SUMMARY:The Good Women
DESCRIPTION:After it’s successful run at VAULT Festival\, “The Good Women” transfers to Greenwich Theatre. A funny\, bold and thought-provoking piece of queer theatre inspired by a true queer story.   \n\n\n\nIt’s the 1960s and the world is changing: Protesters take the street for equality and against the Vietnam war\, hippies celebrate free love and a young band called “The Beatles” is rising to fame. Not in conservative Switzerland\, where women did not get the vote until 1971. \n\n\n\nBette\, star of a popular TV cooking show\, and Trudy\, a housewife in an unhappy marriage\, are about to change that. \n\n\n\nPraise for “The Good Women”  \n\n\n\n“This thoughtful glimpse into the difficulties faced by women in the 1960s is gently uplifting” – The British Theatre Guide

SUMMARY:Women in Focus: Monika Čejková
DESCRIPTION:Art historian\, writer and curator of the Modern and Contemporary Art Collection at the National Gallery Prague\, Monika Čejková\, will open our new talk series\, Women in Focus. Monika will discuss her interest in contemporary art\, which paved her journey to becoming an author and curator. She will also describe her recent projects\, mostly dealing with the notion and modification of art in the digital age. Specifically\, she will talk about the philosophy of new technologies\, artificial intelligence\, cyberculture and the topics of the post-gender world\, post-humanism and digisexuality. \n\n\n\nMonika’s talk will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience. \n\n\n\nAbout the speaker: \n\n\n\nMonika Čejková is a curator of the next Fotograf Festival 2023: #Hypertension23 at National Gallery Prague and Ora et lege II at Broumov Monastery\, 2023. Recent exhibitions include\, e.g.\, The Palace of Concrete Poetry at Writers House of Georgia in Tbilisi (2022)\, Neo-rising at Polansky Gallery in Prague (2022)\, Ora et lege I at Broumov Monastery (2021)\, Fantasy Finery at Berlínskej model Gallery in Prague (2021)\, Blasted Heathat AM 180 Gallery in Prague (2020). She studied the History of Art at Charles University in Prague. She is currently undergoing a curatorial residency at the Delfina Foundation in London\, during which she plans to continue to explore the theme of art in the (post) digital age and extend her research to art about the new identity of the human being whose original form has been abstracted by digital space. \n\n\n\nIn 2020\, Monika launched a long-term nomadic project titled “Ora et lege” – a critical dialogue between contemporary art and the teachings of the Benedictine order and the Catholic Church. This project is thematically focused on the work of contemporary visual artists with text and paved the way for another subject that Monika is currently exploring: the literary turn in visual art\, which has brought various forms of authorial writing to the fore relation to the overabundance of digital text. \n\n\n\nMore info: \n\n\n\nwww.monikacejkova.com \n\n\n\nwww.instagram.com/monika_cejkova \n\n\n\nPART OF WOMEN IN FOCUS \n\n\n\nWomen In Focus is Czech Centre London’s new programme series introducing inspiring female personalities and their accomplished professional journeys. The themes of the discussions will include the arts\, the fashion industry\, architecture\, ballet\, and many other professional fields. \n\n\n\nThe series aims to unveil specific intricacies in various fields through dialogue and open discussion with the audience. Our speakers will also address the challenges that they encountered as professional women working in often male-dominated environments\, and they’ll share practices that led to their successful and rewarding accomplishments.

SUMMARY:Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess screening + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:We’re partnering with The New Black Film Collective for a screening at the Museum of London Docklands that unearths the story of Jamaica’s only female National Hero.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe documentary Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess – by award-winning Jamaican-born American filmmaker Roy T. Anderson and Dr Harecourt Fuller – explores one of the most revered heroines in the history of the ‘New World’: Nanny of the Maroons. Her victory is celebrated in the present with her image appearing on the Jamaican $500 note and a posthumous award of Order of National Hero. Her resistance is an inspirational example of the many ways in which women have undermined slavery throughout history. Join us and learn more about this African warrior queen whose military prowess led her people to victory over the British army.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe screening will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with special guest speakers. Advertised end times may be subject to change.\n\n\n\n\n\nBlack History Month 2023 #SalutingOurSisters

