DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the bilingual publication of The Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible\, Czech poet and architect Pavla Melková and leading British sculptor Antony Gormley meet on stage to continue an artistic dialogue that started six years ago in Prague when they first met\, and the idea of a joint book was born. In The Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible Pavla\, Melková’s poetry meets Antony Gormley’s drawings\, circling the same centre and unfolding from the same horizon in their search for the essence of life\, to emerge in a common language. \n\n\n\nAntony Gormley’s images and a staged reading of Pavla Melková’s poems by translator and poet Joshua Mensch will accompany the launch of this bilingual edition. \n\n\n\nFollowed by audience Q&A and a book signing. \n\n\n\nPAVLA MELKOVÁ is a practising architect\, visual artist\, poet and writer who regularly lectures on art and architecture. Her widely-recognized architecture is visible throughout the Czech Republic\, where she has won numerous awards\, including Architect of the Year (2014)\, the Prague Mayor’s Prize (2012)\, and the National Prize for Architecture (2012). She has published seven books on architecture\, including most recently\, The Humanistic Role of Architecture (2016) and The Architecture of Reciprocity (2020). She is a regular contributor to professional architecture journals\, anthologies\, and collaborative works. Her two volumes of poetry include The Edges of the Day (2017) and Inner Time (2019). In 2012\, she founded the Office for Public Space at the Institute for Planning and Development of the City of Prague (IPR)\, which she headed until 2017. She is a member and vice-chair of the Gremial Council of IPR and is a partner at the architecture firm MCA atelier\, which she co-founded. In 2015\, she founded the course Concept and Interpretation at the Faculty of Architecture\, where she teaches. \n\n\n\nANTONY GORMLEY is widely acclaimed for his sculptures\, installations and public artworks investigating the human body’s relationship to space. His work has developed the potential opened up by sculpture since the 1960s through a critical engagement with both his own body and those of others in a way that confronts fundamental questions of where human being stands about nature and the cosmos. Gormley continually tries to identify the space of art as a place of becoming in which new behaviours\, thoughts and feelings can arise. Gormley’s work has been widely exhibited throughout the UK and internationally. A major solo exhibition of his work was presented at the Royal Academy of Arts\, London\, in September 2019. Permanent public works include the Angel of the North (Gateshead\, England)\, Another Place (Crosby Beach\, England)\, Inside Australia (Lake Ballard\, Western Australia)\, Exposure (Lelystad\, The Netherlands) and Chord (MIT – Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, Cambridge\, MA\, USA). \n\n\n\nGormley was awarded the Turner Prize in 1994\, the South Bank Prize for Visual Art in 1999\, the Bernhard Heiliger Award for Sculpture in 2007\, the Obayashi Prize in 2012 and the Praemium Imperiale in 2013. In 1997 he was made an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) and a knight in the New Year’s Honours list in 2014. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects\, an Honorary Doctor of the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Trinity and Jesus Colleges\, Cambridge. Gormley has been a Royal Academician since 2003. \n\n\n\nJOSHUA MENSCH is a poet and translator based in the Czech Republic. He is the author of Because. A Lyric Memoir (W. W. Norton\, 20218). He has served as an editor of B O D Y since 2012. \n\n\n\nThe Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible is a discourse between the languages of poetry and the visual arts. The book captures a dialogue between leading British sculptor Anthony Gormley and Czech poet Pavla Melková. The lines made by the words in the poems and lines of the drawings are traces that bring closer the shape of the essence – the essence of the world\, our lives\, relationships\, and situations. The strokes of the words of the poetry and the strokes of the lines of the drawings circle the same centre and unfold from the same horizon. When the marks cross paths\, the shape becomes more and more evident. Absorbed in the strokes and with developing awareness\, one mutual language emerges. DESCRIPTION:Art historian\, writer and curator of the Modern and Contemporary Art Collection at the National Gallery Prague\, Monika Čejková\, will open our new talk series\, Women in Focus. Monika will discuss her interest in contemporary art\, which paved her journey to becoming an author and curator. She will also describe her recent projects\, mostly dealing with the notion and modification of art in the digital age. Specifically\, she will talk about the philosophy of new technologies\, artificial intelligence\, cyberculture and the topics of the post-gender world\, post-humanism and digisexuality. \n\n\n\nMonika’s talk will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience. \n\n\n\nAbout the speaker: \n\n\n\nMonika Čejková is a curator of the next Fotograf Festival 2023: #Hypertension23 at National Gallery Prague and Ora et lege II at Broumov Monastery\, 2023. Recent exhibitions include\, e.g.