SUMMARY:Silent Systems: Breathing Devices (29th Made in Prague Festival)
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition curated by British curator Daré Dada\, gathers works by Appau Junior Boakye-Yiadom\, Filomena Borecká\, Esther Gaton\, Evar Hussanyi and Henrique Paris to reimagine breath as more than a biological act. \n\nBreathing becomes rhythm and pulse\, presence and absence\, the invisible measure of life that extends beyond the body into objects\, spaces\, and systems. It invites viewers to ask: What is a breath of a city\, a machine\, a material archive? How might breathing become a metaphor for cultural memory\, ecological interdependence\, or technological survival? Filomena Borecká’s practice\, attuned to the subtle energies of air and time\, anchors the exhibition’s meditation on breath as both force and metaphor. Here\, stillness is unsettled: objects expand and contract\, silent systems exhale\, and the unseen currents of existence ripple quietly through matter\, inviting us to reconsider our entanglement with the material world. The works gathered here challenge the presumed stillness of things\, offering instead an ecology of quiet urgencies\, of devices that hold air\, circulate energy\, or embody invisible rhythms. \n\nEXHIBITION OPENING\nFriday 31 October 2025\, 6 – 7.30 pm  \nFree entry\, REGISTER NOW\nJoint Private View with Breathing with ‘Breaths – Air Bladders’\nEXHIBITION DATES: 31 October 2025 – 16 January 2026\nVENUE\nVitrínka Gallery\, Czech Centre London\n30 Kensington Palace Gardens\, London\, W8 4QY\nOPENING HOURS:\nTue – Fri 10am – 5pm\n\nImage: “First Touch”\, Filomena Borecká\, ink and color pencils on paper (24 x 32 cm) Paris\, 2025 \nWhile exploring Silent Systems: Breathing Devices at Vitrínka Gallery\, you might also like to stop by the Czech Centre’s Bouda Gallery to see Filomena Borecká’s breathing sculpture.

SUMMARY:Brothers + Q&A with Mark Cornwall - Film & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:In this gripping true-life Cold War drama\, brothers Josef and Ctirad\, sons of legendary anti-Nazi resistance fighter Josef Mašín\, take up arms against the oppressive communist state. Spurred by their mother‘s defiance and its consequences\, the brothers embark on a violent resistance campaign. As their actions escalate\, a relentless policeman is hot on their trail\, forcing them into a harrowing escape. Crossing Czechoslovakia and East Germany\, pursued by Red Army soldiers and 20\,000 East German police in the most extensive manhunt in Cold War history\, their story unfolds as a fast-paced epic thriller. With a strong emotional impact and a focus on family bonds\, this film leaves audiences on the edge of their seats\, inviting them to reflect on a poignant story that still divides Czech society today. \nDior. SUMMARY:London Symphony Orchestra: Adámek and Beethoven - London Classical Concerts
DESCRIPTION:  \nCelebrating the Year of Czech Music\, the 28th Made In Prague Festival will launch at a concert by the LSO featuring Follow Me\, a Concerto for Violin and Orchestra by Czech composer Ondrej Adamek and Ludwig van Beethoven´s Symphony No 1 and Symphony No 4. Early Beethoven’s wit and jokes pair with a cat-and-mouse chase around the orchestra from Ondřej Adámek\, whose concerto invites listeners into a playful and increasingly wild imitation game between soloist and orchestra. Expect a dynamic dialogue of sounds and rhythms\, blending surprise with lots of joy. Composer and conductor Thomas Adès and the brilliant violinist Isabelle Faust join the Orchestra on stage for this compelling programme. \nProgramme: \nLudwig van Beethoven\nSymphony No. 1 (26 mins)\nOndřej Adámek\nFollow Me (Concerto for Violin and Orchestra) (24 mins)\nInterval\nLudwig van Beethoven\nSymphony No 4 (34 mins) \nThomas Adès conductor\nIsabelle Faust violin\nLondon Symphony Orchestra

