SUMMARY:Baby Cinema – One Life
DESCRIPTION:ONE LIFE tells the true story of Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton\, a young London broker played by Johnny Flynn\, who\, along with Trevor Chadwick (played by Alex Sharp) and Doreen Warinner (played by Romola Garai) of the British Committee for Refugees in Czechoslovakia\, rescued 669 children from the Nazis in the months leading up to World War II\,. Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria\, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food\, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realised it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed? Fifty years later\, it’s 1988 and Nicky (played by Anthony Hopkins) lives haunted by the fate of the children he wasn’t able to bring to safety in England; always blaming himself for not doing more. It’s not until a live BBC television show\, ‘That’s Life!’\, surprises him by introducing him to some surviving children – now adults – that he finally begins to come to terms with the guilt and grief he had carried for five decades \n  \n\nBaby Cinema\nShowing films for the grown-ups\, our monthly midweek Baby Cinema is an opportunity for new parents and carers to get up and out in relative ease!  We will be serving coffee and cake from 9am in our café area\, and the film will start at 10am.  This is a relaxed screening\, so don’t worry if baby wakes up (there will be subtitles)! SUMMARY:Sancho&Me – For One Night Only
DESCRIPTION:Charles Ignatius Sancho was born on a slave ship on the Atlantic Ocean in 1729\, yet he became a writer\, composer\, shopkeeper and respected ‘man of letters’ in 18th century London becoming the first man of African Heritage to vote in Britain. \nThis is the extraordinary story of an unlikely hero\, brought to life by actor and author Paterson Joseph\, who performs an enthralling account of one man’s remarkable life. Part-biography and part-dramatized readings from Paterson’s acclaimed novel ‘The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho’\, Sancho&Me is an unmissable evening of storytelling with themes intersecting with Paterson’s own story of being Black and British.  This is a vital story connecting a Black Life in the transatlantic world from nearly three hundred years ago with a modern-day Black Life in today’s UK. Sancho’s music features during the piece and is arranged by the Musical Director Ben Park who joins Paterson on stage. \nSancho&Me – For One Night Only returns home and will have a special flavour tonight with an ensemble playing live on stage. It will be a true celebration of Ignatius Sancho’s life in music and word.  \n  \n\nPaterson Joseph’s novel ‘The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho’ won the RSL Christopher Bland Prize and The Historical Writer’s Association Debut Novel Prize in 2023. Paterson most recently starred in the film Wonka and the BBC hit series Boat Story. \nThe team also comprises Co-Director and Designer\, Michael Vale and Costumier Linda Haysman. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis project is developed with the help of Strawberry Hill Enterprises at St Mary’s University\, Twickenham. \n\nContent warning: Sancho & Me explores ideas of belonging\, language\, education\, slavery\, commerce\, violence\, threat\, politics\, music and love.

SUMMARY:These Boots Are Made For Walkin’
DESCRIPTION:Polly Vinyl & The Plastic Boot Band Presents:  These Boots Are Made For Walkin’ \nA celebration of two decades of trail-blazing female singers and songwriters \nThese Boot are Made for Walkin’– after Nancy Sinatra’s iconic song from 1966 – is a dynamic show celebrating the fabulous tunes from this era of musical empowerment. If you love powerful songs from the late sixties and seventies\, with big soulful female vocals and harmonies\, then this is an experience not to be missed! \n\nThe girl group phenomenon of the early 1960s was a product of a predominantly male music-business\, which fitted artists into traditional stereotypes… Doe-eyed young women singing about their hopeless devotion to their handsome\, straying men\, forgiving them in the name of love. Then things began to change; in 1964 a teenage girl appeared on American TV alongside predominantly male acts from the ‘rock n roll’ hall of fame: Chuck Berry\, James Brown\, Marvin Gaye\, The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones. She stepped up to the mic and began to sing her latest hit single\, “Maybe I Know.” The lyrics suggested that she knew her boyfriend had been unfaithful\, “But what can I do?” she crooned. Then\, suddenly Gore began to sing another song… “You don’t own me\, I’m not just one of your many toys.” She seemingly gave a satisfied smile as she belt-out\, “Don’t tell me what to do… Don’t tell me what to say”. Her name was Lesley Gore. \nAnd so began the first wave of bold young women\, who knew that music belonged to them. The door opened for others to find their voices in a time of social change. A man still loved a woman\, and a woman still loved a man\, but sisters were doing it for themselves. Women began to sing about making the same choices\, mistakes\, and regrets as their male counterparts. It led to a decade\, and more\, of gutsy women with soulful voices\, challenging pre-conceived ideas\, and rocking the charts with heart and soul.