\, The Palace of Concrete Poetry at Writers House of Georgia in Tbilisi (2022)\, Neo-rising at Polansky Gallery in Prague (2022)\, Ora et lege I at Broumov Monastery (2021)\, Fantasy Finery at Berlínskej model Gallery in Prague (2021)\, Blasted Heathat AM 180 Gallery in Prague (2020). She studied the History of Art at Charles University in Prague. She is currently undergoing a curatorial residency at the Delfina Foundation in London\, during which she plans to continue to explore the theme of art in the (post) digital age and extend her research to art about the new identity of the human being whose original form has been abstracted by digital space. \n\n\n\nIn 2020\, Monika launched a long-term nomadic project titled “Ora et lege” – a critical dialogue between contemporary art and the teachings of the Benedictine order and the Catholic Church. DESCRIPTION:Following her highly successful documentaries Generation Singles and Non-Parent\, director Jana Počtová explores further contemporary relationships following five stories about people who have decided to look for happiness in alternative relationships that deviate from the norm and are not often talked about. \n\n\n\nThe non-binary promoter of polyamory\, Fro dates Honza\, who lives with his wife\, Andrea. They form a polycule with Jakub\, who lives with Michaela and dates Andrea. Alexandr and Šárka are a stable couple practising an open relationship\, allowing them to participate in parallel intimate relationships. Dagmar is in a long-term relationship with a married partner. At the same time\, Miroslava\, abandoned by her husband\, looks for an ideal partner on dating sites. Finally\, there is Kristyna and Mirek\, a catholic couple who believe that real love is possible only in a monogamous relationship. DESCRIPTION:107 Mothers is a 2021 Russian-Language Slovak drama film by Peter Kerekes that premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival and was selected as the Slovak entry for the 2022 Official Oscar Submissions. It is set in a female prison in Ukraine. \nLesya has committed a crime of passion\, bringing her a seven-year sentence in one of Odessa’s women’s correctional facilities. She has just given birth to her first child\, and now she is entering a world populated only by women: inmates\, nurses and wardens\, women of all ages\, wives and widows\, daughters\, sisters\, pregnant women\, and women with children too. If not for the color of the uniform\, it would sometimes be hard to tell who is who. \nThe film has won many awards\, including Best Screenplay at Venice 2021\, Industry Select at the Toronto International Film Festival 2021 and Best Director at the Chicago International Film Festival 2021.

Their unassuming inner discourse is juxtaposed with rich period footage and specially composed music by Stroon. A heartfelt project by director and screenwriter Tomas Bojar\, the winner of the Proxima competition at the 2022 Karlovy Vary International festival\, whose grandfather served in the RAF as a meteorologist.

Combining extensive family archives\, animation and testimonies by Milos Forman and Madeleine Allbright\, among others\, the film traces the highly successful career of a talented and multifaceted artist who has written over forty books for children\, illustrated a further sixty\, designed mosaics for the New York subway\, giant tapestries featuring Václav Havel and Martin Luther King\, and murals in Harlem. This is a multilayered biography in which director David Sís sensitively maps his older brother’s inner world and his struggle for the individual’s freedom of artistic expression and the right to their own fantasy . \nPeter Sís is an internationally acclaimed illustrator\, author and filmmaker. He was born in Brno\, Czechoslovakia\, and attended the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague and the Royal College of Art in London. Peter is a seven-time winner of The New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book of the Year\, a two-time Boston Globe-Horn Book Award Honouree\, and has won the Society of Illustrators Gold Medal twice. Peter’s books\, Starry Messenger: Galileo Galilei\, Tibet through the Red Box\, and The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain were all named Caldecott Honor books by the American Library Association. The Wall was also awarded the Robert F. Sibert Medal. In addition\, Peter Sís is the first children’s book illustrator to win the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship. Peter won the 2012 Hans Christian Andersen Award\, the most prestigious in international children’s literature\, given biennially by the International Board on Books for Young People. Hundreds of Sís’s drawings have been published in the New York Times Book Review\, as well as in numerous other magazines. His visual art has also included subway and airport murals\, book jackets\, and hats. Sís’s films have won the West Berlin Film Festival’s Golden Bear Award\, the Grand Prix Toronto and the Cine Golden Eagle Award. He collaborated with Bob Dylan on “You Got to Serve Somebody” (1983). A selection of his films are held in the permanent collection of New York‘s Museum of Modern Art. \nDavid Sís (1962) is a graduate of the Department of Directing at the Film and TV School of Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU) in Prague\, the son of director Vladimír Sís\, and the brother of artist Peter Sís. He’s experienced in documentary filmmaking\, feature-length films\, TV series\, made-for-TV programmes\, and live television broadcasts and concerts. He is the author and screenwriter of popular TV series such as On the Road\, Embarrassments\, Pandurango\, and Family Secrets. His graduate film Hat-Trick about a football match during the Nazi occupation won an award at the International Film Festival in Kobe\, Japan while his experimental film Maltchik has received awards at festivals in Tel Aviv and Poitiers\, France.

