SUMMARY:The Zombies: Celebrating 60 Years On Tape
DESCRIPTION:THE ZOMBIES Celebrating 60 Years On Tape From “She’s Not There” to “Different Game” Plus Very Special Guests \n\n\n\nThe 2024 Tour band members are the current line-up of: Rod Argent (Keys and vocals) Colin Blunstone (Lead Vocals)\, Steve Rodford (Drums)\, Tom Toomey (Guitar) & Søren Koch (Bass) \n\n\n\nThe Zombies formed in the historic Cathedral city of St Albans in 1961 with Argent and Blunstone\, alongside Chris White (Bass)\, Paul Atkinson (Guitar) and Hugh Grundy (drums).  Their first single ‘She’s Not There’ on Decca Records\, rocketed to the top of the charts in 1964 on both sides of the pond. They were the second UK band following The Beatles to score a #1 hit in America\, infiltrating the airwaves with sophisticated melodies\, breathy vocals\, choral back-up harmonies and jazzy keyboard riffs. The original line-up disbanded just prior to achieving their greatest success – the worldwide chart-topping single ‘Time of the Season’\, from their swan-song album ‘Odessey and Oracle’\, ranked in the Top 100 of Rolling Stone’s ‘500 Greatest Albums of All Time.’  To this day\, generations of new bands have cited The Zombies’ work as pop touchstones\, and the band continues to be embraced by new generations of fans.

SUMMARY:Hamed Sinno: Poems of Consumption
DESCRIPTION:The iconic Lebanese-American indie-rock musician Hamed Sinno debuts their solo material for this year’s Shubbak Festival. \nAfter leading up the most prominent indie-rock band of the Arab world Mashrou’ Leila\, the prodigious composer returns to the stage with a new project co-commissioned by Shubbak Festival and the Barbican. \nPoems of Consumption is a literary song cycle that explores the resonances between Amazon-era consumerism\, mental illness\, unrequited love\, and environmental collapse\, without purporting to have an alternative or moral high-ground. It’s a portrait of Nero\, a desolate working-class melancholic crying at Whole Foods while the world outside comes to a boil. The compositions juxtapose the romanticism evoked by the sound of a string section\, with hyper-industrial electronica created out of the sounds of consumerism (crumpling cellophane\, bubble wrap\, unboxing\, ripping plastic) to swing between dancefloor & aural assault. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCo-commissioned by Shubbak Festival and the Barbican. Produced by MARSM. Supported by Arts Council England\, Bagri Foundation\, A.M. Qattan Foundation\, British Council\, English PEN\, and Goethe Institute.

SUMMARY:Berliner Barock Solisten and Alexandros Kapelis at the Barbican
DESCRIPTION:The Berliner Barock Solisten and pianist Alexandros Kapelis come together for Bach’s six concertos for solo keyboard and orchestra: a tour-de-force not seen on the concert stage in recent memory. \n\n\n\n\nComprised of virtuosic soloists from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra\, the Berliner Barock Solisten has created a unique approach to performing music of the 17th and 18th centuries. Tonight they’re joined by pianist Alexandros Kapelis for his Barbican debut\, giving us a rare opportunity to hear these Bach masterpieces in one go. \nA pianist who ‘plays the classics with astonishing taste’ (Martha Argerich\, Classica Magazine)\, Kapelis is the first in 17 years to record this set. Alongside the Berliner Barock Solisten\, in all their ‘precise\, polished perfection’ (Gramophone)\, we’ll hear Bach’s landmark concertos in full colour.

SUMMARY:Luzmila Carpio
DESCRIPTION:Mixing contemporary and indigenous rhythms from the Andes\, Carpio’s otherworldly soprano soars\, sounding closer to a theremin\, or the pan flutes that pepper her sound. These vocals – woven over layers of bird sound\, guitar\, woodwinds and bells – are indebted to Quechua culture; specifically\, its devotionals to the goddess Pachamama\, or Mother Earth. A testament to her boundary pushing – she has collaborated with electronic artists such as Chancha Via Circuito and Nicola Cruz. \nDubbed ‘the voice of the Andes’\, Carpio\, who was born in Potosí and sings in Quechua and Spanish\, promotes indigenous culture and heritage. She was appointed Bolivian ambassador to France from 2006 to 2010 and was honoured by the French government in 2011 as a Grand Officer of l’Ordre National du Mérite.

