SUMMARY:Cyan.rar
DESCRIPTION:cyan.rar \n22nd Nov – 29th Nov \nPrivate View 22nd November 7 – 9 pm \nIslington Arts Factory // London \n#CyanRar #IslingtonArtsFactory \nart.ists\nKo ‘Carol’ Huai-Ching\, Youngha Kim\, Aisling Browne\, Natasha Moody\, Robbie Di Vito\, AyshiaTaskin\, Rachel Innes \nSpecific colours have come to be imbued with symbols\, meaning and histories while equally contributing\, through their applications\, to contemporary life. Therefore\, for Cyan.rar\, seven emerging artists coagulate to create work through the investigation of the colour cyan and the significance it has played in cultural\, literacy\, symbolic and internal topics. \nThe colour cyan is of a cosmopolitan greenish-blue tone and known by a variety of names; turquoise\, electric blue\, aqua and teal. The cyanic shade\, induced through illumination\, vividly expresses itself through the principal wavelength of between 490–520 nm (nanometres). A colour which captivatingly exists within a limonoid state amid green and blue hues. Along with magenta\, black and yellow\, cyan is included within the ‘primary colour’ schemata. The technical side of the colour cyan is its use\, as an additive colour\, within the RGB classification – a system which produces all colours viewed on a computer or television display. The naissance of cyan occurs through a mixture of equal amounts of green and blue light. \nThe Cyan.rar exhibition realises a congregation of artworks where participating artists grapple with concepts surrounding the colour cyan. The exhibition will host print-based\, paintings and sculptural works exploring an array of subject matter from how the colour expressed in nature\, culture and theology to the focus on the .rar aspect and the investigation of the subconscious mind through the excavation of layers ‘zipped’ within the human consciousness.

SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Like the exhibition\, these events are completely free to attend and require pre-booking. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact us via email or send us a direct message on social media. We hope to see you there!\n\n.\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 23rd June\, 7 – 9pm // Private View – Velvet Society.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis features a solo viola performance of Syrian classical compositions by Raghad Haddad\, a refugee in the UK and a member of the London Syrian Ensemble.\n\n\n\n\n\n Pre-book for this free event: https://bit.ly/3zGZf7q\n Let your friends know you are attending and invite them! Facebook event: https://fb.me/e/1ESsDmT5Q\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday 25th June\, 2 – 4pm // Workshop – Bird/Human.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis free workshop hosted by artist Heba Al-Akkad is aimed at children and young people. In acts of playful discovery\, we will take the bird and the human\, merging and mixing the two to obtain an inspired character. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. SUMMARY:Ghana Party in the Park
DESCRIPTION:The world is now coming to Africa!” proclaimed the Guardian in a recent article on the global popularity of Africa’s most exciting cultural export: Afrobeats. Beyond the music\, demand for African food is also skyrocketing worldwide. For those looking for an authentic African experience\, London’s Ghana Party in the Park Festival is just the ticket! Dance to afrobeats\, feast on traditional cuisines and admire spectacular Ghanaian costumes\, all for as little as £20! \n\n\n\nHeld in Enfield’s Trent Park\, the annual outdoor festival will be attended by a crowd of 10\,000\, making it the world’s biggest Ghanian event outside of Ghana\, attracting overseas visitors from Europe\, the USA\, Canada and of course\, Ghana itself. \n\n\n\nAfrobeats has become one of the most beloved music genres across the globe\, with artists such as US superstar Drake and British grime artist Dave featuring on chart-topping afrobeat anthems. Whilst organisers remain tight-lipped about this year’s music line-up until the official announcement in June\, the event guarantees big names and fresh sounds\, with Mr Eazi\, Tion Wayne\, and Chip having graced the Ghana Party in the Park stage in recent years. \n\n\n\nAnd\, of course\, no Ghanaian festival would be complete without food. Lots of it! From Jollof and suya to bofro and sobolo\, Ghana Party in the Park promises the very best in West African cuisine\, on top of which\, the UK’s leading World Food brand Tropical Sun will be sampling their delicious snacks and drinks at their stand. Our recommendation: Tropical Sun’s world-famous Coconut Peanuts\, which are quickly becoming one of the most popular snacks in West Africa! \n\n\n\nTickets are priced from £20 and are available from the usual outlets\, including Shoobs and Eventbrite. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, including line-up announcements\, visit the Ghana Party in the Park website – www.gpitp.com
