SUMMARY:Screaming Females + Sniffany and The Nits
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nSCREAMING FEMALES have now been a band for half the lifetime of its members. Formed in 2005 in New Brunswick\, NJ\, the trio has consistently created a hearty\, surprising mix of indie\, alt\, punk and stoner-rock\, all with their original line-up of Marissa Paternoster (guitar\, vocals)\, “King Mike” Mike Abbate (bass) and Jarrett Dougherty (drums). Released on February 17th by Don Giovanni Records\, the group’s new album ‘Desire Pathway’ was recorded at Minnesota’s Pachyderm Studios (where Nirvana recorded In Utero) and produced by Matt Bayles (Foxing\, Pearl Jam\, Mastodon\, et al.). Bright and full\, the album captures the band at a time when nothing was certain other than their abiding desire to make music together. \n\n\n\n‘Desire Pathway’ opens with the Sabbathy hypnotism of “Brass Bell.” Following a swelling haze of synth\, feedback shrieks\, martial snares advance\, and the band explodes into a bracing groove. Soon\, Paternoster makes the cryptic announcement: “I have flown us to the moon\,” and we’re off. The song has the effect of clearing one haze and replacing it with another\, much heavier one. “Beyond the Void” may gather gloomily\, but it quickly releases into its jangly\, memorable chorus. Single “Mourning Dove” successfully channels the Pixies into a tight\, driving power-pop song that passionately declares “My love for you is too strong to hide.” Now 18 years and eight albums in\, Screaming Females are still making their own path in the world\, still touring DIY and releasing music without compromise. The route might cut a little off the main road\, but you’ll quickly see there’s a reason they’re on it. You might like where it leads you.https://screamingfemales.com/ \n\n\n\nSNIFFANY AND THE NITS are a deranged\, genuinely troubling punk band from London featuring Joanna Gruesome\, Ex-Void and The Tubs members. The Unscratchable Itch is their debut album via PRAH Recordings. Sister Sniffany and her singular lyrical performance style elevate the band beyond the sum of their influences. Her lyrics touch on a world of hidden humiliations\, girl abjection\, crumpled lager cans\, clam chowder and lumpy\, over-stuffed dollies. The band veer between atonal no-wave guitar assault\, straight-up hardcore\, goth/anarcho or whatever takes their fancy while remaining identifiably Nit-like. Always grounded by a pounding\, pogo-ing rhythm section\, The Nits provide the perfect backdrop for Sister Sniffany’s wild\, relentless live performances.https://sniffanyandthenits.bandcamp.com \n\n\n\nSCREAMING FEMALESSNIFFANY AND THE NITSWednesday 14 JuneOSLO\, 1a Amhurst Road\, Hackney Central\, London\, E8 1LL7.30pm | £15 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/ld532d69ac2a

SUMMARY:XIU XIU + ME LOST ME
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nXIU XIUME LOST MEWednesday 7 JuneEarth Theatre\, 11-17 Stoke Newington Rd\, London\, N16 8BH6.30pm-10.30pm | £16 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/U47253457cae \n\n\n\nXIU XIU is the conduit for the uncompromising and unnervingly personal musical works of Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist Jamie Stewart\, plus a roll call of collaborators both in the studio and onstage. Streaming forth a ceaseless torrent of releases\, side projects\, art offerings and extensive international touring since 2002\, Xiu Xiu’s music has veered from damaged avant-pop to artfully orchestrated rock\, squalls of black-hearted noise and most bases around and between\, ever-served with bruising honesty and intensity that has ripped out the hearts of a legion of obsessive listeners. \n\n\n\nThis March\, the band returns with a devastatingly macabre\, appropriately cacophonous new album\, Ignore Grief\, due for release on Polyvinyl. The current iteration of Xiu Xiu includes existing members Jamie Stewart and Angela Seo\, now joined by an old friend and new member\, David Kendrick (Sparks\, Devo\, Gleaming Spires). ‘Ignore Gried’ is an album of halves. Angela Seo sings on half of the record. Jamie Stewart sings on half of the record. Half of the songs are experimental industrial. Half of the songs are experimental modern classical. Half of it is real. Half of it is imaginary. Xiu has spent twenty years grappling with how to process\, be empathetic towards\, disobey and reorganize horror; there is no other word for it other than horror.http://www.xiuxiu.org/ \n\n\n\nME LOST ME delights in experimenting with songwriting and storytelling\, creating a beguiling mix of soaring vocals and atmospheric electronics that playfully push the boundaries of genre. Led by Newcastle-based artist Jayne Dent who takes influence from folk\, art pop\, noise\, ambient and improvised music\, the project has transformed since 2017 from a solo endeavour to an expanded group\, regularly collaborating with acclaimed North-East jazz musicians Faye MacCalman and John Pope. Me Lost Me’s music has been described in The Guardian as “stripping folk back to its bones while letting its future echoes bleed out” and by BBC Radio 6’s Tom Robinson as a “brilliant peculiar noise”. Me Lost Me’s forthcoming RPG album will be released on July 7th via Upset The Rhythm.https://www.melostme.com/

SUMMARY:Editrix + Beige Palace + ES
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nEDITRIXBEIGE PALACEES \n\n\n\nEDITRIX is Steve Cameron\, Josh Daniel\, and Wendy Eisenberg. Steve plays bass; Josh plays the drums; Wendy plays the guitar and sings. Editrix came to life around 2018. Eisenberg had honed their skills as a jazz guitarist but was drawn to noise after growing frustrated by a limited area of study. Inspired by the Northeast’s thriving DIY scene\, they moved to Boston from the Washington\, D.C. suburbs. Editrix is as if you took borderline classical music in its crystalline perfection and obsessive attention to detail and then played it through Kurt Cobain’s Rat Pedal with not a shred of piety or decorum. This is doom-laden nihilism lovingly decorated in heart stickers from the first slide of guitar notes of the opening title track. It is caring\, pretending not to care\, resisting the emotive signals so abused in the mainstream\, which is what tells you that it really does care. It is the synthesis of the dialectic and the clarion call of the proletarian revolution. \n\n\n\n‘Editrix II’ is the group’s new album\, a record that’s impossible not to like. Do not expect calcified recreations of pre-existing bands\, even the ones Editrix loves. But if pop is anything to do with melody\, prepare yourself to sing along by the second line of each track. If it’s defined by rhythm\, warn your head not to get caught napping because it will shortly be banging. And if\, for you pop equals a full-on full-frequency sonic sickness\, this one grabs your ears by the ear lapels and never lets go. This is haiku rock\, its minimal lyrics compressing novels into a few syllables. It sounds like it came to their heads like a bolt of lightning. \n\n\n\nhttps://editrix.bandcamp.com/album/editrix-ii-editrix-goes-to-hell \n\n\n\nBEIGE PALACE is a minimalist trio from Leeds\, an irreverent kaleidoscope of noise rock\, post-hardcore\, musique concrete\, spoken word\, chamber music\, and general auditory mayhem. Check out their terrific album ‘Leg’ and their forthcoming ‘Waterloo Sublet’ 7” split with Cassels on their Bandcamp page.https://beigepalace.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nES returned with their incredible new EP ‘Fantasy’ (Upset The Rhythm) this month. A four-track contact-high anxiety amid fact and facsimile\, the new release attempts to define a sound that still resonates in an increasingly confused public theatre\, where cerebral dreams manifest in corrupt fascination. Echoing the legendary Pylon or the later disco-inspired releases from PIL tracks like ‘Emergency’ and ‘Unreal’ blend the band’s established disjunctive style of gothic restlessness with brighter\, poppy\, and danceable tunes. Es deconstruct our modern wreckage of personhood and self-deceit\, granting a sense of solidarity inside alienation. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://esband.bandcamp.com/\n\n\n\n\nSunday 4 JuneThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB7.30pm | £9 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/de59bbb09db5