SUMMARY:Vojtěch Mašek: The Sisters Dietl + Arvéd
DESCRIPTION:A book launch and conversation with Vojtěch Mašek followed by the screening of Vojtěch Mašek’s multi-award-winning film\, Arvéd. \n\n\n\n\nA multi-layered story uncovering a kind of mysterious evil hovering above two ageing sisters. Its mood is reminiscent of Charles Burns’s Black Hole\, but more in a…Czech way. Reflex \n\n\n\n\nVojtěch Mašek\, acclaimed Czech comic book author\, screenwriter and film director discusses with Peter Kesser\, The Sisters Dietl\, the best Czech graphic novel of 2018. Described as a mix of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks and Jaroslav Dietl’s The Hospital at the Edge of the Town series\, this horror detective story follows two sisters after one is subjected to what appears to be a brutal attack. Using varied cultural references as his inspiration  and drawing on memories of childhood fears\, and the desire for a safe hiding place\, Mašek explores identity change\, doppelgängers\, hallucination and altered states of mind to build up a multi-layered story complemented by a unique multi-layered art style. \n\n\n\nVojtěch Mašek\, The Sisters Dietl\, transl. Julia and Peter Sherwood\, Centrala Books 2021 \n\n\n\nFollowed by the screening of Vojtěch Mašek’s award-winning film\, Arvéd.\n\n\n\nArvéd\n\n\n\nVojtěch Mašek\,Czech Republic\, Slovakia  2022\, 120´Cast: Michal Kern\, Saša Rašilov\, Vojtěch Vodochodský\, Jaroslav Plesl \n\n\n\nA fascinating insight into the life and mind of Jiří Arvéd Smíchovský (1898–1951)\, a charismatic hermeticist and occultist\, who in his quest for knowledge) became first a Nazi collaborator\, then informer and witness in communist show trials. He makes a Faustian pact with Plaček\, a secret police investigator whose life he saved during the war. Plaček ensures that Arvéd gets life imprisonment instead of a death sentence and offers a deal: a rare occult book for each soul delivered. Arvéd (a superb Michal Kern) plays his role in the trials even when the political tide turns. Highly stylised\, this a remarkable thriller that delves into the maze of the deteriorating mind of a man who sells his soul. \n\n\n\nBest Film\, Best Screenplay\, Best Actor Awards at Czech Film Critics Awards 2022\n\n\n\nAbout Vojtěch Mašek\n\n\n\nVojtěch Mašek (b. 1977) is a comic book author and artist\, screenwriter and playwright. He co-wrote the screenplays for The Little Crusader (2017)\, which won best film award at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival\, and Occupation (2021)\, winner of three Czech Lion Awards\, and wrote and directed the multi-award winning film Arvéd. His children’s book Puppet\, Plum Pit\, Plum\, Plank and Back to Puppet (2018)\, with a story by Mašek and art by Chrudoš Valoušek\, won the prestigious Bologna Ragazzi Award. His comic books have received eight Muriel Awards. Since 2002 he and Džian Baban have been developing the surreally farcical world of Monstrkabaret Freda Brunolda (Fred Brunold’s Monster Cabaret)\, which has appeared in five comic books\, more than a dozen stage adaptations and in short films. They have also written two award-winning graphic novels with art by Jiří Grus. Mašek also worked with the writer Marek Šindelka on the contemporary graphic novel Svatá Barbora (Saint Barbara)\, art by Marek Pokorný\, 2018.  Mašek is the author of the internet hit Recykliteratura\, which builds on the avant-garde tradition of associative montages using photographs and texts found in books and magazines. \n\n\n\n\nAdmission: £7 (+ Eventbrite fee)\n\n\n\nBOOK NOW\n\n\n\n\nPart of the 27th Made In Prague Festival (3rd November – 10th December 2023) organized by the Czech Centre London.