SUMMARY:Women in Focus: Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines
DESCRIPTION:Czech Centre’s popular Women in Focus series presents a very special speaker this February: Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines. During her talk\, Lady Milena will share her life-long experiences including her recollection of WWII and Nicholas Winton’s Kindertransport from Prague to London\, her early days in a new country and her rich professional career that led her from business to education and charity work. Lady Milena will also discuss her first memorable encounter with Sir Nicholas Winton at BBC studios and how their relationships gradually evolved into a genuine friendship. \n\n\n\nABOUT LADY MILENA GRENFELL-BAINES \n\n\n\nBorn Milena Fleischmannová in Prague\, young Milena grew up in the Chrudim district in a family with close ties to the Czech artistc scene. When she was three\, Milena’s mother died in childbirth and her father soon remarried. In July of 1939\, nine-year-old Milena and her three-year-old half sister left Prague on what became the last kinder transport train to the United Kingdom organised by Nicholas Winton. The girls stayed with a foster family in Ashton-under-Lyne and Milena attended a local school there before moving on to attend The Czechoslovak State School established by the Czech government in exile in Llanwrtyd Wells\, Wales. \n\n\n\nAfter the war\, Milena trained as a children’s nurse and in 1954 married British architect and urban planner Sir George Grenfell-Baines. Following a brief holiday in France\, Lady Milena’s career took a different turn when she was offered a role as a cookery interpreter\, starting her long career in the cookery business. Known to many as ‘Lady Remoska’\, Milena is credited for introducing the Czech cook pan Remoska to the British market. \n\n\n\nAnother significant event in Lady Milena’s life was her meeting with Sir Nicholas Winton during the BBC Programme ‘That’s Life’. Disclosing Winton’s involvement in the saving of 669 children from Czechoslovakia before the outbreak of WW2\, the programme arranged for many of those children to attend the live screening\, Milena being one of them. \n\n\n\nThroughout her life\, Lady Milena has been actively involved in Czech-British cultural and social relations and pursued her life-long interest in classical music. She has been awarded a number of honours both in Czechia and the UK\, including the Jan Masaryk Gratias Agit and MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire). For the last 10 years\, she has been giving talks at schools on behalf of the Holocaust Educational Trust. \n\n\n\nAdmission: £5 (+ Eventbrite fee)

SUMMARY:Jude Kelly: Shakespeare’s Women
DESCRIPTION:Following on from recently directing the sold out world premiere play reading of ‘Shakespeare’s Women’ at The Globe\, Jude Kelly takes us on a journey of exploration of some of the great female characters in The Bard’s works. \nWho were the real-life inspirations behind these characters\, what do they teach us about gender politics in 16th Century society\, and how contemporary are the themes and challenges that these women faced? From Juliet to Desdemona\, Portia to Ophelia\, Lady M to Kate Shrew \, Jude will demonstrate the huge emotional power and complexity these of these famous female roles. \nThis fascinating evening is more than just a presentation\, it’s a conversation – indeed a provocation – by the founder of WOW Global to discuss how we can best shape the future of gender-equality by learning from the past.

DESCRIPTION:Marylebone Village is home to a community of independent fashion labels\, global lifestyle brands\, and restaurants founded by inspirational women\, and to celebrate International Women’s Day 2025\, the central London shopping and dining destination announces a week of events\, in-store activities\, and promotions in support of their female founders.    \nNot only will the women behind the businesses of Marylebone Village be championed throughout the week\, but a live panel discussion event will start the week on Monday 3rd March 2025 taking place at The Marylebone Hotel.   \nEvent capacity is limited\, so spaces are being allocated via a ticket ballot. Apply for a pair of tickets via the Marylebone Village website via this dedicated link here.  \nHosted and moderated by local Marylebone Village resident and broadcaster Jo Good\, the panel features an impressive line-up of leading female business trailblazers:  \n\nHenrietta Rix\, co-founder of RIXO: With one of her best friends and co-founder Orlagh McCloskey\, Henrietta has built a cult following from the British womenswear label’s vintage-inspired silhouettes and hand-painted prints to create a covetable brand DNA that’s instantly recognisable.   \n\n\nMarielle Wyse\, founder of WYSE London: Following a successful career in television\, Marielle took some time out to bring up her kids before embarking on her own fashion label at age 49. What started as a handful of colourful cashmere jumpers has grown into a brand to answer all your style needs – but more importantly\, to make you feel good.   \n\n\nJennie Allen\, founder of Bayley & Sage: With a vision to create fresh food stores with the most delicious produce without compromising on quality\, the B&S story began in 1997. Today the products reflect the best of the season\, with 13 stores found in popular communities.   \n\n\nStacy Chan\, founder of PLATFORM: After a decade working in finance in New York\, London and Geneva\, Stacy decided to pursue her passion to champion and support the growth of independent brands. Her concept store showcases designers and artists that speak the future in fashion: sustainable\, quality made and carefully crafted.   \n\nThe evening is set to be inspiring and empowering\, with discussions covering the obstacles\, journeys\, and milestones across the panellists’ careers in fashion and hospitality\, plus a variety of topics including equality\, work life balance and career advice for the next generation of entrepreneurs\, as well as this year’s theme for IWD – Accelerate Action.    \nAfter the panel events\, guests are invited to network and enjoy complimentary drinks and nibbles kindly provided by The Marylebone. The event will be fundraising on the evening and attendees are encouraged to bring toiletries to donate to the Marylebone Project’s Sanctuary\, the UK’s sole women’s-only drop in centre that’s open 24/7\, 365 days a year.

SUMMARY:After Sex
DESCRIPTION:They’re on the same page. It’s just sex. It doesn’t have to be complicated. \nAnyway\, it wouldn’t work. He hates kissing in the morning. She killed her guinea pigs. He doesn’t speak to his dad. \nThey’re different people. \nIt’s just sex. \n“I’m just worried because I think what I’m being turned on by is the fact that you’re imagining a stable future with me\, whereas what you’re being turned on by is the potential potency of your own sperm.” \nA lyrical\, charged\, sharply observed and genuinely erotic two-hander\, After Sex follows the trajectory of a couple\, told almost entirely through post-coital scenes. It’s about how the sex we have can change us: a love-song to connection and to people’s capacity for changing each other’s lives.
