SUMMARY:Kathy Maniura: Objectified
DESCRIPTION:Absurd character comedy show from award-winning comedian Kathy Maniura. \n\n\n\nKathy Maniura is ready to be objectified – by which she means pretending to be a bunch of objects. LIVE ON STAGE!! In her debut solo show\, this award-winning character comedian brings to life a few of her favourite things – and a lot of her least favourite. Is a paper straw as annoying as you’d think? What would a wine bottle own up to? What does a tiny little airpod have to say for herself? And why on earth is Kathy pretending to be objects?? Expect juicy confessions\, attempted accents and an insight into Kathy’s medical history in an hour of silliness that might make you look at the world a little differently. \n\n\n\n“flawlessly performed and wittily and inventively scripted” Chortle“standout performer… Enigmatic” The Scotsman“utterly original\, astonishing and boundlessly weird” Lost in Theatreland

SUMMARY:FREAK OUT! at VAULT Festival 2023
DESCRIPTION:This town is falling apart. \n\n\n\nWelcome to Portsford\, a seaside town fighting a losing battle with coastal erosion. When a sudden announcement threatens to tear the community apart in an attempt to raise spirits\, everyone comes together for a night of drinking and dancing. But as the party becomes a pressure cooker\, difficult conversations surrounding the shared loss of home and collective and individual responsibility rise to the surface. But wouldn’t you rather just dance the night away? \n\n\n\nAfter a successful debut at Bristol Old Vic in July 2022\, Coin Toss Collective are bringing their show FREAK OUT! to VAULT Festival 2023. Devised and performed by the company\, the show is inspired by the UK’s disappearing coastline as a result of coastal erosion\, accelerated by climate change\, and draws from research on affected communities in East Anglia.  \n\n\n\n“A surreal and devastating celebration of loss”\, FREAK OUT! experiments with theatrical styles and genres\, blending human stories with live art elements into an offbeat\, high-energy cocktail of a show. Enjoy it while it lasts because things are about to get messy… literally.

SUMMARY:Queer Planet
DESCRIPTION:London drag King Bi-Curious George presents Queer Planet\, a raucous drag celebration of queerness and the animal kingdom. \n\n\n\n“Move over David Attenborough\, there’s a new nature king in town.” \n\n\n\nBi-Curious George is a rising star of the London drag scene and the 2022 winner of the prestigious Not Another Drag Competition at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern. Their work centres around queer ecology\, queerness in the natural world. \n\n\n\nQueer Planet is a raucous romp through the animal kingdom which aims to shatter the heteronormative binaries through which we view the natural world. It is both a parody of and a homage to Britain’s beloved nature documentaries. Combining stand-up comedy\, parody songs\, drag and all manner of ridiculous behaviour\, George takes the audience through some of the many animals who display queer behaviour\, from dolphin orgies to hermaphroditic snails\, from transgender fish to gay giraffes. \n\n\n\nThe piece is a love letter to nature and all its exuberance\, as well as to the queer community. It encourages the audience to question everything they think they know about the natural world and reframe how we think about our own identities. \n\n\n\nEach night will also feature two guest performers from the London drag scene\, including; Richard Energy (death drop); Charlie Wood (NADC\, Miss-Ellaneous); and Die Lemma (Top of the Slops\, NADC\, Queerdos Cabaret). And more TBA!

SUMMARY:Instructions on How to Cry
DESCRIPTION:“A woman who can’t cry. I assure you\, there is nothing to fear.” \n\n\n\nInstructions on How to Cry is a new devised comedy play exploring the science and mystery of emotional tears which appear to be solely present in Homo Sapiens. Mixing clowning\, physical comedy and atmospheric live music\, the show invites audiences to have fun and celebrate theatre. At the heart of the performance lies a simple question: why do humans cry? \n\n\n\nA show filled with fun clowning and music. Devised and loosely inspired by Argentine Julio Cortázar’s surrealist work as well as scientific research on crying. \n\n\n\n“So funny and silly and beautiful and utterly un-British. Full of genius. Three splendid performers”. David Greig.

SUMMARY:HIDE
DESCRIPTION:There’s a legend that says the power to shed one’s skin was given to snakes by accident: the gods meant it for us. But instead of being able to shuck off each identity as we grow out of it\, our human skins layer up and harden into the leather – a hide to hide inside.  \n\n\n\nInspired by timeless folktales\, family history and Pure Imagination\, HIDE tells a story of mixed identity and the many masks we wear to get by in this world\, using a mix of storytelling and memoir with live sound\, live illustration and animation.

SUMMARY:Happy Deathday
DESCRIPTION:A genuine exploration of “It doesn’t matter\, one day I’ll be dead. Or does it?” will lead us to hilarious deathly shower thoughts\, as well as the simple biology versus the complex poetry of death. Let’s look at diverse rituals from cultures all over the world\, the sustainability and transparency developments of the funeral industry\, and the history that got us where we are! \nThis show was inspired by personal issues with a lack of end of life planning\, and death being a taboo topic many of us are so desperate to talk about. Because one thing is for sure\, we all die eventually\, there is (currently) no way around it\, so let’s talk about it.

