DESCRIPTION:Join us for a night of dizzyingly eclectic music incorporating African\, Afro-Cuban\, Jazz\, improvisation\, soul and funk.\nTrumpeter Claude Deppa\, from Cape Town\, South Africa\, is well known for playing with the likes of Miriam Makeba\, Julian Bahula\, Louis Moholo/Viva La Black\, Brotherhood of Breath and Art Blakey. He also teaches\, leading the brass section of Kinetika Bloco\, a band of young musicians from across London playing carnival music. \nClare Hirst is a saxophonist based in London\, who has worked with artists such as David Bowie\, Grupo Lokito\, The Communards\, Mica Paris\, Maxi Priest\, Amazulu and Mervyn Africa. She has worked with Claude for 30 years\, before forming their band\, Claude Deppa Clare Hirst Band. \nThe band released their 2nd album “Beyond Bahula” in 2024. It consists of 8 original tracks written by Clare and Claude. Spanning influences from Abdullah Ibrahim and Julian Bahula to Ornette Coleman and beyond\, the band creates an inclusive and high energy atmosphere to be enjoyed by all. \nJazzwise: “Bass man Miles Danso made his presence felt similarly in the quintet fronted by Claude Deppa’s trumpet and Clare Hirst’s tenor whose set managed to combine clever timings and cross-rhythms with smoothly grooving tunes.” \nLondon Jazz Bands

Her performances have been described as “receiving rapturous reception” (The Times\, London)\, “brilliant and seamless with great focus” (AZ State Press) and “intuitively talented” (Bridge Initiative). As a soloist and chamber musician she regularly performs throughout the United States and abroad including recent performances at Iceland’s Harpa International Music Festival\, Manchester Music Festival in Vermont\, Music in the Mountains Festival and Crested Butte Music Festival\, “Oh My Ears” New Music Festival in Arizona\, and the DiMenna Center in New York City. Sarah serves as Assistant Professor of Violin and Music Business at the University of Northern Colorado. \nBased in Wiltshire\, mezzo soprano https://www.alicepsimmons.com/ – Alice Simmons teaches singing and performs classical and folk music from early and baroque to the present day. Recent engagements include Alto soloist in Bach’s B minor mass and the Magnificat with Phoenix Choir and Baroque Orchestra\, and the Modulus Quartet\, lute song with Musicke in the Ayre in St Mary’s Bathwick\, and recording a set of folk influenced winter songs\, with co-writer Paul Elwood and other instrumentalists in Colorado. She also enjoys where music meets other art forms and has performed in works by Tino Sehgal and Leonor Serrano Rivas.

Following this Jim toured and recorded in various UK quartet formats\, notably the his Reunion quartet with Gareth Williams\, Gary Husband and Mick Hutton\, “String Theory”. In 2019 Jim recorded his “Volunteers” album featuring many of his own tunes and a great 9 piece band lineup\, featuring the cream of British jazz musicians. DESCRIPTION:Clark Tracey presents his new quintet\, providing a platform for our most outstanding young musicians. \n  \nClark Tracey\, a well-established jazz master\, recognised as a most inventive jazz drummer\, composer\, educator and bandleader\, having appeared over forty years in the company of some of the world’s jazz greats\, presents his new quintet\, providing a platform for our most outstanding young musicians.\nThe Quintet have recently released their debut CD\, “Introducing Emily Masser”\, on Clark’s label Stray Horn Records\, followed by a national tour in April and May of 20 dates\, with the band heading to Lauderdale House on the 16th. \nProgrammed by Blow the Fuse. \n  \nPerformers \nClark Tracey – Drums \nA Five-Time Winner of “Best Drummer” in the British Jazz Awards\, Clark Tracey has built a reputation since the early ‘80s as a talent spotter of future stars of the British jazz scene; Guy Barker\, Alex Ridout\, Daniel Casimir\, Zoe Rahman and Mark Armstrong\, to name just a few. Clark was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2019 Birthday Honours for services to music and the promotion of jazz. \nAlex Clarke – Saxophones \nAlex Clarke on alto and tenor saxophones is aged 23 and won the Rising Star in the British Jazz Awards in 2019 and was a finalist in the BBC Young Jazz Musician in 2020. She was also a nominee in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards in 2021 and 2022. In 2022 she successfully released her debut CD “Only A Year” with Dave Newton\, Dave Green and Clark. \nEmily Masser – Vocals \nEmily Masser is an astonishing vocalist\, still 20 years of age and attending the Guildhall School of Music. Her vocalese has already impressed hardened jazz vocalists\, including Claire Martin and Liane Carroll who have both endorsed Emily and shared their stage with her. Daughter of saxophonist Dean Masser\, her years belie her considerable talent\, which began at Chetham’s School of Music. \nGraham Harvey – Piano \nGraham Harvey on piano is one of our most experienced pianists\, having studied at Berkley College in Boston\, becoming MD of Incognito\, currently Stacey Kent’s pianist and is now much sought after as a freelancer playing with major stars including Dave O’Higgins\, Alan Barnes and Mark Nightingale.\nJames Owston – Double Bass \nJames Owston on double bass is 27\, a graduate of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and a runner up in the BBC Young Jazz Musician Finals a few years ago. DESCRIPTION:Our super spooky Halloween walks are back! Join a host of creepy characters on an adventure around Lauderdale House and Waterlow Park on the most sinister night of the year! \nFAQs\n\nIs it scary? \nThis obviously depends on your child to a large extent. You will be going around the park in the dark\, which can be creepy. However\, you will be in a group with 50 other people as well as stewards. Our actors appear as classic Halloween characters  Some of them are good humoured and fun; some of them are a bit spookier… and there’s always at least one ‘baddie’. We try to find a balance between making it a bit scary at times – it’s Halloween after all – and also funny and fun. \nWhat age is it for? \nAgain\, every child is different. On average 5 to 9-year-olds enjoy it the most\, but we regularly have little ones who have a ball and less cynical over 9’s really enjoy the fun of it too. All children must be accompanied by an adult.  \nWhat happens if it rains? \nThese shows are outside but demons and witches aren’t worried by a drop of rain so we’ll go ahead regardless unless we judge it to be dangerous. Wear your wellies\, put on your waterproofs and make the most of it! \nHow long does the walk last? \nAround 45 minutes. \nCan I bring babies? \nWe understand that it’s not always practical to leave a baby at home if you are bringing other children so are happy for you to bring young ones but please note they will need to be carried as it is not feasible to accommodate pushchairs. You do not need to purchase a ticket/space for children under 2 years old. \nIs it wheelchair accessible? \nWe regret that Waterlow Park itself is not entirely accessible. If you or your children are in a wheelchair\, please call or email us and we’ll discuss what we can do to make sure you get the best experience \nCan I order food and drink? \nOur cafe will be open to order drinks and snacks.

