SUMMARY:Singing With Nightingales: Family
DESCRIPTION:Bring your kids to the woods of Sussex for a beautiful afternoon of nature connection. \n\n\n\nThis May\, join the Nest Collective team for games\, music and folklore by the fireside and a trek into the nightingales’ habitat to hear their incredible song. \n\n\n\nSpend the afternoon ambling through the bluebells of stunning ancient woodland as your host beguiles you with folklore and bird knowledge. Enjoy an afternoon of exploration and playfulness in nature with your whole family. \n\n\n\nWe will gather by the fireside for drinks and snacks before venturing into the woods once more to discover the rare nightingales’ habitat. Once there\, we’ll gather gently close by and listen to their unmistakable courtship song. \n\n\n\nJoin us this May for a rare and thrilling journey in the springtime woodlands of Sussex. \n\n\n\nPlease see the ticketing for price options. Under 2s get free entry. \n\n\n\nPlease note that this event is for parents or guardians and their children. \n\n\n\nThe Nightingale \n\n\n\nIn this modern age\, with biodiversity in decline and habitats being eroded\, the Nightingale has become representative of all that we have to lose. \n\n\n\nThe Nightingale is a small\, brown\, unremarkable-looking bird\, but it possesses one of nature’s finest singing voices. The bird winters in Africa but spends April to July mating and nesting in Europe and the Middle East. Worldwide\, the population is healthy\, but the numbers visiting England have declined so sharply that it is now on the UK’s Red List of species of the greatest conservation concern.

SUMMARY:Campfire Club: Bonfire Night
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an alternative Bonfire Night celebration\, in the gardens of a stunning hidden riverside palace. \n\n\n\n\n\nAt the Nest Collective we love nothing more than sharing in the joy of live music outdoors by the fireside. In the simple way that people have done for thousands of years\, we come together around the fire to enjoy music\, food\, drink and the company of others. \nThe Master Shipwright’s is a gorgeous venue in the heart of Deptford\, and many of you will know it as the site of our summer festival each year. Take in the breathtaking\, expansive views across the water as we celebrate Guy Fawkes Night with extraordinary music and storytelling. Catch sight of fireworks erupting around the city from the banks of London’s iconic waterway. \nIf the heat of the fire wasn’t enough\, we’ll also be selling hot food & drinks to keep you warm on this November eve. \nThis event will be hosted by the amazing storyteller Jan Blake. \nJan Blake has been performing worldwide for over twenty-five years. Specialising in stories from Africa\, the Caribbean\, and Arabia\, she has a well-earned reputation for dynamic and generous storytelling. \n‘The people on earth need heat & warmth\, in the form of fire\, but none are brave enough to ascend to the heavens to procure it\, except for Osun\, Goddess of Beauty\, for which must pays a high price.’ \nDrawing on the vast array of myths form the Yoruba tradition\, Jan will share this and other tales of human’s fascination with fire. \nThis event will feature live music from Dizraeli. \nPoet\, producer\, firestarter. Songwriter-MC\, multi instrumentalist-raconteur… Dizraeli is a genre of his own.\nHe’s collaborated with artists as diverse as Kae Tempest\, Jam Baxter and Eliza Carthy in his explorations of the crossover between hiphop\, folk\, bass music and all between.\nHis unswerving devotion to pushing the boundaries of lyricism and musical form has earned him a bona fide cult status among those who know\, and the raw honesty and humour he brings to his writings on his own mental health\, sexuality and the liberation of the human spirit has drawn people together of all shades and ages around his work. \nAnother artist for this event is to be announced.

DESCRIPTION:The Nest Collective invites you to enjoy a beautiful fireside concert with Jacob & Drinkwater. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRediscover one of life’s simplest joys – the sharing of live music in the glow of a campfire. \nEvery summer\, we gather in beautiful green spaces within cities to hear extraordinary music by artists from all over the world. \nIn the simple way that people have done for thousands of years\, we come together around the fire to enjoy music\, food\, drink and the company of others. \nFor this Campfire Club\, we are delighted to present Jacob & Drinkwater. \nDevon-based duo Jacob & Drinkwater have been called ‘stand out new folk’ by BBC 6 Music\, with their live show described as ‘intense and spellbinding’ by Folk Radio UK. The duo formed in 2014\, playing their first gig together at the iconic Glastonbury Festival. \nThe duo’s dynamic and emotionally charged live show\, with all its energy\, musical chemistry and spontaneity\, has drawn comparisons with the virtuosic pairing of John Martyn and Danny Thompson. Jacob’s sweeping vocals never fail to captivate\, delivering many a spine-tingling moment; the fluidity and precision of his finger-picking are underpinned by Drinkwater’s nimbly rhythmic double bass – at times sweetly soaring\, haunting\, and percussive. \n‘Intense and spellbinding’ – Folk Radio UK

