchtime event\, the Great Exhibition Road Festival brings Di together with anthropologist Sophie Day to discuss the project and the impact this way of getting to know and profile individuals might inform future approaches to a more personalised approach to healthcare. The event will also feature readings of some of the poems. \n\n\n\nWritten Portraits was funded by the Wellcome Trust.

SUMMARY:Slingshot Hip Hop – Free Online Film Screening [MARSM Digital]
DESCRIPTION:This film is available from April 05 – 19. \nThis bold documentary portrays the Palestinian hip hop scene in the early 2000s\, and sheds light on the lives of its main protagonists. \nLive discussion presented by MARSMDigital on Thursday 8th April with Tamer Nafar and Mahmood Jrere from DAM. Free registration: https://bit.ly/2PGTim2. \nJacqueline Reem Salloum’s award-winning documentary ‘Slingshot Hip Hop’ chronicles the birth of hip hop in Palestine\, following the lives and dreams of some of the pioneering artists at the forefront of its musical movement. \nBraiding together the stories of young Palestinians living in Gaza\, the West Bank and Palestine 48\, the film spotlights the power of hip hop as a tool to surmount divisions imposed by occupation and social injustice. From internal checkpoints and segregation walls to gender norms and generational differences\, this is the story of young artists breaking through the borders that separate them and fighting the constructs that alienate them. \nPremiering in 2008 at Sundance Film Festival\, the film features artists such as the veteran hip hop trio DAM\, pioneering rapper Mahmood Shalabi\, one of the first female rappers Abeer Al Zinati and Gaza’s PR\, and sees the young-faced\, ambitious rappers paving the way to cement Palestine as a musical and cultural powerhouse of the region – taking their messages and demands for equality and justice to a global audience by conquering the stage. \nAbout the Director:\nJacqueline Reem Salloum is an artist and filmmaker with Palestinian and Syrian roots. Her multi-media based artwork focuses on documenting histories and memories of people that have been fragmented by displacement and exile.

SUMMARY:20 Years of Palestinian Hip Hop – In conversation with Tamer Nafar and Mahmood Jrere [MARSM Digital]
DESCRIPTION:MARSM UK and SOAS Concert Series present: 20 Years of Palestinian Hip Hop – In Conversation with Tamer Nafar and Mahmood Jrere. \n*This event is in conjunction with #MASRMDigital’s Music Film of the Month\, ‘Slingshot Hip Hop’ is streaming for free from April 05-19.* \nJoin us as we look back at the fascinating trajectory of hip hop in Palestine\, the beginnings of the alternative music scene\, and the changes that accompanied the music in the last two decades. We will be exploring the spaces of performance\, creative tools available for artists\, the role of social media\, and the evolution of the music scene through a lively discussion and insights from two of the most established Palestinian artists\, Tamer Nafar and Mahmood Jrere. \nWorking together since the late 1990s\, Tamer and Mahmood were two of the founding members of the iconic rap trio DAM\, the first Palestinian hip hop crew and among the first to shape rap in Arabic. Struck by the uncanny resemblance of the reality of the streets in a Tupac video to the streets in their own neighborhood in Lyd\, the trio were inspired to tell their stories through hip hop. In 2015\, the band was officially joined by Palestinian musician\, composer and artist Maysa Daw. \nMahmood Jrere \nAs well as his involvement in DAM\, Mahmood Jrere is also an independent artist\, music entrepreneur\, and the co-founder of the Palestine Music Expo. Mahmood released his debut album Rhythm of the Tribe in 2016\, and the past year saw him release four singles. \nTamer Nafar \nThe leader and founding member of DAM\, Tamer Nafar is also an independent artist\, actor\, screenwriter and social activist. He released a stream of DIY and collaborative productions in 2020\, including the tongue-in-cheek ‘Ba’do Fi Roh (Still Got Soul)’. \nBrief description of film: \n‘Slingshot Hip Hop’ is an award-winning documentary that portrays the Palestinian hip hop scene in the early 2000s\, and sheds light on the lives of its main protagonists. \nBraiding together the stories of young Palestinians living in Gaza\, the West Bank and Palestine 48\, the film spotlights the power of hip hop as a tool to surmount divisions imposed by occupation and social injustice.