DESCRIPTION:A wonderful array of musicians and poets will perform at Highgate’s beautiful Lauderdale House on 9th July to raise funds to help families of political prisoners suffering under the brutal Belarusian regime. \n\n\n\n\n\nFor almost three years now\, the people of Belarus have suffered increasingly harsh repressive measures under dictator Lukashenko and for families of political prisoners life is very hard. To raise funds to aid these innocent victims\, leading Belarusian poet Hanna Komar is bringing together a terrific line-up of musicians and poets for an uplifting evening of music and poetry entitled ‘Songs for Belarus’. \n\n\n\n\n\n“I know what it means to be a political prisoner and how much difference supporting their families can make\,” says Hanna\, who was herself imprisoned after the protests\, then forced to flee to London. \n\n\n\n\n\nBesides music and poetry\, there’s an auction for lots including masterclasses in cocktail making to writing books from one of the world’s most published authors. \n\n\n\n\n\nArtists include: Rachel Sutton\, Anthony Cable (Aspects of Love)\, Alex Schmerechanska (Voice of Poland)\, Mazaika\, Dan March (Pramface\, Johnny English)\, Helen Schlesinger (Merlin\, Sensitive Skin\, RSC)\, Clare Summerskill\, Kristin Milward (Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant)\, Mark Coverdale

Alan’s unique musicianship\, indefatigable touring\, and warm rapport with audiences have made him uniquely popular in British jazz.  He has received over 25 British Jazz Awards\, most recently in 2014 for clarinet\, and has been made BBC Jazz Musician of the Year twice. \nDavid Newton was voted best Jazz Pianist in the British Jazz Awards for the thirteenth time in 2014 and was made a Fellow of Leeds College of Music in 2003. DESCRIPTION:Take a break on a Tuesday lunchtime and enjoy 45 minutes of gorgeous classical music performed live by our resident pianist Stephen Hose upstairs in the beautiful Long Gallery overlooking Waterlow Park.\nStephen trained at the Royal Academy of Music\, where he held a Vaughan Williams scholarship\, and has worked extensively as a Musical Director\, conductor and pianist in London and regional theatre.  He has played at most of the London concert halls and has performed in France and Germany.  He is currently Pianist in Residence at Lauderdale House\, Highgate. \nProjects abroad have ranged from the English Theater of Frankfurt to The Lost Colony at the 2\,000-seat outdoor theatre on Roanoke Island\, USA.  TV work has included being the pianist on Channel 4 ‘s Titanic\, The Mission\,  accompanist for The Choir\, and five years as Musical Associate/Director for TV productions of Christmas Glory.  He was Chorus Master for Jessye Norman’s Ellington’s Sacred Songs at the Barbican Theatre and Epidavros\, Greece. \nHis work as Music Director for OperaUK has included Barber of Seville\, Cosi fan Tutte\, La Traviata\, the Merry Widow\, Olé and El Amore Brujo.  For Merry Opera\, work includes La Traviata\, The Magic Flute\, Kiss Me\, Figaro!\, The Barber of Seville and La Belle Hélène (aka Troy Boy).  He has also conducted over 50 performances of their unique staged Messiah. \n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Still Waters was born out of a long association and friendship going back 40 years between Henry Lowther and Britain’s premiere bassist Dave Green – the band is now one of the country’s most accomplished and creative bands.\n\n\n\nAlthough a classic quintet of two front lines and rhythm\, Still Waters plays radical and original music\, ranging from gentle\, quietly pastoral\, and melodic music reflecting the band’s name to dynamic\, free improvisation. The main thing to say about it is that it is indeed a band – not just a collection of individual musicians; in other words\, the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts.
