SUMMARY:Holocaust Memorial Day: The Hungarian Dressmaker
DESCRIPTION:Marika\, a Hungarian widow dressmaker\, shelters a little Czech Jewish boy in her home on the Slovak-Hungarian border during the turbulent years of WW2 and the Wartime Slovak State. Based on Peter Krištúfek’s novel Emma and the Death’s Head and inspired by true events\, the screening marks the Holocaust Memorial Day. \n\nIt’s the 1940s. The Slovak state witnessed the rise of nationalism\, and it’s not an auspicious time for minorities. The turbulent social mood also impacts the widow Marika\, who loses her job in an Aryanised dressmaker’s shop. Given the increasing anti-Hungarian sentiment\, she shuts herself away\, particularly since she is also harbouring a little Jewish boy. Despite this\, she still finds herself singled out by two men: a German Nazi officer and a captain of Slovakia’s Hlinka Guard. This drama by Slovak director Iveta Grófová is an adaptation of the novella by Peter Krištúfek\, which conjures up the dramatic atmosphere of wartime Slovakia. DESCRIPTION:Markéta Slaná is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores digital landscape and the compulsion to consume excessive amounts of negative digital content. She investigates the psychology of dissociation\, alienation\, and post-ironic detachment through the practice based in installation and performance. The exhibition captures the essence of Kafka’s surreal universe from the solitary figure of K. with his pilgrim’s stick to the ethereal presence of the chateau looming in the clouds. \n\n  \nAbout Franz Kafka\nFranz Kafka was born in 1883 in Prague\, and his name is a symbol of Prague’s German-language literature\, which artistically reflects the unique cultural and social atmosphere of centuries of coexistence among Czechs\, Germans\, and Jews in the Central European region. Kafka’s work resonates globally with its timelessness. His books mirror not only the uncertainty and variability of his time but\, above all\, his inner conflict\, giving his work a very specific character. \nKafka’s perception of societal changes at the turn of the twentieth century and his sensitivity as a person and writer make his creations timeless. We constantly return to his texts\, which warn us against falling into lethargy and urge us not to accept the absurdities of the era passively. However\, much more is to be found in his work\, which often depends on how the reader interprets and understands the text. \nFranz Kafka wrote several short stories and three novels—America\, The Trial\, and The Castle\, which remains unfinished. The year 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of his death\, when he was just 41. \nAbout Jaromír 99\nJaromír 99\, whose real name is Jaromír Švejdík\, was born in 1963 in Czechoslovakia and moves between the worlds of comics and music. He is a composer\, singer\, guitarist\, the frontman of the Kafka Band\, and an artist. The series of prints created by Jaromír 99 in 2013 for a comic adaptation of the novel „The Castle“ are expressive black and white prints\, first exhibited in 2020 as part of the Franz Kafka Festival in Frýdlantsko. SUMMARY:Women in Focus: Míla Fürstová
DESCRIPTION:Czech Centre’s Women in Focus series continues before the summer with a talk by the internationally acclaimed Czech-British artist Míla Fürstová. \nDuring her talk\, Míla will share her journey from communist Czechoslovakia to the United Kingdom\, and her professional transition to art. She will discuss the challenges she encountered during her studies and early stages of her professional artistic career\, her collaboration with Coldplay’s Chris Martin and the influence motherhood has had on her artistic work. Last but not least\, Míla will talk about her most recent exhibition projects in Czechia and her work in public spaces in London. \n  \nARTIST’S STATEMENT: \n‚My work is an intimate portrayal of the human soul explored through the medium of etching\, expressed in a distinctly female voice. \nThe content is inspired by universal and personal mythologies. The work is poetic and often narrative in its nature and reads as both contemporary and timeless. I cut\, fold and overlay my works\, often printing on glass or other transparent surfaces thus creating imagery that is multidimensional in terms of both form and meaning. \nThe feminine voice of my work is tactile and urgent\, fragile yet strong\, gentle yet enquiring. At times it floats weightlessly above the labyrinth of being a woman at other times it delves into the darkest corners of the female psyche. \nThe technique of etching uniquely reflects and informs the spirit of my work. I draw with a needle onto a plate\, allowing the image to quietly grow\, whilst a fragile silver line emerges from a dark background as if a distant memory was traced from the unconscious. The initial image undergoes metamorphosis as the alchemical process of etching progresses through each of its stages.