She used to work as the Head of the Democratization department in the biggest Czech NGO\, “People in Need”\, where she supported civil society development in Eastern Europe\, Russia and Central Asia. She spent four years as a Human Rights Officer in Armenia\, working for the OSCE and two years as a Human Rights Adviser for the EUMM in Georgia. She regularly contributes to a number of Czech media outlets such as Hospodářské noviny\, Respekt\, Souvislosti and Aktualne.cz. Her book of poetry “Cheap Romance” was published in 2017 when she became a member of the Association of Czech Writers. She has served as the director of Czech Centre Kyiv since 2020. \nBarbara Drozdowicz\, CEO\, East European Resource Center\nBarbara Drozdowicz is the CEO of the East European Resource Centre. In London since 2008\, she joined the EERC in 2012\, having previously been involved in a charity support sector as a governance and funding adviser. In addition\, Barbara worked in several European social inclusion projects targeting homelessness and other persistently socially excluded groups in Poland. In 2019 Barbara received her MBA from the Open University and has since been interested in applying management sciences in the non-profit sector. \nMaria Montague\, Deputy Director\, Ukrainian Institute\nMaria Montague is the Deputy Director of the Ukrainian Institute London. She leads the Institute’s work in supporting Ukrainian refugees and UK hosts\, working closely with other Ukrainian community organizations in the UK. She has previously worked as a producer on various cultural projects related to Ukraine\, and in 2019 she co-produced an international theatre festival in Kharkiv. She has also worked as a researcher with the Arena programme\, focusing on countering Russian propaganda. \nChaired by Klára Skřivánková\, Trust for London\nKlára brings over 18 years of experience in policy\, research\, and strategy development to the debate. She is an internationally recognized expert on migration\, modern slavery\, decent work and responsible business and currently serves as the Programme Director at the Trust for London. DESCRIPTION:To commemorate the 90th anniversary of the birth of the Oscar-winning Czech filmmaker Milos Forman (Amadeus\, One Flew Over the Cuckoo´s Nest\, A Blonde in Love)\, the Czech Centre presents a new 4K restoration of his stunning debut feature film Black Peter which helped launch the famous Czechoslovak New Wave\, and was premiered at the Venice Classics in the 2017 Venice International Film Festival. \nSet during the a summer in early sixties Czechoslovakia\, Black Peter is a bittersweet comedy that revolves around shy Peter as he encounters the hypocrisy of the adult world in his first job at a small supermarket. Tasked with catching potential shoplifters Peter fails to work up the courage to intercept suspects to the exasperation of his boss. Being under constant pressure from his well-meaning but insensitive father\, Peter is similarly tongue-tied around the lovely Pavla\, focus of his erotic fantasies. SUMMARY:Sensing Places: Looking for a way back home
DESCRIPTION:Artist Tereza Stehlikova will be in conversation with curator Gareth Evans about her multi-disciplinary artistic practice and reflect on the importance of unique places and spaces in inspiring and shaping her ideas. \nPlaces and landscapes have often been an impulse behind Stehlikova’s artistic pursuits and explorations. During her creative dialogue with Jan Švankmajer\, she became interested in his surrealist group’s playful examinations of mental morphology: The way a landscape or a place can affect a child’s psychology shapes her character and becomes an extension of her inner world. At the same time\, their nooks and crannies become the containers of memories and feelings\, as Gaston Bachelard expressed so evocatively in his Poetics of Space. \nSeveral Stehlikova’s projects\, including Disappearing Wormwood (2019)\, Trieste: In Between States (2016)\, Nameless wood (2011)\, The Perpetual (2009)\, have been directly inspired by particular locations which have “cast a spell” over her and compelled her to spend time with them. Journeys across landscapes (real or imaginary) have often been an inspiration behind her elaborate participatory performances and short films involving food and ingestion as a form of travel: Across the Unseen Sea (2014) was inspired by travelling around Iceland and Journey to the Interior (2017) by Jules Verne’s imaginary Journey to the Centre of the Earth. These immersive projects usually involve collaborators from