SUMMARY:Innovations for a Sustainable Future - Private Viewing
DESCRIPTION:PRIVATE VIEWING: Thursday 13 July\, 6:30-8:30pm \n\n\n\nFree entry\, registration necessary (more info on website\, see below) \n\n\n\nA brand new interactive exhibition touching on the fast-evolving digital revolution as well as the pressing challenges faced by our generation. With both Europe and the world undergoing a major technological transformation\, new phenomena such as artificial intelligence are slowly making their way into all aspects of our lives\, from communication to health\, from culture to sustainability. What are the innovations and scientific discoveries shaping our future? \n\n\n\nThe Innovations for a Sustainable Future exhibition seeks to create a dialogue between science\, society\, culture\, and art. Its main aim is to address current global issues and the inevitable role science and new technologies will play in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set up by the United Nations in 2015 as a blueprint for a better\, more sustainable future for all. The 17 SDGs were adopted by all UN member states agreeing to work on\, among other things\, a plan to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger\, achieve gender equality and avert climate threats by 2030.This interactive augmented reality exhibition was artistically rendered by the renowned Czech graphic designer Pavel Fuksa\, drawing from the concept of the successful Czech Innovation Expo which travelled the world presenting Czech scientific discoveries and innovations. The new London exhibition highlights innovations and issues on a European level\, reflecting the higher purpose of science with special emphasis on the means needed to implement the ambitious SGDs. \n\n\n\nHow the Exhibition Works \n\n\n\nVisitors will see seemingly static outdoor panels with abstract symbols on the walls. After downloading the exhibition app (available free for Android and iOS)\, they will see the space around them come to life on their devices\, allowing them to explore in a fun and unique way a variety of scientific stories and fascinating information about technological innovations contributing to our sustainable future. \n\n\n\nRegistration necessary: \n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite\n\n\nExhibition Website: \n\n\n\n\nExhibition dates: 14 July – 30 September\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition was created by the Czech Centres in collaboration with the Czech Technology Agency. SUMMARY:Ear – the book behind a Czech film legend
DESCRIPTION:A book launch & film screening of the Czech film classic Ear.\n \nTo mark the publishing of a first English translation of Jan Procházka’s masterpiece Ear\, David Vaughan and Peter Hames discuss both the book and the film\, followed by a screening of the 1970 classic\, considered one of the greatest of all Czech films. \nThe Ear – Ucho in Czech – was the culmination of ten years of fruitful cooperation between the director Karel Kachyňa and screenwriter Jan Procházka. It is set in the period of the Stalinist purges in 1950s Czechoslovakia. A senior government official Ludvík and his wife Anna come back from a drunken party at the ministry to find that their house has been bugged. A gripping psychological drama follows\, as they await a knock on the door. \nThe novella Ear is perhaps Jan Procházka’s greatest work. He was one of the most popular and prolific Czech writers of the 1960s\, closely identified with the reforms and growing artistic freedoms of the time. It combines the economy of Hemingway with the tension of Hitchcock\, set in a stifling totalitarian environment. \nFor the first time Ear has been published in English – by Karolinum Press in a translation by Mark Corner. \nDavid Vaughan\, who wrote the afterword to the new edition\, is a writer\, broadcaster\, journalist and university lecturer. \nPeter Hames is a film historian and Visiting Professor in Film Studies at Staffordshire University.

SUMMARY:Erotikon + music accompaniment by Stephen Horne
DESCRIPTION:The forerunner of Machatý’s more infamous Ecstasy\, this silent masterpiece tells an emotional story exploring the consequences of a missed train and one night’s love at a provincial railway station. \n\nAndrea (outstanding Ita Rina)\, left pregnant by George\, a city playboy\, continues to dream of the passion she experienced and faces a moral dilemma when\, as a married woman\, she meets him years later. Machatý\, together with cinematographer Václav Vích and avant-garde set designer Alexander Hackenschmied (a.k.a. Sasha Hammid) transformed a simple story into a work of compelling effect\, creating an arresting visual style and cinematic language full of poetic details that offered a provocative view of the inner world of the characters while creating a benchmark in the development of erotic photography. This 1993 restoration includes previously censored footage. \nThe event is part of the 26th Made in Prague Festival organized by Czech Centre London.