SUMMARY:House of All + David Lance Callahan
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nHOUSE OF ALL is a Fall Family Continuum. Last Summer\, five key members of The Fall got back together to record an album: Martin Bramah\, Steve Hanley\, Paul Hanley\, Simon Wolstencroft and Pete Greenway. This project has been dubbed: HOUSE OF ALL. Recorded over three days during the Solstice\, the session was a great success\, and the resulting self-titled debut album will be coming out in May 2023. Martin Bramah\, The Fall’s singer until Mark E Smith’s lesser guitar skills caused them to swap places\, was possibly the last true equal to Smith in the group and the longest survivor of the original line-up. Yet while The Fall was later famous for their legendary productivity\, Bramah often went great periods between releases\, releasing fewer albums in thirty-five years (under any guise) than he has in the last seven with Blue Orchids – who already have a fantastic new album in the can. Bramah has joined forces with four other mighty Fall alumni: Steve Hanley\, The Fall’s longest-serving bassist\, as well as his brother Paul Hanley\, who drummed on what may be the best run of Fall records\, from “Grotesque” to “Bend Sinister”. The three have also played together as Factory Star for a brief period. Joining them are two surprise members – drummer Simon Wolstencroft\, who joined the Fall around the time Paul left\, and more surprisingly\, guitarist Pete Greenway\, The Fall’s long-serving and final guitarist who has\, to our knowledge\, never played with the other four before. \nAnd the album? Recorded in a burst of intense creativity\, we won’t tempt you to propagandise you\, the album speaks for itself\, but it wouldn’t be a false boast to say that it stands with much of the best Fall or Blue Orchids music\, displaying an energy and psychic impulse all its own\, each member playing as sharply and with as much drive as ever\, around manic motorik grooves and a shocking lack of ‘compromise’. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/fallfamilycontinuum \nDAVID LANCE CALLAHAN has\, after a string of fine albums with those C86 indie-pop pioneers The Wolfhounds\, an enticing run on the Too Pure label in the experimentalist band Moonshake\, as well as collaborations with PJ Harvey and members of Stereolab\, now begun his solo career in earnest\, releasing a pair of daring albums with a mélange of what’s been called “mutant Eastern\, West African\, folk\, blues and post-punk influences. \nhttps://davidlancecallahan.bandcamp.com/ \nHOUSE OF ALLDAVID LANCE CALLAHANThursday 18 MayThe Garage\, 20-22 Highbury Corner\, London\, N5 1RD7.30pm | £17 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/lc724814be5a \n

SUMMARY:LLOYD / BEAN + DAVID LANCE CALLAHAN
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nLLOYD / BEAN is a new project from Robert Lloyd (of The Nightingales) and Janet Beveridge-Bean from alt-country duo Freakwater. Robert dared to approach Janet with the idea of recording together. Throughout the long pandemic\, songs were bandied about for months. When the recording was finally practical\, a band was assembled with dates set up for a recording session in Valencia\, Spain. Robert and Janet were joined by Robert’s long-time ally\, Pete Byrchmore\, the musical foil for Robert’s solo album on Virgin and a former Nightingale\, Mark Bedford\, the bassist for Madness and Terry Edwards’ Near Jazz Experience\, and Pablo Roda\, Spanish mystery drummer\, couldn’t have worked out more perfectly. \n\n\n\nTracks were selected without regard for collective presentation to walk out of the studio with an album of perfect gems. Forget Lee & Nancy or George & Tammy\, Rob and Janet have an immediate chemistry that only sounds long-lived – and too uniquely them to merit any comparison. The title track\, Black Cat\, Dark Horse\, is the sole Lloyd / Bean / Byrchmore composition and one of the record’s highlights. Jim Elkington\, the collaborator with Jeff Tweedy and Richard Thompson\, contributes Heavy Reckonings and a song written with Janet\, The True Lovers’ Knot And The Lie. At the same time\, Robert adds reworkings from past releases – Sweet Georgia Black and Black Country (with Pete) – not to mention the unreleased Eggs And Bacon. Janet brought One Shot and the unheard Freakwater song Arc Of A Smile. \n\n\n\nWe daresay the album is among the finest you’ll hear in 2023. The Michael Cumming / Stewart Lee film King Rocker made a case for Robert Lloyd-as-lost- hero; this album furthers that idea and shows a compelling side of Janet’s talent and abilities which will be a surprise to her fans and serve as an entry point to exploring her many other compelling projects. For this only performance of the forthcoming ‘Black Cat\, Dark Horse’ album Lloyd / Bean will be joined by Mark Bedford\, Peter Byrchmore and drummer extraordinaire Lindy Morrison of The Go-Betweens.https://lloydbean.bandcamp.com/album/black-cat-dark-horse \n\n\n\nDAVID LANCE CALLAHAN has\, after a string of fine albums with those C86 indie-pop pioneers The Wolfhounds\, an enticing run on the Too Pure label in the experimentalist band Moonshake\, as well as collaborations with PJ Harvey and members of Stereolab\, now begun his solo career in earnest\, releasing a pair of daring albums with a mélange of what’s been called “mutant Eastern\, West African\, folk\, blues and post-punk influences.https://davidlancecallahan.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nLLOYD / BEANDAVID LANCE CALLAHANTuesday 2 MayBush Hall\, 310 Uxbridge Rd\, Shepherds Bush\, London W12 7LJ7.30pm | £25 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/d6cf179a3c50

SUMMARY:Cindy + Index For Working Musik
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nCINDYINDEX FOR WORKING MUSIKWednesday 26 AprilThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB7.30pm | £8.50 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/z790b084119e \n\n\n\nCINDY is a band built around the singing and guitar playing of Karina Gill\, who she self-nurtured after finding an abandoned Squier Strat in her San Francisco apartment basement. Her intrigue soon grew into the band that is Cindy\, who have found a worldwide following in their slow-moving\, dream-pop world that shrouds Gill’s songs thanks to support from model-independent labels Mt. St. Mtn. [USA] and Tough Love Records [UK].Cindy’s fourth LP\, Why Not Now? It will be released this April. The music captured is simply out of necessity and introverted in delivery\, but the songs contain vivid worlds and are quietly ambitious. With this latest batch\, Gill pulled the process of making Cindy’s music even more inward. “Some of these songs were recorded as demos alone in my basement. I think that process set the tone for the record…Maybe it set up a kind of starkness\,” she says. While the dream-pop tag is probably still relevant\, this isn’t an algorithm-fed genre ambience. Gill’s vocal/lyrical presence can be as gently momentous as Leonard Cohen’s or as intellectually potent as any ’79-’80 Rough Trade post-punk. Cindy’s Why Not Now? is that muffled street symphony inside a passing daydream.https://cindytheband.bandcamp.com/album/1-2 \n\n\n\nINDEX FOR WORKING MUSIK released their debut album ’Dragging the Needlework for the Kids at Uphole’ via Tough Love. 35 minutes of repeat phrased guitars\, slow-clipped drums and dulcet vocals where the recurring landscape is the desert. Reel-to-reel-loops of Afghan music compete with the found sound overlays of voices recorded at the queue of the pharmacy and drum machines borrowed from Spanish heroes\, channelling both far-off climes and snippets from a closer reality. It’s a strange psychic brew\, built of imagined mysticism and domestic realities\, of fever dreams and days that stretched into weeks of months.https://indexforworkingmusik.bandcamp.com

