SUMMARY:They All Met in Karlsbad & Poet Peasant - JOINT PRIVATE VIEW
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate two exhibitions in one evening at our joint Private View: They All Met in Karlsbad\, showcasing bold Czech artists in dialogue\, and Poet Peasant by SJ Fowler\, where poetry takes visual\, sculptural form. A unique meeting of material exploration\, literary experimentation\, and creative freedom. All welcome! \nTHEY ALL MET IN KARLSBAD \nDuring the summer\, the Czech Centre’s Vitrínka Gallery presents a group exhibition showcasing recent works by eight emerging Czech artists from the 2024 Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) residencies. Their cross-disciplinary pieces reflect the town’s rich heritage and spirit of collaboration. \nThe Magnus Art Gallery in Prague launched its residency programme after gaining access to an elegant apartment in an Art Nouveau palace in Karlovy Vary. Designed for two artists at a time\, the residency fosters dialogue between disciplines and encourages creative exchange. \nIn 2024\, seven artist pairs took part\, often blending media—glass with textiles\, sculpture with painting. The town’s distinctive spa town atmosphere and layered history became a powerful source of inspiration. \nInitially shown at the palace’s Display Gallery and later in Prague\, a selection of these pieces now comes to London’s Vitrínka Gallery\, offering a glimpse into how young Czech art flourishes when given space and freedom to experiment. \nArtists exhibiting in London\nAnežka Hošková & Jakub Hošek\nAnežka Hošková’s paintings reflect her romantic vision of Karlovy Vary’s churches\, landscapes\, and mineral springs\, merging meditative experiences with watercolour techniques. Jakub Hošek responded to the city’s uneasy history\, blending beautiful and dark elements into stitched compositions filled with texts\, emotions and urban fragments. \nKaríma Al-Mukhtarová & TEA\nKaríma Al-Mukhtarová explored the transformative symbolism of bathing in a monumental tapestry\, capturing the moment between death\, acceptance and rebirth. TEA created a sculpture of a scribe inspired by Egyptian aesthetics\, integrating fragments of Karíma’s tapestry into the work\, reflecting on shared experience and artistic imprint. \nAnna Jožová & Lucie Rosická\nAnna Jožová and Lucie Rosická investigated materials tied to Karlovy Vary’s nature and culture. Jožová’s luminous glass objects engaged in dialogue with Rosická’s embroidered textiles\, as both artists inspired each other to cross creative and material boundaries\, exchanging insights from their differing practices. \nNéphéli Barbas & Jakub Tytykalo\nNéphéli Barbas was drawn to the city’s layered architecture and forested surroundings\, translating these into sculptural forms of bent aluminium. Jakub Tytykalo created a unique series of paintings exploring the inner energy of underground springs\, blending elemental forces in vibrant\, otherworldly compositions. \nEXHIBITION OPENING\nWith artists Karíma Al-Mukhtarová & TEA\nFriday 11 July 2025\, 6.30 – 8.30 pm\nFree entry \nEXHIBITION DATES: 11 July – 31 August 2025 \nVENUE\nVitrínka Gallery\, Czech Centre London\n30 Kensington Palace Gardens\, London\, W8 4QY \nOPENING HOURS:\nTue – Fri 10am – 5pm\nor by appointment – +44 (0) 207 836 3669 \nOrganised by Czech Centre London in partnership with Magnus Art Gallery and J&T Bank. \nPart of From Karlovy Vary\, With Art. \n———————- \nPOET PEASANT: AN EXHIBITION BY SJ FOWLER \nAn exhibition of poetry as curios\, discovered text and found literary sculptures drawn from previously unseen works\, selected asemic writing and the poetic props of performances across the globe. Drawing from fifteen years of rabid activity\, this exhibition evidences the breadth of visual and conceptual poetry from one of the definitive experimentalists of the British 21st century literary scene. \nOn the site of the former Notting Hill Books\, a formative space for many\, including Fowler\, this exhibition emphasises the potential of the marginal\, peculiar\, detritus-as-poetry mode so removed from the medium’s stereotypical obsession with neatness\, craft and clarity. From bear suits to homemade skeletons\, handwritten novels to concrete poems\, Poet Peasant represents the core aesthetic concerns of