SUMMARY:The Last Race
DESCRIPTION:A gripping drama telling the true story of Czech skiing pioneers Hanc and Vrbata\, German athlete Emmerich Rath and one fateful race that took place in the Krkonose mountains in 1913. Although Hanc promised his pregnant wife never to race again\, he can’t resist the opportunity to beat the Germans in the first-ever Czech-German cross-country race and joins the competition. When the sun is replaced by a blizzard\, the race turns into a battle for survival\, and true friendship is tested. Using historical records to reconstruct the race\, the film sets straight events that have been reinterpreted by the political ideologies of the past\, creating a captivating thriller set against a backdrop of beautiful mountain panoramas where national rivalries are set aside in a race to save a fellow human life. \nFollowed by Q&A with director TOMÁŠ HODAN \nThe movie is part of the 26th Made in Prague Festival organised by Czech Centre London. The popular multi-genre festival is back again for its 26th edition. Representing one of the oldest national celebrations of European culture in the UK\, the festival presents an exciting programme covering film\, music\, science\, visual art and literature in various venues across London and beyond. Take your pick and immerse yourself in Czech culture this fall.

SUMMARY:Somewhere Over the Chemtrails
DESCRIPTION:The screening is part of the Made in Prague festival organized by the Czech Centre. \nThe friendship of two volunteer firefighters who more often quench their thirst than put out fires\, is put to the test when\, during Easter celebrations\, a van crashes into the village fountain and the driver is nowhere to be found. Convinced of a terrorist attack\, lonely widower Brona grabs the opportunity to prove his worth and protect his community. Turning the fire brigade into a militia he is hell bent on capturing the terrorist refusing the voice of reason provided by his friend Standa and his pregnant wife. Full of irony but also empathy and understanding the director gently mocks the fear of the unknown and conspiracy theories\, such as the clandestine dispersal of chemical substances which can only be eliminated by vinegar\, while providing an affectionate and humorous look at human weaknesses. A brilliantly acted\, compelling comedy that pays homage to Forman’s The Firemen’s Ball.