She experiments with her Lyon and Healy Concert Grand harp and effects. Her solo debut\, The Withdrawing Room\, was released in 2013 on Desire Path Recordings. Lattimore also writes harp parts for songs and recordings\, performing and recording with such great artists as Meg Baird\, Thurston Moore\, Sharon Van Etten\, Jarvis Cocker\, Kurt Vile\, Steve Gunn\, Ed Askew and Fursaxa. Her debut solo record for Ghostly International\, ‘At The Dam’\, was recorded during stops along a road trip across America and released in March 2016. The next year\, she compiled sounds from her past life in Philadelphia for a cassette tape titled ‘Collected Pieces’. Released in May 2018 to acclaim from the likes of NPR\, Pitchfork\, and The New Yorker\, Lattimore’s next album ‘Hundreds of Days’ presented an expression of mystified gratitude for the natural world. She capped off the banner year — which included international tours with Iceage and Kurt Vile\, a performance with Harold Budd at Big Ears Festival\, and an appearance on Billboard’s New Age charts — with two collaborative albums released on Three Lobed Recordings\, one with Meg Baird and the other with Mac McCaughan. \n\n\n\nLattimore’s most recent album ‘Silver Ladders’ (out 2020 on Ghostly)\, saw her arriving at her most confident work to date\, expanding her style of instrumental storytelling with the help of producer and guitarist Neil Halstead (Slowdive\, Mojave 3). Recorded in Halstead’s studio near an old English surf town\, the songs on ‘Silver Ladders’ reflect Lattimore’s vivid memories against the gloom and glimmer of the ocean.https://marylattimoreharpist.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nLEAFCUTTER JOHN grew up in Wakefield\, fascinated by sound. Still\, it wasn’t until halfway through his painting degree at the Norwich School of Art and Design that he discovered a computer he was using to write his dissertation could take him on new sonic adventures by recording and manipulating sound. Since 2000\, John has released nine full-length albums (Border Community\, Planet Mu\, Staubgold)\, toured widely\, built expressive interfaces for electronic music\, and received the prestigious Paul Hamlyn Foundation award. His most recent work ‘Lockdown Patchwork’ was commissioned by HCMF and Leeds Art Gallery and used interview material\, publicly submitted field recordings\, and new music written by John. Aside from his solo work\, he’s written for theatre\, dance\, and radio. He was also a key member of the experimental jazz band Polar Bear\, recording five albums with them and picking up two Mercury Prize nominations. John has performed with Shabaka Hutchings\, Talvin Singh\, and Imogen Heap and supported Matmos\, Otomo Yoshihide\,Yo La Tengo and Beck.http://www.leafcutterjohn.com

DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nCLAIRE ROUSAYLAILA SAKINITuesday 11 AprilGrand Junction\, Rowington Cl\, London W2 5TF7.30pm | £16 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/g3773706d1eb \n\n\n\nCLAIRE ROUSAY’s music zeroes in on personal emotions and the minutiae of everyday life — voicemails\, haptics\, environmental recordings\, stopwatches\, whispers and conversations — exploding their significance. Based in San Antonio\, Texas\, Claire’s acute assemblages of sound are both a diaristic portal into the life of their creator\, and an exercise in dressing and undressing the bare audio field using compositional threads that feel loosely entangled\, yet fastidiously woven. A prolific run of recordings since 2020\, culminating in this year’s ‘everything perfect is already here’ (Shelter Press)\, has seen Claire come closer than most modern sound-makers to aesthetically nailing the temperament of a world turned inward. \n\n\n\nNow\, as music leaves the house once more\, Claire’s live show – in both solo mode and trio formation with close collaborators Mari ‘More Eaze’ Maurice and Theodore Cale Schafer – brings a singular reflexivity\, unflinching honesty and adroit humour to the performance space\, with an ever-burgeoning audience accepting the invite into her soundworld.https://clairerousay.com/ \n\n\n\nLAILA SAKINI works with piano\, voice\, guitar\, found sound\, electronics and silence to create dynamic and textured environments that provide the listener with space to develop their own meanings and responses. Her major works include Like A Gun (EP)\, Vivienne (LP)\, Strada (EP)\, Into The Traffic\, Under The Moonlight (LP)\, Princess Diana of Wales (LP) and her 2017 collaboration with poet Lucy Van\, Figures (EP). Laila has performed at Cafe Oto\, Galeria Zé dos Bois\, Berlin Atonal\, Listen! festival\, The White Hotel\, Meakusma x Arkaoda\, Kings Place\, Wunkderkammer Festival\, Ponto d’Orvalho among others.https://lailasakini.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:ME LOST ME + BULBILS + LUKI
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nME LOST MEBULBILSLUKISunday 5 MarchCafe OTO\, 18-22 Ashwin St\, London\, E8 3DL7.30pm | £8 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/jfe003fa3a38 \n\n\n\nME LOST ME delights in experimenting with songwriting and storytelling\, creating a beguiling mix of soaring vocals and atmospheric electronics that playfully push the boundaries of genre. Led by Newcastle-based artist Jayne Dent who takes influence from folk\, art pop\, noise\, ambient and improvised music\, the project has transformed since 2017 from a solo endeavor to an expanded group; regularly collaborating with acclaimed North-East jazz musicians Faye MacCalman and John Pope. Me Lost Me’s music has been described in The Guardian as “stripping folk back to its bones while letting its future echoes bleed out”\, and by BBC Radio 6’s Tom Robinson as a “brilliant peculiar noise”. \n\n\n\nA prolific writer\, Me Lost Me has released two crowdfunded albums: ‘Arcana’ (2018) and ‘The Good Noise’ (2020)\, which was included in Electronic Sound Magazine’s Album of the Year list. These\, in addition to her latest EP ‘The Circle Dance’ (2021)\, which was described as “her most textural and sonically adventurous music to date” by NARC Magazine\, and an extensive touring schedule around the UK DIY scene\, has won her unique sound much support across the musical spectrum. Dent has notably performed live for BBC Radio 3’s After Dark Festival and as part of the 2022 BBC Proms alongside Spell Songs\, Royal Northern Sinfonia and the Voices of the Rivers Edge Choir. She recently received the prestigious Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Composers and was 2020-2021 Artist in Residence at Sage Gateshead.https://www.melostme.com/ \n\n\n\nBULBILS is Sally Pilkington and Richard Dawson\, a duo from the Tyne & Wear valley channeling the infinite with their burgeoning\, beguiling homespun music. Their vast catalogue stands at 71 titles (at time of writing) and runs the full gamut with mesmeric\, drifting\, inventive freedom occupying the heart of the group. Resolutely lo-fi\, spontaneous and often unruly\, Bulbils started out as a lockdown coping strategy based around the idea of providing comfort and employing synths\, bass\, drum machines\, vocoder etc. but has sparkily propagated into something truly expansive\, unhurried and horizon-chasing. You can check out all the duo’s recordings on their band camp page linked below. Pilkington and Dawson also perform together in another of our favourite bands\, Hen Ogledd.https://bulbils.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nLUKI is the music project of singer and pianist Lucy Duncan and producer Misha Rivers. Using voice\, piano\, synths and electronics\, they create atmospheric pop that blends everyday and the imaginary with theatrical and emotive force. Indebted to folk\, post-punk\, art pop and the odd edges of musical theatre\, their music is immersive\, narrative driven and direct. Following the release of ‘Wisps’ on Glasgow’s label GLARC in 2018\, LUKI released a single ‘The Parts’ on lathe-cut label Sonido Polifonico. Their debut EP ‘Half True’\, was self-released recently too.https://glarc.bandcamp.com/album/wisps

