SUMMARY:Turning Earth Summer Solstice Social
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, Turning Earth invites you to mark the longest day of the year with an unforgettable celebration of creativity\, connection\, and craft. On Saturday\, 21st June 2025\, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM\, Turning Earth Leyton will host the Summer Solstice Social — a vibrant\, hands-on event open to studio members\, students past and present\, and the general public. \nHeld in honour of the Summer Solstice\, a day traditionally associated with abundance\, growth\, and renewal\, the event celebrates the ancient art of pottery and its power to bring people together. Whether you have some previous experience or you are a complete beginner\, you’ll find something to spark your creativity and enjoy the day.  \nThe day’s programme includes: \n\nHandbuilding workshops (ticketed\, 11 AM and 1 PM): in Sweden\, there’s a very sweet tradition on Midsummer Night\, to pick 7 flowers from 7 meadows\, put them under your pillow while you sleep\, and supposedly you’ll dream about the person you’ll marry. To celebrate this tradition with us\, our lovely Swedish Hanna will guide you to sculpt some wonderful flowers.\nLive Raku-style pottery firings (ticketed\, 11.30 AM and 1.30 PM): you will glaze some of our pre-made vases with special Raku glazes\, then you will assist the exciting and fiery firing. By the end of the session\, your piece will be ready to be taken home.\nThrowing drop-in sessions (free): if you have never tried pottery before\, this is your chance to have a go on the pottery wheel and feel the clay under your hands (and realise how mistakenly simple it seems!)\nA ‘potter’s dream’ raffle (ticketed): with goodie bags of the value £150-£220 from our sponsors Potclays\, Hartley & Noble\, and Glost Glaze. You just need to try your luck!\nA communal pot: one single big community pot\, to which any guest can contribute to with coils and decorations\, helping us create a keepsake of the event\, to be permanently displayed in the studio.\nLive music and drinks throughout the day\, from bubbles to the craft beer of the local Neckstamper. Our neighbour Pavilion Bakery will also be open for some sweet or savoury treats.\n\nThe sculpting and Raku firing workshops are expected to fill quickly\, so early booking is recommended.

SUMMARY:Turning Earth Hoxton Spring Market
DESCRIPTION:A new year\, a new market! Turning Earth’s Ceramics Market is back at the Hoxton studio on the weekend of March 22nd and 23rd. With 80 talented makers (different each day) showcasing their handmade pottery\, you’ll discover an array of beautifully crafted\, one-of-a-kind pieces. With Mother’s Day just around the corner\, it’s the ideal opportunity to pick up something special. \nThroughout the weekend\, you’ll be treated to live performances by Jimm\, from the Jazz Cannibals\, whose eclectic sound blends jazz\, rap\, trad\, folk\, reggae\, sea shanty\, punk\, and funk—an unmissable soundtrack to your market experience. \nFeeling peckish? Sourdough Daali\, a micro-bakery and street food pop-up\, will be serving up wood-fired sourdough pizzas alongside irresistible treats like cardamom banana bread and brown butter flapjacks. Meanwhile\, Climpson & Sons will be on hand with expertly brewed barista coffee\, soft drinks\, and their signature Espresso Martini. \nSunday\, March 23rd\, brings an extra special guest – Victor Ng\, one of the participants of the current edition of The Great Pottery Throw Down. He’ll be showcasing and selling his work\, and if you’re lucky\, he might share some behind-the-scenes stories from the show\, including his proudest (and most disastrous) moments—like the time he built and decorated a boat… only for it to explode in the kiln! Originally from Canada\, Victor discovered Turning Earth Hoxton after moving to London in 2021 and has been a dedicated maker ever since\, with a passion for throwing delightfully wacky vases. \nAlso joining us on Sunday are some of the East End Trades Guild makers\, an alliance of 300 independent East London businesses and self-employed artisans (including Turning Earth). Their presence brings a diverse range of handmade goods beyond ceramics\, all created with the same care and craftsmanship. The EETG works to protect and sustain local businesses\, ensuring that London’s creative community continues to thrive.

