SUMMARY:The Good Women
DESCRIPTION:It’s the 1960s and from the counterculture to Woodstock\, the world is changing. But not in conservative Switzerland\, where women did not get the vote until the 1970s and were legally confined to the kitchen and household. Bette\, the star of a popular TV cooking show\, and Trudy\, a housewife\, are about to change that. \n\n\n\n“The Good Women” is a brand-new funny\, bold and romantic piece of theatre inspired by a true story about two extraordinary women.

SUMMARY:Post Sex Spagbol @ VAULT
DESCRIPTION:What happens when you mix Krissy\, an irresponsible ball of anxiety\, with a classroom full of gullible teen girls? \n\n\n\nAfter being handed a job as a counsellor and sex-ed teacher\, Krissy purposely leads a classroom full of goggle-eyed girls down a motorway of mistakes. Fuelled by her own flaws at a religious all-girls boarding school\, she shaves away any expectation of a perfect role model. With a desire for destruction\, Krissy intentionally feeds bad advice to the hormone-riddled girls\, from questionable kinks to the swimming pool’s secret sex shack\, while being forced to face the femininity that the world around her has trained her to hate. \n\n\n\nTold by a three-women ensemble\, this comedic story of sex\, love and spag bol explores self-love\, womanhood and growing up … as well as vibrators\, funerals\, the twelve disciples\, piss play and THAT mint shower gel. \n\n\n\n“Funnier than Fleabag! I predict this show will be a major hit on TV one day. See it now\, in a small room\, while you have the chance.” – Christopher Brett Bailey.

SUMMARY:The Good Women
DESCRIPTION:After its successful run at VAULT Festival\, “The Good Women” comes to Greenwich Theatre. \n\n\n\nWelcome to 1960s Zürich. While elsewhere\, hippies are celebrating free love and The Beatles and Janis Joplin are rising to fame\, Swiss women still don’t even have the vote. \n\n\n\nBette – the host of a regional TV cooking show – and Trudy – a housewife with a mild alcohol problem – are about to change that – and question their life choices\, their politics\, their sexualities\, and what it means to be a “good woman” in the process. \n\n\n\nYou’ll laugh\, you’ll cry\, and you’ll meet two extraordinary women. \n\n\n\nPRAISE FOR “THE GOOD WOMEN”: \n\n\n\n“The poignant two-hander depicts burgeoning love against a backdrop of political struggle. Simply staged\, the romcom plot balances witty humour\, social injustice & emancipation.” – Fringe Biscuit \n\n\n\n“This thoughtful glimpse into the difficulties faced by women in the 1960s is gently uplifting” – The British Theatre Guide.

SUMMARY:Women in Focus: Monika Čejková
DESCRIPTION:Art historian\, writer and curator of the Modern and Contemporary Art Collection at the National Gallery Prague\, Monika Čejková\, will open our new talk series\, Women in Focus. Monika will discuss her interest in contemporary art\, which paved her journey to becoming an author and curator. She will also describe her recent projects\, mostly dealing with the notion and modification of art in the digital age. Specifically\, she will talk about the philosophy of new technologies\, artificial intelligence\, cyberculture and the topics of the post-gender world\, post-humanism and digisexuality. \n\n\n\nMonika’s talk will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience. \n\n\n\nAbout the speaker: \n\n\n\nMonika Čejková is a curator of the next Fotograf Festival 2023: #Hypertension23 at National Gallery Prague and Ora et lege II at Broumov Monastery\, 2023. Recent exhibitions include\, e.g.\, The Palace of Concrete Poetry at Writers House of Georgia in Tbilisi (2022)\, Neo-rising at Polansky Gallery in Prague (2022)\, Ora et lege I at Broumov Monastery (2021)\, Fantasy Finery at Berlínskej model Gallery in Prague (2021)\, Blasted Heathat AM 180 Gallery in Prague (2020). She studied the History of Art at Charles University in Prague. She is currently undergoing a curatorial residency at the Delfina Foundation in London\, during which she plans to continue to explore the theme of art in the (post) digital age and extend her research to art about the new identity of the human being whose original form has been abstracted by digital space. \n\n\n\nIn 2020\, Monika launched a long-term nomadic project titled “Ora et lege” – a critical dialogue between contemporary art and the teachings of the Benedictine order and the Catholic Church. This project is thematically focused on the work of contemporary visual artists with text and paved the way for another subject that Monika is currently exploring: the literary turn in visual art\, which has brought various forms of authorial writing to the fore relation to the overabundance of digital text. \n\n\n\nMore info: \n\n\n\nwww.monikacejkova.com \n\n\n\nwww.instagram.com/monika_cejkova \n\n\n\nPART OF WOMEN IN FOCUS \n\n\n\nWomen In Focus is Czech Centre London’s new programme series introducing inspiring female personalities and their accomplished professional journeys. The themes of the discussions will include the arts\, the fashion industry\, architecture\, ballet\, and many other professional fields. \n\n\n\nThe series aims to unveil specific intricacies in various fields through dialogue and open discussion with the audience. Our speakers will also address the challenges that they encountered as professional women working in often male-dominated environments\, and they’ll share practices that led to their successful and rewarding accomplishments.