SUMMARY:The Luminous
DESCRIPTION:Part Victorian thriller\, part contemporary tale of friendship and rebellion\, this time-travelling\, genre-busting new show combines RedCape Theatre’s unique blend of physical theatre\, dark comedy and gripping storytelling. \nAs protestors gather outside the hospital where they work\, three women meet up for a monthly book club. This month’s book is ‘Luminous’ – a dark delve into Victorian London\, where lurid stories are brought to life for entertainment in the penny gaff theatres: tales of an anonymous killer haunting the city and women whose bones glow through their skin. \nIn the twenty-first century living room\, the wine is flowing and the discussion is getting heated. Mighty thinks the book is outrageous\, Mags thinks it’s the best thing she’s ever read\, and Alice hasn’t got past page three. As the women get drawn deeper into the story\, memories surface\, unexpected connections are made\, and the worlds begin to blur.  Age Guidance: 14+ years \nContent warning: \nAge Guidance: 14+ years.  This production explores sensitive themes of violence against women (physical and sexual)\, abortion\, illness and grief\, and includes scenes that some audience members may find upsetting. It contains references to childbirth\, self-immolation and nuclear warfare. It also contains strong language\, ableist and misogynistic language and an abstract depiction of an autopsy. \n

So\, come and join “Louise” as she lifts the lid on social workers\, first aid training and what not to do when a vicar searches for you on YouTube. \nJoin the co-creator and co-host of cult hit podcast All Killa No Filla for a joyous and uplifting show from a comedian known for making “powerhouse stand-up from the thorniest of subjects” (The Guardian). \n“expect sequins\, social commentary\, and massive laughs from the renaissance woman of UK comedy”Rolling Stone \n  \nAge guidance: 15+ some strong language\nDuration: 95 minutes plus a 20 minute interval\nPhoto Credit: Drew Forsyth

DESCRIPTION:A unique celebration of the music of Prince. Drawing on his incredible catalogue of songs this show pays homage to perhaps the most influential artist of his generation. \nFeaturing David McAlmont and Imaani \nWith Musical Direction from Artist in Residence\, Janette Mason\, whose unique interpretations of Prince\, Bowie and many more have been receiving rave reviews. For example… \n“The flame-haired Janette Mason\, musical director\, took ownership of the set. In addition to being a rousing keyboardist\, Mason boasts formidable skill as a composer\, producer\, and arranger– toying with the arrangements and sometimes entirely reinventing them. She has the uncanny knack of undoing a song by its seams and reconceptualising it with brazen originality. \nIndeed\, Mason was not afraid to take fan-favourites and render them almost unrecognisable. The song I was least looking forward to\, the karaoke staple ‘Kiss’\, was a standout performance thanks to Mason’s slowed-down jazz arrangement\, transporting the audience to the 1950s. Moreover\, ‘Little Red Corvette’ became a country mid-tempo and ‘Raspberry Beret’ a celebratory reggae joint – renamed ‘Guyana Beret’. ‘When Doves Cry’ was also given the bassline unusually absent from the original recording. SUMMARY:The Great Belzoni – The Case Of The Disappearance Of The Oggetto D’Arte From The British Museum
DESCRIPTION:After last year’s SELL OUT run – we welcome back The Great Belzoni who has a new dastardly crime to solve… \nFrom the pen of local writer Loz Keal\, who also wrote last Christmas’ brilliant Robin Hood\, the Pantomime\, we are proud to present this hilarious spoof whodunit set in London in 1928 at the height of ‘Egyptian Mummy Fever.’ \nThe morning the British Museum is due to unveil some new exhibits\, The Great Belzoni notices the Book of the Dead has been stolen. \nOnly a privileged few have had access; who could have done it…? Trusted museum curator Gussy… or perhaps the Lady Deep-Pockets\, or the socialite Michelle Willmer-Teresa-Forbes Tweedie… surely not ‘honest-as-the-day-is-long’ Sidney Salt…? \nThere’s only one way to find out… join us and watch as The Great Belzoni reveals all! \n \nSeating will be unallocated\, cabaret style.