SUMMARY:Turning Earth Highgate Autumn Market
DESCRIPTION:Treasure-hunt handmade ceramics and watch a Roman Kiln Replica firing \n  \nAfter a short summer break\, Turning Earth’s Ceramics Market returns to the Highgate studio on the weekend of September 21st and 22nd. With 120 different makers offering their handmade pieces over the weekend\, you can expect to find some crafted and unique treasures. Make sure to visit on both days\, as there will be 60 different makers on each!  \n  \nAll the ingredients for the best weekend out are there: handmade goods\, live music\, street food\, pottery demonstrations\, and\, the cherry on top\, a Roman kiln firing!  \n  \nOn Saturday\, the market will be enlivened with the music of critically acclaimed folk singer-songwriter Theo Bard. On Sunday\, composer Jimm from the Jazz Cannibals will be back with his eclectic style\, a mix of jazz\, rap\, trad\, folk\, reggae\, sea-shanty\, punk\, and funk. \n  \nSourdough Daali\, a micro-bakery and street food pop-up\, will let you indulge in some hearty sourdough focaccia sarnies – grilled cheese and lamb shawarma\, French-onion black daal and baked goods such as cardamom banana bread and brown butter flapjacks. Next to them\, Nuun Cakes will offer a specially curated menu of cake boxes\, serving their artisanal sponges\, signature toppings\, and unique flavour combos. Last but not least\, Handles Coffee will have barista coffees. \n  \nFor those curious about the art of ceramics\, our teachers and technicians will give wheel-throwing demonstrations\, providing a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process and showing you what you might learn in one of our courses. \n  \nThe pottery-history of Highgate Woods \nBetween 50AD-150AD\, a ‘Roman’ pottery manufacturing site was periodically active amongst the Oaks and Hornbeams (now Highgate Woods). During the 1960s and ’70s\, Harvey Sheldon and Tony Brown\, co-directors\, worked with many volunteer archaeologists to excavate this unique setting. Ten kilns were found during the excavations\, with countless pottery sherds and rare complete pots. One kiln\, lifted in 1968\, is currently being restored for exhibition in the Woods in September. The most famous pottery forms found are the humble and intimately shaped ‘Poppyhead beakers’\, with their Barbotine-style dots and slip decoration. Since the kilns’ discovery\, there has been tremendous energy from local heritage councils and charities to raise awareness of the rich history that flows through these hills. Most notable is the charity ‘Friends of Highgate Roman Kilns’ (FoHRK)\, which Turning Earth has teamed up with to expand on the pottery-making efforts and bring the local clay to local makers.   \n  \nTurning Earth celebrates local pottery heritage.  \nOver the last year\, we have built a relationship with FoHRK and gained permission to experiment with the local clay-rich deposits. With the Woods being steeped in pottery-making heritage from the 1st and 2nd centuries\, it’s only fitting that the first pottery site to open in these hills in nearly 2000 years should make efforts to return to the heritage of the Highgate area. \nOn the 12-15th of August 2024\, part of our team and volunteers from the FoHRK built a replica of an ancient Roman Kiln just on a corner of the Cricket Field in the Highgate Woods and next to the Cafe and the Education Hub.  \nOn the same weekend of the market\, on the 21st and 22nd of September\, the volunteers of FoHRK\, their partners Bruce Castle Museum and the City of London and we will light up this kiln with an experimental wood firing\, using wood from the surrounding area and the pots made by local potters with the clay we dug in the previous month. The firing will be open to the public on both days and it’s a unique experience to watch. The kiln will be packed early on Saturday\, and the firing will start just after\, burning for the whole day. After cooling down for an evening\, the kiln will be unpacked on Sunday afternoon\, around 4 pm (weather-dependent).  \nThis will also be an opportunity to educate the public on the rich history of Highgate Wood and to see the original 2000-year-old Roman kiln conserved and brought back to the woods for the first time since its discovery. \n  \nTurning Earth’s mission has always been to make ceramics and pottery accessible to the public. Working with clay has proven mental health benefits and a natural way to unite communities. As a pottery studio\, we continuously celebrate our human history by moulding the earth into art and useful vessels\, following the footsteps of many before us\, and continuing this heritage craft. We believe in our studios’ social power and ability to bring people together. We are proud to be growing roots in the surrounding woodlands and bringing our passion for ceramics to the local communities with these public firing events with our friends at FoHRK. We think this to be an important site not only for historians and archaeologists but also for makers and craft-oriented individuals who thirst to learn about the history of pottery.  \n  \nAbout Turning Earth Ceramics \nTurning Earth is London’s largest co-work ceramics studio complex\, now spanning three hobbyist studios (Hoxton\, Leyton\, and Highgate) and one professional studio in Leyton\, In Production. SUMMARY:Turning Earth Highgate Ceramics Market