SUMMARY:Rowan Rheingans: Dispatches on the Red Dress
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning folk musician\, songwriter and composer Rowan Rheingans brings her courageous solo show Dispatches on the Red Dress to London. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAn intimate and adventurous exploration of memory\, identity\, joy\, sorrow\, trauma-recovery\, war and waltzes\, Dispatches on the Red Dress tells the true story of Rowan’s German grandmother’s youth in 1940’s Germany. \nWith genre-melding fluidity\, Rowan weaves immersive storytelling around 10 new songs (Rowan won ‘Best Original Track’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2016 for her song Mackerel) performed live with fiddle\, banjo\, guitar and subtly inventive use of pre-recorded sounds. \nA recipient of the prestigious Paul Hamlyn Award for Artists in 2021\, Rowan Rheingans is a composer and theatre-maker widely regarded as one of the foremost innovators in UK folk music today. \nBest known for her work with acclaimed bands Lady Maisery and The Rheingans Sisters\, Rowan has won two BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards (‘Best Original Track’ in 2016 & ‘Best Album’ in 2017) and is a six-times nominee. Her duo The Rheingans Sisters were nominated for ‘Best Group’ at the the 2019 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. \nDispatches on the Red Dress\, Rowan’s debut theatre production\, won a Scotsman ‘Fringe First’ Award at the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe Festival as well as nominations in two other categories (The Filipa Braganca Award for Best Emerging Female Artist and the Carol Tambor ‘Best of Edinburgh’ Award). \nIn the current time of deeply felt political tensions and nationalistic fervour gaining pace across Europe\, Dispatches on the Red Dress is a highly resonant and much needed historic provocation for our current political and social climate. Slowly revealing what is at once a warm family story and a troubling elegy on the modern human condition\, Rowan explores how hope for the future may be found in the very darkest pockets of our history. It is Rowan’s most courageous\, most political and most personal work to date. \nDirected\, produced and performed by herself\, Rowan describes what show means to her personally: \n“Hidden in the folds of my own grandmother’s story\, there is a profound darkness alongside a deeply hopeful message about humanity’s capacity for transformation. It feels important\, in our current social and political climate of half-truths and fake news\, that sometimes feels akin to a dangerous forgetting or mis-remembering of history\, to share my family’s story. It is about the peace-making potential of stories…” \nAlready celebrated by music critics as “an excellent songwriter with a fine grasp of the delicate balance of joy and pain that makes us human” (Folk Radio UK)\, Dispatches on the Red Dress takes Rowan’s songwriting and gift as a mesmerising performer to another level. This is adventurous and necessary new writing that asks fundamental and troubling questions with her characteristically ‘deep emotional charge’ (Louder Than War). \nDeveloped in collaboration with dramaturg Liam Hurley (Karine Polwart’s Wind Resistance) the live show brings the intimacy of a concert to meet the ancient traditions of storytelling and textures of contemporary theatre in a troubling\, tender and powerful performance. \nRowan’s debut solo album\, The Lines We Draw Together\, is a companion to the live show and was released in August 2019\, fast garnering critical acclaim from the folk and world music press. Songlines gave it the much coveted ‘Top of the World’ award while Folk Radio UK hailed it as “the pinnacle of her musical journey to date”. It was Folk Album of the Month at The Guardian\, who called it “a handsome album\, muscular… strangely powerful”. \n“Classy anti-fascist art” ⭐⭐⭐⭐ — Edinburgh Festivals Magazine \n“Sublime… celebrates family\, nature and the ties that bind and goes on to pack a fierce political punch” ⭐⭐⭐⭐ — The Guardian \n“Utterly spellbinding… and as the red dress’ true origin unfolds\, the revelation will leave you quietly breathless” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — The Scotsman \n“vivid songwriting and composing… spectacularly beautiful” — Mark Radcliffe\, Radio 2
