SUMMARY:Faraj Suleiman | Kings Place
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with MARSM\, we are delighted to welcome back Palestinian composer and pianist Faraj Suleiman to the EFG London Jazz Festival in 2019.\n____________________________ \nAfter selling out at the EFG London Jazz Festival in 2018\, renowned Palestinian composer and pianist Faraj Suleiman returns to the capital to play an exclusive quintet show. \nBorn in a village in the upper Galilee\, Suleiman has been playing the piano since the tender age of three. Influenced by his passion for Arabic music and eastern rhythms\, it’s both Suleiman’s groundbreaking original compositions as well as his compelling renditions that have led him to become one of the leading composers of the Arab world. \nHis penchant for Arabic scales and modalities smoothly blends with his inspiration from tango and jazz traditions to create a uniquely captivating sound. In the past five years\, he has released five albums alongside numerous stunning works with poets\, theatres and musicals. Currently based in Paris\, he is gearing up to release his first non-instrumental album that features Suleiman’s own written compositions and lyrics. \nThis event has been made possible with support from Al Araby TV.\n_____________________________ \nThe EFG London Jazz Festival returns to Kings Place this November\, along with an illustrious line-up of international artists.

SUMMARY:I Have Two Names
DESCRIPTION:Salim has lived a happy existence in London for over 10 years. Suddenly\, his friends start to take an interest in his homeland Palestine and his seemingly easy life in the UK is altered. He is faced with a bittersweet feeling; the pleasure that those close to him want to discover his country mixed with the frustration that they can journey there with the ease of holidaymakers\, travelling a route that is totally off limits to him. \nThrough Al Zaytouna Dance Theatre’s artful mix of dabke\, contemporary dance and theatre performed to a ground shaking mix of modern electronic and traditional beats\, the play questions the nature of solidarity movements and explores the complex experience of exile\, identity and homesickness. \nThe performance will be followed by Q&A with Director and cast. \nWritten and directed by Ahmed Najar. \nSupported by Amal – a Saïd Foundation programme and Arts Council England.

SUMMARY:Adonis [UK Debut]
DESCRIPTION:Formed in 2011\, Adonis is a powerful 4-piece indie-pop/rock band who have been leaving an undeniable stamp on Lebanon’s independent music scene. The name of the band was inspired by the lead’s home town\, the village of Adonis\, which also inspired the band’s debut single\, “Stouh Adonis\,” (The Rooftops of Adonis). The album was released in 2012 referencing gatherings on rooftops in the village and is heavily dosed with nostalgia. \nFor their first European tour\, they will be performing songs from their earlier albums\, revisiting the cheeky and compelling themes and sounds of Arabic 80s and 90s pop music\, as well as more recent tunes from their two latest two albums\, “Nour” and “12 Hours”\, produced by Jean-Marie Riachi and Sleiman Damien\, who introduce electro-dance influences into the band’s sound\, and address the broader socio-political issues that shape the Middle-East today. \nThe band has so far released 4 albums exploring the diverse facets and daily stories of Arab urban life. \nThis concert has been made possible by the support of Al Araby TV.\n_____________________________________________________________ \nRich Mix is wheelchair accessible\n14+. Under 16s to be accompanied by an adult.

SUMMARY:Alsarah and the Nubatones / Juliana Yazbeck
DESCRIPTION:A full night celebrating East African retro grooves\, contemporary Arabic soul and electric rebellious poetry. \nALSARAH AND THE NUBATONES\nA spellbinding journey into Nubian musical heritage\, Alsarah & The Nubatones are a 5-piece collective led by the eponymous Sudanese singer\, songwriter and ethnomusicologist Alsarah. Her inspiring and innovative voice has become a trademark for the burgeoning scene of ‘East-African retro-pop’ as well as being involved in numerous initiatives such as the stellar ‘Nile Project’ and collaborating with French producer Débruit. \nMeanwhile\, The Nubatones craft an eclectic mix of north and east African tunes with Arabic influences. Inspired by the pentatonic scale they blend a selection of Nubian ‘songs of return’ from the 1970s until today with original material and traditional music of central Sudan; their set is a musical journey through diaspora and migration through an urban lens. \nJULIANA YAZBECK\nBorn to Lebanese parents\, Juliana draws on her mixed cultural upbringing to create her signature sound: an unlikely but mesmerising fusion of spoken word\, otherworldly electronics\, and haunting Levantine vocals. \nJuliana Yazbeck’s debut record SUNGOD is a political and spiritual cry; a journey of celebrating our pre-Westernised identities. Unapologetic and raw\, Juliana’s lyrics challenge the effects of colonisation on cultural identities and its impact on the current state of love\, relationships and gender inequality. It is a call to shed internalised shame: to remember\, reawaken\, and reclaim our inherent and divine beauty… both as women and as autonomous peoples. \nOpening and closing on the night is none other than DJ Saliah. \nThis event has been made possible with support from Al Araby TV. \n——————————————————–\n14+. SUMMARY:Marcel & Rami Khalifé
DESCRIPTION:Revered oud player Marcel Khalifé reinvents his much-loved music with his son Rami and French jazz drummer Aymeric Westrich. \nThis is Khalifé as you’ve never seen him – stripped back from the large ensemble he usually performs with. Played on just oud\, piano and drums\, we hear his songs in a new way\, as the heart of their melody and meaning are revealed anew. Inspired by contemporary poetry\, Khalifé’s songs promote traditional Arabic music\, bringing it into new contexts and continually finding a fresh relevance. \nAn exciting young composer\, having followed his father into music\, Rami Khalifé has performed internationally and been commissioned by a variety of ensembles. Sharing an experimental outlook\, he has collaborated with Aymeric Westrich on his brother\, Bachar Mar-Khalifé’s album Oil Slick\, mixing traditional Arabic sounds with jazz and electronics.

