SUMMARY:20 Years of Palestinian Hip Hop – In conversation with Tamer Nafar and Mahmood Jrere [MARSM Digital]
DESCRIPTION:MARSM UK and SOAS Concert Series present: 20 Years of Palestinian Hip Hop – In Conversation with Tamer Nafar and Mahmood Jrere. \n*This event is in conjunction with #MASRMDigital’s Music Film of the Month\, ‘Slingshot Hip Hop’ is streaming for free from April 05-19.* \nJoin us as we look back at the fascinating trajectory of hip hop in Palestine\, the beginnings of the alternative music scene\, and the changes that accompanied the music in the last two decades. We will be exploring the spaces of performance\, creative tools available for artists\, the role of social media\, and the evolution of the music scene through a lively discussion and insights from two of the most established Palestinian artists\, Tamer Nafar and Mahmood Jrere. \nWorking together since the late 1990s\, Tamer and Mahmood were two of the founding members of the iconic rap trio DAM\, the first Palestinian hip hop crew and among the first to shape rap in Arabic. Struck by the uncanny resemblance of the reality of the streets in a Tupac video to the streets in their own neighborhood in Lyd\, the trio were inspired to tell their stories through hip hop. In 2015\, the band was officially joined by Palestinian musician\, composer and artist Maysa Daw. \nMahmood Jrere \nAs well as his involvement in DAM\, Mahmood Jrere is also an independent artist\, music entrepreneur\, and the co-founder of the Palestine Music Expo. Mahmood released his debut album Rhythm of the Tribe in 2016\, and the past year saw him release four singles. \nTamer Nafar \nThe leader and founding member of DAM\, Tamer Nafar is also an independent artist\, actor\, screenwriter and social activist. He released a stream of DIY and collaborative productions in 2020\, including the tongue-in-cheek ‘Ba’do Fi Roh (Still Got Soul)’. \nBrief description of film: \n‘Slingshot Hip Hop’ is an award-winning documentary that portrays the Palestinian hip hop scene in the early 2000s\, and sheds light on the lives of its main protagonists. \nBraiding together the stories of young Palestinians living in Gaza\, the West Bank and Palestine 48\, the film spotlights the power of hip hop as a tool to surmount divisions imposed by occupation and social injustice. SUMMARY:The Man Behind the Microphone - Free Online Film Screening [MARSM Digital]
DESCRIPTION:An arresting story of love and family\, stardom and music. \nHedi Jouini\, known as the “Frank Sinatra of Tunisia” is the most popular musical star in the country’s history and a celebrated singer\, composer and oud player across the Arabic-speaking world. His long lasting career\, that began in the 1930s\, spanned almost five decades\, struck at the heart of the post-colonial social and political upheaval of Tunisia. To this day\, Jouini’s music inspires both revolutionaries and conservatives alike and has been an influential soundtrack to their ongoing search for identity in the wake of the Arab Revolutions. \nBut why did he keep his fame hidden from his family? What dark secrets did he keep from the nation that worshipped him? ‘The Man Behind the Microphone’ reveals the incredible story behind a man and his music\, and offers fascinating insight into Tunisia’s cultural evolution. The film builds a profound portrait of the godfather of Tunisian music – father to a nation\, but not always to his family.

SUMMARY:Sector Zero - Free Online Film Screening [MARSM Digital 2021]
DESCRIPTION:‘Sector Zero’ is a unique journey into the bittersweet history of Beirut’s derelict neighbourhood of Karantina. Lying to the East of Beirut’s port\, the area harbours a complex and fascinating story in both its buildings and ruins. The award-winning film analyses the persistence of this jarring urban void in modern-day Lebanon\, and how its dark history mirrors the country’s erratic progression in search of its national identity. \nThe controversial history of Karantina unfolds as a rich visual tapestry. Originally an Ottoman quarantine station for maritime travellers\, Karantina became a dense home for Palestinian\, Kurdish and South Lebanese refugees in the 50s and 60s; by the 1970s there were almost 30\,000 inhabitants. The area’s ruins\, separated by a kilometer-long wall\, would later house one of Beirut’s most spectacular and legendary night clubs: B018. Designed by architect Bernard Khoury\, the club discusses the role that culture and space play in the shaping of a communal memory (and at times\, amnesia). \nHarrowing images are interlaced with conversations exploring cultural identity\, political discord\, and Lebanon’s continuous regression. Through discussions with three leading Lebanese personalities\, Clinical Psychologist Dr. Chouki Azouri\, writer Hazem Saghiyeh\, and Architect Bernard Khoury\, ‘Sector Zero’ scrutinizes the neglected traumas of Lebanon’s past\, its unstable present\, and the difficulties it faces in building a satisfactory future.\nAccompanying the rich imagery of the film is the brilliant sound design and music\, composed and assembled by director and sound designer Nadim Mishlawi\, that sets this film’s acoustic background with intricate\, raw and industrial sounds.

