Šimon Šafránek\, Czech Republic / Slovakia\, 2020\, 80 min\, English subtitlesCast: Miro Žbirka \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n‘We wanted to make a film portrait … Without sentiment and pathos\, but with humour. SUMMARY:Owners- Film
DESCRIPTION:On Czech Centre London’s Vimeo (UK only):\n10am 7 November – 10am 10 November 2020\n£6.99; pre-order available now: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/owners \nA riveting and poignant comedy set in a residents’ association meeting\, where everyone must agree on building management. The homeowners’ characters\, ranging between idealists\, profiteers and manipulators\, are revealed to hilarious but chilling effect. UK Premiere. \nDir. Jiří Havelka\, Czech Republic / Slovakia\, 2019\, 96 min\, English subtitles\nCast: Tereza Ramba\, David Novotný\, Dagmar Havlová\, Klára Melíšková\, Jiří Lábus\, Kryštof Hádek \n‘I am the owner and I do not have to do anything.’\nMr Kubát (Jiří Lábus) \nTwelve homeowners\, each with a different agenda\, have to agree on the future of their building at a residents’ association meeting. Idealistic Mrs Zahradkova (Tereza Ramba) wants to save the crumbling old house and appeals to the newlyweds who have just moved in while bureaucratic Mrs Roubickova is insisting on rigidly following the rules of the meeting. As Mrs Prochazkova and her business partner are only interested in increasing the value of their property\, whilst grousy pensioner Mr Kubat is sabotaging all decisions and gossipmonger Horvathova (excellent and unrecognisable Dagmar Havlova) is stirring up trouble\, the meeting soon falls apart and slick businessmen\, the Cermak brothers\, step in to save the day. Authentic characters\, a perfect cast and an excellent script based on the director’s personal experience deliver a poignant and humorous portrayal of contemporary Czech society in this compelling comedy which gets you laughing at one moment and chills you the next but has you in its grip all the way through. \nWinner of the Best Screenplay and Best Actress for Tereza Ramba at the Czech Film Critics’ Awards. \nThe film will be available to rent (from UK only) for £6.99 from 10:00 on Sat 7 Nov GMT till 10:00 on Tue 10 Nov 2020 GMT on Czech Centre Vimeo on Demand via https://vimeo.com/ondemand/owners \nBONUS: Q&A WITH DIRECTOR JIŘÍ HAVELKA \nOrganised by the Czech Centre as part of Made in Prague ON/OFF Festival.

SUMMARY:Havel
DESCRIPTION:New biopic contrasting Václav Havel’s moral stand as a human rights activist with his flawed private life\, buiding up a captivating portrayal of the man who has become an icon.UK Premiere. \n\n\n\nDir. Slávek Horák\, Czech Republic 2020\, English subtitlesCast: Viktor Dvořák\, Anna Geislerová\, Martin Hofmann\, Barbora Seidlová \n\n\n\nHavel\, up close and personal: such is the new biopic by director Slávek Horák of the critically esteemed Home Care. Focusing on the period 1968 – 1989 and Havel´s personal life\, Horák explores Havel´s metamorphosis from internationally celebrated but persecuted playwright to banned and jailed human rights defender and finally to president of Czechoslovakia. But it is his relationship with his first wife Olga\, suffering from her husband’s infidelities\, that is at the centre of the story. Situations from his life such as the secret police witnessing his failed attempt to resolve a love tringle in a restaurant mirror his absurdist plays\, provide humour and emotion while Horák’s imaginative use of actual theatre settings to stage key moments from Havel’s confrontations with communist power document his public persona. An excellent cast including Viktor Dvořák capturing Havel’s moments of uncertainty and weakness\, and Anna Geislerová as direct and decisive Olga\, complement a portrayal depicting not an icon but a flawed man who steps out of his comfort zone to become politically engaged. Watch out for news footage from Havel’s life under the end credits including the Rolling Stones in Prague castle. \n\n\n\nNominated for The Czech Lions 2020 Best Actress\, Best Actor\, Best Screenplay and the Czech Film Critics Awards. \n\n\n\n“It is the personal life that helps the viewer to experience the story. Because few people can identify with being jailed or fighting against the Communists\, as Havel did. But everybody can identify with a marital crisis or relationship problems\, which Havel – like all of us – had with Olga.” Slávek Horák \n\n\n\nThe film will be available to rent (from UK only) for £6.99 from 10:00 on Sunday 1 November GMT till 10:00 on Wednesday 4 November 2020 GMT on Czech Centre Vimeo on Demand via https://vimeo.com/ondemand/havel \n\n\n\nBONUS: Q&A WITH DIRECTOR SLÁVEK HORÁK \n\n\n\nOrganised by the Czech Centre as part of Made in Prague ON/OFF Festival.