SJ Fowler – playful\, eclectic and anti-singular\, it is a deliberate mess of fun and weird visual literature that stretches the bounds of what poetry is. \nwww.stevenjfowler.com/poetpeasant \nSJ Fowler is a writer\, poet and performer who lives in London. His work has been commissioned by The National Gallery\, Tate Modern\, BBC Radio 3\, Somerset House\, Tate Britain\, Southbank Centre and he was part of the first Hub residency at Wellcome Collection. His visual poetry has been exhibited at the V&A\, Hayward Gallery\, Jerwood Space\, Mile End Art Pavilion\, Kielder Forest\, Tate St Ives and Palais de Tokyo. He has published over 50 works\, the subject of the Small Publishers Fair 2022 feature exhibition and given over 400 performances at venues around the world. He lecturer at Kingston University and is the director of the European Poetry Festival. Poet Peasant … is his 8th solo exhibition. \nEXHIBITION DATES: 11 July – 5 August 2025 \nVENUE\nBouda Gallery\, Czech Centre London\n132 Palace Gardens Terrace\, London W8 4RT \nPRIVATE VIEW: Friday 11 July 2025. 6.30 – 8.30 pm \nOPENING HOURS:\nThe gallery will be opened to the public 12 noon to 5pm every Wednesday to Saturday \nACCOMPANYING EVENTS:\nJuly 24th July 26th\, July 31st\, August 2nd 7pm – 9pm.

SUMMARY:28th Made in Prague Festival in London
DESCRIPTION:The Made in Prague Festival returns to the UK capital\, showcasing the best contemporary Czech culture in many central London venues throughout November. This year\, the popular multifaceted festival reflects the Year of Czech Music with fantastic classical and jazz concerts\, celebrates a centenary of the legacy of Franz Kafka through the means of visual art\, literature\, film and performance\, and remembers the 35th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution with a UK premiere of a new documentary about the dissident playwright turn President Václav Havel. \n  \nKeeping in line with the Year of Czech Music\, the festival opens on 31 October with a performance by the London Symphony Orchestra playing contemporary classical music by Ondřej Adámek at the Barbican. The concert will commence a five-week programme showcasing various cultural events\, culminating in the festival’s closing night on 30 November at the Southbank Centre\, featuring world-renowned Czech violinist Pavel Šporcl accompanied by the English Chamber Orchestra. His performance promises to be a spectacular conclusion to this musical journey\, embodying Czech music’s dynamic and timeless spirit. \nThe festival also commemorates one hundred years since the death of Franz Kafka\, one of the most influential literary figures of the 20th century. Born in Prague\, Kafka’s work\, filled with existential themes and deep alienation\, inspires readers worldwide. This year\, the festival honours his legacy through a dance performance at the Coronet Theatre\, a literary evening and an open-air exhibition. \nA core component of the Made in Prague Festival remains its dedication to showcasing contemporary Czech cinema. This year’s film programme is particularly exciting\, with screenings of films such as Brothers\, the Czech nomination for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film; She Came at Night\, the Czech Lion Award winner for both Best Director and Best Actress in a leading role; and Waltzing Matilda\, followed by a Q&A with the film’s leading actor Karel Roden\, offering UK audiences a window into the diverse and innovative world of modern Czech filmmaking. \nTo remember the 35th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution\, the festival honours the leading figure of the revolution\, the dissident playwright turn President Václav Havel\, with the UK premiere of Petr Jančárek’s Havel Speaking\, Can you Hear Me? Screened at the ICA on 14 November. On Havel’s invitation\, the filmmaker was granted unlimited access and creative freedom to capture the last few years of Havel’s life\, resulting in an extraordinary time-lapse documentary reflecting on Havel’s political legacy and universal human issues with absolute openness through previously unseen footage. \nFor those unable to attend live screenings and debates at the cinema\, the festival has teamed up with the BFI Player to introduce three Czech Classics for free as part of the 3 You Must See programme. Featuring Otakar Vávra’s iconic Witchhammer\, Miloš Forman’s 1963 debut Audition\, and Oldřich Lipský’s musical parody Lemonade Joe (aka Horse Opera). \nFull festival programme: https://bit.ly/28thMadeInPragueFestival \n

