SUMMARY:An Accidental History of Tudor England – Chelsea History Festival
DESCRIPTION:How did ordinary people live in Tudor England? This unique analysis unearths the ways they died to find out. Far from the intrigues of Hampton Court Palace\, Shakespeare’s plots and the Spanish Armada\, explore the history of everyday life\, and everyday death. \nThis was a world where farming\, building and travel were dangerous. Fruit trees killed more people than guns\, and sheep killed about the same number of people as coalmines. Men stabbed themselves playing football and women drowned in the hundreds while fetching water. \nFrom bear attacks in north Oxford to a bowls-on-ice incident on the Thames\, Steven Gunn and Tomasz Gromelski use a remarkable trove of sources and stories to put common folk at the heart of Tudor England\, bringing the reality of their world to life as never before.

SUMMARY:Talk: The Dream Factory - Chelsea History Festival
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed author Daniel Swift tells the remarkable story of Shakespeare’s first theatre – the playhouse that came before the Globe. \nAbout the event\nIn 1576\, in a muddy field in Shoreditch\, James Burbage erected London’s first purpose-built commercial playhouse. A place of high culture and quick profit\, run by cunning dreamers\, the theatre for the first time offered London’s players the chance to control what they staged. \nAt a time when playgoing was held to be close to a sin\, this entertainment factory was a flashpoint for controversy\, but it would also become Shakespeare’s first theatre\, where he learned to ply his trade before his company moved to the Globe. \nThrough the life of this little-known playhouse\, Daniel Swift tells the story of how Shakespeare became Shakespeare\, and the Elizabethan stage began to flourish.

SUMMARY:Talk: The Battle of Chillianwala - Chelsea History Festival
DESCRIPTION:Ian McLeod tells the story of one of the fiercest battles of the Second Sikh War\, assessing its significance and revealing a unique link with the Royal Hospital Chelsea. \nAbout the event\nIn January 1849\, in the Punjab (in modern-day Pakistan)\, forces of the British East India Company clashed with the army of the Sikh Empire in a fierce and bloody battle. The British public were shocked by the severe casualties inflicted on British soldiers\, particularly those of the 24th Regiment of Foot\, which lost half of its strength in dead and wounded. Both sides claimed victory\, but British prestige was damaged. \nAt the time\, the battle fired Victorian imaginations. One distinguished poet immortalised it in verse and\, when two British generals were remarking on the disaster of the ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’ in Crimea in 1854\, one remarked: ‘These sorts of things will happen in war. It is nothing to Chillianwala.’

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Lost & Found in Hong Kong - Chelsea History Festival
DESCRIPTION:In 2015\, a group of history enthusiasts stumbled upon a diary in a soon-to-be-demolished building in Hong Kong. The diary belonged to Lam Ping-yu\, one of 24 naval officers sent to Britain for training during the Second World War. As their first mission in Europe\, many took part in the D-Day Landings\, as well as the Allied liberation of southern France. \nAt the time of its discovery\, Lam’s diary was the only known primary source on Chinese participation during D-Day. It reveals numerous first-hand stories about the realities of war\, featuring countless depictions of excitement\, frustration\, envy and even romance. \nIn 1945\, Lam also took part in Operation Armour\, devised by the British government to alleviate the dire situation in Japanese-occupied Hong Kong. His writings provide us with a glimpse into the city’s post-war recovery. \nAs we mark 80 years since the end of the Second World War\, come and visit the Soane Stable Yard to discover this fascinating area of military history\, told through stories\, objects and multimedia displays. \nThe exhibition is curated by Angus Hui and John Mak. Angus is an award-winning journalist-turned-historian. He holds an MPhil from the University of Cambridge and specialises in modern Chinese history and Hong Kong culture and heritage. John is a public policy professional\, who is an inaugural Obama Scholar\, Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia honouree\, and an Asia 21 Next Generation Fellow of Asia Society.
