SUMMARY:Hamed Sinno: Poems of Consumption
DESCRIPTION:The iconic Lebanese-American indie-rock musician Hamed Sinno debuts their solo material for this year’s Shubbak Festival. \nAfter leading up the most prominent indie-rock band of the Arab world Mashrou’ Leila\, the prodigious composer returns to the stage with a new project co-commissioned by Shubbak Festival and the Barbican. \nPoems of Consumption is a literary song cycle that explores the resonances between Amazon-era consumerism\, mental illness\, unrequited love\, and environmental collapse\, without purporting to have an alternative or moral high-ground. It’s a portrait of Nero\, a desolate working-class melancholic crying at Whole Foods while the world outside comes to a boil. The compositions juxtapose the romanticism evoked by the sound of a string section\, with hyper-industrial electronica created out of the sounds of consumerism (crumpling cellophane\, bubble wrap\, unboxing\, ripping plastic) to swing between dancefloor & aural assault. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCo-commissioned by Shubbak Festival and the Barbican. DESCRIPTION:An electric solo dance performance exploring the trauma of war through movement and sound. \nCan you still hear the bombs? I can hear them. \nGrowing up in a war zone means living and breathing politics. The Palestinian choreographer and performer Samaa Wakim asks herself how these experiences impact her identity and how generational trauma manifests in her body. In a journey towards the moment she began to fear for her freedom\, Losing It dives into memories of growing up under occupation\, exploring the various lived realities\, and the fantasies created out of fear and hope in order to survive. As fear overtakes Samaa\, her world begins to disintegrate: the floor becomes unstable\, and the sounds begin to warp\, creating a world where reality and fantasy blur. \nCreated in conversation with a live score by Samar Haddad King\, the soundscape features field recordings taken throughout Palestine since 2010. Accompanied by Wakim’s vocals\, the sounds of fear and safety come together to the point where past and present cloud the future. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGenerously supported by A. M. DESCRIPTION:/‘jes.mɪən/ /’aʊdiʃəʊ/ /’ʁrɑː.wiː/  lived and cautiously thrived in a dictatorship for almost two decades. ‘From The Daughter Of A Dictator’ is a one-person show exploring the personal journey of migration from Baghdad to Beirut to Berlin to Britain.  \n\n\n\nThere still lives the belief\, a false one perhaps\,  that the UK\, Europe\, “the West”  are the final bastions of human rights. But what if these illusory safe shores of democracy are in danger of disappearing.  What if living in a democracy is becoming no different than living in a dictatorship. Where do we go then? \n\n\n\nMore importantly\, where will you go? \n\n\n\n‘From The Daughter Of A Dictator’ is a collage of fragmented images and anecdotes about displacement\, hope\, sorrow\, joy\, and resistance converging  into the body and voice of one person trying to orient in a violently loud\, crushing world. Stories are spoken\, whispered\, sung and woven together with the conviction of a ‘rawiya’.  The body takes its chances to hold\, preserve\, resist and crack under the weight and pressure of extremes. \n\n\n\nThis is a performance about the dreamers who left\, and those who remain. SUMMARY:Dreamer
DESCRIPTION:Dreamer is a semi-autobiographical performance of an urgent witness about three Black women in Arab society.  \n\n\n\nSalama\, Eman and Juliette. Each is a model of possibility\, representing the choices and challenges faced by Black women in the Arab World. They are confronted with the weight of invisibility. They assert themselves. They love\, hurt\, and heal. \n\n\n\nThrough their interconnected lives\, Dreamer reveals what racism\, misogyny and xenophobia look like alongside culture\, faith and joy. It interrogates regional gender and sexual politics\, the friction between modernity and tradition\, and the generational conflicts which shape how black women relate to each other and themselves. \n\n\n\nDreamer reflects a varied\, textured Black experience that has long been silenced and hidden away. \n\n\n\nLead Creative and Performer: Colette Dalal Tchantcho \n\n\n\nDirected by: Lama Amine \n\n\n\nDreamer was created with a team of eight dedicated artists. For some of these artists\, being named publicly as a collaborator in work tackling themes such as colourism\, queerness\, and the politics of Arab Society could impact their future work\, visa status and physical safety. Listing only those who are safe to be named perpetuates the imbalance of visibility that can happen when white Western collaborators are invited to work in an Afro-Arab space. Therefore\, the creative team has collectively chosen not to be listed in print. Colette deeply appreciates them\, their work\, and their dedication. Please keep in mind that work such as this is supported by significant amounts of invisible labour\, both practical and emotional\, and that work does not end once the production is staged.

DESCRIPTION:Shubbak Festival and BAC present the preview of Pathogen of War: An immersive experience exploring a mysterious killer born of war. In 2023\, this pathogen kills between 50\,000-100\,000 people a year.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll take you forward to 2073\, a decade after the Bio-Rift – the moment when all bacteria became resistant to all our antibiotics\, resulting in the deaths of around half the human population. \n\n\n\nThis speculative interactive work combines real science with a possible near future looking at the dangers of antibiotic resistance. As participants\, you’ll become members of the Recovery Administration\, being trained in what caused the Bio-Rift and tasked with ensuring it never happens again. \n\n\n\nIraqi medical anthropologist Dr Omar Dewachi will take you on a journey to understand how Acinetobacter baumannii went from being a relatively benign bacteria to a “perfect killer”\, also known by its US moniker ‘Iraqibacter’ or the ‘invisible enemy’. \n\n\n\nTogether you’ll reveal the many layers of this bacteria’s social history – from the microscopic to the geopolitical\, unearthing how the consequences of war can drive pathogens\, which threaten the viability of antibiotics\, and our health\, globally. \n\n\n\nThis is a preview run of the show in London. \n\n\n\nDirector: Yasmin FeddaExecutive Producer: May Abdalla – AnagramProducer: Dan Davies-Black Leaf Films \n\n\n\nDeveloped with CPH: Lab and at the National Theatre Immersive Storytelling Studio residency.Generously supported by Arts Council England.Supported by Queen Mary University of London.

This is what the dog said to the harvest. \n\n\n\nTracing 400 years across multiple narratives\, we confront the era of human displacement. \n\n\n\nCombining the immediacy of live performance and the intimacy of installation\, what the dog said to the harvest is an invitation to solidarity\, highlighting the ripple effect of Western-centric behaviours on silenced communities and drawing on stories from across the UK\, Lebanon and Syria. \n\n\n\nLisa Minerva Luxx weaves poetry\, fiction and memoir alongside critiques of Europe’s foundational philosophies. The inclusion of verbatim illustrates how the climate crisis has long since arrived for Middle Eastern communities and the Global South and leaves us asking how we can build towards a more progressive future across borders. \n\n\n\nJasmin kent rodgman’s installation and score blend sound art\, contemporary x electronic music featuring field recordings\, vocals\, electric guitar\, synths and percussion\, experienced via live performance and 360° surround sound. \n\n\n\nThe work is an immersive promenade experience. Audience members will be free to move around the space as the work unfolds amongst and around them. \n\n\n\nPost-show Q&A with creators on Sunday\, 25 June\, after the 7 pm show.