With more than a dozen events over a 3 week period\, this triple-bill is an all star line up showcasing some of North Africa’s most moving acts and the closing performance of STANCES مواقف festival. \nRaï | Gnawa | African | Electronics | Chaabi | Rock | Trance \nThis is a ticketed event. Tickets available through Rich Mix. \nSPEED CARAVAN\nFuelled by the creative fire Mehdi Haddab\, Speed Caravan is the Paris-based quartet charged towards a psychedelic horizon. Taking traditional Algerian influences and the unique appeal of Raï genre\, the band rips through unstoppable electronic beats\, grooves and raw rock energy. Haddab\, a virtuoso oud player\, has turned it’s classical role on its head\, instead turning the oud into unapologetic rock and roll instrument. With their first album\, Kalashnik Love\, Mehdi and his Speed Caravan have created a ‘contemporary music caravan’; as Songlines writes: “Haddab has fused history and technical brilliance with rage and energy\, and created something quite phenomenal.” \nGHOULA (A/V set)\nIn Tunisia\, music has been a generational vehicle for popular symbols\, images and myths. Despite its small size\, Ghoula sees his native country as a north African crossroad where legacies came to settle. As a producer and multi-instrumentalist posing his sounds on a backdrop of captivating images\, Ghoula creates genre-defying sets through both acoustics and samples. Obsessed with North African multimedia heritage\, Ghoula has been digging up vinyls from flea markets and old Tunisian medinas\, bringing back vestiges of forgotten music and kiKitsch visuals\, all cooked on top of contemporary upbeat dance rhythms. \nGNAWA LONDON\nLed by Moroccan Gnawa artist and award-winning ambassador for Gnawa music Simo Lagnawi\, the band pays its own unique tribute to North Africa’s most prolific musical tradition and sacred trance music. His solo debut album ‘Gnawa London’ released on Waulk records was featured in Songlines magazine as one of their ‘Top of the World Albums’ as he’s also been nominated in their ‘Best Newcomer’ and ‘Best Artist’ categories. Whether you’re a newcomer or veteran to the genre\, Gnawa London is a force to be reckoned with. \nThis event is 16+.\nRich Mix is wheelchair accessible. \nThis event has been made possible by the generous support of Al Araby TV and Arts Council England.

SUMMARY:DAM - Live in London
DESCRIPTION:Heralded as “the spokesman of a new generation”\, DAM began working together in the late 1990s as the first Palestinian hip-hop crew and among the first to rap in Arabic. Struck by the uncanny resemblance of the reality of the streets in a Tupac video to the streets in their own neighborhood of Lyd\, they were inspired to tell their stories through this new medium. \nBringing together a unique combination of Arabic percussion rhythms\, Middle Eastern melodies and hip hop\, DAM Palestine has grown to become one of the most influential acts of the Middle East’s urban music scene. \nIn 2016 Maisa Daw officially joined the group with the release of their first single ‘#Who_You_R’ an incendiary critique of gender roles and social hypocrisy. Captivating and cunning\, the group has been featured in Rolling Stone\, Vibe\, Q\, Reuters\, and The New York Times\, and has appeared on MTV\, CNN\, BBC\, and Al Jazeera. \nRecently signing with UK label Cooking Vinyl (Goldie\, Groove Armada\, Trio Joubran\, 47Soul) they are gearing to release their new album Between Hannah and Mannah and will be playing at the Jazz Cafe as part of their highly-anticipated England tour.

SUMMARY:Le Trio Joubran
DESCRIPTION:Oud masters and innovators Le Trio Joubran perform music from a career spanning fifteen years including their anticipated new album The Long March. \nFrom a family steeped in Arabic music\, the three brothers Samir\, Wissam and Adnan Joubran have been touring the world with their ouds for the past fifteen years. Through their mesmerizing songs they attempt to honour the struggles and oppression of indigenous peoples around the world\, and see their music as part of the Palestinian people’s effort for recognition. The three brothers form a trio\, a rare thing in oud music\, and it’s through the oud\, or Arabic lute which they have become one. \nTheir new record The Long March is a landmark for the band\, continuing to combine musical worlds with collaborations from Roger Waters and poet Mahmoud Darwish. Rock solos meet synths and Arabic verse; brooding and beautiful\, contemplative and joyous.