SUMMARY:Václav Havel European Dialogues: Peace and Democracy in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Václav Havel called for ‘living in truth’ and ‘an existential revolution’ as a response to the crisis of our civilisation. The Ukraine War has been the most recent evidence of this crisis. Another evidence is the climate change and growing state of environmental emergency\, which confront us with urgent questions of sustainable development\, environmental justice\, rights and inequalities and calls for global political actions to tackle grave risks. The Czech Centre\, together with the Centre of Law and Society and UCL\, has organised two-panel discussions focusing on the issues of peace\, democracy\, environmental justice and the crisis of our civilisation. \n\n\n\nSession I: From Normalization to Loss of Norms: Václav Havel and the Forms of Democratic Backsliding\n\n\n\nThe decades following the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968 were dubbed the period of ‘Normalization’: a chilling term intended to designate a return to the efficient social controls that had been the norm across the Soviet Bloc before the democratizing and liberalizing movement that culminated in the Prague Spring in mid-1968. ‘Normalization’ was not normal at all. Rather it shut down social\, political\, and economic activities that showed any independence or strayed too far from the strict Party lines. The decade leading up to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 does not yet have a commonly accepted label. Still\, one of the prime political characteristics—almost uniformly across the globe—has been the loss of political norms and the rise of a politics of impudence\, where nothing matters beyond the accumulation of power and resources for elite social groups. Havel’s contrast between living in truth and politics of normalisation informs authoritarian and democratic regimes\, and destructive ‘new normalities’ are typical of Brexit\, Trump and Putin with his disinformation wars preceding the aggressive war against Ukraine. This panel will discuss similarities and differences in these related social dynamics—the imposition of restrictive norms and the elimination of all social and political norms—and how Havel’s writings help us to think through these questions. \n\n\n\nSpeakers:Jiří Pehe (NYU/Prague)Magda Leichtová (Oxford)Lenka Buštíková (Oxford) \n\n\n\nModerator:Jiří Přibáň (Cardiff) \n\n\n\nSession II: Totalitarianism\, Pre-\, Post-\, and Neo-? George Orwell\, Hannah Arendt\, and Václav Havel\n\n\n\nIn his most famous political essay\, titled ‘The Power of the Powerless’\, Havel described the ‘Normalization’-era Czechoslovakia in which he found himself as ‘post-totalitarian’—a phrase that may surprise many readers today who are familiar with the neo-Stalinist practices of the regime Havel wrote to oppose. Havel’s point\, however\, was that Normalization entailed a form of authoritarian control in which even those in power no longer believed in the aims they claimed to pursue but simply went through the motions in automatized\, mechanical fashion. Orwell and Arendt’s groundbreaking analyses of earlier ‘classical’ forms of totalitarianism\, composed in the 1940s and 1950s in the shadow or aftermath of Nazi and Stalinist abominations\, focused on the manipulation of belief and the manufacture of misguided ‘faith’. On the other hand\, Havel explores the transformation of totalitarianism into a system beyond belief that operates on the basis of empty public rituals and ideological lies traded for the minimum of private autonomy and comfort. This panel will bring these three thinkers into dialogue to reflect on the varieties of totalitarian experiences and what they might tell us about our current socio-political situation. \n\n\n\nSpeakers:Tim Beasley-Murray (UCL)Jean Seaton (Orwell Foundation)Uta Staiger (UCL) \n\n\n\nModerator:Peter Zusi (UCL)

SUMMARY:Innovations for a Sustainable Future (AR Interactive Exhibition)
DESCRIPTION:PRIVATE VIEW: Thursday 6 October 2022\, 6 – 8 pm \nExhibition: 06 Oct 2022 – 02 Dec 2022\, Mon-Fri 10 am – 6pm \nFree entry\, registration necessary (more info on website\, see below) \nA brand new interactive exhibition touching on the fast-evolving digital revolution as well as the pressing challenges faced by our generation. \nBoth Europe and the world are undergoing a major technological transformation. New phenomena such as artificial intelligence are slowly making their way into all aspects of our lives\, from communication to health\, from culture to sustainability. What are the innovations and scientific discoveries shaping our future? \nThe Innovations for a Sustainable Future exhibition seeks to create a dialogue between science\, society\, culture and art. Its main aim is to address current global issues and the inevitable role science and new technologies will play in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set up by the United Nations in 2015 as a blueprint for a better\, more sustainable future for all. The 17 SDGs were adopted by all UN member states agreeing to work on\, among other things\, a plan to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger\, achieve gender equality and avert climate threats by 2030. \nThis interactive augmented reality exhibition was artistically rendered by the renowned Czech graphic designer Pavel Fuksa\, drawing from the concept of the successful Czech Innovation Expo which travelled the world presenting Czech scientific discoveries and innovations. The new London exhibition highlights innovations and issues on a European level\, reflecting the higher purpose of science with special emphasis on the means needed to implement the ambitious SGDs. \nHow the Exhibition Works \nVisitors will enter a seemingly empty room with only abstract symbols on the walls. After downloading the exhibition app (available free for Android and iOS)\, they will see the space around them come to life on their devices\, allowing them to explore in a fun and unique way a variety of scientific stories and fascinating information about technological innovations likely to shape our future. \nThe exhibition was created as a joint project of the Czech Centres and the Czech Technology Agency. It is part of the 2022 Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU Programme. \nThe London exhibition is organised  by the Czech Centre London and the European Parliament Liaison Office in the United Kingdom.

