SUMMARY:Women in Focus: Juliet Vopěnka Navrátilová
DESCRIPTION:The next edition of the Czech Centre’s Women in Focus series takes a unique turn—this time delving into the deeply personal and spiritual. Juliet Vopěnka Navrátilová\, author\, shamanic practitioner\, Blue Badge guide\, and anthropology student\, shares her transformative journey from illness and emotional struggle to healing and empowerment. Through sensitivity\, ritual\, and connection\, she redefines what it means to thrive in today’s world. \nAbout Juliet Vopěnka Navrátilová\n\nJuliet left the Czech Republic at 19 and spent two decades in London after a few years in Berlin. Her lifelong sensitivity\, once a burden\, became a strength during a deep “alchemical journey of metamorphoses.” This is also the subtitle of her second book\, Cesta (ne)mocné Londýňanky (The Journey of a Power(less) Londoner)\, which explores trauma\, healing\, and shamanic calling. Her London life included work in Wandsworth prison and as a Blue Badge guide. With degrees in Social and Medical Anthropology from Goldsmiths and UCL\, her study focused on consciousness\, ecofeminism\, and ritual. Her first book\, Myslet srdcem (Thinking with the Heart)\, became a Czech bestseller. About the Theme of the Evening – An Empath’s Journey from Rags to RichesIn this edition of the Czech Centre’s Women in Focus series\, Juliet Vopěnka Navrátilová offers a profoundly personal and spiritual reflection on living with extreme sensitivity. Her “shamanic illness” became the turning point that redirected her path—from illness and emotional struggle to healing\, empowerment\, and purpose. In this context\, “rags to riches” refers not to material wealth but to emotional\, mental\, and spiritual abundance gained through self-understanding. \nThrough travels in Latin America and participation in shamanic ceremonies\, Juliet saw her empathic nature as a gift rather than a burden. Empaths—highly sensitive\, neurodiverse individuals—often absorb others’ emotions unconsciously\, leading to exhaustion and illness. She now helps others reconnect with their intuition and inner power by embracing her sensitivity. As a shamanic practitioner\, she also energetically cleans homes and spaces. Her journey is one of transformation through ritual\, awareness\, and heart-centred connection. \nwww.thinkingwiththeheart.com\nwww.mysletsrdcem.cz

SUMMARY:Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess screening + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:We’re partnering with The New Black Film Collective for a screening at the Museum of London Docklands that unearths the story of Jamaica’s only female National Hero.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe documentary Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess – by award-winning Jamaican-born American filmmaker Roy T. Anderson and Dr Harecourt Fuller – explores one of the most revered heroines in the history of the ‘New World’: Nanny of the Maroons. Her victory is celebrated in the present with her image appearing on the Jamaican $500 note and a posthumous award of Order of National Hero. Her resistance is an inspirational example of the many ways in which women have undermined slavery throughout history. Join us and learn more about this African warrior queen whose military prowess led her people to victory over the British army.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe screening will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with special guest speakers. SUMMARY:Right Of Way @ VAULT Festival
DESCRIPTION:‘I don’t remember where I am when I decide to walk. Maybe the idea creeps up on me over time – born somewhere within me the first time I saw the sea. \n\n\n\nLike osmosis\, the thought it soaks into my skin and lies in wait until I cry it out as a single teardrop. Glistening\, shimmering\, and whole – it falls out of my subconscious and into my knowledge. \n\n\n\nThe know\, the knowing\, that I need to walk.’ \n\n\n\nRIGHT OF WAY is a response to writer Beth Bowden’s experience of becoming a Young Carer. It follows a young woman walking the South West Coast path\, documenting her journey of 100+ miles in the face of grief & exhaustion. It is a reflection on bodies\, chronic illness\, loss and joy. Using innovative multimedia projection and exploring natural materials and movement\, this new play aims to kickstart conversations about disability and chronic illness. \n\n\n\nDATES \n\n\n\n21st – 24th February\, 20:00 \n\n\n\n25th – 26th February\, 19:30 \n\n\n\n26th February\, 16:40 \n\n\n\nLOCATION \n\n\n\nThe Cage\, The Vaults\, Leake Street\, London SE1 7NN \n\n\n\nTICKETS \n\n\n\nTickets available from £13.50 via https://vaultfestival.com/performances/right-of-way/

SUMMARY:Post Sex Spagbol @ VAULT
DESCRIPTION:What happens when you mix Krissy\, an irresponsible ball of anxiety\, with a classroom full of gullible teen girls? \n\n\n\nAfter being handed a job as a counsellor and sex-ed teacher\, Krissy purposely leads a classroom full of goggle-eyed girls down a motorway of mistakes. Fuelled by her own flaws at a religious all-girls boarding school\, she shaves away any expectation of a perfect role model. With a desire for destruction\, Krissy intentionally feeds bad advice to the hormone-riddled girls\, from questionable kinks to the swimming pool’s secret sex shack\, while being forced to face the femininity that the world around her has trained her to hate. \n\n\n\nTold by a three-women ensemble\, this comedic story of sex\, love and spag bol explores self-love\, womanhood and growing up … as well as vibrators\, funerals\, the twelve disciples\, piss play and THAT mint shower gel. \n\n\n\n“Funnier than Fleabag! I predict this show will be a major hit on TV one day. See it now\, in a small room\, while you have the chance.” – Christopher Brett Bailey.

SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Like the exhibition\, these events are completely free to attend and require pre-booking. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. SUMMARY:Fighting On All Fronts: Women At War
DESCRIPTION:AntikBar\, the original vintage poster specialist\, will be holding an exhibition focusing on the role of women during World War Two featuring posters issued by both Allied and Axis powers\, in particular the UK\, USA\, USSR and some Nazi-occupied countries. Fighting On All Fronts: Women At War will be held at their gallery in Chelsea from International Women’s Day to Victory Day (8 March to 9 May). \n\n\n\nLabour shortages on the home front during WWII led to dramatic changes to the role of women in society. Jobs in factories\, agriculture\, nursing and other vital military and civilian industries that were previously seen as occupations mainly for men were now opened up to women. Posters played a big part in the publicity campaigns\, using patriotic appeal to encourage women to help win the war and secure victory by joining the workforce. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition will show how poster design and visual messaging varied in the different countries depending on the impact of war on the population and the roles of women in the conflict. Although they replaced men in the war production in all countries\, women’s day-to-day realities were very different. \n\n\n\nOne of the first countries to declare war on Nazi Germany\, Britain suffered extensive bombing during the Blitz\, as well as food shortages and rationing. The duties of women concentrated on providing support to the troops\, handling war logistics and health and safety measures. The imagery of British posters emphasises practical efforts rather than damage and destruction; the presence of the enemy is felt but not witnessed. In contrast\, the Soviet Union was partially occupied by Nazi troops and its population experienced war and violence first-hand. Women were engaged in battle\, abused by the occupants\, and subjected to bombing and severe food shortages. Reflecting this reality\, the poster messaging is explicit\, often violent and brutal\, and women are depicted directly fighting the enemy. In America daily life during the war was mostly affected by the rationing of food\, gasoline\, tyre and nylon stockings. The poster designs are often stylish and glamorous\, elevating participation in the war effort. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is free and will be open to the public during the gallery opening hours.

SUMMARY:1001 Afternoons with Wycliffe Mundopa
DESCRIPTION:Private View: Thursday 21 May 2020\, 6:30-9pm  \nLONDON (LONDON BRIDGE) \n  \nStrong female figures appear vibrant and empowered in Wycliffe Mundopa’s complex theatrical scenes. These are the residents of Mbare — one of Harare’s most colourful townships — whom play a central role in not just the infrastructure of Zimbabwe’s largely informal economy\, but also the shaping of a proud national identity. For his first solo exhibition with Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery London at Melior Place\, the Zimbabwe-based artist presents a powerful new series of work entitled 1001 Afternoons\, continuing his explorations of the complexities of female existence in relation to his role as an artist and narrator. Informed by Shona linguistic idiom\, rich cultural symbolism and personal and collective experiences\, Mundopa’s work offers a poignant insight into Zimbabwe’s contemporary society. \n  \nHaving grown up in Mbare — historically an entry port to the capital and still a bustling hub of trade in all its various guises —\, the artist is a first-hand witness to the intimate and informal cultural structures\, which simultaneously exploit and empower women. As such\, his compositions hold a strong female presence through nuanced and skilful depictions that defy gender stereotypes and shed light on the pathos and drama of the lives of ordinary people in Harare. Significantly\, the artist refuses to pass judgement on any of his subjects\, presenting them instead as equals\, each rendered with the same level of attention and artistic energy. \n  \nThrough his practice\, Mundopa pays homage to the likes of Matisse\, Lautrec and Soutine as well as the Dutch masters\, whilst utilising the grand genre of painting to elevate the people who were traditionally omitted from the aesthetic canon. Indeed\, the artist’s use of sophisticated cultural symbolism functions creates a uniquely intimate and striking visual language that illustrates not just the narratives of the people themselves\, but the very pulse of Zimbabwean society. \n  \nThe exhibition’s title 1001 Afternoons alludes to the practice of storytelling in both literature and art by nodding to the Middle Eastern folk tales One Thousand and One Nights\, but instead\, of depicting nighttime scenes\, Mundopa’s work occupies a unique limbo space. ‘Afternoons are a place of waiting\, possibility\, opportunity\, dreaming or vacant despair. All are equal and present in this time frame\,’ the artist commented. Within this realm\, Mundopa’s subjects appear liberated from cultural preconceptions and their everyday contexts\, inviting the viewer to more actively engage with the creative process by imagining potential narratives for themselves. At the same time\, this allows for a greater level of relatability in which viewers are given the freedom to identify with the subjects and scenes through their own subjective gaze. Indeed\, it is this deep level of engagement and artistic sensitivity that makes the artist’s work both timeless\, and aesthetically and intellectually compelling.
