SUMMARY:Love Lines
DESCRIPTION:London Sinfonietta returns to Kings Place\, presenting an evening of music by Scottish composers exploring the idea of love and our deepest human need for connection. \nJudith Weir’s evocative music sets the scene\, before the Public World Premiere of a privately commissioned work Love Bade me Welcome by James MacMillan setting poetry about divine love by George Herbert. \nPeter Maxwell Davies’ Hymn to Artemis Locheia is a rarely performed and virtuosic work for clarinet quintet\, written as a celebration of the joy and exuberance between couples when new life is confirmed. MacMillan’s expressive After the Tryst is an instrumental short based on his previous setting of a love poem by William Soutar. \nThe event will last approx. 1 hour\, without an interval. \nJudith Weir  Sketches from a Bagpipers Album\nJames MacMillan  Love Bade me Welcome – World Public Premiere\nElectra Perivolaris New work – World Premiere\nPeter Maxwell Davies  Hymn to Artemis Locheia\nJames MacMillan After the Tryst \nMark van de Wiel clarinet\nJennifer France soprano\nSimon Haram saxophone\nLondon Sinfonietta \nThe sound for this concert will be enhanced by the use of the d&b Soundscape system at King’s Place.

SUMMARY:Turning Points: Takemitsu
DESCRIPTION:Our Turning Points series presents the music of great composers whose output was so distinctive that it had an enormous impact on the direction of contemporary music. The focus here is Japanese composer Tōru Takemitsu in this subtly colourful programme based on the composer’s love for nature and the outdoors. Takemitsu had an especially close relationship with the London Sinfonietta\, expressed through some extraordinarily beautiful ensemble scores which are now amongst the composer’s most celebrated works. \n\n\n\nTōru Takemitsu  AirClaude Debussy  Poissons d’orOlivier Messiaen  Le merle noirTōru Takemitsu  Rain Tree Sketch II: in memory of MessiaenAnton Webern  3 Little PiecesTōru Takemitsu  And then I knew ‘twas windTchaikovsky / Takemitsu  Autumn SongTōru Takemitsu  Rain Coming \n\n\n\nChloe Rooke  conductorLondon Sinfonietta

SUMMARY:London Piano Festival
DESCRIPTION:London Piano Festival is delighted to return to Kings Place for a wide-ranging weekend of exciting repertoire performed by an exceptional lineup of pianists. \n\n\n\nVisionary pianist Tamara Stefanovich opens this year’s Festival with a programme exploring form and freedom\, beginning with Bach’s Aria Variata (BWV 989)\, interweaving the birdsong-inspired pieces of Messiaen and Rameau\, and ending with Messaien’s mesmerising Cantéyodjayâ. \n\n\n\nMusic for two pianos has been performed at the London Piano Festival every year since the inaugural 2016 edition\, helping introduce audiences to new works whilst celebrating rarely-performed masterpieces. This year Dame Imogen Cooper is joined by fellow pianists Katya Apekisheva\, Charles Owen and Dominic Degavino\, all of whom have benefitted from her unique insights and guidance. Together they will take to the stage in different pairings to focus on the extraordinary richness of Schubert’s duet music to recreate the intimate musical gatherings of early 19th century Vienna. \n\n\n\nKatya Apekisheva and Noriko Ogawa explore contrasting twentieth-century preludes in their afternoon recital. First\, Apekisheva will perform Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes\, a collection of short pieces in all twenty-four keys\, taking the audience through various moods across the complete set. By contrast\, acclaimed Debussy player Noriko Ogawa will play Debussy’s 12 Prèludes\, Book One\, an imaginative collection that includes some of his most popular piano pieces; The Girl with the Flaxen Hair and The Sunken Cathedral. \n\n\n\nAward-winning jazz pianist and composer Vijay Iyer will perform a solo improvised set. Known for performing internationally with ensembles and his trio\, this special evening of solo jazz improvisation will be a rare treat for London audiences to experience another side of Iyer’s unique creativity. \n\n\n\nTo celebrate the launch of his new book\, concert pianist and lecturer Paul Roberts returns to the Festival to present a lecture-recital celebrating Liszt’s passionate response to the poetry of Francesco Petrarca. Roberts’ book – Reading Franz Liszt – explores the inspiration Liszt drew from Petrarca’s poetry\, revealing the link between two significant artists born 500 years apart. Charles Owen will complete the Liszt theme with a programme devoted to some of the glorious music inspired by the composer’s spirituality and faith.

SUMMARY:Tea Towels and Tantrums: Live Podcast Panel – London Podcast Festival
DESCRIPTION:London Podcast Festival – Comedian and Funny Women finalist Ola Labib joins Hajar J. Woodland to discuss growing up in (and out of) hijab.\n‘Why have you got a tea towel on your head?’ That’s the question writer\, and performer Hajar J. Woodland was constantly asked throughout her childhood. Raised Muslim\, she was only five when she started wearing the headscarf – well before even the strictest Muslims would consider it mandatory. Thirty years on and no longer a hijabi\, she lives with the conflicts of a British Muslim identity\, which she explored in her podcast Conversations with My Sister. \nHajar’s now bringing the most popular episode\, Tea Towel\, to a live audience. Tea Towels and Tantrums will give you an insight into how it feels to wear the headscarf and why girls wear it. We ask how much of a say parents\, schools and governments should have in what a child wears and cover everything from bodily autonomy and sexuality to cultural conflicts and Islamophobia. \nYes\, we’re focusing on the hijab – but this conversation’s about so much more. We determine what children wear has far-reaching implications for everyone\, so you won’t want to miss this. \nIf you like your discussions funny\, nuanced and empathic\, this is for you. Expect a light touch on one heavy subject!