SUMMARY:Kateřina Tučková: The Last Goddess
DESCRIPTION:Kateřina Tučková\, leading Czech writer and 2022 winner of The State Award for Literature\, discusses with scholar Dr Rajendra Chitnis The Last Goddess\, her award-winning novel and most successful book to date with more than 100\,000 copies sold in the Czech Republic alone\, which has finally been published in English. Based on extensive historical research and powerful storytelling\, the novel traces a community of ‘goddesses‘\, female healers in the White Carpathians\, pursued by both Nazis and Communists. Masterfully weaving together fact\, folklore\, and fiction and oscillating between past and present while exploring the extraordinary history of goddesses\, Tučková incisively and with great panache comments on Czech society throughout the 20th century.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA book launch and conversation with Katerina Tučková and Dr Rajendra Chitnis\n\nKateřina Tučková is a leading Czech writer\, playwright\, art historian and curator. She has written four books published in twenty two languages. More than 300\,000 copies of her books have been sold in the Czech Republic alone. Her novel Gerta / Vyhnání Gerty Schnirch  won the Magnesia Litera Readers’ award and was shortlisted for the Jiří Orten Prize and the Josef Škvorecký Prize in 2010. The Last Goddess / Žítkovské bohyně won the Josef Škvorecký Award and the Czech Bestseller Prize in 2012 and the Magnesia Litera Readers‘ Award and the Czech Book Prize Readers‘ Award in 2013. In 2017\, she was given the Freedom\, Democracy and Human Rights Award by the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes and received the Premio Salerno Libro d’Europa. In 2022 Katerina Tučkova was awarded The State Prize for Literature for the novel Bílá Voda (The White Water). www.katerina-tuckova.cz\n\nRajendra Chitnis is associate professor of Czech at the University of Oxford. Alongside the books Literature in Post-Communist Russia and Eastern Europe\, Vladislav Vančura: The Heart of the Czech Avant-garde and the edited volume Translating the Literatures of Small European Nations\, he has published numerous studies about twentieth- and twenty-first-century Czech literature and contributed afterwords to English translations of novels by Antonín Bajaja\, Jaroslav Durych\, Viktor Dyk\, Ladislav Fuks\, Daniela Hodrová\, Josef Jedlička and others.\n\nKateřina Tučková: The Last Goddess\nTranslated by Andrew Oakland\nPublished by Amazon Crossing\, 2022\nThe book has been adapted for the stage by the Zlín City Theatre\, the Brno City Theatre\, and the Divadlo pod Palmovkou Theatre\nTranslated into twenty languages\n\nOnce upon a time\, a group of women with extraordinary abilities lived high in the hills of the White Carpathians. They knew how to heal people and help them in misery\, they knew how to cope with trouble\, and they could see the future. The so-called Žítková goddesses passed down their abilities from generation to generation. Dora Idesová is the last member of their family. She did not learn their art\, but studied ethnography and decided to write an extensive scientific study about them. In the late 1990s\, she discovered an operative file on an “internal enemy of the state” – her aunt\, goddess Surmena. The file was created by the StB (the State Security)\, and kept in the archives of the Ministry of the Interior. Dora discovers the fate of the women from the village of Žítková and is surprised to find out that although she did not become a goddess herself\, she is also an integral part of the secret traditions.

