SUMMARY:‘A Strange Intimacy’ - Resolution @ThePlace
DESCRIPTION:A man. A woman. And a relationship that’s got stuck. It needs a reboot or\, rather\, a boot up the arse. They’ve tried switching it off and on again\, but that didn’t work. So it’s time to get creative – to renegotiate\, fight their corner\, state their case.\nDrawing on Sarah Kent’s experience of improvised performance and devising (both for her own and other choreographer’s pieces)\, this work was created through improvisation and then set for performance.\nThe process could be playful and fun or mean and nasty – a roller coaster ride to hell and back that gets physical but is bound to achieve results. Will the outcome be the one they want\, though? Enjoy the ride; it will be gloriously bumpy!\nPart of a Resolution evening with\n– Mad Jacks Theatre’s ‘ACNE ROMEO’\, a thrilling and messy dance-theatre translation of Sam Smith’s frightening new play. Boy and girl meet in a violent world. It’s a collision course. A riot. This has to be a love story.\n– Yoncali McCredie’s ‘Another Day of Loving’\nRaw and tender dance theatre by award-winning filmmakers Maya Yoncali and Andy McCredie. Another Day Of Loving is a romantic and honest approach to grief in a relationship\, exposing what it means to be in love in the aftermath of death. Churning between techno and 1960s Hollywood film scores\, the piece ricochets through the character’s bodies and inner turmoil to present a heartfelt narrative of love and loss.

SUMMARY:"Adam"\, Resolution Festival 2025
DESCRIPTION:Adam is a self-choreographed solo by Harry Theadora Foster\, being performed as part of a triple bill at Resolution Festival.  \nA body learns he’s alive. A child learns his favourite dance. An adult learns who he might have been.  \nA story of discovery culminates in a conversation between these beings across one body.   \nWhat would they tell each other if given the chance? \nIn a spellbinding journey of memory\, trickery and identity\, Harry Theadora Foster connects characters to their own past\, present and future selves. Adam is a testament to the fact that the act of ‘remembering’ is itself an act of imagination- and a tool to help us reimagine who we are now.  \nHarry Theadora Foster (he/him) is a dance artist based in London. Drawing from autobiographical experiences and his practice as a poet\, storytelling is central to his work\, focused on capturing and exploring human experiences.  \nHe has been a dancer with Akram Khan Company since 2022. A graduate of Rambert School\, he has also worked with companies such as Casson and Friends\, Richard Chappell Dance\, James Cousins Company\, and Richard Alston. His work has been staged in the UK at Lilian Bayliss Theatre Sadlers Wells\, Linbury Theatre Royal Opera House\, Anya Linden Studio Theatre\, The Playground Theatre\, and The Point\, Eastleigh.

SUMMARY:Concerto - The Place
DESCRIPTION:Ever since their smash hit Idiot-Syncracy\, the ”hot queer performance mavericks” (The Arts Intel report) Igor x Moreno have established themselves as some of the most entrepreneurial\, influential and innovative artists working in Europe today. \nNow\, following their critically acclaimed BEAT and Karrasekare\, the duo return to The Place with the UK premiere of an earlier work. CONCERTO is both song-writing and choreography. It is Igor x Moreno’s first ‘danza canzone’ — a form inspired by ‘teatro canzone’ made popular by Giorgio Gaber. \nWith a playlist of songs written by Moreno Solinas\, arranged by Simone Sassu and performed live by Moreno Solinas and Igor Urzelai Hernando\, the work is intimate and visually rich\, featuring a live DJ and elaborate costumes by Liborio Capizzi.

SUMMARY:Frame Rush 2024
DESCRIPTION:Screendance Festival at The Place\, Friday 13 September 2024 \nFrame Rush is an annual festival of screendance films programmed by the MA Screendance students from London Contemporary Dance School. The sixth edition centres around what it means to be present in today’s society and is an event not to be missed. A graduate and international programme offer something for all\, whether you are a film nerd\, someone who loves rhythm\, or are seeking creative inspiration from different perspectives.  \nThe Graduate Screening invites audience members to celebrate seven works from the 2023 MA Screendance cohort and former Frame Rush organisers. This programme highlights the supportive learning community and diverse range of subject matter screendance affords\, from surrealist ears to Bauhaus inspired bird watching. \nThe International Screening offers ten works expressing kinaesthetic empathy and questions on belonging. In this series\, sisterhood is expressed within the intersection of fashion\, film and dance; body percussionists move as nomadic storytellers through urban corridors\, neighbourhoods\, and green spaces in Montreal; and the subconscious is brought to life as green and blood lizards perform Palestinian folk songs in a Jazz bar. \nA 30-minute artist Q&A will follow both screenings\, providing audiences with the chance to gain unique insight into the artists’ creative processes.  \nFilms with dialogue include subtitles. \nEvent image credit: Film still from ‘Déjà Nu’ by Rolf Hellat