SUMMARY:DROWNTOWN
DESCRIPTION:Barbican online world premiere and digital tour for gritty dance-theatre show \nDouble National Dance Awards nominee Rhiannon Faith’s new show DROWNTOWN holds a mirror to a society at tipping point and is now remodelled for online presentation \nIn choreographer Rhiannon Faith’s new show DROWNTOWN\, six strangers\, weighed down by individual darkness\, come to a deprived coastal land. Seemingly abandoned\, there is no one to help but themselves. Stuck between the remains of a broken community and the vast bleakness of the sea\, they struggle with isolation\, shame and failed support systems. \nDROWNTOWN’s live world premiere was set for June 2020 at London’s Barbican. In reaction to the pandemic Faith has teamed up with award-winning Big Egg Films to create a stunning multi camera film version of the show. \nBold and brave\, the show uses autobiographical testimonials and text to give voice to the vulnerable and unheard in Britain’s areas of social deprivation. With tenderness and honesty\, the show holds up a mirror to a society at tipping point. DROWNTOWN arrives to help save our world from drowning. \nRhiannon Faith explained ‘DROWNTOWN was made with a hope to heal a broken world. With the profound loneliness and isolation many have experienced during the lockdowns I really didn’t want to delay the opportunity for people to see it. As communities start to put their lives back together\, this show is asking that everyone is included in the process\, and there is authentic belonging for all.’ \nThe World Premiere will be hosted by London’s Barbican on 1 June 2021 at 7pm. Watch via the Barbican website at https://www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2021/event/rhiannon-faith-company-drowntown-film\nJoin the creator/Director and cast on Facebook at 8:45 for a live Q&A after the show. \nThe Barbican will then host the film to watch on demand until 6 June. DROWNTOWN will then tour digitally through June with runs hosted by Cambridge Junction\, Gulbenkian Canterbury\, Ipswich Dance East and Harlow Playhouse. See a trailer here. \nIn the 2021 National Dance Awards Rhiannon Faith Company has been nominated for Best Independent Company\, and Rhiannon for Best Digital Choreography for her work on the DROWNTOWN ‘prequel’ DROWNTOWN LOCKDOWN.\nWatch the 17 minute film here. \nDROWNTOWN was named in the Evening Standard’s eight ‘Best dance shows to see in 2020’. \nIn The Observer dance critic and Killing Eve author Luke Jennings said of Rhiannon’s last show\, Smack That ( a conversation) ‘raw and eloquent with a final note of hope’ while The Guardian described it as ‘a party game to help change the world. The Stage hailed it as ‘Inventive\, demanding and immersive\, a work of urgent importance’ \n‘So many communities are broken\, people are drowning\, so something must be going wrong\,’ added Rhiannon. ‘Even Covid19 hasn’t really restarted the conversations with the wounds and emotions being effectively pushed down to the sea-bed. I want to reopen those conversations urgently’. \nPerformed by a cast of six (Shelley Eva Haden\, Donald Hutera\, Dom Coffey\, Sam Ford\, Marla King\, Finetta Oliver-Mikolajska) the show shines a light on individual suffering and discusses loneliness\, social isolation\, bereavement and suicide. Suitable for over 16s\, it contains strong language and scenes that some may find upsetting. \n1-6 June\nLondon Barbican Centre Silk Street EC2Y 8DS\n£pay what you feel\nhttps://www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2021/event/rhiannon-faith-company-drowntown-film \nRhiannon Faith Company is the sector leader in professional and participatory socially conscious dance-theatre that has a lasting impact on audiences and participants. SUMMARY:Marcel & Rami Khalifé
DESCRIPTION:Revered oud player Marcel Khalifé reinvents his much-loved music with his son Rami and French jazz drummer Aymeric Westrich. \nThis is Khalifé as you’ve never seen him – stripped back from the large ensemble he usually performs with. Played on just oud\, piano and drums\, we hear his songs in a new way\, as the heart of their melody and meaning are revealed anew. Inspired by contemporary poetry\, Khalifé’s songs promote traditional Arabic music\, bringing it into new contexts and continually finding a fresh relevance. \nAn exciting young composer\, having followed his father into music\, Rami Khalifé has performed internationally and been commissioned by a variety of ensembles. Sharing an experimental outlook\, he has collaborated with Aymeric Westrich on his brother\, Bachar Mar-Khalifé’s album Oil Slick\, mixing traditional Arabic sounds with jazz and electronics.

SUMMARY:Le Trio Joubran
DESCRIPTION:Oud masters and innovators Le Trio Joubran perform music from a career spanning fifteen years including their anticipated new album The Long March. \nFrom a family steeped in Arabic music\, the three brothers Samir\, Wissam and Adnan Joubran have been touring the world with their ouds for the past fifteen years. Through their mesmerizing songs they attempt to honour the struggles and oppression of indigenous peoples around the world\, and see their music as part of the Palestinian people’s effort for recognition. The three brothers form a trio\, a rare thing in oud music\, and it’s through the oud\, or Arabic lute which they have become one. \nTheir new record The Long March is a landmark for the band\, continuing to combine musical worlds with collaborations from Roger Waters and poet Mahmoud Darwish. Rock solos meet synths and Arabic verse; brooding and beautiful\, contemplative and joyous.