‘\n–  Míla Fürstová \n  \nAdmission: £5 (+ Eventbrite fee) \n  \nABOUT MÍLA FÜRSTOVÁ \nOver the past decade Míla Fürstová has exhibited in over 20 solo shows in many countries including Britain\, the USA\, France and the Czech Republic. During this time she has won numerous awards and her work has featured in many international publications. Prestigious private and public collections including the Royal Collection\, the V&A and The Museum of London have acquired her work. \nBorn in Czechoslovakia\, Fürstová gained an MA degree in Art\, English Language and Psychology at the Charles University in Prague whilst simultaneously studying for her BA degree in Fine Art Printmaking at the University of Gloucestershire. In 2001\, Fürstová received her Masters degree at the Royal College of Art and has subsequently lectured at Coventry University and The University of Gloucestershire \nIn 2014 Fürstová’s work reached over 400 million people when she was commissioned to make the artwork for Coldplay’s Ghost Stories album and four singles. In 2015 the sale of her Coldplay artwork raised over £100\,000 in aid of children’s charities. \nThe largest retrospective of Míla Fürstová’s work to date is currently on show at The Museum of Easter Bohemia in Hradec Králové\, a city Míla grew up in. The Secret of Subtleties or Homecomings (Taj jemnosti aneb Návraty domů) remains open till 27 October 2024. \nMíla’s large-scale installation ‚Motherhood‘ can be found in London’s Marylebone Road\, commemorating the old Queen Charlotte’s Lying-In Hospital\, one of the first hospitals to provide medical care to unmarried women. SUMMARY:Vladimir 518: Rethinking Architectural Narratives in Czech Architecture 1958 -1989
DESCRIPTION:Organised as part of this year’s London Festival of Architecture\, this event will see Czech visual artist and musician Vladimir 518 discussing his seminal publication ‚Architecture 58 – 89‘. \nWhile post-war architecture from the former Eastern Bloc is highly regarded by foreign architects and students\, its perception in the Czech Republic is marked by considerable ambiguity. Often\, it is negatively labelled as communist architecture of low value\, deemed highly ideological\, and seen as in need of replacement. Utilising two significant milestones—Expo 58 in Brussels and the 1989 Velvet Revolution— Vladimir 518 will reassess the Czech and Slovak architectural landscape during this period with the aim to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation in order to reset the perspective of the general public and preserve those landmarks for future generations. \n  \n‚The overwhelming body of so-called communist architecture has little in common with this ideology in terms of its formal aspects\, yet a layer of negative emotions and misunderstanding still clings to it. Unfortunately\, in the long term it has been impossible to find a healthy relationship with this now historical architecture\, which is why one important building after another is disappearing from the streets of our cities. SUMMARY:A Scent of Zeros and Ones: Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Czech artist and researcher Tereza Stehlíková will discuss her artistic practice concerned with the role our senses play in aesthetic experience. The talk will include a screening of a selected number of the artist’s short films and will be followed by a discussion with Sandra Gaudenzi\, an internationally acknowledged authority in the field of interactive and immersive documentary practice and professor Charles Spence\, an internationally renowned experimental psychologist with a specialization in neuroscience-inspired multisensory design. \n  \nSince 2005 Stehlíková’s work has been concerned with exploring the relationship between touch and audio-visual media which she uses in her film practice. Inspired by Czech artist Jan Švankmajer\, she embarked on a practice-based PhD at the Royal College of Art (2008-12). She subsequently expanded her interest to also include smell and taste. Her work has led her to a number of cross-disciplinary collaborations with chefs\, experimental psychologists and philosophers of perception\, resulting in immersive\, multi-sensory performances and short films. \nThe Covid pandemic became a catalyst for Stehlíková to start to question more deeply the increasingly more complex relationship between the digital technologies which now extend our perception and mediate our relationship to the outside world and others. In 2020 she launched her cross-disciplinary Tangible Territory journal\, where she invites artists\, philosophers and scientists to discuss the above-mentioned themes. \nStehlíková is also engaged in developing interactive performances which help to return participants to the here and now\, into their own body\, as a counter balance to the screen-based lives. The latest one of these was The Infra-Ordinary Lab\, which was developed specifically for Prague Quadrennial 2023 and explored Holešovicka Tržnice\, a market in Prague. \nThe event is organised by the Czech Centre. \n

With striking black-and-white cinematography\, the film refrains from imposing judgment\, allowing the raw footage to speak for itself.\nScreened as part of the Czech Centre’s Czech Documentary Now series. \nAbout the directors and the producer\nVít Klusák is a well known Czech director who with Filip Remunda shot the prize-winning film Czech Dream about a fictional supermarket in 2003. Since than he has directed many movies including Caught in the Net (2020)\, White World according to Daliborek (2017) and One Second Forever (2021) \nMarika Pecháčková studied photography and journalism before she finally realised that documentary film was the place from which she wanted to watch and understand the world. Her fundamental structures of thinking come from psychology and her personal experience with psychotherapy. Filmography: Rest Now \nPavla Klimešová is a producer based in the Czech Republic who studied film production at FAMU. She produced Caught in the Net\, an award-winning documentary by the directing duo Vít Klusák & Barbora Chalupová about child abuse online and Barbora’s next film The Law of Love about same sex marriages in Czechia. She is now developing Marika Pecháčková’s debut Runaway.

