SUMMARY:PROTOMARTYR + ES
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nPROTOMARTYRESThursday 26 OctoberElectric Ballroom184 Camden High St\, Camden Town\, London\, NW1 8QP7pm-11pm | £17.50 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/hca4d1d3c365 \n\n\n\nPROTOMARTYR are a post-punk band from Detroit who have mastered the art of evoking place: the grinding Midwest humility of their hometown\, as well as the x-rayed elucidation of America that comes with their vantage. Protomartyr—vocalist Joe Casey\, guitarist Greg Ahee\, drummer Alex Leonard\, and bassist Scott Davidson—have become synonymous with caustic\, impressionistic assemblages of politics and poetry\, the literal and oblique. \n\n\n\nThe group’s forthcoming sixth album\, recorded at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo\, Texas\, is called Formal Growth In The Desert. And though frontman Joe Casey did have a humbling experience staring at awe-inspiring Sonoran rock formations and reckoning with his own smallness in the scheme of things – as recounted in the single “Elimination Dances” – the title is not necessarily a nod to the sandy expanses of the southwest. Detroit\, too\, is like a desert. “The desert is more of a metaphor or symbol\,” Casey says\, “of emotional deserts\, or a place or time that seems to lack life.” The desert brings an existential awareness that is ultimately internal. Formal Growth In The Desert is a 12-song testament to “getting on with life\,” even when it feels impossibly hard. “I was trying to find a way forward after some pretty heavy things\, without lyrically resorting to\, Oh my god\, my life sucks\,” Casey says. “I was trying to see what was beyond the trouble.” The titles of the two opening songs—the moody “Make Way” followed by the charging ennui of “For Tomorrow”—complete that thought. A filmic sensibility is manifest in the band’s dynamic\, spacious sound and Casey’s storytelling\, too\, whether he’s critiquing ominous techno-capitalism or processing aging\, the future\, and the possibility of love.http://protomartyrband.com/ \n\n\n\nES returned this April with an incredible new EP called ‘Fantasy’. A four-track contact-high anxiety amid fact and facsimile\, this release attempts to define a sound that still resonates in an increasingly confused public theatre\, where cerebral dreams manifest in corrupt fascination. Echoing the legendary Pylon or the later\, disco-inspired releases from PIL\, tracks like ‘Emergency’ and ‘Unreal’ blend the band’s established disjunctive style of gothic restlessness with brighter\, poppy\, and danceable tones. These stylistically unwind in transition with the increasingly claustrophobic pieces like ‘Too Late’ and ‘Swallowed Whole’\, syncopating a parallel design of the frantic and the fashionable. Es deconstruct our modern wreckage of personhood and self-deceit\, granting a sense of solidarity inside alienation. Inside ‘Fantasy’ we visualize our own estrangement\, and it is only when this mirror fades that we find the tools to fight back.https://esband.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:Deerhoof + Sacred Paws
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nDEERHOOFSACRED PAWSWednesday 31 AugustElectric Ballroom\, 184 Camden High St\, Camden\, London\, NW1 8QP\, UK7pm | £17 | Tickets:  https://link.dice.fm/pc5188b40f90 \n\n\n\nDEERHOOF have continually quested for daring storytelling and radical sounds over their eighteen boundless albums\, as experimental as they are pop. 2020’s critically acclaimed\, overwhelmingly prescient Future Teenage Cave Artists explored fairytale visions of post-apocalypse\, welding intrinsic melodies with absurdist digital recording methods. Its immediate sequel Love-Lore\, a live covers medley\, channeled futurist mid-century artists—Parliament\, Sun Ra and Stockhausen\, to name a handful— into a patchwork love letter to the anti-authoritarian expressions that inspire the band. \n\n\n\nDeerhoof’s latest\, Actually\, You Can\, is a genre-abundant record that uses technicolor vibrancy and arpeggiated muscularity to offer a vital shock from capitalism’s purgatorial hold. The band says\, “Think of all the beauty\, positivity and love that gets deemed ugly\, negative and hateful by the self-proclaimed guardians of ‘common sense.’ We’d hardly be destroying society by dismantling their colonial economics and prisons and gender roles and aesthetics. We’d be creating it!” \n\n\n\n\nhttps://deerhoof.bandcamp.com/\n\n\n\n\nSACRED PAWS are a fantastic\, intuitive dream punk duo\, comprising Eilidh Rodgers of Golden Grrls on drums\, and Rachel Aggs from Trash Kit and Shopping on guitar. Raw Soweto high-life riffs and rolling Afrobeat grooves are filtered through post-punk sass and ramshackle K Records charm. It’s an utterly joyous sound\, the duo trading giddy melodies and righteous chants over febrile rhythms and chunky\, infectious riffage. Rock Action released the band’s debut album ‘Strike A Match’ in 2017 and it received a slew of incredible reviews from the likes of Q\, DIY\, Clash\, Loud & Quiet\, The Skinny and was voted Scottish Album of the Year too! In 2019 they followed that up with ‘Run Around The Sun’ (out May 31st on Merge / Rock Action) brimming with upbeat reflections on growing up and looking back. \n\n\n\nhttp://www.sacredpaws.co.uk/

SUMMARY:Cairokee: ‘The Ugly Ducklings’ UK Album Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Marsm & El Wekala present: Cairokee \nAfter selling out two nights at the Jazz Cafe in 2018\, Cairo’s trailblazing rock pioneers return to London to premiere their anticipated 6th album\, ‘Ugly Ducklings’. \nArticulating the many elements of contemporary Egyptian society that drive their generation\, Cairokee’s anthemic calls for freedom and societal changes have become the soundtrack to a generation and an innate reflection of their unparalleled fan base. \nTheir latest and sixth album “Ugly Duckling” was launched in March 2019 and builds upon Cairokee’s “Parallel Universe” established in their song “No2ta Beida” (White Dot). It is a space through which they invite all the ‘outcasts’ to break free from patriarchal and societal shackles\, traditions and restrictions. All that cannot be discussed is put on display through the ugly – the ugly duckling. Musically\, the album builds on the band’s iconic indie\, pop and chaabi rock traditions while dancing its way through electronic influences and cutting vocals. \nSpecial support guest TBA.\n_____________________________________________________________\n14+ but all under 16s must be accompanied by an adult and may be asked to show\nphoto ID. \nFor wheelchair access please email admin@electricballroom.co.uk. Wheelchair users can access all of the main (ground) floor.
