SUMMARY:USA to UK - American immigrant artists contribution to British visual culture since 1900.
DESCRIPTION:Following last year’s revealing exhibition Us: From There to Here which exhibited artworks by artists by country of birth and traced their journeys to Great Britain\, we are excited to continue the concept by curating an exhibition about the contribution of American artists who migrated to this country titled USA to UK from the Ben Uri Collection. \nThe artists include Alfred Cohen\, David Gryn\, Edward Toledano\, Howard Baer\, Jacob Epstein\, Jacqueline Morreau\, L. Michèle Franklin\, Phyllis Gorlick-King\, R. B. Kitaj and Sandra Fisher. \nWe will also be unveiling a remarkable new acquisition by George Grosz who fled the Nazi regime to find safety in New York. This new acquisition brings our collection of his WW2 works to 3 which is the strongest body of work by Grosz in all UK Museums.

SUMMARY:The Anthony Rudolf Collection: works given to him by Paula Rego.
DESCRIPTION:Ben Uri is honoured to have been selected to present a most revealing and interesting exhibition telling the story of Paula Rego and Anthony Rudolf’s 26 year relationship. Anthony was her close companion and principal male model from 1996 until the end of her life in 2022. \nThe show is beautifully illustrated through the art given by Paula to Anthony during this quarter of a century. \nThis show will exhibit over 40 works\, the vast majority never seen in public before\, and tells a different variant of well-known stories in art history about the artist\, the muse\, the model and the relationships accruing. \nAnthony Rudolf (b 1942) is a distinguished writer\, poet\, translator and ran the Menard Press. \nDame Paula\, born in Portugal in 1935\, migrated to London in 1951 and passed on the 8th June 2022. She was buried in London alongside her late husband\, the artist Victor Willing. She is survived by three children: son Nick\, daughters Cas and Victoria\, who together are the custodians of the Rego estate. \nBen Uri Gallery and Museum successfully transformed into a digitally led academic institution in 2018. Its overarching focus is on the Refugee and wide Immigrant contribution to British Art since 1900\, of which Paula Rego is a pre-eminent example alongside Frank Auerbach\, Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud. \nThis year its digital content of over 12\,000 pages through benuri.org and its extensive databases of over 3\,300 profiles through buru.org.uk will be accessed over 350\,000 times\, and usage continues to grow exponentially. \nOpen every Wednesday to Friday\, 10 am to 5.30 pm

SUMMARY:Franciszka Themerson: Stories from the Life - Early Paintings and Drawings from Warsaw and London
DESCRIPTION:The Ben Uri Research Unit (BURU) is happy to present Franciszka Themerson’s Stories from the Life. The exhibition includes paintings and drawings from her student days at the School of Fine Art in Warsaw and some of her later works in London. Most of them have never been exhibited in England. Of the early works made in Poland\, three paintings and 19 drawings were made between 1929 and 1933\, which will be shown in the main gallery. When the exhibition ends\, they will be donated to the National Museum in Warsaw. \nThe lower galleries will include works from the 1940s when Franciszka began experimenting with abstract forms and bright colours. \nEven though Franciszka Themerson illustrated and designed books\, was director of Gaberbocchus Press\, made films with her husband Stefan Themerson\, designed for the theatre\, she was primarily a painter. Her paintings developed from the very tightly crafted\, densely coloured scenes of events within interiors of the earliest works\, to later images whose meaning could be read in several different ways. The comparison is both puzzling and intriguing. \nThe exhibition is accompanied by a small catalogue of the early works\, edited by Jasia Reichardt and designed by Pedro Cid Proença.