DESCRIPTION:Czech Centre’s popular Women in Focus series presents a very special speaker this February: Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines. During her talk\, Lady Milena will share her life-long experiences including her recollection of WWII and Nicholas Winton’s Kindertransport from Prague to London\, her early days in a new country and her rich professional career that led her from business to education and charity work. Lady Milena will also discuss her first memorable encounter with Sir Nicholas Winton at BBC studios and how their relationships gradually evolved into a genuine friendship. \n\n\n\nABOUT LADY MILENA GRENFELL-BAINES \n\n\n\nBorn Milena Fleischmannová in Prague\, young Milena grew up in the Chrudim district in a family with close ties to the Czech artistc scene. When she was three\, Milena’s mother died in childbirth and her father soon remarried. In July of 1939\, nine-year-old Milena and her three-year-old half sister left Prague on what became the last kinder transport train to the United Kingdom organised by Nicholas Winton. The girls stayed with a foster family in Ashton-under-Lyne and Milena attended a local school there before moving on to attend The Czechoslovak State School established by the Czech government in exile in Llanwrtyd Wells\, Wales. \n\n\n\nAfter the war\, Milena trained as a children’s nurse and in 1954 married British architect and urban planner Sir George Grenfell-Baines. Following a brief holiday in France\, Lady Milena’s career took a different turn when she was offered a role as a cookery interpreter\, starting her long career in the cookery business. Known to many as ‘Lady Remoska’\, Milena is credited for introducing the Czech cook pan Remoska to the British market. \n\n\n\nAnother significant event in Lady Milena’s life was her meeting with Sir Nicholas Winton during the BBC Programme ‘That’s Life’. Disclosing Winton’s involvement in the saving of 669 children from Czechoslovakia before the outbreak of WW2\, the programme arranged for many of those children to attend the live screening\, Milena being one of them. \n\n\n\nThroughout her life\, Lady Milena has been actively involved in Czech-British cultural and social relations and pursued her life-long interest in classical music. She has been awarded a number of honours both in Czechia and the UK\, including the Jan Masaryk Gratias Agit and MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire). DESCRIPTION:Our popular Women in Focus series is set to continue after the summer with a talk by the world-renowned\, Czech-born architect Eva Jiřičná. During the talk\, Ms Jiřičná\, who is best known for her shop interiors and residential projects\, will discuss her signature glass staircases and the limits of structural engineering as well as her most recent projects and the need for sustainable architecture. \n\n\n\nFurthermore\, the talk will touch on the topics such as the importance of public spaces\, green living and the regeneration of city suburbs. Using her 50+ years of experience in the field\, Ms Jiřičná will compare how various challenges are approached in different parts of the world\, and she will give a brief overview of the changing tasks architects have faced in the last 40-50 years.  \n\n\n\nThe final part of the evening will allow enough time for questions from the audience to open a lively discussion on architecture\, urbanism\, and beyond.  \n\n\n\nAbout Eva Jiřičná \n\n\n\nEva Jiřičná\, a Czech-born architect based in London since 1968\, completed her architectural education at The Technical University in Prague\, where she qualified with a title of an Engineer-Architect and later on at The Academy of Fine Arts\, where she completed her Masters degree. After the Russian Invasion\, she remained in England – she worked on the Brighton Marina project and on Lloyd’s Building and started her own practice in 1982.  \n\n\n\nEva became well known for the interiors of shops and residential projects and mainly glass staircases but also for her work at the Victoria and Albert Museum\, Canada Water Bus Station\, Leicester Library\, Orangery at Prague’s Castle and many others. She opened with a Czech partner Petr Vágner another practice AI DESIGN in Prague in 1999 and completed many projects there\, including hotels\, University buildings\, Multipurpose Auditorium\, amongst others.  \n\n\n\nEva has been appointed Professor and has a long teaching experience. She is a member of the Royal Academy of Arts\, the Royal Designer for Industry\, and an honorary member of the Royal Society of Arts. She has been awarded by CBE and received 11 honorary doctorates. Recently she has been awarded the Ambassador of the Czech Republic by the Czech Top 100 and Lifetime Achievement Medal by the London Design Festival.

