In Cure director Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s modern horror classic\, spectres infest an analog world that’s rapidly giving way to a digital one. An apocalyptic\, tech-sceptic ghost story on growing disconnection and isolation in the internet age\, Pulse is routinely ranked amongst the scariest horror movies ever made and features a centrepiece scene of such uncanny terror it has been described by The AV Club’s Scott Tobias as “the signature sequence in all of J-horror”.\n\nPresented in collaboration with SciFrights Podcast\, the film will be introduced by Jasper Sharp\, a critic\, author\, filmmaker and independent scholar specialising in Japanese cinema

When Katie reveals to her boyfriend Micah that she has been haunted by an evil presence since childhood\, Micah employs an array of digital devices to try and record any strange events that might happen around their home. But when doors start slamming on their own\, a Ouija board spontaneously combusts and Katie appears to become possessed (caught in chilling time lapse)\, the couple may have got more than they bargained for. The capturing of these events gives the film a documentary feel\, but one wonders if the ghost is not just on screen but also in the machine. As the camera tracks through an impossibly unending hallway\, this repetition of phantasmagorias builds to a haunting and ultimately tragic conclusion.
