SUMMARY:BEAUTY IN EVERY SMILE
DESCRIPTION:Smile Train UK – the world’s largest cleft charity – have released a series of unfiltered images celebrating the beauty and diversity in smiles\, to support their new nationwide campaign\, Beauty in Every Smile. \n\n\n\nCaptured by London-based photographer Fanny Beckman\, who is renowned for using art to raise awareness of social injustice and inequalities\, the images feature 12 cleft-affected people from across the UK\, who have come to love their smiles after facing stigma\, mistreatment and/or discrimination as a result of their facial difference. \n\n\n\nLaunched in time for World Smile Day® (6 October)\, the images are being showcased on giant 2-metre high panels in a public exhibition on London’s busy South Bank\, from 9am on Thursday 5 October to 4pm on Saturday 7 October. \n\n\n\nCommenting on the exhibition images\, Fanny Beckman\, says: “Beauty in Every Smile has truly been a dream project to work on. Smile Train UK’s work is very much in line with my ethos and what I want to achieve with my photography: to raise awareness of stories that historically have been untold. Art is a powerful tool to use to start conversations\, and I’ve been fortunate to meet many inspiring people during the photoshoots. I am grateful to all the models for sharing their experiences\, and for removing the stigma around being born with a cleft.”  \n\n\n\nA cleft is a facial difference that occurs when a baby’s lip and/or mouth do not fuse together during pregnancy. One in 700 people are born with a cleft in the UK each year – and every three minutes a baby is born with a cleft globally. \n\n\n\nSadly\, research recently carried out by Smile Train UK – in partnership with Censuswide – found that over a third (34%) of people living with a facial difference in the UK (including cleft) have been discriminated against or have heard negative comments said about them. Three in ten (30%) have also been bullied. As a result\, more than a quarter have felt self-conscious (29%)\, unhappy (28%)\, embarrassed (28%)\, unwanted (26%) – and even depressed (27%). \n\n\n\nAnd these feelings of self-consciousness don’t just impact people with a facial difference. According to Smile Train UK’s survey\, over half (53%) of the wider public are yet to fully love their smile. And sadly\, only 18% of the nation think their smile is beautiful. \n\n\n\nInterestingly\, approximately a quarter (24%) of the public surveyed said they would love their smile more if they were told it was beautiful. And for one in ten\, a greater understanding of differences and uniqueness in society would have a positive impact on the way they view their smile too. \n\n\n\nIn response to these findings\, Smile Train has launched the Beauty in Every Smile campaign\, to inspire more ‘smile inclusivity’ in the UK and to encourage people to see the beauty in their own unique smiles. \n\n\n\nSmile Train UK is championing smile inclusivity\, by encouraging more people to see the beauty in the smiles of others – as well as their own. Because there’s Beauty in Every Smile. Visit www.smiletrain.org.uk/beautyineverysmile to learn more.

SUMMARY:SMILE TRAIN LAUNCHES TEA-RRIFIC EASTER FUNDRAISER
DESCRIPTION:International children’s cleft charity\, Smile Train is excited to announce that one of their flagship fundraising events\, the Big Smile Tea Party\, will be launching once again this April. \nTaking place between Monday 11 – Sunday 24 April\, the Big Smile Tea Party is dedicated to bringing people together over a cuppa and a cake to raise money for cleft-affected children around the world. \nWhether you choose to ‘par-tea’ at home\, schedule a tea break with colleagues over Zoom\, or FaceTime relatives from afar for an afternoon tea\, Smile Train UK is encouraging everybody in April to boil the kettle\, enjoy a slice of their favourite cake\, and have a ‘good old natter’ with the people they love whilst donating their spare change to Smile Train. \nA cleft is the most common facial difference globally\, affecting around 1 in 700 babies each year. In the UK\, cleft surgery is carried out within the first 12 months of a baby’s life by the National Health Service (NHS). However\, hundreds of thousands of children living in resource-poor communities worldwide do not have access to the lifesaving cleft treatment they so desperately need. \nSmile Train uses a unique and sustainable model of empowering local medical professionals with the tools they need to provide free surgeries and a full programme of comprehensive cleft care. Over the last 20 years\, the charity has supported safe and quality cleft care for 1.5+ million children and will continue to do so until every cleft-affected individual has access to the care they deserve. \nFor this year’s fundraiser\, the Big Smile Tea Party will be raising awareness for Smile Train’s nutritional programmes which provide vital support to babies and their families. Babies with clefts are uniquely vulnerable to malnutrition\, even when food supply is abundant. In 2021\, Smile Train announced its five-year commitment to scaling investment in global nutrition to support mothers and babies deeply affected by clefts. \nComplimentary fundraising kits are available to order at smiletrain.org.uk/bigsmileteaparty. The kits contain all the essentials you need for a successful tea party\, including Smile Train posters\, balloons\, stickers\, and a collection box. \nThe Big Smile Tea Party campaign will be running from Monday 11 April to Sunday 24 April\, but you can hold one at any time. Order your fundraising pack at smiletrain.org.uk/bigsmileteaparty today!