SUMMARY:A New History of Theresienstadt with Dr Anna Hájková
DESCRIPTION:Dr Anna Hájková\, Associate Professor at the University of Warwick\, talks about her newly published book about Terezín / Theresienstadt. The Last Ghetto offers both a modern history of this Central European ghetto and the first in-depth analytical history of a prison society during the Holocaust. The event will be chaired by Francois Guesnet\, Professor of Modern Jewish History in the Department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at University College\, London. \nTheresienstadt was operated by the Nazis between November 1941 and May 1945 as a transit ghetto for Central and Western European Jews before their deportation for murder in the East. Today\, Theresienstadt is best known for the Nazi propaganda of the International Red Cross visit\, cultural life\, and children. But these aspects explain little what defined the lives of its 140\,000 inmates. \nThe prison society of Terezín produced its own social hierarchies under which even small differences among prisoners decided their fate. During the three and a half years of the camp’s existence\, prisoners created their own culture and habits\, bonded\, fell in love\, and forged new families. Based on extensive archival research in nine languages and on empathetic reading of victim testimonies\, The Last Ghetto casts light on human society works in extremis. \nOrganised by the Czech Centre London in collaboration with JW3. \nOnline via Zoom\, free event\, reservation necessary: http://bit.ly/Theresienstadt-booking\nA Zoom link to join this event will be included in the confirmation email upon booking.\nMore info: http://bit.ly/Theresienstadt-more-info

SUMMARY:Havel
DESCRIPTION:New biopic contrasting Václav Havel’s moral stand as a human rights activist with his flawed private life\, buiding up a captivating portrayal of the man who has become an icon.UK Premiere. \n\n\n\nDir. Slávek Horák\, Czech Republic 2020\, English subtitlesCast: Viktor Dvořák\, Anna Geislerová\, Martin Hofmann\, Barbora Seidlová \n\n\n\nHavel\, up close and personal: such is the new biopic by director Slávek Horák of the critically esteemed Home Care. Focusing on the period 1968 – 1989 and Havel´s personal life\, Horák explores Havel´s metamorphosis from internationally celebrated but persecuted playwright to banned and jailed human rights defender and finally to president of Czechoslovakia. But it is his relationship with his first wife Olga\, suffering from her husband’s infidelities\, that is at the centre of the story. Situations from his life such as the secret police witnessing his failed attempt to resolve a love tringle in a restaurant mirror his absurdist plays\, provide humour and emotion while Horák’s imaginative use of actual theatre settings to stage key moments from Havel’s confrontations with communist power document his public persona. An excellent cast including Viktor Dvořák capturing Havel’s moments of uncertainty and weakness\, and Anna Geislerová as direct and decisive Olga\, complement a portrayal depicting not an icon but a flawed man who steps out of his comfort zone to become politically engaged. Watch out for news footage from Havel’s life under the end credits including the Rolling Stones in Prague castle. \n\n\n\nNominated for The Czech Lions 2020 Best Actress\, Best Actor\, Best Screenplay and the Czech Film Critics Awards. \n\n\n\n“It is the personal life that helps the viewer to experience the story. Because few people can identify with being jailed or fighting against the Communists\, as Havel did. But everybody can identify with a marital crisis or relationship problems\, which Havel – like all of us – had with Olga.” Slávek Horák \n\n\n\nThe film will be available to rent (from UK only) for £6.99 from 10:00 on Sunday 1 November GMT till 10:00 on Wednesday 4 November 2020 GMT on Czech Centre Vimeo on Demand via https://vimeo.com/ondemand/havel \n\n\n\nBONUS: Q&A WITH DIRECTOR SLÁVEK HORÁK \n\n\n\nOrganised by the Czech Centre as part of Made in Prague ON/OFF Festival.