DESCRIPTION:Turning Earth opens its fourth London ceramics centre  – this time in Highgate – with a weekend maker market on 15/16 October.  Nose around the beautifully renovated 1930s industrial building complete with a contemplative garden\, and browse work from a hundred of London’s up-and-coming ceramicists.\n \nWith regular visitors\, including celebrity chefs Nigella Lawson and Yotam Ottolenghi\, the Turning Earth market is in the vanguard of a maker movement that\, despite many recent shocks to small industry\, continues to grow.\n \nShow solidarity with local makers as they express their creativity in the face of the energy crisis and rub off some of the peace that comes with working with the calming medium of clay. As usual\, there’ll be street food and live Klezmer music\, and – inspired by the Spring’s #CookForUkraine campaign – this time\, they’ll sell specially donated wares to raise money for displaced children supported by UNICEF as part of  #MakeForUkraine.\n

SUMMARY:Turning Earth Haringey Christmas Ceramics Market
DESCRIPTION:Christmas Ceramics Market\nOn 18/19 December we will hold the inaugural Christmas Ceramics Market at the new Turning Earth ceramics centre in Haringey. The new studio will bring the Turning Earth model established in Hoxton and Leyton to North London for the very first time\, offering a gym-like monthly membership arrangement for people who want to take up ceramics as a serious hobby\, as well as introductory classes for beginners.\nDuring the celebratory Christmas market weekend\, 70 ceramicists from Turning Earth’s studios will sell their work\, and there will be wheel-throwing and hand-building demos throughout – with the option for visitors to have a go too.\nMakers will share their reflections on how the disruption of the pandemic has impacted their work and celebrate some of the positive things it has brought with it. The new Turning Earth centre was itself created in a rising tide of craft participation and in response to the increasing desire for people to live and stay local and invest in the communities on their doorsteps.\nA stall selling donated work will raise money for local charities. There’ll also be delicious Vietnamese Street food from Hanoi Ca Phe\, mulled wine and mince pies\, klezmer from The Turbans and carols from Davey Green.\nCome and buy last-minute Christmas presents\, and prepare to be inspired – who knows\, you may want to come back and get your hands in clay yourself.

SUMMARY:Turning Earth - Ceramics Market in Leyton
DESCRIPTION:The much-loved Winter Ceramics Market will return to Turning Earth’s Leyton studio on Saturday 4th and 5th December 2021. More than 70 ceramicists will sell their work directly from the studio\, and there will be wheel-throwing and hand-building demos throughout the weekend – with the option for visitors to have a go too. \nA charity stall selling donated work will again raise money for charity Help Refugees. There’ll also be delicious Vietnamese Street food from Hanoi Ca Phe\, mulled wine and mince pies\, as well as live klezmer from members of the much-loved festival band The Turbans\, and folk music from Davey Green. Alongside the market\, a host of neighbouring artists\, photographers\, furniture makers and designers on the Argall Avenue industrial estate will open their doors so you can explore their studios. \nOne of the gifts of the pandemic has been in showing people what they most value\, which became strikingly apparent when so much of life was restricted. People tried crafts in more significant numbers than ever before during the lockdowns\, but the move online deprived everyone of the tactile experience of buying work directly from the maker. In what promises to be an inspiring reunion of makers and ceramics lovers\, you can expect to see pieces made with kitchen implements when our makers couldn’t leave their homes\, among the many creative ideas refined in lockdown. Like so many independent artisans\, ceramicists have suffered badly because so many outlets for their work have been closed over the past two years – buying independent at Christmas shoppers can help keep the craft alive.