SUMMARY:Artist Launches London Exhibition In Support Of Children’s Cleft Charity
DESCRIPTION:Katie Manning\, artist\, and mother of three from Oxford\, is launching an art exhibition in March to raise awareness of cleft and Smile Train UK\, the international children’s cleft charity.\nThe exhibition titled ‘Portraits’ will run from 3rd – 13th March at The Brick Lane Gallery in Bethnal Green\, London. Katie’s hand-drawn collection will display 30 portraits of children born worldwide with a cleft. Some of the children shown in the exhibition have directly benefited from Smile Train’s free cleft surgery and comprehensive cleft care services\, allowing them to live whole and healthy lives. \nThe exhibition will be Katie’s first since she was a student at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College\, where she studied Textile Art and Surface Decoration. The artist was inspired to embark on the artistic adventure following her family’s own experiences of clefts – her eldest daughter was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate\, and her husband was born with a unilateral cleft. \nA cleft is the most common facial difference globally\, affecting around 1 in 700 babies each year. However\, while supporting her daughter through cleft surgery and subsequent orthodontic work and speech therapy\, Katie noticed that there is still a lot of stigma and misunderstanding associated with a cleft. This often stems from a lack of awareness and knowledge of what a cleft is and how differently it can impact individuals and their families for entire lifetimes. \nIn a bid to tackle this issue\, last year\, Katie committed to hand-drawing 100 portraits of babies\, children and adults born with a cleft. Katie is now launching a ‘preview’ of some of her art\, hoping that it will help raise awareness and increase knowledge creatively and powerfully. \nKatie has also joined Smile Train UK’s Cleft Community Advisory Council\, using lived experience to advise on campaigns and activities and becoming a Smile Train UK ambassador to raise awareness for the charity. Katie is passionate about Smile Train’s work and has set up a dedicated Just Giving page in support of the charity. \nIn the UK\, cleft surgery is carried out within the first 12 months of a baby’s life by the National Health Service (NHS). However\, hundreds of thousands of children living in resource-poor communities worldwide are not as fortunate and do not have access to the lifesaving cleft treatment they desperately need. \nSmile Train uses a unique and sustainable model of empowering local medical professionals and hospitals with the tools they need to complete free surgeries and an entire programme of aftercare. Over the last 21 years\, the charity has supported safe and quality cleft care for 1.5+ million children and will continue to do so until every person in need of a cleft has access to the care they deserve. \nA selection of Katie’s collection will be on sale at The Brick Lane Gallery for a limited time. Entry to the exhibition is free\, and the portraits will be sold at the starting value of £125.00.