DESCRIPTION:A masterful cinematic adventure of a truly forensic nature that uses newly discovered footage to provide a unique perspective on the 1968 military invasion of Czechoslovakia and its aftermath. \n\n\n\nThe discovery of 3 ½ hours of previously unseen\, professionally shot footage of the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia that had been sitting in a garage for more than 40 years triggered a project reconstructing events that took place 55 years ago. Director Jan Sikl\, known for his meticulous work with private family film archives\, used an open call broadcast on Czech Television to trace the people’s identities and locations depicted in the footage and acquire further authentic film material.  Memories of specific events spring to life\, and what starts out as an investigation gradually becomes a reflection of how a historical moment has imprinted itself on us all.  The resulting film combines found professional and amateur footage with 18 interviews with those both behind and in front of the camera during that time while documenting Sikl‘s investigative work. SUMMARY:The Trial: Prague 1952 + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:In Prague in 2018\, workers find in an abandoned warehouse film reels that had been hidden there since the fall of the Berlin Wall. These are the images of the Slánský Trial\, which in 1952 was a summit of Stalinist terror and anti-Semitism: a macabre production in which 14 top leaders of the Communist regime\, most of them Jews\, were accused of imaginary crimes and forced\, through torture and threats\, to make a public confession of their guilt\, which was also imaginary. 11 of them were sentenced to death and hanged. \n\n\n\nWith the help of these recently restored exceptional archives and a dive into the archives of the secret police\, Ruth Zylberman went to meet these broken families in order to retrace the complex trajectory of three of these men\, Rudolf Slánský\, Artur London and Rudolf Margolius. Three communists\, three men destroyed by a world they had helped to build and where the lie that became the law managed to subvert\, beyond the political field\, the most elementary bonds of human society right down to its most intimate entrenchments. \n\n\n\nRuth Zylberman is a filmmaker and author. He was born in Prague\, Czechoslovakia and studied architecture both there and in London following his arrival in the UK in 1966. He has worked for Foster and Partners\, Skidmore\, Owings and Merrill and Yorke Rosenberg Mardall.

DESCRIPTION:Czech Centre London’s series Women in Focus continues with Daria Klimentová\, a photographer\, ballet teacher and world-renowned Prima Ballerina. Having spent most of her career as a lead principal dancer at English National Ballet\, Daria will discuss her successful professional journey from her ballet beginnings in Communist Czechoslovakia through her peak time as a dancer to her retirement and change of career direction. She will share what it takes to get to the top (and remain there)\, reveal the backstage struggles of a ballerina\, and whether it is possible to combine a busy career with family life. \n\n\n\nFollowed by a Q&A session with the audience. \n\n\n\nAbout the speaker: \n\n\n\nAfter graduating from the Prague State Conservatory of Music and Dance in 1989\, Daria Klimentovájoined National Theatre Ballet in Prague as a soloist and was promoted to the principal dancer a year later. In 1992\, she joined Cape Town City Ballet in South Africa as principal. The following year\, she joined the Scottish Ballet as a principal dancer. In 1996\, Klimentová joined the English National Ballet at the invitation of then-artistic director Derek Deane. Since 2003 Daria has been the founder and Director of the Prague International Ballet Masterclasses held at the magnificent studios of the National Theatre Company in Prague. \n\n\n\nIn March 2013\, Daria published her autobiography\, Daria Klimentova – Agony and Ecstasy: My Life in Dance. In 2014 she finished training as a teacher at The Royal Ballet School and joined the teaching staff there in September 2014 following her retirement as a ballet dancer. \n\n\n\nAdmission: FREE \n\n\n\nREGISTER NOW

DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the bilingual publication of The Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible\, Czech poet and architect Pavla Melková and leading British sculptor Antony Gormley meet on stage to continue an artistic dialogue that started six years ago in Prague when they first met\, and the idea of a joint book was born. In The Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible Pavla\, Melková’s poetry meets Antony Gormley’s drawings\, circling the same centre and unfolding from the same horizon in their search for the essence of life\, to emerge in a common language. \n\n\n\nAntony Gormley’s images and a staged reading of Pavla Melková’s poems by translator and poet Joshua Mensch will accompany the launch of this bilingual edition. \n\n\n\nFollowed by audience Q&A and a book signing. \n\n\n\nPAVLA MELKOVÁ is a practising architect\, visual artist\, poet and writer who regularly lectures on art and architecture. Her widely-recognized architecture is visible throughout the Czech Republic\, where she has won numerous awards\, including Architect of the Year (2014)\, the Prague Mayor’s Prize (2012)\, and the National Prize for Architecture (2012). She has published seven books on architecture\, including most recently\, The Humanistic Role of Architecture (2016) and The Architecture of Reciprocity (2020). She is a regular contributor to professional architecture journals\, anthologies\, and collaborative works. Her two volumes of poetry include The Edges of the Day (2017) and Inner Time (2019). In 2012\, she founded the Office for Public Space at the Institute for Planning and Development of the City of Prague (IPR)\, which she headed until 2017. She is a member and vice-chair of the Gremial Council of IPR and is a partner at the architecture firm MCA atelier\, which she co-founded. In 2015\, she founded the course Concept and Interpretation at the Faculty of Architecture\, where she teaches. \n\n\n\nANTONY GORMLEY is widely acclaimed for his sculptures\, installations and public artworks investigating the human body’s relationship to space. His work has developed the potential opened up by sculpture since the 1960s through a critical engagement with both his own body and those of others in a way that confronts fundamental questions of where human being stands about nature and the cosmos. Gormley continually tries to identify the space of art as a place of becoming in which new behaviours\, thoughts and feelings can arise. Gormley’s work has been widely exhibited throughout the UK and internationally. A major solo exhibition of his work was presented at the Royal Academy of Arts\, London\, in September 2019. Permanent public works include the Angel of the North (Gateshead\, England)\, Another Place (Crosby Beach\, England)\, Inside Australia (Lake Ballard\, Western Australia)\, Exposure (Lelystad\, The Netherlands) and Chord (MIT – Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, Cambridge\, MA\, USA). \n\n\n\nGormley was awarded the Turner Prize in 1994\, the South Bank Prize for Visual Art in 1999\, the Bernhard Heiliger Award for Sculpture in 2007\, the Obayashi Prize in 2012 and the Praemium Imperiale in 2013. In 1997 he was made an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) and a knight in the New Year’s Honours list in 2014. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects\, an Honorary Doctor of the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Trinity and Jesus Colleges\, Cambridge. Gormley has been a Royal Academician since 2003. \n\n\n\nJOSHUA MENSCH is a poet and translator based in the Czech Republic. He is the author of Because. A Lyric Memoir (W. W. Norton\, 20218). He has served as an editor of B O D Y since 2012. \n\n\n\nThe Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible is a discourse between the languages of poetry and the visual arts. The book captures a dialogue between leading British sculptor Anthony Gormley and Czech poet Pavla Melková. The lines made by the words in the poems and lines of the drawings are traces that bring closer the shape of the essence – the essence of the world\, our lives\, relationships\, and situations. The strokes of the words of the poetry and the strokes of the lines of the drawings circle the same centre and unfold from the same horizon. When the marks cross paths\, the shape becomes more and more evident. Absorbed in the strokes and with developing awareness\, one mutual language emerges. DESCRIPTION:Art historian\, writer and curator of the Modern and Contemporary Art Collection at the National Gallery Prague\, Monika Čejková\, will open our new talk series\, Women in Focus. Monika will discuss her interest in contemporary art\, which paved her journey to becoming an author and curator. She will also describe her recent projects\, mostly dealing with the notion and modification of art in the digital age. Specifically\, she will talk about the philosophy of new technologies\, artificial intelligence\, cyberculture and the topics of the post-gender world\, post-humanism and digisexuality. \n\n\n\nMonika’s talk will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience. \n\n\n\nAbout the speaker: \n\n\n\nMonika Čejková is a curator of the next Fotograf Festival 2023: #Hypertension23 at National Gallery Prague and Ora et lege II at Broumov Monastery\, 2023.