SUMMARY:Ukrainian Debate Series: Information War in Russia
DESCRIPTION:A panel discussion Deborah Haynes\, Sky News; Jade McGlynn\, Middlebury Institute; Václav Štětka\, Loughborough University \n\n\n\nAs millions of people in the democratic world condemn the Russian military aggression toward Ukraine\, which has now evolved into a prolonged war conflict with a detrimental impact on hundreds of thousands of human lives and severe damage to the Ukrainian economy\, the aggressor seems to maintain strong support for its “special military operation” inside Russia. Shall the Russian state-controlled media apparatus receive the credit for the Russian public’s overwhelming endorsement of President Putin? How do the Russians perceive the spread of misinformation\, manipulation of public opinion and a total crackdown on the media? Should the Russian state-controlled television RT be banned from Western media space or shall the public have free choice? Is there a case to transpose the military conflict in Ukraine to an Information War in Russia?

SUMMARY:DOCU-MONDAYS: Talking About Adultery
DESCRIPTION:In open testimonies by husbands\, wives\, and lovers\, this highly stylized introspective film presents different forms of marriage and searches for the meaning of this institution in our post-consumerist society. \nThrough a visually dominant text conversation between the central couple R. and B.\, the viewer gradually begins to identify with the stories of anonymous heroes who balance fulfillment of love and sexuality in relationships\, cope with their frustration\, or describe the rediscovered value of marriage. Adam Olha\, Jan Daňhel\, Czech Republic / Slovakia 2020\, 117´\nCast: Jan Švankmajer\, Jaromír Kallista \nThe world is divided into two unequal camps. Those who have never heard of Jan Svankmajer and know that they have come face to face with genius.\nAntony Lane\, New Yorker \nThe legendary artist\, filmmaker and surrealist\, Jan Švankmajer\, whose work has inspired artists such as Terry Gilliam and the Quay Brothers\, bid farewell to feature filmmaking in 2018 with his swan song\, Insects. SUMMARY:Meky - Miro Žbirka - A Close-up Portrait of a Music Legend

Šimon Šafránek\, Czech Republic / Slovakia\, 2020\, 80 min\, English subtitlesCast: Miro Žbirka \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n‘We wanted to make a film portrait … Without sentiment and pathos\, but with humour. On the visual side twinkling\, energetic and subversive\, with loud music and above all sincere\, emotional and human.’Šimon Šafránek \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt’s 1982 and a bespectacled outsider\, the elegant singer Miro Žbirka known as Meky wins the Czech Grammy Awards (Golden Nightingale) shockingly beating the long-term reigning champion. In 2020 his songs are still played on Czech radios and he has even recorded an album at the famous Abbey Road Studios. Director Šimon Šafránek follows Meky for a year\, from his flat to a crowded concert in London\, from backstage to a sold out Prague O2 Arena to reveal the modest and level-headed man behind the famous songs. Meky\, who has experienced revolutions in both music and society\, talks openly about his English roots\, his deep personal losses\, his rise and fall from fame including a surprising comeback\, his brushes with communist power\, and his all-encompassing love of music and faith in his own journey. With access to previously unseen private archives Šafránek\, a Czech Lion winner for his King Skate documentary\, has created a dynamic close-up portrait of a popular singer full of honesty\, humour and surprises. \n\n\n\nThe screening will be accompanied by LIVE Q&A WITH SINGER MIRO ŽBIRKA & DIRECTOR ŠIMON ŠAFRÁNEK12 Nov\, 7 pm / Streamed live on the Czech Centre London Facebook page \n\n\n\nThe film will be available to rent (from UK only) for £4.99 from 10:00 on Sat 12 Nov GMT till 10:00 on Tue 15 Nov 2020 GMT on Czech Centre Vimeo on Demand via https://vimeo.com/ondemand/meky \n\n\n\nOrganised by the Czech Centre as part of Made in Prague ON/OFF Festival. \n\n\n\nCo-promoted by Pishter Ltd. and supported by Arts Council England