SUMMARY:NO AGE + SHAKE CHAIN
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nNO AGESHAKE CHAINSaturday 4 March100 Club\, 100 Oxford St\, Oxford Street\, W1D 1LL7.30pm | £14 |  Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Zf02f4acddc4 \n\n\n\nNO AGE have a guiding principle: first thought\, best thought. Constantly responding to their own streams of consciousness with reductive flexibility\, they’ve taken the basic duo of guitar and drums with vocals WAY farther than anyone listening in halcyon Weirdo Rippers days could have guessed. Expounding on those larval possibilities\, they’ve zig-zagged in serpentine precision\, in and out of the teeth of the wringer – ranging outside and back in again\, as befits the present thought. And now\, 16 years deep and six albums into it\, these motives have led them to make People Helping People (Drag City). \n\n\n\n‘People Helping People’ sees No Age deep in the lab\, scraping available nuclii together to see what new compound they find next. Erasing the starting points\, reordering the pieces and beginning anew. Side one ricochets expertly back and forth between magisterial instrumentals\, and sing-song forms cut up on the mixing desk\, as with the undeniable hitness of “Plastic (You Want It)”\, winningly rewired to MIDI-mangled beat squelches. Straight up punk-style riffs get busy on side B\, their aesthetic choices continuously reframe the norms\, enhancing their inherent power. ‘People Helping People’ finds their disparate desires operating in perfect sync; prolegomenic weirdness fused immaculately to classic rock propulsion\, transforming the energy pouring out from their hands and feet with electronics.  This is ‘People Helping People: unpretentious\, suspicious\, inviting\, and left-field. The most accurate display of the No Age ethos put to record. Yet!https://noage.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nSHAKE CHAIN have been busy demolishing audiences and expectations for the best part of the last three years. Vocalist Kate Mahony sets that standard by anything from crawling through the audience’s legs in a bright yellow raincoat to crying and washing her hands in a nearby toilet as the rest of the band start the set. A feeling of anxiety and unease conjures relevant questioning\, ‘what an earth is going on?’\, ‘am I hallucinating?’ and ‘is this part of the show?’\, all hallmarks of Shake Chain’s unruly and lyric-bespattered rock show. The four-piece from London are completed by Robert Eyres (Synth/Guitar)\, Chris Hopkins (Bass/Synth/Samples) and Joe Fergey (Drums). Born from the ashes of their former bands\, the group met with a desire to create something that would feel new for each of them and audibly take its own course. The result is a nervous propulsion of bass lines\, twitchy guitars that jolt and jerk and tack sharp drums overridden by screeching vocal slurs and sampled television. Kate’s singing is a unique embrace of flights of atonal fancy\, head-first repetition and ecstatic frenzy. Opinion-dividing arguably\, but singular in making Shake Chain dauntingly brilliant. The band’s debut album ’Snake Chain’ is out now on Upset The Rhythm.https://upsettherhythm.bandcamp.com/album/snake-chain

Nu metal bass riffs\, switch-pitched fuzz vocals and big drums layer up with unsettling narratives and extreme loops to bring a bit of the pit to the dancefloor. Donna Candy’s first album ‘Blooming’ will be released this spring on bison. This tour will be the first time Donna Candy plays in the UK.https://donnacandy.bandcamp.com/album/donna-candy \n\n\n\nHISTORICALLY FUCKED are fresh from the release of their new LP ‘The Mule Peasants’ Revolt of 12\,067’ on Upset The Rhythm. This four-way fandango is back with a new musical game of “badger in the bag”\, building songs as quickly as they can and then chewing them up again just as quickly. Historically Fucked contains four people\, who each share the same duties\, and whose names in sequence are Otto Willberg\, David Birchall\, Greta Buitkuté and Alecs Pierce. Guitar\, bass\, drums and voices keenly jostle amid the group’s frenzy of spontaneous rock throttles.https://upsettherhythm.co.uk/historicallyfucked.shtml

SUMMARY:ERIC CHENAUX + [something’s happening]
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nERIC CHENAUX[something’s happening]Friday 9th DecemberWest Hampstead Arts Club\, 32 Mill Lane\, London NW6 1NR7.30pm | £13 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/S2a86ebe0cd6 \nERIC CHENAUX lives in Paris but was a fixture of DIY and experimental music in Toronto throughout the 1990s and 2000s\, progressing from local postpunk legends Phleg Camp and Lifelikeweeds towards a highly distinctive technical and gestural mastery of amplified acoustic guitar. Eric Chenaux operates among various musical ‘traditions’ but perhaps most broadly\, his records grapple with the relationship between improvisation and structure in very particular\, unique\, idiosyncratic ways – and quite without irony or cynicism\, through love. Because fundamentally\, Chenaux writes love songs\, which he sings in a voice honeyed and clear\, while his guitar gently bends\, frazzes\, chortles\, diverges and decomposes. This juxtaposition of his mellow\, dexterous crooning and his highly experimental (and equally dexterous) guitar explorations\, explodes even unconventional notions of singing and accompaniment\, of tonal and timbral interplay between guitar and voice. \nConstellation has been home to Eric’s “solo” records since 2006 – a brilliant discography of adventurous\, sumptuous\, mostly languorous deconstructed folk\, jazz and pop-influenced balladry rooted in the juxtaposition of Chenaux’s fried guitar playing and his gorgeously clear and lyrical singing voice. Eric’s new album comes out this February and is his most immaculate and pristine. ‘Say Laura’ perfectly incarnates the counter-intuitive interplay of instrument and voice that Chenaux has been revealing and revelling in throughout the past decade: his gently unhinged juxtaposition of resplendently smooth\, seductively assured singing and puckish\, thoroughly destabilized guitar could come from no other musician. The five wandering\, wondering ballads on ‘Say Laura’ bring Chenaux’s semi-improvised but keenly intentional songwriting to its fullest\, clearest\, warmest and coolest articulation; uncompromising and generous\, hyper-specific and loose\, spartan and luxurious\, elemental and ornate.http://ericchenaux.com/ \n[something’s happening] is the sound and text duo of poet and performer Iris Colomb and composer Daryl Worthington (Beachers). The project explores textual and sonic permutation through improvisation. Fragments of found text and gestural electro-acoustics weave through spectral guitar textures. Loops of sound and language collide.https://somethingshappening.bandcamp.com/album/something-like-that