SUMMARY:Must-See Online Events at Lunchmeat Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Czech Centre London Cooperates with Lunchmeat Festival 2020\nThe Czech Centre London has teamed up with Prague’s Lunchmeat Festival\, an annual international festival dedicated to advanced electronic music and new media\, to present three must-see online events:\n– LUNCHMEAT x FACT: SAM ROLFES (360° AV experience) on 25 September\n– ETHNO SERVICE & ŠTĚPÁN MARKO (AV live) on 1 October\n– NIVVA (AV live) on 3 October \n25 September – Lunchmeat x Fact: Sam Rolfes 360° AV experience \nLunchmeat Festival and Fact Magazine join forces for an online event with acclaimed digital artist and director Sam Rolfes. The online performance is an audiovisual “tour de force” through his exceptional and extravagant mutant visual style\, which you’ll recognise from unmistakeable video and still image projects for artists including Amnesia Scanner\, Danny L Harle and Caroline Polachek.\nThanks to the grant given by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic\,\, everyone can enjoy 360° AV experience FOR FREE. The result of Sam Rolfes’s residency Fact Magazine\, a bizarre 360˚ online video can be seen with cardboard VR glasses or a VR headset.\nSam Rolfes is a Chicago and New York based mixed-format digital artist and director who has been called “L’Enfant terrible of digital arts” by Clot Magazine. He uses the human body as a mark making device and underlying structure\, crafting diffusive psychosexual worlds that sublimate space and identity. His work examines the mutability and malleability of flesh\, incorporating surreal performances through the lens of contemporary portraiture. He has worked with Danny Brown\, Rihanna and Squarepusher\, as well as making live 3D visuals for Evian Christ\, Mumdance\, Lightning Bolt\, and Teengirl Fantasy.\nSupported by Czech Centre London \n*** TO ENJOY THE 360° AV EXPERIENCE\, YOU WILL NEED CARDBOARD VR GLASSES*** \n1 October – Ethno Service & Štěpán Marko (AV live)\nCoorganised by Czech Centre London \nIf you like techno tinted with a dubby atmosphere then look no further. Tracks by Ethno Service are filled with thrill\, suspense and trippy haze\, which create an amazing cinematic ambience. Despite their name\, ES is not an ethno music cliché. It is proper heavyweight percussive dub from the jungle – where Mowgli would piss his pants and run away screaming – places with decent opium and streets with no name.\nFor the very first time Ethno Service will be accompanied by their own distinctive visuals\, which develops their language even further. At the beginning there was the Dusk. The Dusk was a Haze. The Haze was a Sound. That was the beginning. Moments of strobe light\, dripping from the ceiling. Over time\, the first clusters of Latin information wrapped in Sanskrit robes began to form from Arabic numerals. With six-sided pressure\, it first liquefied and later solidified. The primitive Artifact. There was a delicate movement on the temple floor. The small fossil card slowly slides toward the altar. Pure energy flows through the sonically engraved lettering. Ethno Service\, at your service. \n3 October – NIVVA (AV live)\n(World premiere)\nCo-organised by Czech Centre London\nVirtual musician or digital being? Or both? NIVVA is a music/an artwork from Prague\, Czech Republic. What sets it apart from other music bands is that the main face of this project is a digital avatar. NIVVA’s debut EP\, called EASY\, was released by Czech record label Bad Names (Margo\, Sundays on Clarendon Road) in February 2020.\nFour minimalist electronic songs on Easy EP tell stories of exploring the limits of intimacy and what happens when a digital avatar breaks the character. The upcoming work talks about the future of artificial intelligence and how the algorithms that surround us on a daily basis affect our lives. NIVVA hasn’t performed live yet\, Lunchmeat festival helps with the premiere of her first audiovisual show. \nAbout Czech Centre London:\nThe Czech Centre’s mission is to actively promote the Czech Republic by showcasing Czech culture\, innovations and creativity in the UK. SUMMARY:AI Science Café Series 2020: Mobility - is autonomous driving an answer to reducing traffic congestion in our cities?