SUMMARY:"The Good Women" at Kensington & Chelsea Festival
DESCRIPTION:“The Good Women” is a brand-new funny\, bold and romantic piece of theatre inspired by a true queer love story. \n\n\n\nIt’s the 1960s\, the world is changing. Protesters take the streets against the Vietnam war\, hippies celebrate free love and a young band called “The Beatles” is rising to fame. But not in Switzerland\, where women did not get the vote until the 1970s and were legally confined to the kitchen and household. \n\n\n\nBette\, the star of a popular TV cooking show\, and Trudy\, a housewife\, are about to change that. \n\n\n\nYou’ll laugh\, you’ll cry\, you’ll meet two extraordinary women \n\n\n\n“The poignant two-hander depicts burgeoning love against a backdrop of political struggle. Simply staged\, the romcom plot balances witty humour\, social injustice & emancipation.” – Fringe Biscuit \n\n\n\n“This thoughtful glimpse into the difficulties faced by women in the 1960s is gently uplifting\, An encouragement to continue the fight for change.” – The British Theatre Guide

Experience TRUE New York style stand up comedy for one night only!Chatterbrain \n\n\n\n(Rebecca Schuster) \n\n\n\nZone in for this raucous explosion of character-comedy exploring overthinking\, indecision\, and that absolute wazzock of an inner critic. \n\n\n\nWhilst humming and hawing over a plate of beans\, Rebecca Schuster realised overthinking was the only thing holding her back. She decides to stop listening to her inner-judge. Along the way\, she discovers truths about herself she didn’t want to know. \n\n\n\nWho is she without that nagging voice inside her head? What if there was a cure for overthinking? Is killing the inner critic really the answer? And what the hell does marmalade have to do with it? \n\n\n\nChatterbrain is the debut solo show from Rebecca Schuster\, Soho Theatre alumni\, writer and comedian. Analysis paralysis is her M.O. and nobody can tell her to snap out of it! Character-comedy overthought\, as it shouldn’t be. \n\n\n\n“sublime to watch\, this lady has super talent” – London Theatre OneBlue Pencil \n\n\n\n(as told by Mariana Feijó) \n\n\n\nIt’s a journey through my life\, from my conservative\, Portuguese Catholic roots to exploring my sexual identity in London’s vibrant queer scene\, and the comic conflict between those two realities. I want to challenge people’s perception of world politics\, through the story of Portugal’s 48 year long dictatorship and how that affected its democratic future\, enticing the audience to work towards an equitable future. After working with Duckie in a huge immersive theatre production that was radical\, queer and educational\, I want to make similar work\, leading people into laughter and activism without it feeling didactic. I’m inspired by the surprise that people who don’t share my lived experience\, show when they learn of countries in western Europe that weren’t in democracies as late as the 70s\, and that the freedoms of Democracy can be taken away. It’s an important story and it’s my story to tell. \n\n\n\nTICKETS \n\n\n\nWe know it’s tough time for people in this cost of living times\, and set a few different price options. If you can afford the Comfort ticket\, please do choose that option as we’re also living through the same times. If the Tough Times ticket is still a stretch for you\, and you’d really like to come\, do get in touch\, as we believe no one should be denied access due lack of funds. \n\n\n\nACCESSIBILITY \n\n\n\nUnfortunately the venue is up a flight of stairs – if you know of an affordable venue in London where we wouldn’t need to make this disclaimer\, please send it our way! \n\n\n\nAt this point in time\, we can’t afford to hire BSL interpreters or audio describers\, but there may be future showings where this will be a possibility. \n\n\n\nThere might be loud music and sudden noises\, but you’re welcome to enter and leave the performance space freely\, and move around if you feel the need. \n\n\n\nThe room is up a flight of stairs from a busy pub downstairs\, whose entrance is towards Whitechapel Road\, in a busy side road that also leads to the London Royal Hospital. \n\n\n\nMariana Feijó \n\n\n\nQueer\, Portuguese multidisciplinary artist based in London. Her work is inspired by a need to communicate and create community\, drawing from personal experience. They’re influenced by historical archives and research\, using stories old and new to connect with audiences. They’ve studied at the prestigious institutions the Upright Citizen’s Brigade and The Brooklyn Comedy Collective in New York\, and are a Soho Theatre Lab alumni. They’ve worked with Duckie\, on their heritage project Princess\, from research to performance. As part of an LGBTQ community group at the British Museum\, they’ve created bespoke performance pieces for their Pride event\, two years running. \n\n\n\nRebecca Schuster \n\n\n\nRebecca Schuster is a Canadian comedian based in London England. She has been improvising since 2011 and has trained with Improv Olympics\, Free Association\, Monkey Toast and members of the Upright Citizens Brigade. When not improvising\, Rebecca writes sketch comedy\, performs solo character acts\, and eats baked beans with her bare hands straight out of a can. She is a Soho Theatre alumni. \n\n\n\nJen IvesJen Ives is a stand up comedian & writer from London. She has written for Channel 4\, Hattrick\, Radio 4\, Dave (among others) and has appeared on Joe Lycett’s Big Pride Party\, and Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared. Jen has supported Jessica Fostekew on tour and frequently headlines shows in London and beyond! \n\n\n\nJen’s debut Edinburgh hour ‘Peak Trans’ sold out it’s run in Edinburgh last year (you can watch it free here \n\n\n\n‘Jen Ives is a wonderful comedian. I’ve discovered her comedy in recent years\, and I can’t get enough of it.’ \n\n\n\n(James Acaster) \n\n\n\n‘A brilliant comedian’ \n\n\n\n(Joe Lycett)