SUMMARY:Drowntown - Rhiannon Faith Company
DESCRIPTION:Live debut for gritty dance-theatre show DROWNTOWN – holding a tender and honest mirror to a society at tipping point\n\n \n\n2021 and 2022 Double National Dance Awards nominee Rhiannon Faith Company’s new show finally takes to the stage after Covid cancellations\n\n \n\nIn choreographer Rhiannon Faith’s newly staged show DROWNTOWN\, six strangers\, weighed down by individual darkness\, come to a deprived coastal land. Seemingly abandoned\, there is no one to help but themselves. Stuck between the remains of a broken community and the vast bleakness of the sea\, they struggle with isolation\, shame and failed support systems.\n\n \n\nOriginally slated for a live world premiere at London’s Barbican in June 2020 followed by a tour\, DROWNTOWN will finally hit the stage for the first time this autumn\, with more dates in the pipeline for spring 2023.\n\n \n\nTo bridge the gap Faith created a short ‘prequel’ film Drowntown Lockdown followed by a full length Drowntown film. Both were widely and enthusiastically acclaimed by viewers and critics\, but nothing is a substitute for the full live experience. The London premier is at The Place on Thursday 10 November.\n\n \n\n‘a thought-provoking brand of physical theatre that is all Faith’s own’ ★★★★ The Stage (on DROWNTOWN\, the film)\n\n \n\nDark\, uncompromising and moving yet\, accessible\, tender and physically stunning\, DROWNTOWN continues the vein of gritty dance-theatre from this radical choreographer. Bold and brave\, at times bleak (in keeping with its subject matter)\, the show uses autobiographical testimonials and text to give voice to the vulnerable and unheard in modern Britain’s areas of social deprivation. With tenderness and honesty\, the show holds up a mirror to a society at tipping point. DROWNTOWN is here to try to help save our world from drowning.\n\n \n\n‘one of the few UK artists making dance theatre that is pointedly socially conscious’ The Guardian\n\n \n\n‘So many communities are broken\, people are drowning\, so something must be going wrong\,’ said Rhiannon. ‘The conversations have dried up and what exists within us\, wounds and emotion\, just gets pushed down to the sea-bed. I want to reopen those conversations urgently. With the extended and combined fallouts of Covid\, Brexit and the cost of living and energy crises\, DROWNTOWN is\, if anything\, more relevant in 2022 than it was three years ago.’\n\n \n\nWhen originally scheduled and then rescheduled DROWNTOWN was named in the Evening Standard’s eight ‘Best dance shows to see in 2020’ and The Guardian’s top five tips for 2021. See the trailer here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDXXaYZ_Mj8\n\n \n\n‘dance\, participatory theatre and awareness-raising in one welcoming package\,… a party game to help change the world’ ★★★★ The Guardian on Smack That (a conversation)\n\n \n\nBefore creating the show Rhiannon undertook extensive research into areas of social deprivation. ‘I spent research residencies in coastal towns including Jaywick\, Clacton-on-Sea and Great Yarmouth\, all places with a strong sense of community and identity but also some of the highest levels of social and economic deprivation in the UK. Happy destinations for holiday goers that become full of darkness and degradation when left behind’ she added.\n\n \n\nSocial exclusion and isolation are rife in such places with high rates of unemployment\, long-term health problems and high demand on underfunded local services. They also tend to lack frequent and reliable public transport and high-speed internet. Recent research suggests that loneliness can increase the risk of premature death by 30%. Nine million people in the UK say they often feel lonely\, 7% of 18-64 year olds feel socially isolated\, rising to 11% for over 65s.\n\n \n\n‘Inventive and demanding\, immersive … a work of urgent importance.’ ★★★★ The Stage on Smack That (a conversation)\n\n \n\nPerformed and devised with a cast of six (Dominic Coffey\, Sam Ford\, Shelley Eva Haden\, Donald Hutera\, Finetta Oliver-Mikolajska and Marla King) the show shines a light on individual suffering and discusses loneliness\, social isolation\, bereavement and suicide. Suitable for over 16s\, it contains strong language and scenes that some may find upsetting.\n\n \n\nDROWNTOWN is co-produced by Harlow Playhouse. Commissioned by Cambridge Junction with commissioning support from DanceEast. Supported by Brighton Dome and Festival Ltd\, South East Dance\, and using public funding by Arts Council England.\n\n \n\n‘treats its subject matter with huge sensitivity and honesty’ ★★★★ DanceTabs on Smack That (a conversation)\n\n \n\nRhiannon Faith Company makes radically tender dance theatre\, working nationally on big stages and locally with communities on the margins\, always with social change and care at its heart. Based in Harlow\, Essex\, with nation-wide impact\, they are making bold\, ambitious moves to secure a future as global leaders in original dance theatre with a social purpose\, to champion community transformation and authentic belonging for all.\n\nThe company has been nominated for four National Dance Awards; ‘Best Independent Company’ 2021 & 2022\, ‘Best Digital Choreography’ (DROWNTOWN LOCKDOWN) in 2021 and ‘Best Dance Film’ (DROWNTOWN live film) in 2022. In addition\, Rhiannon Faith was nominated for an AWA Women In Dance Leadership Award 2022. www.rhiannonfaith.com
