SUMMARY:Live Theatre in London - The Sunday Art Club: Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Live Theatre in London – The Sunday Art Club: Sessions – Funk\, Hip Hop beats\, visual art\, poetry readings and a headline gig from highly renowned Jazz Musicians.\n \nThe Sunday Art Club: Sessions launches at Arboretum in London’s West End\, offering an evening of intimate performance that provides a platform for multidisciplinary artists. The September Sessions offers Caribbean cuisine\, live theatre\, Funk & Hip Hop beats\, visual art\, poetry readings and a headline gig from highly renowned jazz musicians Tony Kofi and The Organisation. \nHeadliners Tony Kofi and The Organisation are a Hammond/guitar/drums/baritone saxophone quartet playing a combination of high energy modern jazz\, Latin blues and funk\, including many rarely played classics by George Russell\, Woody Shaw\, Duke Pearson\, Pepper Adams\, George Benson and others. Regulars on the jazz circuit have performed throughout London and the UK\, including at the Southbank Centre as part of the Pull Out the Stops festival of organ music. \nCelebrating The Sunday Art Club’s Season of Love\, director James Scotland-Barnes (Assistant Director\, She Ventures and He Wins\, Young Vic) presents a pivotal scene from Cyrano de Bergerac that explores not only the wonders of poetry but the importance of men learning how to love and lose themselves in the art of romance. Cyrano’s insecurity is one of citizenship and his Jamaican tongue in a world of wealth\, wit\, and words. Jamaican performer Akil Young will play the titular role with Afia Abusham (Nevergreen\, Arcola Theatre) as Roxane. Christian will be performed by Tom Swale\, who is currently busy creating a theatre school in his homeland of Papua New Guinea. \nThe evening will also feature Funk & Hip Hop beats by DJ Darsi alongside a display of atmospheric landscapes by visual artist Miriam Jane Camancho. Known primarily as a digital artist\, during the last year\, Camancho has worked to develop her creativity in physical art; running away from the endless possibilities that pixels provide\, she has let the imperfections of the brush and the texture of the paint texture expand her spontaneity and freedom. Plus\, there will be poetry readings from Yasmin Beck\, Charlotte Gosling and Marina Stoimenova. \nThe Sunday Art Club: Sessions are organised by Khaos\, a London-based\, internationally-minded theatre company\, with a mission to create theatre that is accessible to all. Khaos use the arts to galvanise communities to take social action. They see theatre as a movement\, a truth and a study of our existence. \nJames Scotland-Barnes comments\, “I’m very excited to get The Sunday Art Club open again and present a series of eclectic performances unique to our platform. Our September to December season starts strong with jazz great Tony Kofi. It builds on the marvellous work of newcomer Akil Young(Actor)\, who led the Guerrilla Shakespeare production of ‘Coriolanus’! Emerging from a tough 18 months\, I really hope that our ‘Season of Love’ re-engages our audiences old and new\, and with a host of new poets and actors\, we’ll be celebrating love in all its wonderful and complicated forms.” \nFollowing a successful debut in July 2020\, this unique series of not-for-profit events is a vehicle for the arts industry to reconnect at a grassroots level. It looks to build a network of multi-disciplinary artists and audiences from diverse backgrounds. \nKhaos\, formerly known as Outer Gaea Company\, is a 2021/22 New Vic Kiln Associate Company. \nLive Theatre in London