Using looped and layered clarinet\, vocals\, samples\, keys & percussion\, Tara Clerkin Trio tend to spin you into spacy beguile. They are inspired by and borrow from jazz\, trip hop\, electronica\, psychedelia & minimalism\, twirling the non-pretentious strands of these threads together into a trippy green winged-cloak\, adorning Arthur Russell and dripping in blue jam. Their self titled debut LP was released in 2020 and was a sleeper hit\, coming in at 35 in the Wire’s top 100 albums of the year and in Bleeps top 10. The effortless drift of ’In Spring’\, the trio’s new EP is a distinctly Bristolian affair in its beatdown pacing and smoky atmosphere\, which the label themselves compare to the roster orbiting the city’s Planet Records (Flying Saucer Attack\, The Third Eye Foundation) in the ‘90s. Subdued but glowing reveries somewhere between Dominique Lawalrée’s intimate parlour music and the sort of skewed narco-pop associated with the Laika x Moonshake axis and Cucina Povera.\nhttps://taraclerkintrio.bandcamp.com/ \nMXLX is prolific Bristol-based musician Matthew Loveridge. SUMMARY:LANDE HEKT + JADE HAIRPINS
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents…LANDE HEKTJADE HAIRPINSMonday 14 NovemberThe Shacklewell Arms\, 71 Shacklewell Lane\, Dalston\, London\, E8 2EB7.30pm | £8.50 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/z293f7e05023 \n\n\n\nLANDE HEKT’s voice in music is one that’s socially aware yet often introspective\, drawing awareness to serious issues while baring her soul. Much of Hekt’s compositions are a personal diary of what’s going on in her life at any given time. This is evident in her discography with Muncie Girls\, the band she formed in her hometown of Exeter as a teenager and has released two critically acclaimed albums to date. This knack of combining her own experiences and feelings whilst highlighting larger socio-economic issues has carried through to her more contemplative solo material\, which began life in an EP ‘Gigantic Disappointment’\, self-released in 2019. \n\n\n\nLande Hekt’s debut album Going to Hell\, was released in 2021 and was placed in Stereogum’s Album of the Week\, Bandcamp’s Album of the Day\, and one of AV Club’s ‘17 albums we can’t wait to hear. The album is a personal and confessional account of Hekt coming out as gay\, and DIY Magazine called it “A celebration of personal freedom”. Going to Hell came out on the queer and trans-run DIY label\, Get Better Records and gained Lande Hekt a following for her introspective and journal-style lyrics\, political themes and catchy\, guitar-driven indie rock. New 7” single ‘Romantic’ – a song about struggling to fit in\, feeling down and finding comfort in romance – is now on Emotional Response.https://landehekt.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nJADE HAIRPINS is the pop-indie project of Mike Haliechuk and Jonah Falco of Fucked Up. Their debut LP\, “Harmony Avenue” (Merge Records)\, is a whirlwind touch of fizzing synths\, Talking Heads-Esque guitar interplay set to long melodic vocals and dancey drums. The band live the added strengths of Tamsin (Es) and Jack Goldstein\, bringing the songs to life.https://jadehairpins.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:MARY LATTIMORE + LAILA SAKINI
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nMARY LATTIMORE\nLAILA SAKINI\nMonday 31 October\n229\, 229 Great Portland St\, London\, W1W 5PN\, UK\n7pm | £12 (16+ show) | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/d570d6dcc32e \n\n\n\nMARY LATTIMORE is a harpist and composer living in Los Angeles. Released in May 2018 to acclaim from the likes of NPR\, Pitchfork\, and The New Yorker Lattimore’s next album ‘Hundreds of Days’ presented an expression of mystified gratitude for the natural world. Recorded in Halstead’s studio near an old English surftown\, the songs on ‘Silver Ladders’ reflect Lattimore’s vivid memories against the gloom and glimmer of the ocean. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://marylattimoreharpist.bandcamp.com/\n\n\n\n\nLAILA SAKINI works with piano\, voice\, guitar\, found sound\, electronics and silence to create dynamic and textured environments that provide the listener with space to develop their own meanings and responses. Laila has performed at Cafe Oto\, Galeria Zé dos Bois\, Berlin Atonal\, Listen! festival\, The White Hotel\, Meakusma x Arkaoda\, Kings Place\, Wunkderkammer Festival\, Ponto d’Orvalho among others. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://lailasakini.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:PROLAPSE + YEAH YEAH NOH
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nPROLAPSEYEAH YEAH NOHSaturday 29 OctoberOSLO\, 1a Amhurst Road\, Hackney Central\, E8 1LL7.30pm | £12 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Zaa6a254b9b3 \n\n\n\nPROLAPSE originally formed in Leicester in the early 1990s and earned a cult following for their chaotic live sets and tense and repetitious songs like Flex and Tina This Is Matthew Stone. They feature duelling vocalists Mick Derrick and Linda Steelyard\, who play out an intense soap opera over a ferocious triple guitar assault and pummelling rhythm section.Their releases have included numerous singles and four albums on various labels\, including Cherry Red and Radar\, and recording four Peel sessions. The band has received critical acclaim\, including singles of the week on the Radio 1 evening session and NME. They have toured and shared bills with various bands\, including Stereolab\, Sebadoh\, Arab Strap and Sonic Youth. Pavement’s Stephen Malkmus described Prolapse as the best band of the weekend at the Reading Festival. After a long hiatus\, the band reformed in 2015 and occasionally play live dates. This short UK tour offers a rare chance to experience the Prolapse live show. Two of the band’s Peel sessions have recently been released on the Precious Recordings of London label\, and Pointless Walks to Dismal Places is re-issued as a double gatefold LP on Optic Nerve Records in July.https://prolapse2.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nYEAH YEAH NOH is an unpop group of some repute\, long trading quietly in a melange of noise and ideas that defies categorisation. It’s DIY pop. It’s post-punk. It’s ‘calor gas psychedelia’. Feel the effect as their guitar pedals and secondhand synthesizer play unexpected melodies in your mind as they relay their stories of consequence and coincidence and mid-air women. John Peel favourites and veterans of three classic BBC sessions back in the day\, Yeah Yeah Noh\, are now championed by Radio 6 Music\, where Marc Riley and Gideon Coe have twice let them loose in the studio.https://yeahyeahnoh.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:SARAH DAVACHI + ANTON LUKOSZEVIEZE
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nSARAH DAVACHIANTON LUKOSZEVIEZEThursday 27 OctoberGrand Junction\, Rowington Cl\, London W2 5TF7.30pm | £16 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/aaa27bd3c37b \n\n\n\nSARAH DAVACHI’s work as a composer and performer of electroacoustic music is concerned with the close intricacies of intimate aural space\, utilizing extended durations and simple harmonic structures that emphasize subtle variations in texture\, overtone complexity\, psychoacoustic phenomena\, temperament and intonation.  Similarly informed by minimalist tenets of the 1960s and 1970s\, baroque leanings toward slow-moving chordal suspensions and experimental production practices of the recording studio environment\, in her sound manifest an experience that lessens apprehension of consonance and dissonance in the likeness of the familiar and the distant.  Davachi has toured extensively across the globe and has shared the stage with artists such as Grouper\, the London Contemporary Orchestra\, William Basinski\, Oren Ambarchi\, Ariel Kalma\, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra\, Jessica Moss\, Donald Buchla\, Alessandro Cortini\, Ian William Craig\, Kara-lis Coverdale\, Aaron Dilloway\, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe\, Ellen Arkbro\, Loren Connors and filmmaker Paul Clipson.  Between 2007 and 2017\, Davachi also had the unique opportunity to work for the National Music Centre in Canada as an interpreter and content developer of their collection of acoustic and electronic keyboard instruments.  She has held artist residencies at The Banff Centre for the Arts (Banff\, Canada)\, STEIM (Amsterdam\, Netherlands)\, WORM (Rotterdam\, Netherlands)\, EMS (Stockholm\, Sweden)\, OBORO (Montréal\, Canada)\, MESS (Melbourne\, Australia)\, and with the Bozzini Quartet (Montréal\, Canada).  Davachi is currently a doctoral candidate in musicology at UCLA – where she works on the aesthetic phenomenology of musical instruments and timbre in popular\, experimental\, and early music – and is based in Los Angeles\, California. Davachi’s new album ‘Two Sisters’ will be released through her own Late Music imprint on September 9th.https://www.sarahdavachi.com/ \n\n\n\nANTON LUKOSZEVIEZE plays the cello\, an interdisciplinary artist\, composer\, and founder/director of Apartment House. SUMMARY:KAPUTT + CHARLÈNE DARLING + SHAKE CHAIN
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nKAPUTTCHARLÈNE DARLINGSHAKE CHAINTuesday 25 OctoberThe Shacklewell Arms\, 71 Shacklewell Lane\, Dalston\, London\, E8 2EB7.30pm | £8 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Me65df16dada \n\n\n\nKAPUTT are a completely\, utterly broken\, post-punk act from Glasgow\, Scotland\, coming to you via Upset the Rhythm. Racing away from the playful torn edge of no-wave song\, Kaputt blurt out tracks with twitchy charisma\, their catchy riffs circle with relish\, allowing timely sax stonks and stop-start rhythms to drive things on. Vocals leap\, guitars bluster\, and the saxophone snakes are hypnotically drawn through the erratic beat. There’s a riot of fun at play in their febrile racket\, but there are also some deeply cerebral grooves and choice lyrical concerns evident too. Once described as “Like SesameStreet”\, the group continues to strive forward and prove this statement correct. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://kaputt1.bandcamp.com/\n\n\n\n\nCHARLÈNE DARLING lives in Paris and makes off-kilter\, shimmering chanson post-punk that connects the dots between the feminist troubadours of Agnès Varda’s L’Une Chante\, L’Autre Pas\, Thai molam music\, The Raincoats and the way Cate Le Bon slides between bucolic melody and clanging post-punk. Her debut album\, Saint-Guidon\, was one of 2019’s buried treasures! When entering the funny world of Charlène Darling\, you will first notice that nothing is square\, yet everything seems in its right place. Her solo set (presented here) is all about love\, rhythm and voice\, a frontal topic and a minimalist setup – drum and vocals – that leads to a surprisingly full and energetic sound. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://charlenedarling.bandcamp.com/\n\n\n\n\nSHAKE CHAIN is a 4-piece experimental group formed by artist Kate Mahony (Vocals)\, Joe Fergey (Drums)\, Robert Eyres (Guitar/Synth) and Chris Hopkins (Bass/Synth)\, hailing from Bournemouth\, London and Oxford. Formed through a love of thought-provoking performance art and a yearning for disruption\, they recorded their debut EP ‘Neil Yonge and Bob Doylan Live at Hyde Park’ in 2019 with sound artist David Carugo at Oxford Brookes University\, released by Permanent Slump. Shake Chain provide a fusion of post-punk grooves\, noise samples and chaotic lamenting on the current state of things. Look out for their debut album on Upset The Rhythm later this year. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://katemahony.com/Shake-Chain