SUMMARY:Compositor E
DESCRIPTION:It is 1623\, and 17-year old John has come to London to work as an apprentice typesetter\, under the mentorship of printer Isaac Jaggard. But while he’s desperate to develop his craft\, it’s becoming apparent that John is suffering from some kind of trauma. And with a potentially game-changing new commission on his hands\, Isaac does not have time for emotions. \nHaving persuaded Isaac to let him progress to setting from a confusing manuscript of ‘Macbeth’\, John’s trauma begins to spill out onto the print shop floor. Why were those men so scared of his mother? And why are these children scurrying around with sheets of drying ink called… ‘devils’? \nA play about the hidden fingerprints of history – produced in conjunction with the 400th anniversary of the publication of the First Folio – that asks who the storytellers really are.

SUMMARY:This Is The Land
DESCRIPTION:What exists in the ‘thin places’ where the distance between the living and the non-living is blurred? \n\n\n\nA symphony of stories resound from the land… \n\n\n\nTranscending narrative\, stories seep from the earth’s sediments\, affirming the unsettling feeling of a presence existing where logically it should not. Five shapeshifting figures navigate their arrival. Evoking a compelling cycle of the Seasons. Spring/Beginning: rebirth and resilience. Summer/Freedom: memory and desire. Autumn/Resistance: trespass and dispossession. Winter/Survival: journeying and hope. This Is The Land could not be more relevant to the issues of our times – ecological crisis\, social inequality\, and political repression of dissenting voices – whilst raising these in a highly original way. \n\n\n\nThis Is The Land’s stripped-back abstract-expressionist style is highly visual\, visceral\, and physical. The performance resists narrative through its ‘mash-up’ style of fragmentary images\, compelling movement and dance\, atmospheric soundtrack and live-vocal looping.

SUMMARY:This Is The Land
DESCRIPTION:What exists in the ‘thin places’ where the distance between the living and the non-living is blurred?Transcending narrative\, complex stories seep from the earth’s sediments\, affirming the unsettling feeling of a presence existing where logically it should not. These stories of the land create a space for an eerie presence of the spectral past to become momentarily accessible. This Is The Land could not be more relevant to the issues of our times – ecological crisis\, social inequality\, and political repression of dissenting voices – whilst raising these in a highly original way.

SUMMARY:HEXENHAMMER at VAULT Festival
DESCRIPTION:HEXENHAMMER was shortlisted for the Untapped Award 2022 and is directed by Complicité Associate Catherine Alexander. It’s a darkly comedic and totally devised piece about violent misogyny and the online ‘Manosphere’\, from the early witch hunts to Reddit chatrooms. \n\n\n\nHEXENHAMMER is loosely based on The Hammer of Witches\, the 15th-century guide towitch hunting. Written by two Dominican monks\, it kick-started the European witch craze andwas partly responsible for the murder of tens of thousands of women over the next fewhundred years. \n\n\n\nIncorporating text taken directly from Die Hexenhammer and verbatim text found onlineincel forums\, HEXENHAMMER explores how men end up killing women as a way to solvetheir own problems\, and why that hasn’t changed in the past 500 years. \n\n\n\n“Sometimes a piece of theatre really nails it. Hexenhammer is a wittywild ride on the misogyny train\, from the 15th c monks who sparkedthe witch hunts to today’s incel culture (via Jordan Peterson’slobster). Can’t wait to see what’s next.”– Gabriel Gatehouse\, creator and host of the BBC podcast “TheComing Storm” \n\n\n\nSecretariat is a writing and performance duo consisting of Suzy Kohane (The Secret Life OfHumans\, NDT) and Sidsel Rostrup (Close To Me\, Channel 4).We use comedy to open up political issues and get to the people beneath them. We arefocused on how technology impacts intimate relationships\, how outsiders become insiders\,and use clowning as a way of interrogating interpersonal dynamics. \n\n\n\nShows: Friday\, February 10th @ 10:40pm and Saturday\, February 11th @ 4:10pm and 10:10pm\n\n\n\n\nVenue: The Studio\, The Vaults\, Leake Street\, London\, SE1 7NN\nhttps://vaultfestival.com/performances/hexenhammer/\nTwitter: @Secretariat_Lndn

SUMMARY:Borders הגדר ألسياج
DESCRIPTION:Junction Theatre & Performance is proud to present their debut production – Borders. \nA play about a Grindr encounter between two potential enemies\, written by Nimrod Danishman. \nBoaz and George meet on Grindr. One is in Israel\, the other in Lebanon. They’re horny but can’t meet physically. Something in their conversation excites them. The distance\, the “enemy”\, the foreignness\, and the experience of being gay in another culture. They both fill a void the other has\, becoming each other’s secret love. As they decide to meet in Berlin\, the border between the countries heats up\, and they’re forced to make difficult decisions. \nInspired by a real encounter between the Israeli writer and a Lebanese man on Grindr\, Borders is a story about two people never meant to meet\, who try to form an intimate relationship against all odds. Scripted very delicately with a touch of humour\, it addresses the many complexities of the Middle East reality in which the geopolitical circumstances we are born into dictate the people we can connect with.