SUMMARY:Umm Kulthum & The Golden Era
DESCRIPTION:Dubbed Egypt’s 4th Pyramid\, Umm Kulthum is the woman whose musical legacy sculpted Arab history and engraved women’s voices into the consciousness of the Arab world. This powerful musical covers her most mesmerising works spanning from the 1920’s up to the 1970’s\, culminating in her iconic performance at Paris’ L’Olympia. Making its highly anticipated worldwide debut\, this is the story of the female voice that outshone time. \nAt a time when women in the music world were few and far between\, Umm Kulthum carved her path in a man’s world. Her unparalleled and iconic career spanned five decades\, leaving a lasting legacy remembered until today. This unique musical introduces the life and soundtrack of Egypt’s leading musical sensation and the challenges she overcame to become the biggest star of the country’s ‘Golden Era’. \n\n\n \n  \nThe legendary singer (who passed away 45 years ago)\, will be resurrected on the West End’s renowned London Palladium. With English script and songs sung in Arabic\, including English subtitles\, her music will be reborn in London’s prestigious concert hall. \nHer most prominent works\, composed by Egypt’s musical giants\, including Riyad El Sunbati\, Sayed Mekawy and Baligh Hamdi\, will be performed by a full orchestra under the direction of Damascus born composer Louai Alhenaoui. Alhenaoui is the current director of the ‘London Syrian Ensemble’ and was previously the ney soloist at the Syrian National Symphony Orchestra and the National Arabic Orchestra\, as well as having toured and performed with Fayrouz.

SUMMARY:Shkoon / Rima Album Tour / London
DESCRIPTION:MARSM UK & The Jazz Cafe are proud to announce all-conquering electronic trio Shkoon’s biggest London show to date at The Jazz Cafe. \nLaunching their anticipated new album ‘Rima – ريما’\, the renowned Syrian/German electronic trio returns to London for a headline show. \nCombining Arabic scales and folklore with classical harmonic structures and electronica\, their new album further develops the band’s celebrated sound to include deep house\, downbeat\, dub and hip-hop. Powerful melodies and rhythms from Syria and the Middle East meet the pulse of North German electronica\, while piano\, violin\, synthesizers and percussion take the audiences into a trance-like state that is as captivating as it is danceable. \n‘Rima’\, the title song of the debut album is inspired by a story from Arabic folklore\, in which a mother tells peaceful tales to her child as the world sinks into chaos. \nEl Jehaz الجهاز join on support. Reshaping the boundaries between traditional Arabic music and electronica\, producer El Jehaz has become a key player in the digitalised rebirth of Mijwiz and electronic Dabke\, an unstoppable folkloric music phenomenon from Jordan and Palestine.

SUMMARY:Cairokee: ‘The Ugly Ducklings’ UK Album Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Marsm & El Wekala present: Cairokee \nAfter selling out two nights at the Jazz Cafe in 2018\, Cairo’s trailblazing rock pioneers return to London to premiere their anticipated 6th album\, ‘Ugly Ducklings’. \nArticulating the many elements of contemporary Egyptian society that drive their generation\, Cairokee’s anthemic calls for freedom and societal changes have become the soundtrack to a generation and an innate reflection of their unparalleled fan base. \nTheir latest and sixth album “Ugly Duckling” was launched in March 2019 and builds upon Cairokee’s “Parallel Universe” established in their song “No2ta Beida” (White Dot). All that cannot be discussed is put on display through the ugly – the ugly duckling. Musically\, the album builds on the band’s iconic indie\, pop and chaabi rock traditions while dancing its way through electronic influences and cutting vocals. \nSpecial support guest TBA.\n_____________________________________________________________\n14+ but all under 16s must be accompanied by an adult and may be asked to show\nphoto ID. \nFor wheelchair access please email admin@electricballroom.co.uk. SUMMARY:I Have Two Names
DESCRIPTION:Salim has lived a happy existence in London for over 10 years. Suddenly\, his friends start to take an interest in his homeland Palestine and his seemingly easy life in the UK is altered. He is faced with a bittersweet feeling; the pleasure that those close to him want to discover his country mixed with the frustration that they can journey there with the ease of holidaymakers\, travelling a route that is totally off limits to him. \nThrough Al Zaytouna Dance Theatre’s artful mix of dabke\, contemporary dance and theatre performed to a ground shaking mix of modern electronic and traditional beats\, the play questions the nature of solidarity movements and explores the complex experience of exile\, identity and homesickness. \nThe performance will be followed by Q&A with Director and cast. \nWritten and directed by Ahmed Najar. \nSupported by Amal – a Saïd Foundation programme and Arts Council England.

SUMMARY:Maurice Louca Elephantine Band | UK Première
DESCRIPTION:MARSM UK and Kings Place present Maurice Louca\, an Egyptian musician and composer born in Cairo\, is one of the most gifted\, prolific and adventurous figures on Egypt’s thriving experimental arts scene today. \nMaurice Louca has in recent years garnered a global reputation through two previous solo albums and an expanding\, evolving lineup of genre-defying collaborations. The Wire called his 2014 sophomore solo effort\, Salute the Parrot ‘remarkable music—dense\, driven and splashed with colour’. In 2017\, the self-titled debut by Lekhfa\, the trio of Louca and vocalists Maryam Saleh and Tamer Abu Ghazaleh\, was praised as an ‘edgy triumph’ in The Guardian. \nFor Louca\, Elephantine\, his 3rd and most ambitious album to date\, released on Northern Spy Records\, serves as both the pinnacle of his wide-ranging experience and a bold next step in his development as a composer\, arranger and bandleader. On this panoramic 38-minute odyssey performed by a dozen musicians\, he culls inspiration primarily from the brilliant players in his international artistic community—especially sometime collaborator Sam Shalabi’s Land of Kush. \nThat outsize\, otherworldly large ensemble\, Louca explains\, provided the catalyst for him to tackle ‘this idea of writing for bigger bands that I thought was reserved only for the Frank Zappas of the world.’ He was emboldened further by the extraordinary\, empathic musicianship of his group—a multinational assembly to match the all-embracing aesthetic at hand\, and boasting personnel from Egypt\, Italy\, Iraq\, Sweden\, Turkey and Denmark.\n______________________________ \nThe EFG London Jazz Festival returns to Kings Place this November\, along with an illustrious line-up of international artists.