SUMMARY:Hejira – Celebrating Joni Mitchell
DESCRIPTION:‘Hejira’ is a 7-piece band set up to celebrate and honour the masterpiece works of Joni Mitchell\, mostly from the late ‘70s. Having released the albums ‘The Hissing of Summer Lawns’\, ‘Hejira’\, ‘Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter’ and ‘Mingus’ (regarded as her ‘jazz period’)\, Joni then toured briefly with a band formed from the crème de la crème of contemporaneous jazz musicians (Metheny\, Mays\, Brecker\, Pastorius and Alias). The tour was recorded\, producing the outstanding live album\, ‘Shadows And Light’; it is from this album that the band Hejira is drawing the body of its repertoire. Comprising highly experienced jazz musicians\, this band is fronted by the brilliant Hattie Whitehead who not only has – in her own way – assimilated the poise\, power and beauty of Joni’s vocals\, but also plays guitar with Joni’s stylistic mannerisms. Expect an evening of the ‘great’ songs from Mitchell’s back catalogue\, such as ‘Amelia’\, ‘Woodstock’\, ‘A Case Of You’\, ’Song For Sharon’\, ‘Edith And The Kingpin’ etc! \nThe band comprises of: \nHattie Whitehead ~ vocals & guitar \nOllie Weston ~ tenor & soprano saxophones \nChris Eldred ~ keyboards \nPete Oxley ~ guitar \nDave Jones ~ bass \nRick Finlay ~ drums \nMarc Cecil ~ percussion \nSince their formation less than a year ago\, the band has been a tremendous success\, with sold out shows\, standing ovations\, a total of over 70K views on their YouTube channel with more than 1\,200 enthusiastic comments and audience reviews. \n\nThursday 13th June at 7.30pm\nRunning time: 50 minutes each half with a 20-minute interval\nTicket Prices: £25 (Gen) & £22.50 (Concs)\n\n\nAudience comments: \n“Almost brought to tears so incredible!”\n“Shadows and Light is far and away the crowning glory of Joni’s discography. And this is a glowing\,\nwonderful tribute. Bravi!”\n“What a superb rendition of Coyote. Easily the best version (next to JMs) in yt. Thanks.”\n“As a lifelong worshipper of the greatest songwriter that has ever lived\, Joni Mitchell\, I can honestly\nsay this is the best rendition next to the Goddess herself\, I have ever heard… excellent\, excellent\,\nexcellent!”\n“Just watched them tonight…at Gothforth…totally astonishing performance from the band…to sit\nback and hear those beautiful layers of sound wash over…wonderful vocal performance…”\n“I had the pleasure of seeing the band live at Peggy’s Skylight – they were absolutely stunning. It\ntakes special musicians to fill the shoes of Pastorious\, Metheney et al but these guys are top drawer\nand make it all sound effortless.”\n“This is how you celebrate another artist’s creation. Reverent\, beautiful\, masterful and respectful.”\n“Good lord that was stunning! To do justice to Joni Mitchell’s incredibly personal and poignant Hejira\ntakes artistry\, taste and serious chops. What a fabulous band\, what a fabulous singer!”\n“This band is phenomenal. Standing ovations abound at their recent Colchester concert. Definitely a\nmust see performance and excellent musicianship!” \n
