DESCRIPTION:After four sold-out concerts in the Philharmonie de Paris and L’Auditorium of Lyon\, Rone brings hisacclaimed album L(oo)ping to London’s Barbican Centre. The album saw the producer collaboratewith the National Orchestra of Lyon to breathe new life into some of his most famed pieces. InLondon\, Rone will be joined on stage by Britain’s acclaimed London Contemporary Orchestra andconductor Robert Ames. L(oo)ping premiers at the Barbican on the 10th of March 2024. \n\n\n\nThroughout his long musical career\, Rone has dipped his toes in all corners of the arts\,collaborating with heaps of France’s most distinguished contemporary minds from the writer AlainDamasio\, the Marseilles Ballet group\, (LA)HORDE and film directors Jacques Audiard and SpikeJonze\, to name a few. This versatility has been central to his music and has distinguished Rone asof the most exciting acts in electronic music\, bestowing him high honours such as a Cesar andCannes Film Festival award for best film score. With his new album L(oo)ping\, Rone pushes hisdazzling acrobatics further with music that twirls and twists alongside the orchestra. \n\n\n\nIt was while working with Romain Allender (The Grand Budapest Hotel\, The Shape of Water) thatRone began to bridge his electronic world with that of the orchestra. The arranger selected tracksfrom Rone’s repertoire that would lend themselves to symphonic reinterpretations and brought these to stage in France. Amongst the selected songs is Tikkoun\, the theme of the series D’argent et de sang for which Rone released the soundtrack this year. The electro-classical pieces received rapturous responses from audiences and critics and would mark the birth of L(oo)ping with the album’s live recording followed in 2023. \n\n\n\nIn March\, conductor Robert Ames will lead the London Contemporary Orchestra to bringL(oo)ping to life in London’s Barbican Centre. “I have been a fan of Rone since first hearing hisalbum Spanish Breakfast. It’s been great to hear him move deeper and deeper intoorchestral music. L(oo)ping is a genuine hybrid of electronic and acoustic sound worldswhich will really utilise the full range of the London Contemporary Orchestras skills. We arein for a treat\,” states the conductor and LCO co-founder. The London Contemporary Orchestra isone of Britain’s brightest beacons for new music\, having worked with well-known artists such asRadiohead\, Frank Ocean\, Steve Reich\, Mica Levi and Vivienne Westwood and with a diverse nextgeneration of players. “I am extremely proud and happy to collaborate with the LCO andconductor Robert Ames for whom I have the deepest respect. DESCRIPTION:Choreographer and theatremaker Rhiannon Faith would like to invite you to step into an evening at the local pub\, but a night at the local like no other. Here you can explore the beauty of humanity and the eternal need for community and compassion\, take the weight off and help each other lighten the load and restore our weary souls. \n\n\n\nCo-commissioned by the Barbican\, London and Harlow Playhouse\, Lay Down Your Burdens is a radically tender dance theatre show that invites you into the pub to explore the beauty of humanity… \n\n\n\nTitled Lay Down Your Burdens\, the 120-minute (inc interval) show is set in a rundown but friendly and welcoming British pub\, hosted by charismatic landlady Sara who welcomes the same regulars each night\, listening to their stories and woes and serving them the same drinks. Until\, one day\, a stranger with an excess of baggage gets blown in from the cold… \n\n\n\nThe show is set on a thrust stage with the audience on three sides as guests in the pub. We meet the regulars and hear their stories as they come in and take their usual seats. In this friendly setting\, the guests (audience) are encouraged to join the conversations that go around the bar. With radical tenderness\, humour and intoxicating behaviour we can ultimately restore our weary souls\, rediscover what has been lost and lay down our collective weariness\, however tuneful that may be. \n\n\n\nInspired by the Bob Dylan song Lay Down Your Weary Tune\, music is a key element of the work. The pub setting features an original score by John Victor (of London band Ghengahr) played by live string section\, and the voices of the audience are recorded\, through unstructured and structured tasks and supported testimonials. The result is a collective weary tune\, edited live\, bespoke to each performance and place and played as the final moment of the show. \n\n\n\nWith extraordinary physical performance\, live music\, dubious karaoke and riotous pub games\, this visceral dance theatre world draws together those who have been estranged or never even dreamed they were connected. \n\n\n\nThe world premiere performances of this exciting and vital new work will be at The Pit\, Barbican 21 to 25 November 2023. \n\n\n\nRhiannon Faith explained ‘With Lay Down Your Burdens we’re seeking to create a vital sense of community for audiences and participants and to build a platform for compassion and connection. Ultimately inviting all members of the community to a place where they belong\, where they feel seen\, and where they can experience joy and togetherness\, forging happier and healthier communities by providing a catalyst for positive social change.’ \n\n\n\nIn The Guardian\, Lyndsey Winship described Rhiannon as ‘one of the few UK artists making dance theatre that is pointedly socially conscious’ . \n\n\n\nLay Down Your Burdens was grown out of conversations with communities and developed from real-life experiences of the company\, who works with psychologist Joy Griffiths to develop responses to burdens that are caring\, creative and therapeutic. The show shines a light on individual suffering and discusses personal grief and serious illness. Suitable for over 16s\, it contains strong language and scenes that some may find upsetting. \n\n\n\nIt is performed and devised by a cast of six intergenerational performers (Shelley Eva Haden\, Donald Hutera\, Dominic Coffey\, Sam Ford\, Sara Turner\, Finetta Sidgwick) and two musicians\, (India Merrett\, Anna Clock). \n\n\n\nThe company have recently become the first UK company to be invited to perform at the Wuzhen Theatre Festival in China. They will take their previous show DROWNTOWN to the annual event\, considered one of the premier festivals in China and Asia\, for three performances 23 – 25 October. \n\n\n\nRhiannon Faith Company makes radically tender dance theatre\, working nationally on big stages and locally with communities on the margins\, always with social change and care at its heart. Based in Harlow\, Essex\, with nationwide impact\, they are making bold\, ambitious moves to secure a future as global leaders in original dance theatre with a social purpose\, to champion community transformation and authentic belonging for all. SUMMARY:Hamed Sinno: Poems of Consumption
DESCRIPTION:The iconic Lebanese-American indie-rock musician Hamed Sinno debuts their solo material for this year’s Shubbak Festival. \nAfter leading up the most prominent indie-rock band of the Arab world Mashrou’ Leila\, the prodigious composer returns to the stage with a new project co-commissioned by Shubbak Festival and the Barbican. \nPoems of Consumption is a literary song cycle that explores the resonances between Amazon-era consumerism\, mental illness\, unrequited love\, and environmental collapse\, without purporting to have an alternative or moral high-ground. It’s a portrait of Nero\, a desolate working-class melancholic crying at Whole Foods while the world outside comes to a boil. The compositions juxtapose the romanticism evoked by the sound of a string section\, with hyper-industrial electronica created out of the sounds of consumerism (crumpling cellophane\, bubble wrap\, unboxing\, ripping plastic) to swing between dancefloor & aural assault. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCo-commissioned by Shubbak Festival and the Barbican. DESCRIPTION:The Berliner Barock Solisten and pianist Alexandros Kapelis come together for Bach’s six concertos for solo keyboard and orchestra: a tour-de-force not seen on the concert stage in recent memory. \n\n\n\n\nComprised of virtuosic soloists from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra\, the Berliner Barock Solisten has created a unique approach to performing music of the 17th and 18th centuries. Tonight they’re joined by pianist Alexandros Kapelis for his Barbican debut\, giving us a rare opportunity to hear these Bach masterpieces in one go. \nA pianist who ‘plays the classics with astonishing taste’ (Martha Argerich\, Classica Magazine)\, Kapelis is the first in 17 years to record this set. Alongside the Berliner Barock Solisten\, in all their ‘precise\, polished perfection’ (Gramophone)\, we’ll hear Bach’s landmark concertos in full colour.

Seemingly abandoned\, there is no one to help but themselves. Stuck between the remains of a broken community and the vast bleakness of the sea\, they struggle with isolation\, shame and failed support systems. \nDROWNTOWN’s live world premiere was set for June 2020 at London’s Barbican. In reaction to the pandemic Faith has teamed up with award-winning Big Egg Films to create a stunning multi camera film version of the show. \nBold and brave\, the show uses autobiographical testimonials and text to give voice to the vulnerable and unheard in Britain’s areas of social deprivation. With tenderness and honesty\, the show holds up a mirror to a society at tipping point. DROWNTOWN arrives to help save our world from drowning. \nRhiannon Faith explained ‘DROWNTOWN was made with a hope to heal a broken world.