SUMMARY:AI Science Café Series 2020: Mobility - is autonomous driving an answer to reducing traffic congestion in our cities?
DESCRIPTION:Cities are overly congested with traffic and pollution. At present the most widely discussed solution is urban on-demand mobility based self-driving technology. The envisioned automated mobility-on-demand (AMoD) systems employ a centrally-controlled fleet of self-driving vehicles to provide on-demand point-to-point transportation to the users of the system. Such systems promise to revolutionise user behaviour and significantly improve the efficiency of urban transportation. As a case study\, we will discuss and quantify the potential for car-sharing and ride-sharing to reduce the number of vehicles in the city of Prague\, its application to other cities around the world and the implications for policy making. \nThe discussion after the presentation will be chaired by   Dr Panagiotis Angeloudis. \nMichal Čáp is a Technical Lead in isee AI\, an MIT spin-off company developing self-driving technology\, and a research associate in the Artificial Intelligence Centre at the Czech Technical University in Prague. He has studied information technology\, agent technology and artificial intelligence and worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, USA and the Department of Cognitive Robotics\, TU Delft\, Netherlands. Motivated by the arrival of self-driving taxi companies\, he recently became interested in the analysis of transportation systems that employ large fleets of self-driving cars. \nDr Panagiotis Angeloudis is Senior Lecturer and Director of the Transport Systems and Logistics based in the Centre for Transport Studies at Imperial College London. He also leads the Port Operations Research and Technology Centre within the Centre for Transport Studies. His work to date has spanned the areas of network optimisation\, urban transport systems\, logistics and maritime transport.  \nPart of the AI SCIENCE CAFÉ SERIES 2020\nArtificial Intelligence is the new phenomenon of the 21st century and has evolved out of the realm of science fiction and at best\, a few technologically advanced minds and IT professionals\, to everyday topics of discussion and one of the key drivers of the future progress of humankind. The objective of the  AI Science Café series\, which will consist of five presentations by high profile\, world acclaimed experts\, is to introduce\, present and publicly discuss various topics that impact our professional as well as our personal lives. As AI topics clearly generate more questions than answers\, the series will strive to unveil trends and expectations from the inevitable social and technological changes which the future will bring. \nOrganized by: Czech Centre London

SUMMARY:Havana + Q&A with director Jana Bokova and BBC producer and presenter Alan Yentob
DESCRIPTION:This extraordinary documentary about life in Cuba opens with 16mm amateur footage of Fidel Castro’s triumphant revolution in 1959 moving between the pre-revolutionary past and the volatile present of Castro’s Cuba in 1989. Featuring an interview with the exiled Cuban poet Reinaldo Arena\, and a direct inspiration for Julian Schnabel’s film Before Night Falls\, Havana consists above all of residents talking about their homes\, their city and Cuba in the midst of Havana’s dilapidated\, ruined beauty. Striking\, haunting images are punctuated by voice-over poetry by leading writers and stories of artists and ordinary Cubans\, young and old such as an elderly lady who fell through the floor in her derelict building\, a poet seeking for his identity\, and a woman who would never again see her ageing mother\, exiled in America. Full of captivating music and Bokova’s understanding of life under communism and in exile this is a wonderfully lyrical and honest homage to Havana and its people.\n> UK – BBC Arena\, 1990\, 105´\, English subtitles \nFollowed by Q&A with director Jana Bokova and BBC producer and presenter Alan Yentob \nOrganised by the CZECH CENTRE LONDON \nPart of In Focus: Jana Bokova \nThe cinema is accessible through the reception of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in London\, 26 Kensington Palace Gardens\, London W8 4QY. \nFREE ADMISSION\, RESERVATION VIA EVENTBRITE\neventbrite.co.uk/e/havana-qa-with-jana-bokova-and-alan-yentob-tickets/ \nDoors open at 18.30.\nUnreserved seating.