DESCRIPTION:Cities are overly congested with traffic and pollution. At present the most widely discussed solution is urban on-demand mobility based self-driving technology. The envisioned automated mobility-on-demand (AMoD) systems employ a centrally-controlled fleet of self-driving vehicles to provide on-demand point-to-point transportation to the users of the system. Such systems promise to revolutionise user behaviour and significantly improve the efficiency of urban transportation. As a case study\, we will discuss and quantify the potential for car-sharing and ride-sharing to reduce the number of vehicles in the city of Prague\, its application to other cities around the world and the implications for policy making. \nThe discussion after the presentation will be chaired by   Dr Panagiotis Angeloudis. \nMichal Čáp is a Technical Lead in isee AI\, an MIT spin-off company developing self-driving technology\, and a research associate in the Artificial Intelligence Centre at the Czech Technical University in Prague. He has studied information technology\, agent technology and artificial intelligence and worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, USA and the Department of Cognitive Robotics\, TU Delft\, Netherlands. Motivated by the arrival of self-driving taxi companies\, he recently became interested in the analysis of transportation systems that employ large fleets of self-driving cars. \nDr Panagiotis Angeloudis is Senior Lecturer and Director of the Transport Systems and Logistics based in the Centre for Transport Studies at Imperial College London. He also leads the Port Operations Research and Technology Centre within the Centre for Transport Studies. His work to date has spanned the areas of network optimisation\, urban transport systems\, logistics and maritime transport.  \nPart of the AI SCIENCE CAFÉ SERIES 2020\nArtificial Intelligence is the new phenomenon of the 21st century and has evolved out of the realm of science fiction and at best\, a few technologically advanced minds and IT professionals\, to everyday topics of discussion and one of the key drivers of the future progress of humankind. The objective of the  AI Science Café series\, which will consist of five presentations by high profile\, world acclaimed experts\, is to introduce\, present and publicly discuss various topics that impact our professional as well as our personal lives. As AI topics clearly generate more questions than answers\, the series will strive to unveil trends and expectations from the inevitable social and technological changes which the future will bring. \nOrganized by: Czech Centre London

SUMMARY:Havana + Q&A with director Jana Bokova and BBC producer and presenter Alan Yentob
DESCRIPTION:This extraordinary documentary about life in Cuba opens with 16mm amateur footage of Fidel Castro’s triumphant revolution in 1959 moving between the pre-revolutionary past and the volatile present of Castro’s Cuba in 1989. Featuring an interview with the exiled Cuban poet Reinaldo Arena\, and a direct inspiration for Julian Schnabel’s film Before Night Falls\, Havana consists above all of residents talking about their homes\, their city and Cuba in the midst of Havana’s dilapidated\, ruined beauty. Striking\, haunting images are punctuated by voice-over poetry by leading writers and stories of artists and ordinary Cubans\, young and old such as an elderly lady who fell through the floor in her derelict building\, a poet seeking for his identity\, and a woman who would never again see her ageing mother\, exiled in America. Full of captivating music and Bokova’s understanding of life under communism and in exile this is a wonderfully lyrical and honest homage to Havana and its people.\n> UK – BBC Arena\, 1990\, 105´\, English subtitles \nFollowed by Q&A with director Jana Bokova and BBC producer and presenter Alan Yentob \nOrganised by the CZECH CENTRE LONDON \nPart of In Focus: Jana Bokova \nThe cinema is accessible through the reception of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in London\, 26 Kensington Palace Gardens\, London W8 4QY. \nFREE ADMISSION\, RESERVATION VIA EVENTBRITE\neventbrite.co.uk/e/havana-qa-with-jana-bokova-and-alan-yentob-tickets/ \nDoors open at 18.30.\nUnreserved seating.