SUMMARY:LIIEK + MILTOWN + BADABOUM
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nLIIEKMILTOWNBADABOUMThursday 20 OctoberNew River Studios\, 199 Eade Rd\, Harringay\, London\, N4 1DN7.30pm | £7.00 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Xc2f14f7e2f0 \n\n\n\nLIIEK is an austere and choppy post-punk trio from Berlin playing bass-driven songs like Gang Of Four\, Pylon and Delta 5. The songs may coalesce around the funk-and-dub-informed low-end\, however\, these grooves contrast with angular guitar lines and shouted\, staccato vocals\, both of which remind us of early Devo. Their latest album ‘Deep Pore’ came out earlier this year on Adagio830. Think Q And Not U meets Wire featuring members of Peeps of Pigeon\, Ostseetraum\, Aus etc.https://liiek.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nMILTOWN comes out of the buzzing underground of Denmark’s “little brother” city\, Aarhus.Inspired by the never-ending stream of bands from Melbourne and oddballs from the American Midwest\, Miltown plays garage punk that is both abrasive\, aggressive\, catchy and accessible simultaneously. Their live performances are captivating and chaotic\, a rare display of anger and frailty that leaves you puzzled\, thrilled and anxious to start a band of your own. This fall sees the band embark on their first European tour following the release of their first single ‘Respect for Authorities’.https://miltownband.bandcamp.com/releases \n\n\n\nBADABOUM are a french all-star girl group that includes Krine (Headwar)\, Armelle (The Dreams) and Solene (Dudu geva) and is affiliated with the famous Grande Triple Alliance de l’Est posse (Ah Kraken\, Feeling of love\, Scorpion Violente). They play a form of post-punk music akin to Liliput/Kleenex and Malaria\, adding their own reverbed idiosyncracies and eerie organ lines\, chanting in indecipherable Italian\, mock german and plain french. Taking turns on drums and blowing through severed reeds\, Badaboum will bring you as much joy as chaos and spookiness.https://bancampbadaboum.bandcamp.com

SUMMARY:CURRENT AFFAIRS + ES
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nCURRENT AFFAIRSESWednesday 19 OctoberMascara Bar\, 72 Stamford Hill\, London\, N16 6XS\, UK7.30pm | £8.00 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Qafa677add88 \n\n\n\nCURRENT AFFAIRS are a band from Glasgow marrying 80s pop sensibilities with ferocious post-punk\, neatly navigating the line between new wave and goth. Singer and keyboardist Joan Sweeney (Aggi Doom\, the Royal We) tempts you with catchy melodies and powerful lyricism.  Drummer Andrew Milk (Shopping\, Pink Pound) provides nonchalant backing vocals and a solid rhythm section with driving bass from newest band member Gemma Fleet (The Wharves\, Order of the Toad). Sebastian Yami (Comidllo Tapes\, Pissy) completes the ensemble with an intricate chorus-laden guitar that will lift you off your feet. The band’s recent LP Object & Subject’ (on Tough Love) is the accumulation of the band’s output over three years\, now gathered and synthesised into one convenient disc. A debut LP proper is being readied currently!https://currentaffairs.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nES is Maria Cecilia Tedemalm (vocals)\, Katy Cotterell (bass)\, Tamsin M. Leach (drums) and Flora Watters (keyboards). Their 2016 debut EP\, Object Relations\, released on influential London punk label La Vida Es Un Mus\, was described as “mutant synth-punk for our dystopian present” (Jess Skolnik\, Bandcamp\, Pitchfork). The band has since become a vital presence in London’s underground DIY music scene\, and has toured the UK with the Thurston Moore Group in 2017. ‘Less of Everything. The title of Es’ first full-length LP (on Upset The Rhythm) could be interpreted as a manifesto pledge\, an outright demand or a purely literal sonic descriptor of the London quartet’s glacial form of punk rock music. This tension between intent and interpretation has been a fundamental element of the group’s output from their formation. The dynamic between Cotterell’s bass and Watters’ keyboard is at the heart of Es’ sound: intertwining sub-zero melodies\, gothic anarcho-punk influences and some kind of entirely unlocatable aquatic component. Combined with Leach’s precise drumming\, the outcome is original and immediately recognisable. This provides the perfect backdrop for Tedemalm’s relentless\, pointed vocal style. While comparable ‘cold’ sounding groups might affect an impersonal\, safer mode of lyrical or vocal detachment\, Tedemalm’s strategy is to “push the lyrics as far as I can thematically until they become absurd … overly dramatic … while still being sincere in the feeling they’re trying to invoke. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://esband.bandcamp.com/