SUMMARY:These Boots Are Made For Walkin’
DESCRIPTION:Polly Vinyl & The Plastic Boot Band Presents:  These Boots Are Made For Walkin’ \nA celebration of two decades of trail-blazing female singers and songwriters \nThese Boot are Made for Walkin’– after Nancy Sinatra’s iconic song from 1966 – is a dynamic show celebrating the fabulous tunes from this era of musical empowerment. If you love powerful songs from the late sixties and seventies\, with big soulful female vocals and harmonies\, then this is an experience not to be missed! \n\nThe girl group phenomenon of the early 1960s was a product of a predominantly male music-business\, which fitted artists into traditional stereotypes… Doe-eyed young women singing about their hopeless devotion to their handsome\, straying men\, forgiving them in the name of love. Then things began to change; in 1964 a teenage girl appeared on American TV alongside predominantly male acts from the ‘rock n roll’ hall of fame: Chuck Berry\, James Brown\, Marvin Gaye\, The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones. She stepped up to the mic and began to sing her latest hit single\, “Maybe I Know.” The lyrics suggested that she knew her boyfriend had been unfaithful\, “But what can I do?” she crooned. Then\, suddenly Gore began to sing another song… “You don’t own me\, I’m not just one of your many toys.” She seemingly gave a satisfied smile as she belt-out\, “Don’t tell me what to do… Don’t tell me what to say”. Her name was Lesley Gore. \nAnd so began the first wave of bold young women\, who knew that music belonged to them. The door opened for others to find their voices in a time of social change. A man still loved a woman\, and a woman still loved a man\, but sisters were doing it for themselves. Women began to sing about making the same choices\, mistakes\, and regrets as their male counterparts. It led to a decade\, and more\, of gutsy women with soulful voices\, challenging pre-conceived ideas\, and rocking the charts with heart and soul.

SUMMARY:Unsewn
DESCRIPTION:“Unsewn” follows Durga and Eva\, two women confronting patriarchal oppression. Durga works in an Eastern factory under harsh conditions\, while Eva suffers domestic abuse in the West. Eva’s abusive partner offers her a gift of apology—the same dress produced by Durga—and as soon as they wear the magical dresses made from the same fabric\, they meet in a limbo possibly created by Goddess Kali. They share their experiences and despite initial solace\, reality intrudes. Yet\, they persevere\, transforming together\, symbolising women’s resilience and solidarity as seen in Indian Mythologies. Through powerful storytelling and symbolism\, “Unsewn” explores the strength found in unity against adversity.
