SUMMARY:Schoenberg: Reshaping Tradition
DESCRIPTION:London Sinfonietta open our 2024/25 season with a portrait of one of the most misunderstood pioneers of the early 20th-century avant-garde. Arnold Schoenberg’s early works such as his Chamber Symphony\, written in 1906\, expanded the lush harmonies of late Romanticism to the extent that it scandalised audiences and incited them to riot at the strange physicality of the sounds they were hearing. \nSchoenberg and his pupils\, among them Anton Webern\, pushed this experiment in chromaticism to its extreme conclusion\, eventually doing away with tonality in its entirety in the development of the twelve-tone system\, also known as serialism or dodecaphony. The school of composition had a profound effect on the rest of the 20th Century\, influencing composers who followed including Elisabeth Lutyens. \nThis most recent edition in London Sinfonietta’s series of season-opening composer portraits celebrates Schoenberg in his 150th anniversary year. DESCRIPTION:Looking to the future with three UK premieres\n\n\n\nLondon Sinfonietta travels to the future with three UK premieres and a favourite past commission. Sky Macklay’s Microvariations will lull you into a false sense of tonality before whisking you on a whistle-stop\, microtonal tour of 19th Century European orchestras\, “a fast-forward and transcontinental sonic truncation and fantasy on” the journey of British conductor George Thomas Smart and his tuning fork in 1825. In George Lewis’ lively Tales of the Traveller\, the eponymous hero travels the limits of imagination: the piece allows a soloist total free reign to improvise against a notated ensemble part. This groundbreaking new work will use multi-sensory immersion to challenge your perception of reality: poetry expressed in British Sign language and passionate dance create visual music\, whilst vibrations throughout the space create a haptic experience. This multi-sensory theatrical and musical evening oscillates from romantic songs to nightmarish visions\, intimate reverie and lucid horror. \n\n\n\nThe inter-dependent music\, English text and theatrical BSL were created symbiotically to engender many different sensory points of access to the piece whilst creating a unique art-music event. \n\n\n\n‘Looking to the light\, through the dark forests\, meeting here\, beyond the crossroads’ \n\n\n\nWriting the Future offers early career music creators unique opportunities to nurture their talents and to develop a new piece in partnership with a world-class producing ensemble\, and established mentors. DESCRIPTION:Minimalist master Steve Reich returns to his New York art scene roots in this bright and rhythmically agile piece\, written and performed alongside painter Gerhard Richter’s film Moving Picture. The film starts with a two-pixel pulsating\, colour-shifting line\, which becomes four pixels\, then sixteen\, then 32 and so on. The music starts with a two-note oscillation that expands equally but then becomes liberated from the structure of the forms on film\, allowing notes to escape and create their own destiny in this cool and elegant piece. SUMMARY:Sir Harrison Birtwistle: A Tribute
DESCRIPTION:“The purpose of life is to pass the message on”\,: so reads the inscription on an artwork by Bob Law\, which was the inspiration for The Message\, the duet which begins this concert in which London Sinfonietta pays tribute to one of its longest-standing collaborators\, Sir Harrison Birtwistle. This concert spans Birtwistle’s varied output\, ranging from the duet written for the Ensemble’s 40th birthday to the epic and theatrical Verses\, the first piece the composer wrote for the London Sinfonietta and requiring musicians to walk around the stage in strange and ritual processions.  In the second half\, performed side-by-side with musicians from the Royal Academy of Music\, The Fields of Sorrow was first composed for amateur musicians\, while In Broken Images\, co-commissioned by the London Sinfonietta\, celebrates the formation of the Italian state.  Tonight’s concert is a showcase of an enormous\, varied and mysterious ingenuity – and at its heart\, it is a celebration of our relationship with the late\, great composer.

Taking a lot of her inspiration from visual aspects of the natural world such as shifting clouds and falling snow\, Janulyte’s monochromatic compositions seem to play with temperature and density of sound.\n\nSleeping Patterns is woven from seven hypnotically repetitive patterns of slightly different tempos\, which intertwine throughout the ensemble. SUMMARY:Quartet for the End of Time
DESCRIPTION:Penderecki’s 70-year composing career exemplified the arc of Polish musical modernism\, and in 2012 The Guardian called him ‘arguably Poland’s greatest living composer’. He died in 2020\, leaving behind an influential body of large-scale works but also a wealth of striking and intellectual chamber music. We will be performing two of these chamber pieces\, Per Slava and Quartet\, for clarinet & string trio. These will be followed by Messiaen’s ‘Quartet for the End of Time’\, created when the composer was interned in a prisoner-of-war camp in eastern Germany during the Second World War.