SUMMARY:Yoga for Smiles
DESCRIPTION:International children’s cleft charity\, Smile Train\, is excited to announce that their annual fundraiser\, Yoga for Smiles\, will return for 2021 – helping to bring some much needed ‘zen’ to our lives after a challenging year for many of us. \nYoga for Smiles encourages friends\, families\, colleagues\, and students across the UK to practice yoga whilst raising vital funds for Smile Train – so they can continue to support free cleft surgery and comprehensive cleft care to children globally. \nTo help lift spirits and keep the nation smiling\, Smile Train is encouraging people to ‘Give 5\, Take 5’ on International Day of Yoga (21 June) – by taking a five-minute break out of the day to stretch\, breathe deeply\, and smile\, then donate £5 to Smile Train. \nYoga focuses on the body\, breath\, and movement and can be a brilliant tool to manage and reduce stress – an emotion that has been heightened for many of us throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. So whether you choose to carry out your 5 minutes of yoga at home\, in the gym or at your local park\, you don’t need to bend over backwards to get involved. Five beginner poses to try include: \n1. Child’s pose: This is a very calming pose that gently stretches your lower back\, hips and thighs.\n2. Downward-facing dog: This pose helps to strengthen the arms\, shoulders and back.\n3. Tree pose: This can be carried out to improve balance and strengthen the core.\n4. Cat pose: A simple pose to help stretch the spine\, back muscles and neck. You can couple this with ‘Cow pose’\, which stretches the front of the torso and throat area to create a calming warm up.\n5. Bridge pose: Acting as an accessible backbend for most people\, this pose is a great way to strengthen the back\, glutes\, hamstrings\, and legs. \nMany children worldwide with cleft do not have access to proper treatment\, which can permanently impact their ability to eat\, breathe\, speak\, and ultimately thrive. To address this issue\, Smile Train empowers local medical professionals in 70+ countries with the training\, funding\, and resources they need to provide free cleft surgery and other forms of essential care to children in their own communities. \nAny funds raised through the Yoga for Smiles initiative will allow Smile Train to continue its’ life-changing work\, giving more children the opportunity to live healthy and productive lives. So\, get stretching and help to change the world one smile at a time! \nThose taking part in the fundraiser are encouraged to share their pose on social media\, tagging five friends to do the same and including the hashtag #YogaForSmiles.

SUMMARY:Smile Train Invites Friends and Families to Host a Big Smile Tea Party
DESCRIPTION:The international children’s cleft charity Smile Train is excited to announce that their annual fundraising event\, the Big Smile Tea Party\, will return for 2021 – just in time for the Easter festivities. \nLaunching from Thursday 1 April – Friday 16 April\, the Big Smile Tea Party encourages friends\, families\, colleagues\, and students all over the UK to come together and host an internationally themed tea party whilst raising vital funds for children with clefts in need of treatment. \nWhether you choose to ‘par-tea’ at home\, schedule a tea break with colleagues over Zoom\, or FaceTime relatives from afar for an afternoon tea\, Smile Train is encouraging everybody to boil the kettle\, enjoy a slice of their favourite cake\, and have a ‘good old natter’ with the people they love whilst donating some spare change to Smile Train if they can. \nMany children around the world with clefts do not have access to proper treatment\, which can permanently impact their ability to eat\, breathe\, speak\, and ultimately thrive. To tackle this issue\, Smile Train empowers local medical professionals in 70+ countries with the training\, funding\, and resources they need to provide free cleft surgery and other forms of essential care to children in their own communities. \n \n  \n  \nAll funds raised through the Big Smile Tea Party will allow the charity to continue this lifesaving work and give more children the opportunity to live healthy and productive lives. \nThere is no time like the present to show off your lockdown baking skills\, so tie up your aprons\, dig out your best recipe books\, and whip up some treats using your favourite international ingredients to help change the world one smile at a time. \nComplimentary fundraising kits are available to order at smiletrain.org.uk/bigsmileteaparty for anyone who is eager to take part. The kits contain all the essentials you need for a successful tea party\, including Smile Train posters\, balloons\, stickers\, and a collection box. \nIan Vallance\, Director of Smile Train UK\, says: “The Big Smile Tea Party is a perfect opportunity for people to spend some quality time with their loved ones over Easter\, whether that’s in person or virtually\, whilst raising money for children in need around the world. \nTo date\, Smile Train has transformed the lives of more than 1.5 million children with the power of a brand-new forever smile. The funds we receive from the Big Smile Tea Party will enable us to continue our vital work and create even more smiles in the years to come.” \nThe Big Smile Tea Party campaign will be running from Thursday 1 April to Friday 16 April\, but you can hold one at any time.