After the band’s breakup in 1979\, she continued her career as a solo artist\, releasing a collaborative single with Ryuichi Sakamoto in 1980 and her first solo album\, ‘Phew’\, with Conny Plank\, Holger Czukay of CAN\, and Jaki Liebezeit in 1981. In 1992\, her third album\, OurLikeness\, was released on MUTE\, again at Conny’s studio\, with Jaki Liebezeit of CAN\, Alexander Hacke of Einstürzende Neubauten\, and Chrislo Haas of DAF. This is THE best way to meet confident\, gorgeous\, like-minded single femme lesbian and bisexual women just like you… and this is the perfect opportunity for you to grab a date for those Halloween parties coming soon. She has also released collaborative works with Ana da Silva (Raincoats)\, Seiichi Yamamoto (Boredoms) and others. Phew’s expansive album ‘Vertical Jamming’ is being released on vinyl for the first time via Disciples on 28 October\, a special run on clear vinyl housed in a Studio Tape-Echo sleeve. A small number of advance copies will be on sale at this London show.https://phewjapan.bandcamp.com/music \n\n\n\nMODEL HOME is a hyper prolific experimental hip-hop formation from Washington D.C.\, instigated by rapper NappyNappa and producer Pat Cain. The duo recruits an ever-changing cast of collaborators to give each record a new feel: Model Home can sound like a post-modern take on old-school hip-hop\, glitchy noise or even improvised exploration. The gist of Model Home is that the music pours out like a faucet\, faithfully channelling the chaos of everyday thought. Model Home’s music would blend right in with a dystopia. The deteriorating sounds of Patrick Cain’s electronics would be impossible to distinguish from the constant construction that is the score of any contemporary city; NappyNappa’s enigmatic missives would be lost in the roar of public service announcements\, personalized advertisements\, and omnipresent sirens. Built on the edifice of dub sound systems and DIY basement clatter\, their sound comprises slabs of textured noise and decayed vocals. Disciples just released the duo’s sensational new album ‘Saturn In The Basement’ and its companion cassette; go seek!https://modelhomedc.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:Jenny Moore + Evadney
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nJENNY MOOREEVADNEY \n\n\n\nTuesday 13 SeptemberServant Jazz Quarters\, 10A Bradbury Street\, Dalston\, London\, N16 8JN7.30pm | £8 | Tickets: https://dice.fm/bundles/jenny-moore-in-london-3orl \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJENNY MOORE is a composer\, singer\, drummer\, performance artist and choir leader. Her London-based six-piece choral-punk ensemble Jenny Moore’s Mystic Business is known for their tuned percussion\, huge vocals and chanted soulful mantras\, a mix of the 90’s R&B and post-punk Jenny grew up listening to in the Canadian prairies. Their new EP\, “He Earns Enough\,” was released on Lost Map Records in 2021.Moore founded the alternative feminist choir F*Choir\, composing and arranging for a diverse group of singers using non-gendered voice parts\, graphic scores\, and no auditions to create highly energetic\, rhythmic and political music. She’s played in bands like the dance-punk trio Charismatic Megafauna and Bas Jan committed to DIY and collective processes towards making and distributing music\, workshops\, artworks and performances. She has a monthly radio show on Soho Radio called ‘Hitting Things’ and co-founded Bedfellows\, a queer feminist sex education project. This performance will showcase Jenny Moore’s new set of piano songs\, recently recorded at St Barnabas Church (Dalston) and available soon through Lost Map\, and will feature members of her band Jenny Moore’s Mystic Business and her punk choir F*Choir.https://jennymoore.bandcamp.com/music \n\n\n\nEVADNEY captured his own outsider experience with his two stunning EPs of poetic electronic-pop odysseys on Black Acre Records. Led by his unique vocals\, the politics of sexuality\, identity and Evadney’s intersectionality are played out across cinematic pieces of work. Growing up in the UK in a Caribbean family\, Evadney’s sound has been shaped by his love of bold artists like Bjork\, Kate Bush and Grace Jones\, and he later studied the likes of John Cale\, Stockhausen and Musique concrete during his MA in Music Composition at Goldsmiths University.https://evadney.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:MAX TUNDRA + BAS JAN + GUS BONITO (DJ Set)
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nMAX TUNDRABAS JANGUS BONITO (DJ Set)Friday 2 SeptemberThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB7.30pm | £12 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Ka0f9869d209 \n\n\n\nMAX TUNDRA\, aka Ben Jacobs\, is a master of delightfully inscrutable\, slyly tuneful electronic pop. His three albums recorded for Domino Records between 2000-2008 echo throughout much of contemporary pop music. The first of the trilogy\, Some Best Friend You Turned Out To Be\, is more or less the most experimental; the second\, Mastered By Guy At The Exchange\, perhaps the most joyful; and the third\, Parallax Error Beheads You\, the most riotous. All three albums remain essential\, and three are being reissued by Domino this summer! A remix mixtape entitled Remixtape featuring the likes of Julia Holter and Kero Kero Bonito will also arrive alongside the reissues on August 12th. The hyper pop pioneer has collaborated with the likes of Arca\, Daphne & Celeste and A. G. Cook. The natural musical predecessor to the likes of PC Music\, Max Tundra also boasts a remix roster which includes Pet Shop Boys\, The Strokes and Franz Ferdinand. Join us for a very special concert from Max Tundra to celebrate these reissues on September 2nd\, to the very day the exact 20th anniversary of landmark album release ‘Mastered By Guy At The Exchange’.https://www.maxtundra.com/ \n\n\n\nBAS JAN is a London-based ensemble; this year\, they returned with an expanded line-up and a much-anticipated second album ‘Baby U Know’ (Lost Map). It is the follow-up to the critically acclaimed 2018 debut album Yes I Jan\, which was hailed for its “messy majesty” (Uncut) and “beautifully fractured art-pop” (Mojo). Bas Jan was co-founded in 2015 by songwriter\, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Serafina Steer. The band features Emma Smith (Jarv Is\, Meilyr Jones\, Seamus Fogarty and founder member of the Elysian Quartet) on violin\, bass and electronics\, Rachel Horwood (Trash Kit\, Bamboo\, Jenny Moore’s Mystic Business) on drums and Charlie Stock on electric violin.https://basjan.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:Deerhoof + Sacred Paws
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nDEERHOOFSACRED PAWSWednesday 31 AugustElectric Ballroom\, 184 Camden High St\, Camden\, London\, NW1 8QP\, UK7pm | £17 | Tickets:  https://link.dice.fm/pc5188b40f90 \n\n\n\nDEERHOOF have continually quested for daring storytelling and radical sounds over their eighteen boundless albums\, as experimental as they are pop. 2020’s critically acclaimed\, overwhelmingly prescient Future Teenage Cave Artists explored fairytale visions of post-apocalypse\, welding intrinsic melodies with absurdist digital recording methods. Its immediate sequel Love-Lore\, a live covers medley\, channeled futurist mid-century artists—Parliament\, Sun Ra and Stockhausen\, to name a handful— into a patchwork love letter to the anti-authoritarian expressions that inspire the band. \n\n\n\nDeerhoof’s latest\, Actually\, You Can\, is a genre-abundant record that uses technicolor vibrancy and arpeggiated muscularity to offer a vital shock from capitalism’s purgatorial hold. The band says\, “Think of all the beauty\, positivity and love that gets deemed ugly\, negative and hateful by the self-proclaimed guardians of ‘common sense.’ We’d hardly be destroying society by dismantling their colonial economics and prisons and gender roles and aesthetics. We’d be creating it!” \n\n\n\n\nhttps://deerhoof.bandcamp.com/\n\n\n\n\nSACRED PAWS are a fantastic\, intuitive dream punk duo\, comprising Eilidh Rodgers of Golden Grrls on drums\, and Rachel Aggs from Trash Kit and Shopping on guitar. Raw Soweto high-life riffs and rolling Afrobeat grooves are filtered through post-punk sass and ramshackle K Records charm. It’s an utterly joyous sound\, the duo trading giddy melodies and righteous chants over febrile rhythms and chunky\, infectious riffage. Rock Action released the band’s debut album ‘Strike A Match’ in 2017 and it received a slew of incredible reviews from the likes of Q\, DIY\, Clash\, Loud & Quiet\, The Skinny and was voted Scottish Album of the Year too! In 2019 they followed that up with ‘Run Around The Sun’ (out May 31st on Merge / Rock Action) brimming with upbeat reflections on growing up and looking back. \n\n\n\nhttp://www.sacredpaws.co.uk/