DESCRIPTION:In partnership with MARSM\, we are delighted to welcome back Palestinian composer and pianist Faraj Suleiman to the EFG London Jazz Festival in 2019.\n____________________________ \nAfter selling out at the EFG London Jazz Festival in 2018\, renowned Palestinian composer and pianist Faraj Suleiman returns to the capital to play an exclusive quintet show. \nBorn in a village in the upper Galilee\, Suleiman has been playing the piano since the tender age of three. SUMMARY:Maurice Louca Elephantine Band | UK Première
DESCRIPTION:MARSM UK and Kings Place present Maurice Louca\, an Egyptian musician and composer born in Cairo\, is one of the most gifted\, prolific and adventurous figures on Egypt’s thriving experimental arts scene today. \nMaurice Louca has in recent years garnered a global reputation through two previous solo albums and an expanding\, evolving lineup of genre-defying collaborations. The Wire called his 2014 sophomore solo effort\, Salute the Parrot ‘remarkable music—dense\, driven and splashed with colour’. In 2017\, the self-titled debut by Lekhfa\, the trio of Louca and vocalists Maryam Saleh and Tamer Abu Ghazaleh\, was praised as an ‘edgy triumph’ in The Guardian. \nFor Louca\, Elephantine\, his 3rd and most ambitious album to date\, released on Northern Spy Records\, serves as both the pinnacle of his wide-ranging experience and a bold next step in his development as a composer\, arranger and bandleader. On this panoramic 38-minute odyssey performed by a dozen musicians\, he culls inspiration primarily from the brilliant players in his international artistic community—especially sometime collaborator Sam Shalabi’s Land of Kush. \nThat outsize\, otherworldly large ensemble\, Louca explains\, provided the catalyst for him to tackle ‘this idea of writing for bigger bands that I thought was reserved only for the Frank Zappas of the world.’ He was emboldened further by the extraordinary\, empathic musicianship of his group—a multinational assembly to match the all-embracing aesthetic at hand\, and boasting personnel from Egypt\, Italy\, Iraq\, Sweden\, Turkey and Denmark.\n______________________________ \nThe EFG London Jazz Festival returns to Kings Place this November\, along with an illustrious line-up of international artists.

SUMMARY:IGF Guitar Summit 2019
DESCRIPTION:IGF Guitar Summit is back again with an exciting international line-up of performers. The legendary jazz guitarist\, pianist and singer Stanley Jordan will open the IGF Guitar Summit (Thursday 18 July 2019\, 7.30pm\, Kings Place\, Hall One). On the guitar\, he has created special techniques in order to express his phenomenal musicianship including his ‘touch technique’ – an advanced form of two-handed tapping. Having trained initially as a classical pianist\, he will be performing on piano\, singing and playing – sometimes simultaneously at this special London performance. The award-winning guitarist and composer Antonio Forcione will be joined by the wonderful singer-songwriter and guitarist Jule Malischke performing their own songs (Friday\, 19 July 2019\, 7.30pm\, Kings Place\, Hall One). Jule will be making her London debut. \nThis year\, IGF Guitar Summit is also hosting the Finals of the second EuroStrings Guitar Competition\, bringing together 17 of the finest international young guitarists\, all first prize winners of international guitar competitions across Europe\, to compete in a super competition. The winner will receive 8\,000 Euros and a European tour as well as concerts in China and the USA (Sunday 21 July 2019\, 7pm\, Kings Place\, Hall One). \nA shared recital on the Saturday evening will feature the outstanding British lutenist Nigel North in one half and the UK debut of classical guitarist Goran Krivokapić\, whose sensitive and expressive playing will provide the perfect balance to the intimate lute recital. Nigel North’s recital\, titled Capriccio\, will feature music from his latest CD on BGS Records\, the fourth in a series of the music of the great baroque composer and lutenist Sylvius Leopold Weiss (1687–1750). Goran Krivokapić has emerged as one of the foremost guitarists on the international scene\, setting new standards with his breath-taking virtuosity\, with a subtle wit and deeply musical interpretations. This concert marks the UK debut of this extraordinary guitarist\, an event not to be missed for anyone interested in guitar! (Saturday\, 21 July 2019\, 7.30pm\, Kings Place\, Hall Two). \nThe virtuoso flamenco guitarist Juan Martín\, who has recorded 18 albums and given solo concerts from Shanghai to San Francisco to the Montreux Jazz Festival\, will be giving a solo recital (Sunday 21 July\, 7.30pm\, Kings Place\, Hall Two). \nOver the weekend\, there will be two excellent daytime concerts. The outstanding young classical guitarist\, Jesse Flowers\, winner of the 1st Prize in the first EuroStrings Guitar Competition\, in 2018\, will give a solo recital\, playing music by J.S. Bach and Philip Houghton (Saturday\, 20 July 2019\, 1.30pm\, Kings Place\, Hall Two). \nThe award-winning Spanish classical guitarist\, Marco Socías\, born into a family of musicians\, became a professor of guitar at the young age of 21. Although he has performed in all the major concert halls of Europe and has made eight recordings\, this concert offers a rare opportunity to hear him perform. Sharing his concert will be the VIDA Guitar Quartet: Mark Ashford\, Amanda Cook\, Mark Eden and Christopher Stell\, performing a programme of Corelli\, Gershwin and Sérgio Assad. Their most recent recording\, Bachianas (BGS Records)\, has received great critical acclaim (Sunday 21 July\, 3pm\, Kings Place\, Hall Two). \nOver the past 24 years\, International Guitar Foundation’s commissioning programme has become Europe’s largest\, with a list of over 90 commissions of new works to date. \nIGF Guitar Summit was established in 2014 as an intense turbo-charged four-day ‘July’ event to inspire everyone during the summer holidays and this year’s line-up of artists will guarantee that. \n  \nTo book Guitarist for Events Music for London