chefs\, designers\, artists\, musicians\, scientists and philosophers. \nPlace and space are also a key component in Stehlikova’s four generations of Women project (2012-ongoing)\, filmed on the location of her Prague childhood home and the summer house in South Bohemia. \nAs more time was spent online during the pandemic\, questions of places and spaces have gained a new intensity. Virtual spaces are a kind of antithesis to being “somewhere”. Stehlikova founded a contemporary arts and science journal\, Tangible Territory\, to address some of these questions. She is also preparing short residencies/workshops exploring places in South Bohemia: https://tangibleterritory.art/sensing-place/ \nTereza Stehlikova is a Czech born artist who works across media\, primarily in video and performance. She has just become the head of the visual arts department at the University of Creative Communication in Prague. Stehliková holds a PhD from the Royal College of Art\, where she researched tactile language of cinema and is currently engaged in cross-disciplinary research\, investigating how moving images can be used to communicate embodied experience as well as questioning the role of the senses in aesthetic experience. She is a founder of Sensory Sites\, an international collective based in London\, generating collaborative exhibitions\, installations and research projects that explore multi-sensory perception and bodily experience. Stehliková’s work has been shown at various film and art festivals around the world. She is also engaged in an ongoing long-term artist film project\, 4 Generations of Women (capturing the relationships between four generations of women in her own family) which has been Shortlisted for the BFI 61st London Film Festival Experimenta pitch\, presented at Svetozor Cinema in Prague and selected for a solo exhibition at Alchemy Film and Art Festival\, in Hawick\, 2019. He hosts the LRB Screen at Home programme and curates for Forum of the Future Porto\, Estuary\, First Light\, Flipside and Swedenborg Film Festivals. He commissioned and co-produced the essay film Patience (After Sebald\, Art events) by Grant Gee\, World without end (Jem Cohen\, Estuary 2016) and Things(Ben Rivers\, FVU). In addition\, he executive-produced Erase and Forget (Andrea Luka Zimmerman)\, Unseen (Dryden Goodwin)\, By Our Selves (AndrewKotting) and In Time: An Archive Life (Lasse Johansson).\nHe has conceived and curated numerous film and event seasons across the UK\, including Utopia 2016 (Somerset House)\, Place (Aldeburgh Music)\, ‘John Berger: Here Is Where We Meet’\, ‘All Power to the Imagination! 1968 & its legacies’\, and the first series devoted to Armenian cinema\, Gypsy films\, J.G.Ballard and Paul Celan. DESCRIPTION:Private view & artist talk: 16 November 2021\, 6 pm \nAn outdoor exhibition of the work of Czech street photographer and worldwide ambassador for FUJIFILM David Gaberle captures everyday Prague’s streets. Following his critically applauded Metropolight project in which he explored world cities from London to Tokyo\, Gaberle turned his camera on his native city of Prague. After covering more than 2000 km of streets and six months in making the result is a subjective\, almost intimate documentation of Prague offering an untraditional view of places away from the hustle and bustle of tourists. \nComprehensive artist statement by David Gaberle for his photographic exhibition:\n“Taking photographs while travelling is often an easy endeavour because everything seems new and exciting. However\, the novelty is seductive\, and we tend to exoticise what we see and perceive. As a result\, the photographs tend to say more about us as visitors than about the places we are trying to portray.\nWhen I returned to live in Prague\, I focused my camera on the cityscape outside of the city’s historical centre. I walked many of the same streets repeatedly in the hope that I would learn to find the seemingly mundane and ordinary to be interesting. After a few months\, I stopped wishing for extraordinary moments to happen in front of my lens\, and I started to notice the textures\, the subtle tones of colours and the rhythm of objects in the camera’s frame. I slowly began to see the city as a collage of shapes and colours. It felt like progress\, yet I still cannot shake off the feeling that I am not looking at Prague entirely my way.\nOften\, I think that everything the camera and the eye perceive is simply a reflection of light that bounces off the surface. The implication seems to be that we never really see things for what they are.