SUMMARY:KATE STABLES + GINA BIRCH + BAS JAN + ROZI PLAIN (DJ set)
DESCRIPTION:KATE STABLES has been making music since the 00s with her band This Is The Kit\, which all started when she moved to Bristol and started playing and collaborating with local musicians. This Is The Kit have created a name for themselves with songs that untangle emotional knots and weave remarkable stories. Now four albums in\, and based in Paris\, the story of This Is The Kit is itself one of time and change and listeners. It has carried Kate Stables from Winchester to Bristol to Paris\, across tours and festivals and the admiration of critics and her peers. Among these are Sharon Van Etten\, The National (Aaron Dessner appears multiple times on Moonshine Freeze)\, Chris Thile (of Nickel Creek\, Punch Brothers\, and now the host of A Prairie Home Companion)\, as well as Guy Garvey and much of BBC 6Music. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://thisisthekit.co.uk/\n\n\n\n\nGINA BIRCH released her first-ever solo single last year on Third Man Records called ‘Feminist Song’. Gina Birch is a founding member of Dorothy\, The Hangovers and The Raincoats. Gina was also a member of Red Crayola when Mayo Thompson asked her to contribute to their ‘Kangaroo’ album. ‘Feminist Song’ made its way into recent Raincoats gigs and Gina’s longtime collaborator and fellow Raincoat Ana da Silva contributes monotron on this recording. Gina performs solo using film and video projections with a sound that she augments live with guitar and vocals.http://www.ginabirch.net/theginabirchexperience/front_page.html \n\n\n\nBAS JAN are a London-based ensemble\, this year they returned with an expanded line-up and a much-anticipated second album ‘Baby U Know’ (Lost Map). SUMMARY:THE MONOCHROME SET + THE MINDREADERS + DEE BYRNE & CATH ROBERTS
DESCRIPTION:THE MONOCHROME SET are a highly influential English new wave band\, originally formed in London in 1978 by Bid (vocals & guitar)\, Lester Square (lead guitar)\, and J D Haney (from The Art Attacks\, on drums).  In 1979\, they signed to Rough Trade and released three singles\, “He’s Frank”\, “Eine Symphonie Des Grauens”\, and “The Monochrome Set”. They released their debut studio album\, “Strange Boutique”\, produced by Bob Sargeant in 1980. Their classic follow-up album\, “Love Zombies”\, was produced by Alvin Clark and the band\, later that same year.  In 2018\, the 40th year since the band formed\, their 14th studio album\, “Maisieworld” and a box set\, “The Monochrome Set 1979–1985: Complete Recordings”\, was released. The group’s most recent album ‘Allhallowtide’ was released earlier this year.http://www.themonochromeset.co.uk/ \n\n\n\nTHE MINDREADERS are Richard Ipaint on vocals and drums\, Sexton Ming on vocals\, sfx and guitar\, and Russ Wilkins on vocals and guitar\, with all three on songwriting duty too. Fans of The Pop Rivets\, The Milkshakes\, The Natural Born Lovers\, Rocking Richard\, The Delmonas\, Auntie Vegetable\, The Wildebeests and more will know all about them. Debut album ‘Ban The Mindreader’ was released in 1987 on Russ’ Empire Records label\, with some extra gig recordings to bulk it out. Some of the gig recordings also found their way to the Medway Powerhouse compilations on Hangman Records. Fast forward 30 years\, Russ and Richard realised they only lived 25 miles apart in Scotland\, and now much wiser\, a connection was made from Sexton (now also much wiser) who wanted to do something dim and simple. A gig was arranged in Hastings which led on to more gigs! Following on from the gigs\, they convened in a garage and recorded some songs over two days onto a Tascam 8 track\, 1/2” recorder\, playing whatever they felt worked\, recording over twenty tracks. The fruits from this labour were released last year by Spinout Nuggets as the LP ‘Continuation’.https://soundcloud.com/spinoutnuggets/sets/the-mindreaders-continuation \n\n\n\nDEE BYRNE & CATH ROBERTS released their first album on Luminous in 2020. Mixed by Alex Bonney\, Disembark! is a series of short acoustic improvisations recorded at Gun Factory Studios. Disembark! is a series of short\, spontaneous improvisations that explore a dramatic range of textures\, whilst maintaining the sense of an ongoing\, inquisitive conversation. The recording came about after a series of live duo performances; going into the studio seemed like the next logical step.https://luminouslabel.bandcamp.com/album/disembark

SUMMARY:WRECKLESS ERIC + MEATRAFFLE + LILITH AI
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm & Hello Goodbye present… \n\n\n\nHG20 : ‘A fundraiser celebrating 20 years of Hello Goodbye and Resonance FM’ \n\n\n\nWRECKLESS ERICMEATRAFFLELILITH AISaturday 30 JulyMOTH Club\, Old Trades Hall\, Valette St\, London\, E9 6NU7.30pm – 10.30pm | £10 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/N6957a30c1ea \n\n\n\nWRECKLESS ERIC is Eric Goulden. He was given the name to hide behind. After a while he realized he was stuck with it. Onstage he hides behind nothing\, he tells the truth with big open chords\, lilting enchantment\, squalls of feedback\, dissonance\, bizarre stories and backchat. Eric began his recording life on Stiff Records in 1977 with his enduring hit Whole Wide World when he was little more than an ex-teenage art student. Eventually he sidestepped the mechanics of stardom to become Britain’s biggest underground household name\, much loved and often underestimated. His 2015 album ‘amERICa’ reminded those who’ve kept the faith and new generations of fans what he’s all about. He won’t recreate 1978 for you\, he’ll blow your mind instead. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://wrecklesseric.com/\n\n\n\n\nMEATRAFFLE is a common chord running through the leftist brigades of the South London art scene. For Meatraffle it is the political\, the platonic\, the comradeship of the struggle that provides true artistic grist.https://meatraffle1917.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nLILITH AI is a guitarist\, who writes and performs poignant tales of modern life. Hailing from nowhere special\, Lilith began releasing lo-fi bedroom recordings in 2016. Her first EP RIOT is full of underground anthems popular with Riot grrrls word wide. Her second EP Native Tongue chronicles her teen years\, spent living on the streets of Queens New York. 2019 saw the release of 3rd EP Bare Radical with evolving sounds.  Lilith’s artfully delivered songs fit somewhere between indie pop and anti-folk.https://lilithai.bandcamp.com/music

SUMMARY:QUINTRON & MISS PUSSYCAT + BRUNO AND THE OUTRAGEOUS METHODS OF PRESENTATION
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents…. \n\n\n\nQUINTRON & MISS PUSSYCATBRUNO AND THE OUTRAGEOUS METHODS OF PRESENTATIONTuesday 12 July
The Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB
7.30pm | £12 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/x2ade9b7daea \n\n\n\nQUINTRON & MISS PUSSYCAT have been making genre-defying noise and hard rocking dance music in New Orleans for over twenty years. The majority of their 17 full-length albums have the psychedelic soul of traditional New Orleans party music\, filtered through a vintage Hammond B-3\, technicolor puppets\, and a battalion of distorted\, homemade instruments. This summer\, the duo will be joined on tour by two New Orleans musicians\, drummer Sam Yoger and “talk boxer” Benni Divine\, to recreate their most recent Goner LP\, ‘Goblin Alert’ as well as butchering the best of the old songs. The Quintron / Miss Pussycat experience is one of barely controlled electronic chaos\, “Swamp-Tech” dance beats\, small explosions\, incredible clothes\, and entertaining puppet stories. \n\n\n\nQuintron and Miss Pussycat’s sweaty musical blasts are paralleled in spirit and performance by Miss Pussycat’s dreamy puppet worlds – elaborate\, and beautifully crafted for success in intimate venues of late- night drinking and dancing. She has also had several major solo museum exhibitions and\, although the puppets are never for sale\, ceramics\, paintings and other visual work related to her puppetry\, are represented by the Webb Gallery in Waxahachie Texas.http://www.quintronandmisspussycat.com/ \n\n\n\nBRUNO AND THE OUTRAGEOUS METHODS OF PRESENTATION is a situationist / aktionist un-group masterminded by the precocious teenage brat Bruno Bof Wilkinson. Bruno is a multi-faceted neuro-amazing proto-superstar\, splatter-gunning golden gems of power-pop\, garage-punk\, nihilistic electro-void darkness and plain super-catchy teeth-rattlers. Created in Bristol in 2006 from Brazilian/English motherfatherlodes he’s played with The Nightingales\, Damo Suzuki\, Adulkt Life\, Babyshakes\, Beak and a whole bunch more. You can see him fronting his own band\, The Outrageous Methods Of Presentation\, guesting with Bristol garage indie-punk legends Bucky\, fronting Bath oi-punks Shiner and occasionally bursts to the front of the stage to guest with Alter Moderns. Bruno appeals to fans of Crime\, Jonathan Richman\, Guided By Voices\, Electric Eels\, The Kinks\, Television\, The Stooges\, Swell Maps and Huggy Bear! \n\n\n\n\nhttps://outrageousmethodsofpresentation.bandcamp.com/
